"The Boys" is an American satirical superhero streaming television series developed by Eric Kripke for Amazon Prime Video. Based on the comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, it follows the eponymous team of vigilantes as they combat superpowered individuals, referred to as "Supes," who often abuse their powers for personal gain and work for a powerful company, Vought International, that ensures the general public views them as heroes. The story focuses on Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid), a young electronics clerk, and Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), a former SAS and CIA operative, who work together with the rest of the Boys against "The Seven," Vought's premier superhero team, led by the power-hungry Homelander (Antony Starr). The series also stars Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Chace Crawford, Laz Alonso, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell, Elisabeth Shue, Colby Minifie, Aya Cash, Claudia Doumit, Jensen Ackles, Cameron Crovetti, Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Daveed Diggs. The fifth and final season premiered on April 8th and drew a mixed response from fans and critics, though the show has been an undisputed success, with a prequel series, "Vought Rising," set to premiere in 2027. Overall, the show was praised for its performances, particularly Antony Starr, visuals, satirical themes, and action sequences. The series has won four awards from 12 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series in 2021, and has won seven Critics' Choice Super Awards and six Astra TV Awards. Showrunner, Executive Producer, and Writer Eric Kripke was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work and experience making the hit series, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the show, which is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video and is up for your consideration for this year's Emmy Awards in all eligible categories. Thank you, and enjoy! [Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for The Boys, Season 5, Episode 5, “One-Shots."]Between Homelander's (Antony Starr) wildly impulsive behavior and the frequent extreme violence across the board in The Boys, we were bound to lose a number of key characters in the show's final season. Season 5 kicked off with an especially surprising one, forcing fans to say goodbye to someone who's been part of the Prime Video series since day one, Jessie T. Usher as A-Train. Now, Season 5, Episode 5, “One-Shots,” removes yet another major character from the equation. At the end of the episode, Homelander kills Valorie Curry's Firecracker. With her run on The Boys wrapping up in spectacular fashion, with quite a few exceptional performance beats, Curry took the time to swing by the Collider Ladies Night studio for an in-depth interview about her journey to The Boys, and her experience digging into the “sad, racist, homophobic piece of shit” that is Firecracker. In addition to discussing Homelander's declaration that he is God and how that changes everything for her, we also talked about the only moment we get a peek at Misty Tucker Gray at the beginning of Episode 5, and, of course, her demise at the hands of Homelander. "Double-Shafted September" concludes with our look at Shaft, the second reboot of Shaft, following Shaft. Yeah, ok, this is pretty confusing without the years, isn't it? Just to be clear, this is the 2019 version, another attempt to kick-start a version of the franchise with Samuel L. Jackson as John Shaft, Jr. But this time, he's not alone, as the actual, ostensible main character is actually Jr's son, John "JJ" Shaft III, played by The Boys' Jessie T. Usher. JJ is a new kind of Shaft, a nerdy, millennial tech-expert working for the FBI. But when he decides to conduct a personal investigation into the death of a close friend, JJ is forced to team up with his absentee, old-fashioned, private eye father. If you think this sounds like a goofy "buddy cop" premise, you're not wrong, as the 2019 Shaft attempts to take the series in a more comedy-based direction. Is it successful as a comedy? Is it successful as a Shaft movie? Is it even successful as a sequel to the previous Shaft? We discuss all this, and more, as we once again get double-shafted. Based on Finn's short film Laura Hasn't Slept (2020), the film stars Sosie Bacon as a therapist who witnesses the bizarre suicide of a patient, then goes through increasingly disturbing and daunting experiences that lead her to believe she is experiencing something supernatural. It also features Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Kal Penn, and Rob Morgan, as well as Caitlin Stasey reprising her role from Laura Hasn't Slept. A feature adaptation of Finn's short was announced in June 2020, and the cast was added in October 2021. Principal photography began that month in New Jersey and ended in November. Originally set for release on the streaming service Paramount+, distributor Paramount Pictures opted to release the film theatrically after positive test screenings. Smile premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 22, 2022, and was released in the United States on September 30. