https://wgnradio.com/chicagos-afternoon-news/chicagos-afternoon-news/ (Lisa Dent) has long been a significant and well-known presence in Chicago radio. She's best known for her long run as morning host at WUSN 99.5-FM (US99), which garnered her a trophy case full of awards including Major Market Morning Show of the Year and induction into the prestigious Country Radio Hall of Fame. But as you'll hear, her dream station was always “Chicago's Very Own” WGN. A native of Rockford, Lisa began her radio career in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin as a mere child back in 1981. Since then, she's charmed radio audiences in markets including Minneapolis, San Diego, Seattle, and Houston. In 2002, she returned to her ‘home market' of Chicago, hosting her dynamic run at then-CBS country music station US99, and IHeartRadio's Country effort, Big 95.5. Her longevity, exceptional on-air work, and strong community involvement made Lisa Dent a household name in Chicago, putting her in the company of radio greats like Larry Lujack, Steve Dahl, Wally Phillips, Bob Sirott and John Records Landecker. Ironically, she works with Bob and John now every weekday at WGN. (02:25) Lisa shares when she FIRST knew ‘radio' was going to be her thing – and WHERE she wanted to do it! (02:43) Working in all size markets, and for some of the best stations in the country, Lisa shares why she chose some stations over others, how things changed, and why she's where she is now! (04:19) Lisa reveals the steps that have made her such a powerhouse in Chicago—on and off the air. (06:01) When a serious health issue hit Lisa, she re-evaluated a LOT, including how radio was treating women. Hear how it changed her career path going forward. (10:07) Along the way, Lisa's won just about every award a broadcaster can, including induction into the Country Radio Hall of Fame. In this interview, she outlines steps other talents might consider to perhaps win some awards of their own! (13:15) In a reflective moment, Lisa offers things she knows NOW, that she WISHED she knew way back at her first stations like Fort Atkinson, WI and Rockford, IL. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1383785385414581 (WGN VIDEO: Meet LISA DENT) https://wgnradio.com/chicagos-afternoon-news/thank-you-thursday-a-special-thanks-to-veterinarians/ (WGN AUDIO: Lisa's "Thank You Thursday)" http://rhzrbbwk.podcastwebsites.com/one-minute-martinizing-courtesy/ (One Minute Martinizing ) by David MartinPlease help us thank these supporters who help keep BRANDWIDTH ON DEMAND free! https://my.captivate.fm/www.musicmaster.com (Musicmaster) https://bit.ly/KipperSwag (Radio Swag Shop) Get the FREE BRANDwidth Newsletter HERE.

Minutes 36:2600 to 2:00 IntroComing to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk. You'll recognize yourself in these true-life stories from women who are walking their lives while their lives walk them and the lasting difference these journeys have made. I'm your host, Diane Wyzga.Do you ever wonder if people listen to what you said?Have you ever wanted to know what to say to get the professional connections you seek?Does the idea of showing up and speaking give you Stagefright Willies? If you answered ‘yes' to any of these questions, then this podcast episode is for you.Today my guest is Catherine Johns, a professional speaker and expert in communication who's joining us from the Windy City of Chicago, Illinois. Today Catherine brings her powerful experiences as a broadcaster in large radio markets to coaching executives and entrepreneurs who want to make meaningful connections at every turn, real or virtual. Catherine also turned her professional speaking skills to a book: Show Up and Shine to help women who've been overlooked and unheard in their professional lives.I invited Catherine to talk with us about her expertise as a professional speaker, what is personal presence and charisma, how to become more confident being heard and listened to in the business arena, and more. Welcome to the podcast, Catherine!2:00 to 6:00 Start From Where You AreI read recently that you and your husband took a stroll around your neighborhood meeting up with folks along the way. If I met up with you as you were taking a turn about the block, what's the first thing I'd notice about you? Energy! That's the first thing we notice about most people. We all carry a certain energy; it's palpable, visible and tactileWe all have energy; we can shape it and use it, tooSo, having some time to walk along together what else might I get to know about you?Catherine's first priority is getting to know the host by asking questions and listening closely to the answersMost people feel under-heard most of the timeA tip to being more charismatic is not what we put “out there” but what we take inWe want to be seen and heard with a willing partnerQuick story: Catherine was talk show host. A favorite regular feature was Bug House Square based on the “loonies” who stood on a soapbox in Washington Square Park to be heard. Catherine opened the radio lines to take calls asking people questions from many many people who just wanted to talk about themselves. These folks waited a long time on the phone - sometimes an hour or more - just for the chance to be heard. The lesson for Catherine: how to approach people and what we need from each otherToday we still need to be seen and heard6:20 to 17:25 A Bit of Back Story: Radio Broadcasting CareerI'm a child of radio. I remember my mother listening to a morning broadcast