Inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010, the four-time “National Coach of the Year” was also named “West Region Coach” of the Year and Pac 12 “Coach of the Century” for her solid track record as a preeminent coach. Affectionately known by her gymnasts as “Miss Val,” her reputation is only one reason that 46 former US national team members came through her program and why half of the last two Olympic teams committed to UCLA. Valorie's coaching success can be attributed to her extraordinary leadership and mentorship of young student-athletes, and the way in which she used gymnastics as an avenue through which to teach valuable life lessons, while encouraging individuality and joy. Something Valorie learned from the late John Wooden, the legendary and most successful collegiate basketball coach of all time, who was one of her biggest inspirations, as well as a close mentor and friend. Valorie began her career as a professional ballet dancer and choreographer for the Washington, DC and Sacramento Ballet Companies. Although never a gymnast herself, she's transferred to her student-athletes all she learned in the world of classical dance. The result of which resulted in nearly three decades of coaching one of the premiere athletic programs in any sport, mentoring hundreds of elite athletes, including Olympic champions Jordan Wieber, Kyla Ross and Madison Kocian, among others. Also known as the nation's foremost gymnastics choreographer, Miss Val'smany credits include choreographing and directing a myriad of live variety shows, such as the NCAA Opening Ceremonies for Women's Basketball, a flash mob of famed female athletes and coaches at the inaugural Aurora Games, a Kareem Abdul-Jabbar roast, CBS's “Jump, Jive & Thrive” Breast Cancer Research Foundation benefit, and 26 years of cirque-type shows for SeaWorld's Summer Nights and the San Diego Zoo. Current projects include additional live stage shows, TV specials, events and the development of a theatrical musical, plus the highly anticipated post-Olympic “Gold Over America Tour” featuring an all-star team of female gymnastics champions, headlined by Simone Biles and also featuring Olympian Jordan Chiles and viral sensation, Katelyn Ohashi, which will begin in Fall 2021 and is slated to visit more than 35 U.S. cities, celebrating powerful female athletes in a high-octane, fun-filled experience. She is a dynamic and charismatic speaker with an extensive schedule of“Corporate Coaching” events for national companies including JP Morgan Chase, General Electric, Gucci, AT&T and Jackson National Life Insurance, and has contributed to various panel discussions including Bustle's “Rule Breakers” and the ESPNW Summit. In her TEDWomen 2019 talk, Miss Val inspires people to reevaluate their definition of success. She maintains that real success is developing champions in life, and that in order to motivate success, we need to inspire those whom we lead without compromising the human spirit. As a recent breast cancer survivor, Valorie's positive outlook and hope-filled message is impactful. She empowered her athletes to use their voices, to celebrate themselves, and to enjoy the elite sport that has damaged so many in the past. She also shared her motivating and inspirational messages with the world, with her book, “LIFE IS SHORT, DON'T WAIT TO DANCE: Advice and Inspiration from the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame Coach of 7 NCAA Championship Teams,” which was released in Fall 2018 by the Hachette Book Group. It expounds on her life philosophy: “Don't wait to see what life is going to hand you, take control of your life and design ~ choreograph it exactly how you want it to turn out.” For more information go to www.marcyllecombs.com

“When you rearrange the letters in ‘listen’ it spells ‘silent.’ In order to truly listen, we have to silence our brains and stop trying to be right and figuring out how to respond. Just shut up and listen to our children.” In this episode, I sat down with Valorie Kondos Field to chat about her coaching history, philosophy, and approach. As coaches, we should always be learning no matter how much experience we have and this episode will provide a wonderful opportunity to learn from one of the best of all time; regardless of sport. Miss Val has a unique and valuable coaching story and philosophy that offers incredible value to those who are open to learning from it. Listen in as we talk about coaching, why we should re-define what success looks like, what the true role of a coach is, and why it’s so important to instill joy in others. Some takeaways and questions we think about: Infuse Joy Would you coach differently if nothing was attached to winning? We should never stop learning how to better support our youth. Learning how to compete is a skill. Don’t coach from your ego! Focus 90% at least on the mental health and wellbeing of their players.