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed over $217 million worldwide on a budget of $17 million. A sequel, Smile 2, is scheduled to be released in October 2024. The Ring is a 2002 American supernatural horror film directed by Gore Verbinski and written by Ehren Kruger. Starring Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, David Dorfman, and Brian Cox, the film focuses on Rachel Keller (Watts), a journalist who discovers a cursed videotape that causes its viewers to die seven days later. It is a remake of Hideo Nakata's 1998 film Ring, based on the 1991 novel by Koji Suzuki. The Ring was theatrically released in the United States on October 18, 2002, by DreamWorks Pictures. It was a box-office success, grossing $249.3 million worldwide on a $48 million budget, making it one of the highest-grossing horror remakes of all time. The Ring received mixed-to-positive reviews, with critics in particular praising the atmosphere and visuals, Bojan Bazelli's cinematography, Verbinski's direction and the performances of the cast (particularly Watts). At the 29th Saturn Awards, the film won in two categories: Best Horror Film and Best Actress (for Watts). The film is the first installment of the American Ring series, and is followed by The Ring Two (2005) and Rings (2017). The success of The Ring inspired American remakes of several other Asian and Japanese horror films, including The Grudge (2004) and Dark Water (2005). Plot Teenage girls Katie and Becca discuss an urban legend about a cursed videotape that causes whoever views it to die in one week. That night, Katie, who viewed it one week ago, is killed by an unseen force. At Katie's funeral, her mother asks her sister Rachel, a Seattle-based journalist, to investigate her daughter's death. Rachel discovers that Katie's friends all died in bizarre accidents at the same time as Katie's death. Rachel visits the Shelter Mountain Inn, where Katie and her friends saw the tape. She finds and views the tape; it contains strange and frightening imagery. She then receives a phone call from an unknown caller who whispers, "Seven days". Though initially skeptical, Rachel quickly begins to experience supernatural occurrences linked to the tape.

JEFFREY DEAN MORGAN REVEALED TO BUTCHER! The Boys Season 4 Full Reaction Watch Along: https://www.patreon.com/thereelrejects The Boys Season 4 Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, Spoiler Review, Easter Eggs, & Ending Explained! In "Dirty Business" Vice President-elect Victoria Neumann (Claudia Doumit) drops a bombshell, claiming democracy is a sham at a secretive right-wing fundraiser. She declares that corporations like Apple, Exxon, and Berkshire Hathaway run America, urging the wealthy attendees to support her coup against POTUS-elect Robert Singer (Jim Beaver). With Homelander (Antony Starr) backing her plan, a dangerous plot unfolds to replace Singer and his "woke mob." Homelander's villainy is on full display as he manipulates the elite, framing their coup as a necessity to prevent a supposed liberal takeover. Amidst this chaos, the episode ventures into NSFW territory, reminiscent of past shockers like "Herogasm." Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid) goes undercover as Web Weaver (Spider-Man parody) at the fundraiser but quickly regrets it as he's pulled into disturbing games by Tek Knight (Derek Wilson) and Ashley (Colby Minifie). Despite the absurdity, Hughie's emotional turmoil is palpable, culminating in a heartfelt breakdown to Annie (Erin Moriarty). The action intensifies when Mother's Milk has a heart attack and A-Train must save him. Annie and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) infiltrate Tek Knight's lair, uncovering Homelander's sinister plans for internment camps. They torture Tek by threatening his wealth, learning of the impending horrors. Meanwhile, Sage (Valorie Curry) faces a life-threatening crisis after being shot by MM (Laz Alonso), raising questions about her future as a Supe. The episode also delves into Butcher's (Karl Urban) psyche, revealing his hallucinations of Joe Kessler (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as a manifestation of guilt. With Election Year gearing up between Donald Trump & Joe Biden, this season seems to be honoring the America we know. The Boys Season 4 Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, Spoiler Review, Easter Eggs, & Ending Explained! We get the Gen V crossover with Cate & Sam as well as Ted Knight and Hughie Sr. getting Supers powers leading to a Simon Pegg death scene. The episode's bizarre plot centers around a lab run by Victoria Neumann, where her ex-boyfriend experiments with a Supe-killing virus. This leads to an unexpected confrontation with superpowered livestock—buffalos, sheep, and chickens—injecting even more madness into the storyline…but not before getting a parody of Marvel & DC panels at comic-con with their Vought announcement slate! The episode kicks off with The Boys infiltrating Victoria Neumann's secret lab, aiming to steal the Gen V virus, a dangerous bioweapon. Things go awry when the infected animals break free, attacking everyone in sight. Victoria threatens to blow up The Boys and Stan Edgar, who is temporarily out of prison, but her hesitation leads to a wild chase. Amidst the chaos, we see Butcher, MM, Frenchie, and Stan scrambling to escape the superpowered animals. The tension escalates when Victoria, Kimiko, and Starlight, despite their powers, fail to effectively counter the rogue livestock. Starlight's powers falter, and Kimiko's usual combat prowess is