On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, it's Halloween, and as we have done in the past for Halloween and Christmas, we like to put out a bit of a compilation of favorite topics or interviews from years past that celebrate these specific holidays. And this one has a very special anniversary episode, actually TWO of them. First up: we return to one of our favorite segments as we decide, once-and-for-all, what the is the BEST! Could it be The Exorcist, or possibly Poltergeist? