Scarlett Lewis founded the nonprofit Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement in honor of her son, Jesse, who was murdered during the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in December 2012. Shortly after his death, Scarlett decided to be part of the solution to the issues that we're seeing in our society -- that also caused the tragedy -- and turned it into an opportunity to build a culture of love, resilience, forgiveness, and connection in our communities at a time when it is needed the most. Scarlett became an advocate for social and emotional learning (SEL) and character development to help children manage their emotions, feel connected, and have healthy, meaningful relationships. She created the Choose Love For Schools program, a no cost, comprehensive, lifespan, next generation character and social emotional development (CSED) program that teaches children how to thoughtfully respond with love in any situation by using the Choose Love Formula (Courage + Gratitude + Forgiveness + Compassion-in-Action), and offer ways for children to handle adversity, have courageous conversations, and to respond with love. Choose Love extends beyond the classroom through additional no-cost programs, including programs for the home, communities, athletics, and the workplace. In addition, the movement offers Choose Love C.A.R.E.S. (Cultivating Authentic Relationships in the Education System), Experiential Educator Wellness Workshops for school leaders and educators, as well as multiple extension programs. The Choose Love programs have been accessed in all 50 states and in more than 120 countries, reaching 3 million children. Scarlett is the author of Nurturing Healing Love: A Mother's Journey of Hope & Forgiveness, a memoir of her journey toward choosing love and forgiveness; From Sandy Hook to the World: How the Choose Love Movement Transforms Lives, an in-depth look at how Scarlett founded the Movement and its impact around the world today; and Rose's Foal, a children's book, with photographs by Scarlett Lewis, that tells the poignant story of a beloved horse and her newborn foal. Since the tragedy, Scarlett has spoken across the U.S. and internationally to diverse audiences sharing her empowering story and the organization's far-reaching programs, urging everyone to become part of the solution to the issues the world is facing. Scarlett has spoken at multiple national, statewide, and community-based events including hundreds of talks at schools, addressing educators and administrators. In 2021, Scarlett was named a Forbes 50 over 50 Impact Honoree, one of 50 women leading the way with impact and changing their communities and the world in ways big and small through social entrepreneurship, law, advocacy and education. Scarlett was the keynote speaker at the 2018 and 2019 National Forum on Character presented by Character.org and in 2020 and the keynote speaker for the New England Head Start Association. In addition, Scarlett has presented at the Music City SEL Conference in Nashville; SXSW EDU Conference; ASCD Empower; the Nebraska Mental Health Conference; and multiple statewide Counselor Association Conferences. She has been interviewed by BBC, Fox News, CBS, the Today Show, The Guardian, and many regional papers and podcasts about the Choose Love Movement and the neuroscience behind the Choose Love Formula and the benefits of SEL, and has been featured in high-profile magazines, including Fortune, Strive, and the Huffington Post. Scarlett also hosts the ChooSELove Podcast, interviewing noted authors and experts on post-traumatic growth, self-empowerment, brain health, resilience, forgiveness, trauma and grief, mental health, and more.

Scarlett Lewis, an advocate for social and emotional learning (SEL) and character development, and the founder of the nonprofit Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement, joins us today to talk about her story of losing his 6-years-old son in one of the worst mass shootings in U.S history and how she chose to become part of the solution to prevent tragic events like that bu nurturing our children to have essential life skills that help them thoughtfully react to difficult situations.Scarlett's Story – On 14th December 2012, Scarlett lost her son, Jesse, to one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history. He brought joy to the world with his radiant smile and was compassionate beyond his years, leaving the words "nurturing, healing and love" written on a chalkboard at home for Scarlett to find after the tragedy. Scarlett is honoring Jesse's beautiful life by founding the nonprofit Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement. Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement Scarlett Lewis Today we bring you Scarlett Lewis of the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement.  This nonprofit was born out of unimaginable tragedy - after Scarlett lost her 6-year-old son to the Sandy Hook Active Shooter crisis in December of 2012. She turned indescribable heartbreak into love-driven education for other youth and parents. The aim of Jesse Lewis Choose Love is what the name implies - to create a society where individuals problem solve and find solutions through choosing love. In the aftermath of her son’s murder, Scarlett was surrounded by a community fueled by anger, finger-pointing, and blame. The shooter had mental health issues and anxiety and individuals and media found blame with his mother for the access he had to weapons.  Scarlett knew in her heart that ultimately, these were not the reasons for the shooting, and they wouldn’t stop future active shooter situations. A note written on her kitchen chalkboard by her son before he died confirmed her belief.  “Nurturing, healing, love” were the words Jesse Lewis wrote on that chalkboard.  These words inspired Scarlett to take action. The Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement works to promote the healing of society through love and the development of empathy.  