Life is Short, Don’t Wait to Dance: Inspiration from an UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame Coach SHOW GUEST: Valorie Kondos Field How did a professional ballerina become one of the winningest coaches in NCAA history? Valorie Kondos Field-or Miss Val as she's affectionately known-has never even tumbled, flipped, or ever played any type of organized sports and yet she has been able to craft a legendary coaching career through curiosity, creativity, intention to detail, and unwavering care for the overall well-being of her athletes. For Miss Val, it's not about the X's and O's, it's about choreographing your life and owning the choices you make. Miss Val has shaped her UCLA Gymnastics program as a life skills class, and now she's sharing those same lessons with readers who want to own their destiny. For Miss Val, it’s not about winning and losing, it’s about choreographing your life and owning the choices you make. Her philosophies are timeless. Her coaching style is unorthodox.

In Part 1 of this Podcast Special we have Head Coach of UCLA Gymnastics and orchestrator of THAT viral gymnastics' routine by Katelyn Ohashi, Miss Val Kondos Field. Miss Val and I discussed; how she was a ballerina originally but transitioned into coaching in gymnastics, the culture of gymnastics in the United States and how it has gone rotten, we unpacked her philosophies that have been galvanised by real life experiences such as her battle with cancer, her book "Life is Short Don't Wait To Dance" and of course we spoke about Katelyn Ohashi's unbelievable routine. Next week, Katelyn herself will join us on the podcast. Miss Val had a long and successful career in ballet. She studied classical ballet and piano for 17 years. Her first transition into gymnastics came by first becoming hired to play piano for floor routines before moving into coaching. Miss Val sees her job much more as a life skills coach, a mentor than a coach. Coaching is all about motivating change, not dictating change. Coaching from the ego takes the joy out of learning. Miss Val explains her philosophy, her faith and values and how she believes gymnastics teaches discipline like no other sport. Using success in sport as a platform to spread a message with impact. Example of the voice that Michael Phelps has now in spreading message about depression. Miss Val discusses the role of her parents and in particular being brought up without a fear of failure, how this now influences her coaching style and successes. Initially Miss Val quickly made some lessons in coaching after some mistakes and losses. The importance of a shared philosophical base with her athletes and fellow staff. One of Miss Val's lessons in leadership is to surround yourself with people that you trust, rid your ego and when the time is right, allow your team to act and take charge with freedom. Gymnastics is in recovery and Miss Val states the need to educate coaches and parents Miss Val speaks of the abuse cases in US gymnastics and offers some of the issues within the US culture and systems. Miss Val's reports that UCLA alumni all reported that they are stripped of a voice, made into robots and verbally and physically abused. "The after" - athletes report that after you are no longer able to win medals and money, you are forgotten about and no longer valued as people or as athletes. Miss Val discusses the conversations she has had with senior figures in changing American culture, not just sport and gymnastics. Active listening, high performance habits and getting out of the desert so that you can better serve other people. Gratitude is a critical component to UCLA's gymnastic success and is engrained into their daily practice. Life is an adventure that requires you to learn, adapt and move fast Miss Val shares with us the moment she was told she had an aggressive form of breast cancer. Miss Val shares her insanely positive and infectious outlook on being diagnosed with cancer and of her trips to the chemo spa! Val describes how she used time at chemo spa to plan for her next ventures including her book "Life is Short Don't Wait To Dance". Miss Val tries to bring out childlike qualities in her athletes and their routines, first, by helping them find their unique voice. The best performers are joyful, spontaneous and loving in what they do. Steve and Miss Val discuss Katelyn Ohashi's phenomenal routine that recently went viral Katelyn's evolution into the woman embodies her journey and pays tribute to significant influences. Miss Val shares why she believes Katelyn's routine has gone viral. What is next for Miss Val? Life Is Short, Don't Wait to Dance: Advice and Inspiration from the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame Coach of 7 NCAA Championship Teams with Valorie Kondos Field How did a professional ballerina become one of the winningest coaches in NCAA history? Valorie Kondos Field-or Miss Val as she's affectionately known-has never even tumbled, flipped, or ever played any type of organized