Paring Down: Realistic minimalism to live more intentionally
How do you know an idea is true? That's a pretty big question, but I've found that the best way to know if an idea is worth exploring is to find out how long it's been around. Because, as Mark Twain famously said, "There's no such thing as a new idea." Sage wisdom usually comes in the form of a repetitive idea that respected spiritual and thought leaders have landed on independently over hundreds - even thousands - of years. Today on the podcast, we welcome Suzanne Johnson, whose book Vital Simplicity pulls on the work of Charles Wagner - who authored The Simple Life in 1895. Living simply as a means to internal fulfillment is a timeless truth - a conclusion that dates back as far as 600 BCE. If that's not motivation to at least explore the principle of living with less...I don't know what is! Eat without using a phone. Sit in a room with your thoughts, and nothing else. Magic happens when you give it space to exist."-@monkwithquotes"Mystical prayer is nothing like orthodox prayer. In mysticism, there is no outside power, person, or agency to pray to that will bring spiritual revelation to you. Prayer, then, is not petitioning for salvation, nor is it seeking some blessing from an external power. It is the receptive attitude of listening to the Divine within your own being. Prayer is finding that state of consciousness where fear and desire fade, and you come into a profound stillness and peace. It is the atmosphere of peace spoken of in the Bible. It is the "still small voice" of Truth that comes without words and thoughts, revealing the nature of Spirit.Meditation is the path to "answered prayer," that consciousness wherein the nature of God is revealed. Meditation is not an end in, and of, itself. It is the means by which you bring yourself into a prayerful attitude. The main purpose of meditation is to move you out of the realm of words and thoughts, for which there are many techniques."-John Stephenson, The Fullness of Joy Support the show