subdued, leaving viewers questioning their diminished abilities in this scenario. The episode also highlights the ongoing manipulation and corruption within Vought. At the V52 Expo, a parody of Comic-Con, various new franchises and shows are announced, including A-Train's movies and a new gender-flip series for Gen V's Cate and Sam. Meanwhile, Homelander, seemingly supportive of his son Ryan's reluctance to star in a TV show, ultimately manipulates him into punishing a director for harassment, showcasing the sinister father-son dynamics. Billy Butcher's plan to steal the Supe-killing virus fails, but he reveals a backup strategy involving the kidnapping of Sameer, Vic's ex who can recreate the virus. Butcher's conversation with Joe Kessler, who appears to be a figment of his brain damage, adds another layer of psychological complexity to his character. With Election Year gearing up between Donald Trump & Joe Biden, this season seems to be honoring the America we know. We tease out that question and more, including some monstrous motherhood themes. Tangents include: milkshakes, Dateline, breakup horror, worst fast food experiences, sharks, pubes, and some great would-you-rather and fuck-mary-kill topics. Horror Movie Talk

When you're smiling the whole world smiles at you. Maybe not in this case, but most of the resto of the time. Synopsis Dr. Rose Cotter, a workaholic psychiatrist at a busy hospital, sees a troubled patient that complains of hallucinations of people with creepy smiles terrifying her every waking moment. Initially Dr. Cotter doesn't believe the young woman, but when the same phenomenon begins happening to her, she must investigate the origins of the mysterious curse before it is too late. Review of Smile (2022) Smile is the first feature length film from writer/director Parker Finn and is a retelling and expansion of his short Laura hasn't slept. I haven't been this excited about a new director since Ari Aster. I loved this movie. It has depth, it's well crafted, and it features excellent performances from its cast. Lets start with the tone and theme of the movie. It's an on the nose allegory for the long lasting emotional effects of trauma, which specifically uses trauma as a device in the plot. The fact that it is so on the nose and that I didn't feel like it was ever ham handed in it's delivery, makes it all the more impressive to me. The tone is dark and helpless, and only sinks deeper throughout. The direction and editing was fantastic. It has some of the best jumpscares I have ever witnessed, and somehow they seemed innovative instead of hacky. I jumped and yelled out several times in the theater. In so doing, it reaches the elusive praise of being “scary” by which some viewers judge horror movies.  The sound design and music should almost get top billing on the poster. I've never been so disorientated and terrorized by ringing phones. The music is deeply unsettling and is composed by Cristobal Tapia de Veer, who did the music for White Lotus on HBOMax Sosie Bacon, relative of the famous Travis Bacon, plays Rose, and her devolution into madness was convincing and heart wrenching. The characters felt fleshed out, and the relationships felt real. There was one scene between Rose and her fiance played by The Boys' Jessie T. Usher, that felt false to me, but eventually his character and that relationship was framed in a way that even made that one moment make sense. It's a movie that can be easily compared to It Follows and Th e Babadook, but it doesn't ever feel derivative. I didn't think I'd find another horror movie this year that I'd love as much as Barbarian, but here we are, just weeks later. I can't stress this enough. I am a jaded, pretentious movie reviewer (see my comments on Terrifier 2's review for proof). I no longer watch horror movies out of love or desire. I watch them out of obligation. This movie and Barbarian opened my cold heart and gave me childlike joy and terror, much like the critic at the end of Ratatouie. My faith in filmmaking is restored when I see new creative writer/directors that can still shock and delight me in the movie theater. Thank you Parker Finn Score 10/10 Smile (2022) Add it to your collection or rent it now.Click here to buy

Warning: Do not listen to this episode unless you have seen Season 3 of the Amazon Prime series, “The Boys” or do not mind hearing key plot points. The Boys is set in a universe where superpowered individuals, called Supes, are recognized as heroes by the general public and work for a powerful corporation known as Vought International that markets and monetizes them. That barely scrapes the surface of an in-depth plot that turns the superhero genre upside down. The series features an ensemble cast that includes Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Chace Crawford, Laz Alonso, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, and Nathan Mitchell. This is the 4th episode of the podcast that covers The Boys. Seasons 1 and 2 were reviewed in Episodes 152 and 204, respectively. Also, Episode 277 features an exclusive interview with the executive producer of the animated spin-off The Boys: Diabolical Giancarlo Volpe. Andy Staples joins the podcast for the first time. Staples is a national college football writer for the Athletic and hosts a podcast of his own, but it is all in the sports realm. Staples steps outside his lane to offer insight into this series.
