Much of Justin Cross' attitude toward health and wellness came from his time in the Navy — and it's not necessarily the impact you'd expect. As team leader for weapons check systems on fighter jets, Justin saw the importance of maintaining his physical fitness and “always wanted to crush” his PT score. So, he did that. But he had a sailor's attitude toward playing hard, as well. “I like to take care of myself. I love to workout,” he says. “But at the same time — because you know what they say about sailors and cussing and drinking — you had to be able to hold your own. There's no shortage of beer and whiskey.” That's a balance, between working and playing, that's fed into his post-Navy attitude toward physical fitness and health. And it's also a cornerstone of Earn Your Booze, a company and community that Justin is founder and CEO of. A lot of folks have a misconception about fitness, he says, that in order to be healthy, you have to eat granola and lettuce all day. “Cheat meals” conjure up just as much guilt as they do pleasure, and a hard line is often taken on whether you deserve to enjoy yourself in general. It's a strict life, and one that Justin isn't about himself. Through his company, he helps people live lives of accomplishing their fitness goals while also taking care of themselves through the occasional, guilt-free night out. Everything, as they say, in moderation. On this episode of “The Liam Church Show,” Justin breaks down for Liam what striking that balance and getting the best of both looks like. What You'll Learn: Why Justin is a big believer in using the word “investment” over “sacrifice” when it comes to choices around your physical health How he recovered and pivoted from the impact of owning an events-based business during the pandemic What celebrating looks like in his life today, and how he helps others do the same And much more! Favorite Quote: “Having a life that's extremely strict, devoid of fun and devoid of any rewards is an unhealthy life.” — Justin Cross Connect with Justin - HERE Connect with Liam: Facebook

Earn Your Booze's Founder and CEO Justin Cross explains the Earn Your Booze mindset on the launch of the podcast. Justin embraces the Earn It mindset. This is a mindset he started learning while serving in the US Navy on an aircraft carrier. Coincidentally, EYB's founder also learned how to drink like a sailor while serving in the Navy. Join us as Justin walks us through the journey of his Navy career, working at Lockheed, getting into brewing and eventually creating Earn Your Booze. CAUTION: This podcast contains some adult language.
Justin Cross is co-founder and CEO at Earn Your Booze. He and Elliott Clark, who runs Instagram account @apartment_bartender, joined forces in 2017 to create the company that aims to bridge the gap between the fitness and drinks industries. Last year, they ran over 40 events in conjunction with big liquor brands to promote a healthier lifestyle among bartenders and other industry workers. At their activations, all 150+ participants complete a workout before an after party at which the drinks have all been 'earned' through hard work. Then, we chat renowned Toronto bar manager Ana Wolkowski who can be found behind the stick at Bar Raval. Ana grew up in her Dad's bar and is a an expert on all things Sherry.
What's up Brew Trails fans! This episode is a little more on the "Trails" side. I venture into The Canyon with a PBJ Time Crowler in tow and attempt to snag two summits on the Eastern side of GCNP. This is not something that I recommend people do as it require a lot of knowledge about off-trail orientation, emergency supplies, and technical climbing skills. On the way, I relied heavily on Kahtoola micro-spikes, a local Flagstaff business, as well as give some shout outs to SMR Outdoor gear and Justin Cross of Earn Your Booze! I hope you enjoy this fun little adventure episode! - N

Justin Cross is a great episode to the podcast. We are following him on his journey to opening up his own brewery here in Arizona in a mini-series called "Somethings Brewing" (listen to part 1 and part 2 so far). As much as Justin is passionate about beer he is possibly equally as passionate about fitness. So Justin did what many before him did. He thought "Hmmm. Fitness and beer. They go together like.....well, fitness and beer". When he first presented his theory to me I thought "This poor fellas needs to tighten up his technique on skull crushers and not take it so literally". But then he explained it. And it made sense. You don't have to choose one or the other. You can really have both. Its all about balance. Another guy with the same idea and Justin's good friend Elliott aka Apartment Bartender together came up with the idea of Earn Your Booze, a philosophy about having that balance and making sure you earn those drinks by kicking butt by getting some sort of exercise in. This concept has caught fire and finds the guys shipping t-shirts across the world. And now, they have their first event coming up this Saturday November 4th at Scottsdale Beer Company. The event is going to be a prime example of earning your booze. Rush Club is going to be putting on an awesome workout and competitions while The Viking from Peak Nutrition is going to be laying down some knowledge on how to make good choices while still enjoying yourself when out for some drinks. And you can even get a tour of the brewery and enjoy one of their many awesome beers. And we will be there as well. Aaron will be shooting video and Eric will be participating in the workout. For about 4 minutes. Before throwing up and passing out. It's gonna be awesome. Through my journey of visiting and talking with some of my favorite breweries across the state of Arizona I have learned many things: I actually DO like sour beers I can drink about 12 tasters and 1 pint during a podcast interview I should NOT drink about 12 tasters and 1 pint during a podcast interview And finally, opening up a brewery is HARD WORK! If you are lucky enough to see them in action while you are visiting you can easily see that these guys and girls are busting their butts while at the same time sweating their butts off in their effort to make you the best damn beer you've ever tasted. But making beer is only a small portion of that. First you have to choose a name. Easy enough, right? Not so much. Just ask Steve McFate. Once you have a name then you have to either build or redesign your space to accommodate a commercial brewery. And many of these people are doing the work all themselves. So after working a normal shift at their regular job they are spending hours afterwards putting in the blood and sweat to literally build their dream (listen to the Crooked Tooth episode to hear Ben Vernon talk about this). The list goes on an on. And THEN you get to opening day which in actually when the REAL work begins: staying open and successful. Through this show is have developed the utmost respect for the dudes and dudettes who work so hard to play their part in what I consider one of the coolest sections of society: the craft beer world. With that said I developed this idea to interview someone through their path toward opening a brewery so that listeners can get an idea of how the whole process works and help this aspiring brewery owner gain a following so that anticipation build and opening day brings a lot of excitement. Enter Justin Cross. The Man of Many Projects. Fitness Beast. Home Brew Wizard. I initially connected with Justin via his Instagram @the_alpha_ale. Justin allows his followers to see very step of his process and is great at explaining the whole process simply so that anyone can understand. and he makes amazing beer. After hanging out with Justin a few times in the real world I realized that this dude is determined and is working his butt off to make his dream happen. And he is doing it the right way: by being a good person and work to improve the lives of others. Through this miniseries we are going to follow Justin on his journey toward opening up his brewery. In Part 1 we are going to get a little back history with his experience in the brewing world as well as the "why" behind what he is doing.
