Star Power, de Alain Bécoulet _______________ Todos sabemos que, para fazer face às alterações climáticas, o Mundo tem forçosamente de diminuir o consumo de energias fósseis. O petróleo e o gás são, além disso, altamente sensíveis a perturbações geopolíticas, como os últimos meses têm mostrado, com impacto directo na vida das pessoas. No entanto, a verdade é que a energia é necessária, e as energias renováveis ainda não permitem fazer face às necessidades energéticas, de tal forma que o grosso da energia consumida no mundo continua a ser de combustíveis fósseis. Mas e se vos dissesse que existe uma fonte de energia alternativa que não emite dióxido de carbono para a atmosfera, tem um baixo risco associado e é, além disso, virtualmente ilimitada? Parece exagero, mas é verdade. Chama-se energia de fusão nuclear. Esta energia é ainda mais poderosa do que a energia nuclear clássica (de fissão), utiliza matérias ilimitadas (átomos e isótopos de hidrogénio) e, ao contrário daquela, produz muito pouca radioactividade. E se vos dissesse, ainda, que tem havido nos últimos tempos avanços promissores que podem tornar esta energia viável nas próximas décadas? Há muito tempo, há quase um século, que sabemos que é possível produzir energia de fusão. Por uma razão simples: é ela a fonte de energia do Sol, onde as altas temperaturas e a enorme gravidade geram a fusão de átomos de hidrogénio. No entanto, conseguir gerar este tipo de reacção na terra tem-se revelado muito difícil. Esta dificuldade é de tal forma, que há até uma piada batida no meio: “faltam só 30 anos até termos energia de fusão… e hão-de sempre faltar!”. Abordei a energia de fusão pela primeira vez no 45 Graus, no final de 2018, no episódio 42, com Luís O. Silva, físico e professor do Técnico. Em qualquer outra altura das últimas décadas, é quase certo que um episódio gravado há 3 anos continuaria perfeitamente actual. No entanto, desta vez não é assim -- e por bons motivos. Tem havido nos últimos anos desenvolvimentos importantes nesta área. Só no último ano, verificaram-se dois dos maiores avanços concretos das últimas décadas no caminho para produzir energia de fusão. Em Agosto do ano passado, nos EUA, a National Ignition Facility (NIF) bateu o record no que toca ao rácio de energia gerada pelo processo de fusão nuclear face à energia que foi necessário injectar para accionar a fusão (a energia gerada continua a ser menos do que a energia injectada, mas é um resultado muito promissor). E mais recentemente, em fevereiro deste ano (o que, em Ciência, é o mesmo que dizer -- ontem), o laboratório JET, no Reino Unido, bateu o record do máximo de energia total gerada pelo processo de fusão. Ainda faltam muitos passos para tornar esta energia viável, mas estes são dois progressos muito importantes; de tal forma que ainda em Março houve uma cimeira importante sobre o tema organizada pelo governo norte-americano. Ao mesmo tempo, estes progressos e o imperativo de encontrar soluções para as alterações climáticas tem levado a um aumento do investimento, inclusive privado, com dezenas de novas empresas a tentarem, actualmente, serem as primeiras a produzir energia de fusão viável. Dans l'imaginaire collectif, Casablanca est la ville du football marocain. Avec ses deux grands clubs, le Wydad et le Raja, c'est elle qui concentre le plus de supporters, mais cela fait bien longtemps que la capitale économique ne fait plus la pluie et le beau temps dans le royaume. De quoi alimenter la nostalgie de certains Casablancais. Lino Bacco est une légende du journalisme sportif au Maroc, l'une des mémoires du foot marocain. Il vient de publier un livre Et alors !, où il raconte cette époque aujourd'hui révolue. De notre correspondant à Casablanca, Un superbe hôtel-particulier et un hall chargé d'histoire, toute une collection de vieilles radios dont une fonctionne encore... On y entend le direct de Radio Mars, la radio dédiée au sport que Lino Bacco, 79 ans, a co-fondée en 2009 : « Nous sommes dans les locaux de Radio Mars. J'ai un peu plus d'un demi-siècle, je dirais, de journalisme sportif. J'ai commencé exactement en 1967. Je débarque dans la rédaction du petit Marocain. » Casablanca, l'ancien