out of New York City called Rambling With Gambling. In my law school years I drove home from class listening to the old Lux Radio Hour episodes like The Green Hornet and Yukon King; the sorts of programs what my dad listened to. Q: So, before we get to your professional speaking and coaching practice and your book, Show Up & Shine, I'd like to know a bit about what brought you to radio in the first place. Question: Would you tell us what was the draw about radio for you?His name was Byron. When Catherine was a freshman at Valparaiso University majoring in nursing a fellow in her dorm suggested Catherine go on campus radio because she had the voice for itThis idea was opposite of how Catherine saw herselfCatherine went to the audition because she had a crush on Byron and ended up getting the gig and he didn'tCatherine stumbled into radio on the campus station: The Station on the Tracks - next to the freight train tracksCatherine was shown what to do and told, “Now just be sexy.”Over time Catherine has built 3 different careers on her voiceLesson: we often don't know our gift until someone holds a mirror upQuestion: What came naturally to you to be able to sit in a studio to learn about and then become a radio broadcaster?Catherine is curious about a lot of things and about peopleAsking questions and listening to what people sayCatherine always loved wordsConfused parents when she decided to go into nursingAnd then things changed: make yourself available for another opportunityHost: This is how the road goes: we walk until we can't. Fortunately, someone pointed out a never considered opportunityWhen Catherine decided to change majors and schools to get her degree in broadcasting the head of the department told her “no place for gals in broadcasting.”At that moment Catherine said, “Watch me!”And, what happened next?Catherine dug in, studied and worked her way in only 4 years' time from graduation to WLS Radio Chicago, a major market radio station!A gal wound up on a major broadcasting station! It was Catherine. So there!Catherine eventually got her own showQuestion: If a listener is thinking about making a leap into radio or some such place where “gals might not make it” what are highlights that made it all worthwhile, for youCatherine loves conversationRadio is all about conversationCatherine got lucky at WLS Chicago with the advent of ensemble morning show radio conceptInstead of being the News Gal Catherine had an opportunity to develop conversation on the airCatherine earned Side Chick exposure because Larry Lujack (the host) created space for herLarry Lujack, also called Superjock, Lawrence of Chicago, Uncle Lar, and King of the Corn Belt, was a Top 40 music radio disc jockey who was well known for his world-weary sarcastic styleIf a story was interesting, funny, or entertaining Catherine was in the spotlight where she learned to the craft of telling the story, bringing in the listeners and knowing when to stop Practical Tip: Knowing when to stop: most people “get high” on energy, excitement, and take it too farCatherine learned the brilliant Power of the PauseCatherine's mantra: “Say it once, say it well and zip it!”One of the ways people over-talk is by repeating themselvesMake your point well and leave space for the other person to say something, too17:25 to 34:23 Changing the Narrative: Reinventing Yourself -> Speakers Programs The broadcasting world came to an end as so many things do, but like so many successful professional women you chose this opportunity to Begin Anew - you reinvented yourself. You took all that wonderful knowledge, experience, ah ha's and so on and reinvented yourself as professional speaker and coach. Question: Would you let us know how that came about and the experience of moving into the next roll.Catherine got fired, as so many transitions beginRadio had been her life for 25 yearsCatherine wondered if she was able to anything else; but there were no options to quitCatherine herself: what did I really love about radio?Chunking up and chunking downChunking up: looking from the mega perspective at what she did: she is a performerJohn Landecker was another model on WLS ChicagoJohn Records Landecker is an American Top40/oldies disc jockey best known for his trademark saying "Records truly is my middle name" and creating Boogie Check, Americana Panorama, and satirical songs and bits based on current events such as "Make a Date with the Watergate", and "Press My Conference".Chunking down (granular activities): what are the skills, talents, abilities that go into being a Morning Show Side Chick: is curious, asks questions, gathers information, synthesize it, shares what she learns, balanced competing interests, team player, plays well with othersCatherine asked: where to take this tool box outside of a studio, where else to applyCatherine decided she wanted to speak but didn't like professional speakers - too much egoA conversation with a NSA conference attendee revealed her next role: be a trainerCatherine's 2 Practical Tips: Get membership in a professional society to learn and be exposed to people who do what you want to do + realize transitions can be time-consuming and depressing and hard; so stick with it through the rough patchesThis led to Catherine to a presentation skills position and eventually to professional speaker and communication expertHost notes themes of luck and resilience + diligence + mind-set to Begin Anew as well as Catherine's faith that this is the right path as more and more people and venues