If people are able to find loving ways to work through issues and are shown love, love will provide the solution.  The foundation is guided by four principles - Courage, Gratitude, Forgiveness, and Compassion in Action.  Their website is a wealth of information and contains information on all of the programs they currently have in place.  They encourage visitors to their site to use this information and get involved in any way that they can in their local community. Bring the tissues as this Is both an Inspiring and emotional episode with a story that needs to be told. Scarlett Lewis started the 'Jesse Lewis Choose Love' movement after her son Jesse was taken too soon by a gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary. From the website: https://www.jesselewischooselove.org/Scarlett Lewis founded the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement™ shortly after her six-year-old son, Jesse Lewis, was murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut in December 2012, alongside 19 of his first-grade classmates and six educators in one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history. Scarlett found out after the tragedy that Jesse used his final moments to heroically save nine of his friends. Jesse left a message on their kitchen chalkboard, “Norturting Helinn Love” (Nurturing, Healing Love). When Scarlett learned that these words are included in the definition of “compassion” across all cultures, she realized that love, connection and belonging are universal wants and needs that connect all of humanity. These 3 words led to the creation of our Formula for Choosing Love, which can be used by anyone, at any time, anywhere in the world, to manage their response to any situation (Courage + Gratitude + Forgiveness + Compassion in Action = Choosing Love). Inspired expert educators joined together and created a social and emotional education program that incorporates the latest advances in neuroscience, mindfulness, emotional intelligence and positive psychology to provide children the essential life skills that will not only help them succeed, but also reduce the likelihood that they will harm one another.

Nurturing. Healing. Love. Three powerful words that define compassion across all cultures--that when combined create a profound formula that can lead you to choosing love in any situation in your life. And these exact words were left behind-- written on a kitchen chalkboard--by Jesse Lewis, six-year-old martyr of the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting in December 2012. In a nation riddled with climbing statistics of depression and anxiety among our youth, could nurturing, healing, love be the simple solution to avoiding future tragedies both big and small? Scarlett Lewis, (Jesse’s mom) who founded the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement after her son was murdered, shares her heroic journey, along with influential advice on choosing love in your darkest moments to inspire a more positive, healthy future for all. Shortly after Jesse’s death, Scarlett decided to be part of the solution to the issues we’re seeing in our society that also resulted in this tragedy. She founded the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement and became an advocate for social and emotional learning--which teaches children how to manage their emotions, feel connected, and have healthy relationships. She’s been instrumental in changing legislation to incorporate social-emotional learning into our schools. The Jesse Lewis Empowering Education Act was introduced by Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal, and in December of 2015 Congress approved the Every Student Succeeds Act. And while you’re learning about being intentional with choosing love and living more deeply, we’re excited to announce our upcoming three-day retreat, Uncover, led and facilitated by One Idea Away President, Luke Iorio, & iPEC Founder, and bestselling author, Bruce D Schneider. Join us in the beautiful Asilomar Conference Grounds, CA January 18-20th, or at the Garrison Institute, NY, March 29-31st. Created to guide you through the Uncover Process, you’ll learn and experience a variety of mindfulness activities, how to connect as a community, and more in a supportive, and yes, judgment-free zone. Close the gap of tension in your heart and mind and uncover a personal path to happiness, freedom, and self-actualization. Learn more at OneIdeaAway.com/retreat. Your purpose to living a life more fully and lovingly awaits! Key takeaways: The hopeful lesson. The issues of bullying, suicide, and mental illness don’t end when kids graduate from school. They persist and even get worse into adulthood as they struggle to find connection with themselves and others . . . but there’s hope! Decades of research and the latest statistics have revealed a possible solution. A brighter future lies in THESE skills . . . [15:13]. The compassion train. In the wake of severe tragedy and heartbreak, how do you move forward? Scarlett says you must take your personal power back and cut the cord that attaches you to pain . . . but is it possible when it hurts so much? Without forgetting or turning a blind eye, learn THIS to let go peacefully . . . [21:29]. The brave choice. When you’re attacked--either vicariously or personally--it’s easy to remain frozen in fear. It’s instinctual for you to build a wall against the world and never want to let anyone in again. But there’s a better way, a healthier way, a healing way. The BRIDGE that brings you from fear to love is . . . [30:40]. The heartfelt movement. Anger starts with a thought. Joy starts with a thought. 70-80% of our tens of thousands of daily thoughts are negative, and although it’s intuitive--it’s changeable. Create the ripple effect to a safer, more peaceful and loving world with YOU. This ONE exercise can get you started . . . [34:30]. Tune in and turn the volume up for a dose of inspiration and life lessons. You're never more than One Idea Away from a whole, new reality.