siège de la Fédération À l'époque, tout se passe à Casablanca. « Je suis d'origine sicilienne. Mon père est né à Casablanca. Ma mère est née à Rabat. Je suis né à Casablanca. Le football marocain s'est décidé entre le siège de la Fédération qui était à Casablanca, rue Dumont d'Urville, entre un café, le Marignan, et puis le stade Philippe où, juste en face, il y avait le journal. Tous les après-midi, le secrétaire général qui était Ahmed Antifi venait, ainsi que Daniel Pilard, qui était le patron des sports. On se retrouvait donc au café. Et au café, on parlait de quoi ? On parlait de foot. On parlait de la fédération. On parlait des problèmes, et c'est là qu'ils prenaient les grandes décisions justement pour le football marocain », raconte Lino Bacco. « La preuve, c'est qu'il y a quatre clubs rabatis en première division » Jusqu'à aujourd'hui, Casablanca est la ville du foot au Maroc. Dans son stade emblématique Mohammed-V, résonnent chaque week-end les chants des supporters du Wydad ou du Raja. Alors, lorsque les stades de la CAN 2025 ont été annoncés, des supporters casablancais se sont sentis soudain nostalgiques. « Il y a des gens qui sont déçus, qui disent ''Oui mais pourquoi, pourquoi Rabat a quatre stades et nous un seul ?''... C'est ça, C'est tout. Le centre de gravité s'est déplacé, qu'on le veuille ou non. Et puis, la preuve, c'est qu'il y a quatre clubs rabatis en première division. Il y a l'AS FAR, il y a le FUS, il y a Yacoub El Mansour et il y a Touarga. Donc, c'est tout : 4 à 2, ce n'est pas difficile (rires). » Mais Casablanca pourrait retrouver son rang d'ici à 2030. En ce moment, on construit aux portes de la ville le plus grand stade du monde, 115 000 places, où doit se jouer des matchs de la Coupe du monde 2030. Both patrolled briefly off the coast of China before being placed in reserve at the war's end. In 1922, Yamashiro became the first battleship in the IJN to successfully launch aircraft.During the 1930s, both ships underwent a series of modernizations and reconstructions. Fusō was modernized in two phases (1930–33, 1937–41), while Yamashiro was reconstructed from 1930 to 1935. The modernization increased their armor, replaced and upgraded their machinery, and rebuilt their superstructures into a distinctive pagoda mast style. Despite the expensive reconstructions, both vessels were obsolescent by World War II, and neither saw significant action in the early years of the war. Fusō served as a troop transport in 1943, while Yamashiro was relegated to training duty in the Inland Sea. Both received better anti-aircraft weapons in 1944 before transferring to Singapore in August 1944.Fusō and Yamashiro were the only two Japanese battleships at the Battle of Surigao Strait, the southernmost action of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and both were lost in the early hours of 25 October 1944. Fusō burned and sank within an hour of being torpedoed. Yamashiro encountered six U. S. Navy battleships and eight cruisers, sinking along with Vice Admiral Shōji Nishimura. Therapeutic or focused ultrasound began being applied to neurologic conditions less than a decade ago, but its potential in a wide spectrum of brain applications is high. In today's podcast, web editor Nicole Raleigh speaks with Dr Neal Kassell, chair and founder of the Focused Ultrasound Foundation and previously a neurosurgeon, who created the Foundation in 2006 to improve the lives of millions of people with serious medical disorders by accelerating the development and adoption of focused ultrasound. Focus ultrasound (FUS) has the potential to revolutionise therapy to the same degree that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning revolutionised diagnosis, says Kassell. The effect of the treatment can be observed as it is being administered in real time by using such imaging; it is image-guided therapy. Of the 180 indications in various stages of development using FUS, the number of regulatory approvals and reimbursements is increasing. Dialogue has shifted from ‘if' to ‘when' and the Focused Ultrasound Foundation works to make that when ‘now'. And it all begins with evidence, evidence come from research.