and opportunities show up. Willingness is hallmark of Catherine's story. Question: I'm curious: which audiences were you drawn to and how come?Professional women who were not yet senior executivesCatherine got her training gig because she was open to peopleWhen we are open to people and recognize that there is the chance for “luck”Story: A friend of a friend of a friend she met in a manicure salon led to an audition in New York; but the feedback was, “Catherine needs work on presentation skills - no eye contact.”Her experience was in radio for 25 years; there is no eye contact in radio; BUT! It was a key skill Catherine could master and meanwhile was hired for her energy to command a roomWhat the employer was looking for was a certain kind of energy and Catherine had itQuestion: Did you know you had this Super Power of commanding a room, an inherent energy? The CEO pointed it out to Catherine that she had the certain kind of energyWhen Catherine began to think about herself as a person who has influence or sway over a group so much made sense, so much fell into placeHost observes the themes of Catherine's follow-up, risk taking, persistence until something tangible rewards that. To be successful with the intimacy of radio one would have to have some form of inherent energy and draw in their voice to keep the listener engaged. Question: What is the difference between energy, vibe, charisma, and presence or are they different ways of saying the same thing and, if so, what is that thing? These words are difficult to defineCatherine thinks of charisma as the energy that happens in interactionWe are charismatic in connection with anotherThe exchange of energy is a charismaMany different ways to have charismaThere is that something you want more ofHost: Maybe it's an energy vibration exchanged between human beings. We as human beings are exchanging energy and looking for those who are receptive to our energy. Question: Along those lines of connection, you were on a trajectory that would eventually intersect with COVID. As we transition from Zoom to a hybrid way of some online/virtual and some in-person, What's changed in business, what's the same, what will still be important?34:23 to 36:26 ConclusionHere we are, at the end of the road but not the journey. Thank you for listening to Part 1 of this in-depth Guest InnerView episode of Stories From Women Who Walk with your host Diane Wyzga and my guest Catherine Johns, a professional speaker, expert in communication and the author of Show Up and Shine to help women who've been overlooked and unheard in business. “Everyone has a story to tell and when its your personal story you’re selling yourself, too. And that, to me, is a very easy sell.” — Rick Kaempfer Today I interviewed Rick Kaempfer and David Stern of Eckhartz Press. Rick Kaempfer is the co-founder and publisher of Eckhartz Press. In addition to being the publisher, he is the author of several Eckhartz Press releases, inclucing "EveryCubEver", “Father Knows Nothing”, “Records Truly Is My Middle Name” (with John Records Landecker) and “The Living Wills” (with Brendan Sullivan), Rick has been published several times before (including a novel “$everance” and a how-to-book about radio called “The Radio Producer’s Handbook”). He was also a member of the media for more than twenty years as the producer of two highly acclaimed radio shows (Steve Dahl & Garry Meier and John Records Landecker), and still covers the industry as the media critic for the Illinois Entertainer. He has watched the media landscape change over the past thirty years from a front row seat, and is excited to use that experience as the publisher of Eckhartz Press. David Stern is the co-founder and publisher of Eckhartz Press, and the author of “The Balding Handbook”. After a 20+ year sales and marketing career, and a ten year stint as a principal in a Chicago advertising agency, Stern comes to Eckhartz Press uniquely qualified to tackle the realities of an ever-changing publishing landscape. He and Kaempfer have been collaborating in one form or another since they met at the University of Illinois in the early 1980s (when both must have been mere children). Stern is also one of the officers of Eckhartz Press’ parent company Just One Bad Century, Inc, and proud to call himself a life long (“City Boy”) Chicagoan. John Records Landecker is a bona fide radio star, soon to be inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. He’s perhaps best know for his trademark saying "Records Truly is My Middle Name” also the name of his book ─ now entering it’s second printing with an updated “Hall of Fame” edition. Starting in small market Michigan radio, he quickly ascended to major markets like Philly and Chicago, where for years he held court at the legendary “Big 89, WLS” (or as he put it, “the Enormous but not too gaudy 89”). There he was part of a lineup that included such radio luminaries as Larry Lujack, Tommy Edwards, Fred Winston, and Dick Biondi to name just a few. John is also famous for benchmark bits like “Boogie Check”, “Americana Panorama” and “Press My Conference”. Next came stints at other Chicago stations including WJMK, Magic 104.7 and his weekend show "Into the Seventies”. All this was followed by a return to WLS, both on AM and FM in the 2000’s, and he’s still going strong today with a show on his local hometown station WEFM! In this episode, we’re treated to some strong insights from a Hall of Famer who has been to the mountaintop – and is not afraid to speak out.
