Another senseless death captured the world's attention as the video of Tyre Nichols final moments of life were released. How can society trust people in authority when some of them act in horrific ways? "Like so many, I was outraged and deeply pained to see the horrific video of the beating that resulted in Tyre Nichols' death," President Biden said in a statement on Friday evening. "It is yet another painful reminder of the profound fear and trauma, the pain, and the exhaustion that Black and Brown Americans experience every single day." Judge Rosemarie Aquilina shares how her career was molded by her upbringing and the importance of really listening. We also talk about the magical question she asked during her infamous trial that I have continued to ask to this day. WE'LL DISCUSS: How her desire to be heard as a child played a role in becoming a lawyer, and how a child abuse case moved her to become a judge Why she decided to stop writing during law school How her approach to the infamous sexual abuse trial of sports doctor Larry Nassar allowed for the Army of Survivors to come forward ABOUT JUDGE AQUILINA: Judge Rosemarie Aquilina was elected to the 30th Circuit Court for Ingham County in November of 2008. She became part of Michigan's history by becoming the first female JAG Officer in the Michigan Army National Guard when she enlisted. Ultimately, she became one of the most requested JAG Officers because of her dedication to service and the soldiers she served with. Judge Aquilina opened Aquilina Law Firm, PLC, which grew to become very successful and which resulted in her becoming the host of Ask the Family Lawyer, which became syndicated. In addition to all the other amazing things Rosemarie does, she is also a published author with three books under belt- All Rise, Feel No Evil, and Triple Cross Killer. Her books are thrillers from start to finish, keeping everyone guessing and on the edge of their seat. Judge Rosemarie Aquilina of Michigan's 30th Circuit, Ingham County said that Donald Trump's recent Save America rally comments about possible pardons to January 6 rioters was improper and potentially dangerous. She also criticized Trump for his comments about mass protests against "illegal" prosecutions that might be brought against him. Judge Aquilina called for a national voting rights law that would promote voter participation and for the elimination of the electoral college system for presidential elections. Dr. Phil talks to one of the most important and influential judges in recent American history. Judge Rosemarie Aquilina was the first female JAG officer in the U.S. military justice system and the first female commencement speaker at Michigan State University. She presided over the first Zoom jury trial, and is a leading national advocate for victims' rights, reforming gun safety laws, bail reform, and enacting tough bystander laws. She has presided over some of the biggest trials in the country, including the Larry Nasser sexual assault case and the biggest sexual assault case in the history of the University of Michigan. Bringing a powerful need to be heard and understood to her courtroom, Judge Aquilina is changing the way criminals are brought to justice and the way victims of powerful people are treated. https://www.drphilintheblanks.com/ Interested in advertising on the show? In this part 2 of our interview with Judge Aquilina, she discusses the letter Larry Nassar wrote to her, which she read at his sentencing. Nassar's line, "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned," had the entire courtroom gasp as Judge Aquilina read those words. The letter showed Nassar's cold heart and disdain toward children and women.Intro-- Film Glitch by Snowflake (c) copyright 2017 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/snowflake/56350 Ft: reusenoiseOutro-- I Have Often Told You Stories (guitar instrumental) by Ivan Chew (c) copyright 2013 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/ramblinglibrarian/41284

Stephanie Early Green was here to talk about Believed in Episode 077, and somehow made it through Erin Lee Carr's excellent but harrowing At The Heart Of Gold also...though we both wept at various points. The film comes to HBO May 3, but you can listen to our discussion about the importance of testimony, the miasma of guilt and responsibility around Nassar, and our admiration for Judge Aquilina right now. And a podcast with a Cold Case section can't NOT talk about Wondery's very deep dive into the disappearance of Susan Cox Powell, Cold...so that's what we did, and while we both liked the podcast, it's got the occasional narrative issue...and Stephanie isn't sure how much further she can go with this bleak and possibly unsolvable mystery. It's not easy listening this week, but good storytelling isn't always fun, as we'll discuss in The Blotter Presents 095. Support the pod/site on Patreon! John Adams said that “because power corrupts, society’s demands for moral authority and character increase as the importance of the position increases.” Every headline in the past week has us thinking about abuse of power and the moral authority required to stand up to that abuse. In this week's show, we discuss the growing violence in Afghanistan and the terrible attacks in Kabul. We also ponder the motivations behind President Trump's solar tariffs. In our #metoo moment, we talk about the #HearHerHarvard movement at Harvard University and the criticism of Judge Aquilina and her decisions involving the Nassar trial. We also discuss the economic motivations behind the recent Russian protests and why economics always becomes our central concern. To compliment individuals who aren't members of our respective parties, Sarah praises Representative Will Hurd and his bipartisan immigration bill. Beth shares the encouraging reactions of several Arizona state legislators in the face of ugly immigration protests. For our main segment, we discuss the moral authority and the arguments surrounding the presidencies of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Beth shares her journey with John McCain as a presidential candidate and we ponder the growing disgust among the moderate middle at the current state of politics in our country. We end with a discussion on what's on our minds outside politics - specifically when we sleep - as Beth shares a common dream she has and Sarah worries about the epidemic of teeth clenching among Americans.
