Misinformation, fake news, hate speech, satire, the arts, political protest. These are all examples of what you might call disruptive speech. A free speech absolutist would say that all of these forms of speech should be tolerated, if not welcomed. On the other hand, it does look as though some of them are disruptive in a good way, and others are disruptive in a bad way. But can we tell the good from the bad in a way that isn't just politically partisan? Carl Fox, Lecturer in Applied Ethics at the IDEA Centre, thinks we can, and that we should treat different forms of disruptive speech differently. Here is Carl's paper on the subject in the Journal of Social Philosophy.Carl co-edited The Routledge Handbook of Philosophy and Media Ethics with fellow Ethics Untangled alumnus Joe Saunders, which contains a chapter by Carl on satire and stability. For further reading, there's Amy Olberding's book on manners and civility. In the interview, Carl mentions a paper on lying by Don Fallis. That's here:Fallis, D. 2009. “What Is Lying?” Journal of Philosophy 106(1): 29–56. And then there's the classic text on freedom and its limits, John Stuart Mill's On Liberty: Mill, J. S. 1974. Send us a textThe ongoing theme in industrial cybersecurity centers on two competing dynamics – the desire to expand our implementation of automation and Industry 4.0 technologies with the goal of using more and faster connections, along with the decision-making data each generates to improve the efficiency and quality of production. However, these goals now need to be counter-balanced against the heightened risks that all these connections spawn, and the doors they can open for hackers looking to shut down, extort or steal data from manufacturers. In this episode, Joe Saunders, the CEO and Founder of RunSafe Security, offers his take on securing these connections and data, as well:The on-going challenges associated with memory-based vulnerabilities.Tactics for supporting legacy OT code and minimizing the potential disruptions that can accompany software upgrades.Addressing vulnerabilities at a "class" level, instead of the one-at-a-time "whack-a-mole" approach.Embracing CISA's secure-by-demand edicts. The balancing act of more connections without lowering the security posture.Warnings about China and other state-sponsored threat actors. To catch up on past episodes, you can go to Manufacturing.net, IEN.com or MBTmag.com. This is Joe's 2nd time on the podcast, talking about customer violence in retail. Unfortunately the abuse of Retail staff from aggressive customers is increasing and in a survey conducted by the National Retailers Association, over 88% of retail workers interviewed had experienced abuse from customers, whilst over 85% of workers had experienced verbal or physical abuse whilst trying to prevent crime. So today we talk about – Is the customer always right ? Is this the “new normal” for retail ? How can we prevent it ? How often do Judo skills really pay the bills? How should protectors enhance their own de-escalation capabilities and what does the term Presilience mean? We were honoured to speak with Joe Saunders, Host of the Managing Violence Podcast, in person live in London as part of his European tour to answer questions including: To what extent is Presilience creative problem solving? What is the difference between resilience and Presilience? Do companies still treat compliance as the 'goal' rather than the baseline? How important is it to still have the skills of being able to deploy violence against aggressors anymore? Is there an application for managing your Principal and their expectations? How can we persuade potential aggressors that we are not good targets? Does everyone need to learn how to escape from a bear hug? How big a part of Presilience is de-escalation? If a self defence move takes more than 2 steps would the average person be able to remember it in a crisis? How should protectors operate in environments where use of force is prohibited? More about Joe Saunders: The Managing Violence Podcast was launched in 2018 by violence management specialist and lifelong martial artist, Joe Saunders. Having dedicated his working life to protecting the vulnerable and educating the world about the realities of violence, Joe established the Managing Violence Podcast as the preeminent destination for interviews with true global thought leaders in self-protection – from the hard skills to the soft skills and everything in between. Joe Saunders started training martial arts at the age of four, created a “Playground Police” force to protect bullied kids at the age of six, and has been fascinated with violence management and protection ever since. As an undergraduate psychology student in Brisbane, Australia, Joe took a part-time job bouncing in local nightclubs. This exposure to real-world violence fanned the flames of his desire to protect and led him into roles including executive protection, armed protection, hospital security and senior violence management education roles. Today, Joe works for one of Australia's leading risk management consultancies, Risk 2 Solution. He is the State Manager for Victoria and Tasmania as well as the National Practise Lead for Occupational Violence and Aggression. In their most shocking episode yet, Anne and Ryan welcome guest Joe Saunders (The Bread Cast), to discuss the grungy blockbuster, THE BATMAN, starring Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, and directed by Matt Reeves. Like the movie's villainous trio of Riddler, Penguin, and Catwoman, this rouge's gallery of reviewers will stop at nothing to challenge the Caped Crusader's newest incarnation, delving into the film's drab color palette, pessimistic political subtext, and epic 3-hour length in a spoiler-heavy discussion. All this, plus a detailed breakdown of where everyone parked before the movie, will have you shouting, "Holy Mama, Batman!"
