In today's episode I am excited to speak with John Strohmeyer. John is a Tax and Estate Planning Attorney in Houston, Texas. After working in several law firms, John started his own firm about five years ago where he helps clients through the maze of estate planning, tax, & probate law to help them leave No Unfinished Business® John is active in the tax and estate planning communities like the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, the International Tax Committee of the Tax Section of the Texas State Bar, and the ABA. He also is a regular speaker on these issues to individuals and lawyers alike. But more than just a lawyer, John is a thought leader for lawyers who want to run effective and client-centered law practice. His wonderful podcast, Five Star Counsel, which has more than one hundred episodes ask a provocative question question: "What would a law firm built by the founders of Disney, Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, and Zappos look like.” In his podcast he draws on interviews and his own expertise in the law and almost three years as a customer service professional as the Night Manager at the Four Seasons in Austin, Texas before law school. In our conversation we discuss his path to law as a college Zoology major and hotel manager, what is unique about a tax and estates practice, the lessons that lawyers should take from high-end experiences like the Four Seasons (and why they not be the lessons they think they should take), knowing and sharing your value as a lawyer when helping clients solve problems, the benefits of a fixed fee practice, techniques for marketing and sales other than having the lowest price product, why his dogs are on the staff page of his website, and more.
In this episode, Wayne Pollock, the founder of the Law Firm Editorial Service, interviews John Strohmeyer, proprietor of Strohmeyer Law, an estate planning, tax, and probate law firm in Houston. John is the host of two podcasts that serve different functions. The first, Five Star Counsel, answers the question, "What would a law firm built by the founders of Disney, Four Seasons, Amazon, and Zappos look like?" Before law school, John was Night Manager of the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin, Texas, where he received a crash course on best practices for client service. This podcast helps him brand himself as an authority on client service at law firms. The second podcast, No Unfinished Business, allows John to nurture his referral relationships by having referral partners discuss the areas related to estate planning, taxes, and probate that they specialize in. In this episode, John and Wayne discuss, among other things:- How his time as night manager of the Austin Four Seasons Hotel impacted his legal practice- Why he chose to host podcasts instead of writing blog posts and articles- Why he launched a podcast focused on client service, but not on explicitly attracting clients to his firm- Why he launched a podcast focused on referral partners- His advice for lawyers who want to begin podcasting You can watch the video recording of the episode here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kftekj-Bpg. Starting your own practice isn't something they teach in law school. Join me as I sit down with legal professionals to hear firsthand accounts of just how they did it. In this episode, Neil and John discuss: Transferring the lessons from The Four Seasons and Disney to your business. Focusing in on what most of your clients want. Hiring for your firm before individuals have graduated law school and passed the bar. Answering your clients questions, and training your employees. Key Takeaways: You don't need chicken soup and cold meds on stand by. Optimize for what your clients are dealing with and train recognition by the staff, that is free. Do what you can do that is reasonable and available. Allowing an apprenticeship style training program in your firm can help to give your firm great team members, but also help to teach in the moment. Recognize the importance of your referral partners, and let them know that you are thinking of them. "Focus in on what most of your clients want. What kind of client experience is your front-of-house staff creating? Attorney John Strohmeyer gives us tips and strategies to create exceptional client experiences that are simple and inexpensive to implement. John Strohmeyer spent four years working for the Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts between college and law school, so he knows what it takes to create a remarkable client experience. Attorneys often forget that their client service coordinators and receptionists are an essential part of their sales teams. The client journey begins long before they ever meet the attorney. Clients are coming to you for solutions. Therefore, helping your clients achieve their primary objective as easily as possible should be the focus of your client experience. What would a law firm built by the founders of Disney, Four Seasons, Amazon, and Zappos look like? This is the big question that John seeks to answer in his Five Star Counsel podcast. Your client experience starts as soon as a potential client contacts you. Make sure you've hired the right person to be that first point of contact. Giving your clients a roadmap that outlines your process is another simple step you can take to creating a better client experience. In this episode, Steve Fretzin and John Strohmeyer discuss:Recognizing how lawyers and law firms are different from other types of companies.Definition of customer service for a law firm. Minimize the things that don't help you solve the problem your clients bring to you.Take care of your referral partners with exceptional service as that is where your primary business comes from. Key Takeaways:We are all selling some sort of product and it is, primarily, one of three flavors: stuff, results, or entertainment and fun. Understanding what type of business you are changes how you do customer service. By focusing on what you do, you aren't getting distracted with other areas of law that are outside your area of focus. Consider what is good for your staff, not just your client. Get the right people in the right jobs to do things for you - you, as the lawyer, cannot do everything all the time. "Most of this service isn't about spending more money. Clients aren't looking for you to shower them with gifts and making sure your office is decked out in marble and glass. It's taking care of things for them and making it easy." — John Strohmeyer Connect with John Strohmeyer: Website: https://www.strohmeyerlaw.com/Show: https://www.fivestarcounsel.com/ Connect with Steve Fretzin:LinkedIn: Steve FretzinTwitter: @stevefretzinFacebook: Fretzin, Inc.Website: Fretzin.comEmail: Steve@Fretzin.comBook: The Ambitious Attorney: Your Guide to Doubling or Even Tripling Your Book of Business and more!YouTube: Steve FretzinCall Steve directly at 847-602-6911 Show notes by Podcastologist Chelsea Taylor-Sturkie Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. John Strohmeyer, founder of Strohmeyer Law in Houston, joins Nick Guinn (ABA/YLD District Representative) to discuss client service considerations every lawyer should consider. John explains how there is more to client service than deciding to be more like Disney or Ritz-Carlton.
So many people right now are talking about the importance of the client experience and gift giving and wow packages that you give your clients to make them fall in love with you. I can tell you one of the most expensive lessons that I've learned myself personally is that gift giving is not going to solve your customer support and your customer experience problems.
