Angus & Graham discuss all aspects of calorie consumption vs calorie expenditure. Watching overweight people running to try and lose weight is so dispiriting. It won't work and may just end up injuring them and cause long term démotivation. A much more successful process would be a proper study of their current diet and making small tweaks that could have an outsized impact. They can then start to slowly exercise.

In today's episode we review research that explores how many calories we can really burn in a day. We discuss the constrained energy theory suggesting your body will regulate how many calories it will burn based on how much you eat and how much you move. You'll realize we cannot just continue to move more and more every day and burn more and more every day. At some point your body will force you to take a break and rest, or it will break down. ------------ WEBSITES ----------- https://johnbarban.com https://bradpilon.com Total T Clinic https://eatstopeat.com https://www.ultalabtests.com

I know how hard it is to untangle exercise from body image goals, but here I share how I have managed to do that, finding and ALLOWING myself to choose movement that I enjoy.I share my top tips on how you can bring in more joyful movement into your life, breaking free from the clutches of fitness culture.I recorded this after going for an impromptu evening run, which had filled me with so much joy because this movement wasn't planned or part of a fitness programme that I ‘had' to do; it was totally intuitive and was what my body was craving. Moving in this way brings such a deeper connection to our bodies, and brings in much more freedom and joy.Related Episodes (Not even an exhaustive list! We all know that weight loss requires a lot of hard work. However, several studies have shown that if we change some of our habits we can actually lose those pounds without too much effort. For example, when you're in the shower, sing a song or two. A 10-minute-long concert will help you drop around 20 calories depending on how much you weigh. Or did you know that your metabolism loves a good joke and starts working more intensively? Plus, it works out different muscles, tones your tummy and boosts your immune system! If you don't get enough good sleep, your metabolism slows down and your appetite grows strong. The exact number of calories you burn while sleeping depends on your weight and age. But taking care of your sleep quality is good for everyone. So buy yourself a better mattress, put away all your gadgets before bed, and stick to a healthy sleeping schedule! And a relaxing hot bath is just as good for losing weight as a 30-minute walk. But there are other ways to lose excess fat. We invite you to try these cool tricks to lose weight naturally. Experience the cheat code to weight loss with a 7-exercise challenge - just bike, swim, dance, jump rope, climb stairs, hike, and walk! In this episode, I highlighted seven exercises that can be used to burn calories and lose weight: biking, swimming, dancing, jumping rope, climbing stairs, hiking, and walking. Biking can burn between 400 to 600 calories an hour, swimming 600 to 800 calories an hour, dancing 300 to 400 calories an hour, jumping rope 1800 to 1000 calories an hour, climbing stairs 300 to 400 calories an hour and hiking 300 to 500 calories an hour. Walking is the most accessible and can burn around 200 calories an hour. With a 200 calorie deficit per day in addition to one of these exercises, you can lose a pound of fat in a week "Walk for an hour a day, 200 calorie deficit. On average, you'll be at about a pound of fat loss per week. You didn't even lift weights. You didn't change much. If anything, you helped yourself because now you're getting more exercise." In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. Did you know that biking can burn up to 600 calories an hour? 2. Did you know that swimming can burn up to 800 calories an hour? 3. Did you know that jumping rope can burn up to 1000 calories an hour? Today, I am blessed to have for a THIRD time, Dr. Don Clum. He graduated from Life University in Marietta, GA in 1997 with a degree in Human Nutrition. He then moved to Life Chiropractic College West in California, where he graduated with his Doctorate of Chiropractic in 2000. This originally aired in July 2021. After graduation, Dr. Clum moved to San Jose, Costa Rica where he was invited to work with the Costa Rican Olympic Committee and Athletes. Dr. Clum participated in the National, Central American and Caribbean and Central American Games as the team chiropractor and as the official chiropractor for two professional soccer teams. As a frequent guest on National Television and Radio, Dr. Clum was influential in bringing the gift of holistic health care to the people of Central America and worked with the government programs, instituting W.H.O. procedures and working directly with the indigenous populations of Costa Rica. He was sought after as a speaker and has presented to various professional sports teams, universities, medical groups, medical and chiropractic schools, businesses and government agencies. Dr. Clum was instrumental in forming the first Colegio or “Board” and enacting the first legislation recognizing chiropractic as a licensed and legal healing profession in Costa Rica. In this episode, Dr. Clum opens the show by revealing why the 'calories in, calories out' method of eating is bogus. Plus, he tells us how glycogen works and the reason that too many people oversimplify it. Dr. Clum explains why people who burn more calories are happier, and he gives an overview of the blood markers you should use to measure insulin health. Tune in as we chat about the problem with snacking, how to know if you're fasting too much, and we dig deep into adrenals, insulin, and cortisol. Humans are dynamic open systems. First of all, the accuracy for calories is fundamentally off. There's automatically up to a 25% error rate for calories. Plus, our body will process calories differently depending on what they are. Sugars will be released into your