sports and yet she has been able to craft a legendary coaching career through curiosity, creativity, intention to detail, and unwavering care for the overall well-being of her athletes. For Miss Val, it's not about the X's and O's, it's about choreographing your life and owning the choices you make. Miss Val reveals how her head coaching journey started off disastrously, spending years mimicking other top coaches while her team suffered because of her lack of authenticity. In time she realized being a gymnastics immigrant wasn't a detriment, it was a gift. When she embraced and honed her own uniqueness Miss Val led her Bruins to six NCAA Championships and became one of only two active coaches to ever be inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2016 Miss Val was named Pac-12 "Gymnastics Coach of the Century." THIS WEEK'S INTERVIEW Mary Lee Tracy (MLT) has coached two Olympic gold medalists (four Olympians total) and has had over 25 national team members. Mary Lee was recently hired as USA Gymnastics Developmental Coordinator, only to be asked to resign after survivor backlash and "contacting a survivor." She was joined by Valorie Kondos-Field (Miss Val), UCLA head coach and advocate for culture change at USAG. This interview was conducted on September 9th 2018. We discuss: Criticism of MLT's coaching methods, including: nutrition, weigh-ins, injuries and tone-deaf social media posts. What both coaches have done wrong in the past and understanding victim shaming. Her thoughts on Marta Karolyi and the culture at the Ranch. Her defense of Nassar interview. If she ever stood up to Martha Karolyi or asked for changes at the Ranch. Her social media posts and comments, including Kelli Hill's response to Aly Raisman on our Facebook page. What she has learned from talking to survivor, Amanda Jetter. Prevention of grooming behavior and why banned coach, Steve Elliot, was fired from her gym. And some fun stuff about artistry, like Martha vetoing Lexi Priessman's floor routines over and over. Valorie Kondos Field, or "Miss Val" as she's affectionately known, is the longtime head coach of the UCLA Women's Gymnastics Team with seven NCAA National Championships. Valorie has been named the PAC-12 Gymnastics Coach of the Century and is a member of the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, she has a unique coaching style with a focus on joy, gratitude and choices. She says a breast cancer diagnosis in 2014 led her to an epiphany: "Be anxious for nothing and grateful for all things." Valorie joined me on Olympic & Bundy to talk about her ballerina background, what led her to coaching gymnastics at UCLA, her coaching philosophy, the culture of gymnastics amid the Larry Nassar trial and conviction, empowering athletes to use their voices, how her breast cancer diagnosis and treatment changed her -- and a lot more. This week’s conversation is with Valorie Kondos Field, often referred to as “Miss Val.”She’s the head coach of the six-time NCAA Champion, 21 NCAA Regional Champion and 17-time PAC 12 Champion UCLA Women’s Gymnastics team.Valorie was recently named the Pac-12 “Coach of the Century,” and in 2010, she became one of only two active coaches to be inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame. She considers the late John Wooden, the legendary and most successful collegiate basketball coach of all time, as one of her inspirations, and closest mentor and friend.Countless student-athletes praise Valorie for her guidance during their athletic careers, and after they’ve graduated from UCLA and have entered the next chapter in their lives. Included in the hundreds of athletes she has coached or mentored are Olympic champions Simone Biles, Jordan Wieber, Kyla Ross, Madison Kocian, Laurie Hernandez and Nastia Liukin. For Valorie, life is a grand adventure that all comes down to choices. The moment she found out she had breast cancer is a prime example of the way she chooses to live her life.In essence, she became grateful that her form of cancer was treatable. Grateful that she could go get chemotherapy for it and she’s continued to live her life that way ever since. In this conversation, we discuss why she doesn’t believe in failure, why being a pessimist is the easy way out, and why gratitude is the most important habit to train.Valerie has an infectious personality and this incredible mindset that, “I get to…” rather than “I have to…” and I think it’s something we can all apply to our own lives.I think you’re really going to love learning from her. This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens.Receive a free 20-count travel pack of Athletic Greens (valued at $99) with any purchase!Claim here: athleticgreens.com/findingmasterySupport for Finding Mastery also brought to you by Health IQ:Health IQ uses science & data to secure lower rates on life insurance for health conscious people including runners, cyclists, strength trainers, vegans, and more.Learn more and get a free quote at healthiq.com/findingmastery
