Apathy is not caring about what goes on with you and around you. Acceptance, on the other hand, is deliberately allowing things within and around you to be the way they are. It is the absence of expectations and intellectual concepts. With this absence the subconscious, and nature in general, can flow freely, heal itself and you can be more passionate about your interests than before. Written for anyone who’s ever experienced intrusive thoughts or anxiety, neuroscientists Jeffrey M. Schwartz and Rebecca Gladding challenge the neural wiring that creates these thoughts in an effort to equip readers for fighting them. By providing readers with a toolkit called the Four Step Method, Schwartz and Gladding teach us to free ourselves from toxic thought patterns by simply relabeling, reframing, refocusing, and revaluing our thoughts. Exploring therapeutic techniques and neural concepts such as self-directing neuroplasticity with accessibility and ease, You Are Not Your Brain invites readers to disengage from negative self-talk and remember that the lies produced by our brains do not define our self-worth. *** Do you want more free audiobook summaries like this? “Lessons Learned from OCD” Reframing to see the good that OCD has brought: Lara put it this way: “Having OCD has made me a more intense, sensitive, and compassionate human being. I have been humbled by my disorder. It has built character even while tearing at my soul, my heart, and my self-esteem. It has enabled me to fight harder, to strive for the good and the truth inside of me. It has made me less critical and judge mental of others who suffer in their lives.” How to Revalue: Realize that your obsessive thoughts and compulsive urge are not important and that you can deal with them. You’re in sense, devaluing those silly thoughts. Anticipate and Accept Anticipate that the obsessive thought will occur hundreds of time a day and do not be surprised by them, even if they are violent and extremely upsetting. Accept that your problem is a treatable medical condition.... accept that it exists despite yourself, not because of yourself Use progressive time delays that gradually increase longer than 15 minutes by breaking the task into manageable bits, reassessing the situation while you are still anxious Practice - over stress the importance of learning to make self-supportive statements as a regular part of doing the Four Steps. Victim to victor - As Karen in the book says, “get a loving buddy, a friend, or a family member to help you and encourage you. Get your life back. Your future is in your hands now.” Recap: Relabeling - “It’s all right, it’s just OCD” Reattribute - it to a brain glitch Refocus - on a constructive, enjoyable behavior Revaluing - the meaning of your thoughts and urges - - - **Please note: all references and direct quotes mentioned in this book club podcast episode are directly from Brain Lock: Free Yourself from Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior by Jeffrey M. Brain Lock: How to free yourself from OCD - Step 1 RELABEL

Found Family Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 4, 2020 33:47

“It’ not me, it’s my OCD”  The first step is to Relabel, and this helps answer the question:  What are those bothersome, intrusive thoughts? Let's take a look at Carla, a beautician, referenced in this book (page 36-37):  "...became so obsessed with the idea that she was going to harm her infant daughter that she considered giving up for adoption this child she had wanted so much, for so long... Carla was at first misdiagnosed as having severe postpartum depression, would suffer panic attacks -- thoughts that she was going to kill the baby -- that were so severe that she couldn't even look at a knife or a pair of scissors. "It was like watching a movie where you almost put yourself into that screen and you think, 'Oh God, am I capable of committing such an act?' I was fighting this every day, all day.'" There was a long time when her OCD thoughts were so bad that she wanted to be committed, so bad that she thought of taking her own life to spare her daughter's life."   Here are the most important takeaways to remember from this chapter: Call them what they are: obsessions and compulsions - Make a conscious effort to stay grounded in reality  - Strive to avoid being tricked into thinking that the feeling is real. It’s not. - Your thoughts and urges are symptoms of OCD, which is a medical disease  - The brain is sending false messages  - Stress heightens OCD anxieties  - Obsessions are not reality - they’re fears because you think, wow these thoughts seem so horrific and unbelievable — but remember, you have the power to control your responses to your thoughts  - Changing your behavior will change how your brain works - The struggle isn’t to make the feeling go away, it’s not to give into the feeling — these steps will help you manage your fears because you can fight back  How to use RELABEL — AKA increasing your insight (knowing it’s OCD)  1. Keep in mind what they enemy really is, and call it what it really is. "It's not me, it's my OCD" 2. Talk back to your OCD 3. Anticipate - an important subset in Relabeling — say to yourself, "OK here comes my obsessive thought!" 4. Use mindful awareness — it requires you to consciously recognize and make a mental note of the unpleasant feeling and relabel it as an OCD symptom caused by a false message from the brain  5. Use your Impartial Spectator = the ability to stand outside of yourself and watch yourself in action = same mental action as the ancient Buddhist concept of mindful awareness  6. Accept — another important subset in Relabeling  7. Stay busy — activity is your friend, boredom is your enemy  8. Keep track of your progress — as you forget your symptoms on the road to recovery you may also forget your progress  REMEMBER:  - When you Relabel automatically it becomes a ritual in itself and no longer holds meaning. So remember to use mindful awareness  - AND the key to success is strengthening your Impartial Spectator - your ability to stand outside of yourself and observe your actions with mindful awareness  - - - - - - -  Let's get #iAmNotMyThoughts and #iAmStrongerThanMyThoughts trending on Twitter to spread this awareness!  If you're interested in joining our book club, please DM me on @FoundFamilyPod on Twitter!  - - - -  Disclaimer: most of the quotes and references in this episode are not my own. "If I don't pray enough, something bad is going to happen to me or my family" "Why did I just think about jumping in front of a train? Am I crazy? "Did I lock the door? What if I didn't lock the door? Omg, I didn't lock the door...did I?" OCD is an ugly monster. It's always hungry and never gets full. Living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder has been one of the greatest challenges and the greatest blessings in my life. There were days when I thought about taking my life, just to silence the noise in my head. There were days when I felt on top of the world because I found so much clarity in learning more about myself. There were days when I would spend at least 16 hours a day anxiously obsessing over the same question in my mind, for weeks. OCD attacked my confidence, my relationships, my faith, and my own self-image. When I was finally diagnosed, I felt a sense of relief because I was able to give all of this a name. I was able to better understand why I thought the way that I thought, and why I did the things that I did. And even though I, through the power of my own mind, overcame and recovered from Emetophobia and Scrupulosity, OCD has still shown up as Harm OCD and ROCD over the last few years. So I decided to pick up this book, Brain Lock by Jeffrey M. Schwartz, MD**, and learn more about OCD and discovery new ways of freeing myself. This episode talks about: - Explaining obsessions and compulsions - Defining the true meaning of mindfulness - What happens to the brain of someone with OCD Lessons you'll learn: How to combat OCD thoughts - Pay less attention to the unpleasant sensations to weaken the brain circuits associated with them - Accept the "bad" thought as an obstacle to overcome - Alter your behavior response and change your brain chemistry - Strengthen your ability to resist the urge to perform a compulsion **Please note: all references and direct quotes mentioned in this book club podcast episode are directly from Brain Lock: Free Yourself from Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior by Jeffrey M. Mindfulness has been absolutely huge because in the most stressful situations in life, which are all compliments of being an entrepreneur. My emotions have allowed me to self-regulate and to keep myself as calm as possible in every situation and I faced some pretty traumatic circumstances in my business and in my life and I've always looked at them in a way where it's, what do we need to do? What's my next move in this situation? So mindfulness has been critical for me. Thoughts on Breathing Like I said before, if I couldn't ride my bike, I wouldn't be able to breathe and breathing was really critical to my being able to deal with my debilitating flying anxiety. I think breathing, more than anything else, is the number one thing that people must be doing when they are trying to get of themselves. Suggested Resources Book: Brain Lock: Free Yourself from Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior by Jeffrey M. Schwartz Book: Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain App: Listening to music Bullying Story When we talk about bullying, I won't say that I experienced bullying in the way we see it today. When I was in high school I was in a situation where I had people threatening me and this was in the seventies. I grew up in Detroit and there were was a lot of racial conflict at that time. There was a TV show called Roots that came on. It was a mini-series with LaVar Burton, I think in 1976 or 1977. There was tremendous conflict between the African American students and the white students in all of the schools in Detroit because we had come out of the race riots and the violence of the police against African Americans in the late sixties. And we moved into the seventies and we experienced something called white flight where a judge ruled that all of the city schools must be integrated or desegregated. So now they were busing white kids into black schools and black kids into white schools. And the amount of violence that was going on in the schools at that time was just unheard of. And I was one of the white students that was taken out of an all-white school. This was completely random. It's just like they picked your name out of a hat and you had to go. And so I was taken out of an all-white high school and moved over to an all-black high school and there were six white kids in my graduating class. And I had an instance where I was in a locker room. I was asked to come be the token on the basketball team and I couldn't play basketball to save my life. But there I was and apparently, some kids had done something and they got in trouble for it and they thought I told on them. So one of the other basketball players came over and she grabbed one of these metal cages where we would put our clothes in lockers and she picked it up and started shoving it in my face. You know, saying that I was the one who did it. And I kept pleading with her saying, I didn't do it, I didn't do it, but when you're in a situation like that you know, you're guilty until further proven guilty. What I knew in that moment is I had been, up till that moment in my life, someone who was very much a diplomat, even though I'm telling everybody to f**k off, it was always around doing the right thing and you never caused harm to people. And I was very much about justice and making sure that people treated each other properly. And I spent most of my time in that situation, pleading with her to get her to understand who I was and to see me properly and to know that I would never do something like that because that's just not who I am. But the circumstances were such that it was such an incendiary environment that there was nothing I could do. And so the remainder of the year I was pretty much alienated from the rest of the students and I'd try and engage them, but you know, there was nothing I could do. And so I just kind of went about my business, but I think the thing with mindfulness and a situation like that is when you know yourself well enough and you feel really rock solid in who you are and you have a moral compass and a guide that is all about knowing what it is the right thing to do in a situation. I didn't have a real problem with that because I always knew who I was and maybe that's why early on I could tell people to go f**k off because, you know, they were not going to tell me something and they're not gonna blow smoke up my ass. I wasn't going to have any part of it because I knew exactly what they were doing. And so that, that's been kind of a guiding principle for me throughout my whole life, which is all about being mindful of other people and behaving in a way that's respectful of them and always working toward finding a way where we can work together so that everybody wins. Because I don't believe that it's beneficial in life for people to lose as a result of what someone else has done. Competition is one thing, but when people are losing in life because somebody else gets to win, that doesn't work for me.