body differently depending on your gut bacteria. [07:30] The Glycogen Concept Is Flawed – We Oversimplify It We never tap out our glycogen. You don't have to reduce glycogen by a significant amount if you're metabolically flexible. The glycogen in our liver is there for our body. Glycogen appears to be pretty steady no matter what you do. You don't have to deplete all your glycogen to go into fat burning. [17:30] People Who Burn More Calories Are Happier People who burn more calories are happier because of different hormonal states. Your body will interpret nutrients in your gut. Food is not fuel – it's information. Your body doesn't handle processed food very well, even protein powders. [24:10] Blood Markers You Can Use To Monitor Insulin Health You can do serum insulin, which is fasting insulin. You want that number as low as possible. This number should be around 2 or 3. When you eat, that number can blow up to seven times. If you start at 20, then you'll go up to 140. If you keep doing that each day, then you have a problem. Most Americans eat in a fifteen-hour window – they are eating from the time they wake up to the time they go to bed. [26:05] Why Snacking Could Be Damaging Your Health Snacking causes a lot of issues. People are snacking between 19 and 23 times a day. If you are constantly digesting, then you aren't recycling. When your body is resting, then it is in autophagy. So, your cells will start to work better. Autophagy allows new cells to come in and replace cells that have died. [31:40] Signs You Could Be Fasting Too Often Clum teaches progressive fasting rotations. Growth will start to kick in after a fast. You could lose 97% of your new cells if you don't end a fast in the right way. It is rare that you lose lean body muscle from fasting. You have to have a body fat percentage of 5% or less to tap into muscle during a fast. [34:10] Does It Matter What Foods You Break A Fast With? What breaks the fast depends on why you're doing the fast. The food you eat will matter up to two weeks after you fast. Eat foods that are insulin friendly. Plus, exercise is a key component of repairing your cells. [50:45] Quitting Junk Food Causes Withdrawals Like Drug Addiction When an addict stops drinking, they will be lightheaded, irritable, feel terrible, shake, and sweat. When some people skip a meal, they feel the exact same way. Food fuels the addiction pathway. In fact, food is more addictive than drugs. Food hits dopamine and serotonin. Every time insulin gets shot out, so does serotonin. [55:30] Dr. Clum Does Not Encourage C-Peptide Level Testing If triglycerides are over 100, there's an insulin issue. Over 150 is a metabolic syndrome marker. Insulin resistance is inversely related to vitamin D. If your vitamin D is low, you have insulin resistance. Insulin will hold down vitamin D. [60:10] The Relationship Between Adrenals, Insulin, and Cortisol We beat up the adrenals a lot as the culprit for fatigue and adrenal fatigue. However, only a third of the cortisol is actually made in the adrenal. The brain makes a third of the cortisol because it is highly sensitive to inflammation. It makes cortisol to keep inflammation levels as low as possible. When you burn fat, it's an inflammatory process. We will recycle about 1.3% of our cells a day. What matters is how efficient you are in the process. [73:45] An Overweight Diabetic Only Has To Lose One Gram For an overweight type two data to become a normal person, how much weight do they have to lose? People think it's 10% of their body weight. However, the answer is one gram. The gram has to come out of the pancreas. If a 350 lb. person loses one gram from the pancreas, they will no longer be a diabetic. AND MUCH MORE! In this micro episode, I discuss the thermic effect of food and how it can play a small role in helping you reach your weight loss goals! The thermic effect of food is the amount of energy expended during digestion. It's also known as diet-induced thermogenesis or metabolic heat production. It's an important part of overall energy expenditure and can contribute up to 10% of total daily caloric expenditure for adults. Certain types of foods require more energy to be broken down than others. The 3 macronutrients have different effects on your metabolic rate. When expressed as a percent of the energy content of the nutrient, the thermic effect of fat is 2%, carbohydrates are 8%, & protein is a whopping 25%!This is one of the reasons why I believe that it's difficult to overconsume protein as compared to carbohydrates & fat. By prioritizing protein in your meals throughout the day, you can increase your calorie burn from TEF and optimize your progress towards your desired weight goal. People have been trying for ages to make sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day healthier. Sitting on a ball, treadmill desks, standing desks, and more. We burn 2,000 calories a day. And if we exercise and cut carbs, we'll lose more weight. Right? Wrong. In this paradigm-shifting book Burn, Dr. Herman Pontzer reveals for the first time how human metabolism really works so that we can finally manage our weight and improve our health.Pontzer's groundbreaking studies with hunter-gatherer tribes show how exercise doesn't increase our metabolism. Instead, we burn calories within a very narrow range: nearly 3,000 calories per day, no matter our activity level. Hunter-gatherers like the Hadza move about five hours a day and remain remarkably healthy into old age. But elite athletes can push the body too far, burning calories faster than their bodies can take them in. It may be that the most spectacular athletic feats are the result not just of great training, but of an astonishingly efficient digestive system.Dr. Herman Pontzer joins Dr. Pam today to talk about this research. He is an Associate Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology at Duke University and an Associate Research Professor of Global Health at the Duke Global Health Institute, as well as an internationally recognized researcher in human energetics and evolution.