Ep94: New Radio Hall of Famer John Records Landecker, along with his daughter, Amy Landecker. Plus farts, tampons, dirty babies, dating, and much, much MORE!!! The post Lossano and Friends – John Records Landecker appeared first on Radio Misfits.
This is a rewind of an interview with John Records Landecker we initially did in April, 2013. John will end his current stint at WLS-FM July 31 after his evening show. He refuses to say he's retiring. He'll fly to Los Angeles to spend time with his granddaughter and daughter, Amy Landecker of "Transparent." Then he may do a podcast, or, who knows. This is as good a time as any to remind our our early influences were not political or talkers. They were guys like John Records Landecker who had gigs we were never good enough for and in markets too big for us. The post from the original air date of our interview is below... If you grew up in the midwest in the 1970s and never heard of John, what rock were you hiding under? John Records Landecker was a fixture of nighttime rock and roll radio at WLS in Chicago and at stops in many markets thereafter. Yeah, one of my radio idols. Get over it. Yeah, he wrote a book, Records Truly is My Middle Name. Get over it. John still works in rock and roll radio, my first love. Get over it. He does nights at WLS-FM, the sister station of the ersatz AM legend and now talk giant. John was never dragged kicking and screaming into talk radio, and damn him for being so lucky!
Lossano and Friends! episode 032 Amy Landecker (Amazon Prime’s Transparent), John Records Landecker (94.7 WLS), Jen DeSalvo (89 WLS), Amy Zanglin (Nude Hippo) join Jim Gronemann, Ashley Lobo, Chris Cwiak, Ann Sheehan and Tony Lossano.. Amy Landecker stars in Paul Reiser’s new NBC comedy “The Paul Reiser Show” as Claire, Paul’s loving and endlessly supportive wife, who juggles her professional career as a psychologist and her personal life as a wife and mother of two. A Chicago native, Landecker was exposed to an entertainer’s life early on as the daughter of legendary Top 40 DJ, John ‘Records’ Landecker. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, she honed her acting craft performing with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, The Goodman Theatre and Victory Gardens. Landecker won an Obie Award starring opposite Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon in “Bug,” written by Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy Letts. Her memorable guest-starring television roles include the Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning series “Mad Men,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Louie,” “Medium,” “Conviction,” “Law & Order: SVU” and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.” Her feature film work includes last year’s Academy Award nominated film “A Serious Man,” from Oscar-winning writers/directors Joel and Ethan Coen, “Dan In Real Life,” “Temporary Girl” and “Light It Up.” Amy currently divides her time between New York City and Los Angeles with her husband and daughter.
Rick Kaempfer just released an amazingly entertaining satirical novel: $everance. It is the first book I've managed to finish in two years (due to my preoccupation with my crazy toddler) and I laughed out loud many times while reading it - yeah, it's that funny! If you work in the radio business you'll love the inside view of the industry and if you're not in the media you will certainly learn a lot of eye-opening trade secrets. He also co-wrote an earlier book (with John Swanson), The Radio Producers Handbook. Both books cover a subject matter he knows all too well: broadcasting. Before becoming a full-time writer, Rick was a nationally recognized radio producer in Chicago for Steve Dahl & Garry Meier (1987-1991) and John Records Landecker (1993-2003). I first met him at WLUP when he produced The Morning Loop Guys (2005). He has also hosted his own radio show, wrote and hosted national radio specials, and currently co-owns an advertising agency in Chicago. Rick has some amazing blogs (links are below) that I read regularly and highly recommend, plus he is also a contributing editor at Shore Magazine and a humor writer for The Beachwood Reporter. Rick literally writes something new for public consumption every day. I don't know how he does it all while raising three boys!