"Your pain in my heart" - It's not a likely quote to see flying around the self-protection subculture and industry, but when it comes to better managing potential violence such thinking makes a world of difference. On this episode Australia's Joe Saunders of the "Managing Violence" podcast discusses the role of empathy in de-escalation ahead of his international tour of England and Switzerland along with a range of other related subjects. We also delve into areas not commonly covered in self-protection circles such as dealing with violent relationships in the workplace, extended family and at home. I also got an opportunity to discuss a regular elephant in the room - the timidity of martial arts students. Joe Saunders is one of the nicest guys you'll ever hope to meet in the hobby - he's an artist, a modeller, and a gifted teacher who wants to share his many skills so the rest of us can build better looking models and fight our miniature battles on better looking tables. In this interview, we talk about Joe's background with Games Workshop Canada (remember them?), building his YouTube channel, and his work with Battlefront. We also discuss Joe's recent decision to get into Napoleonics gaming (One of Us! One of Us! One of Us!). In the second half of the podcast, Mike and James go into the Canadian Content Corner to talk about a little known and horrific battle, Kapelsche Veer, in the winter of 1945 as Canadian troops (Lincoln and Welland Regiment, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders), some of them in canoes (!), cleared stubborn German defenders in a brutal week of fighting along the Maas River in northern Holland. In the What We're Doing segment, Mike talks about his early adventures in 3D printing, and his favourable impressions of Sam Mustafa's Napoleonics rules, Lasalle 2. James talks about how artillery takes up a lot of space on the battlefield, and revisits his beloved Bavarians being annoying to Napoleon at Hanau in 1813. We also talk about how things are looking better for HotLead in March (woot! woot!) and we look ahead to CanGames in Ottawa on the Victoria Day Weekend in May (hmmmm, gaming, or gardening????). Managing workplace violence as an executive security professional might seem really intuitive. But today's guest Joe Saunders, the host of the Managing Violence podcast, as well as a Director for SRM in Australia, is going to give us a real hard look at how managing workplace violence and de-escalation is fundamental to what we do as protectors. Tune in to this lively conversation to hear us chat with Joe about: The surprising place where workplace violence might rear its head (hint: it's where you would least expect it to be). Learn the 9-step process for proactively preparing for and dealing with occupational violence. How verbal judo is a handy skill when dealing with that difficult family member of the protectee or when we are dealing with an enraged or a frustrated employee. The two triggers of aggression and what to do in a situation where somebody becomes agitated to quickly to change the balance back to neutral? Sometimes EPs can be the handbrakes to happiness. How the tool of “assertive courtesy” will help you show respect while still maintaining boundaries. For EPs looking to shortcut the process of learning new skills and gain that experience in the shortest amount of time possible – hear Joe's surprising, off-the-wall suggestions for anyone who's looking to improve that de-escalation skills! Joe also cuts through a common myth and reminds of what most good protectors know to be true: “In close protection, if the job gets exciting, you definitely screwed it up. The job should be as boring and monotonous as possible. That means you did well.” Listen in to this week's powerful episode. It packs a punch! (pun intended.) I found it very rewarding interviewing Joe and finding out more about his background and the unique path he has travelled through to being the passionate Security and Risk Industry Thought Leader that he is today. In the interview we discuss our thoughts on some current industry "job ready" training deficiencies, the benefits of mentoring and we also cover various elements around conflict de-escalation and the power of empathy. As expected, we throw in a few war stories along the way as well!!
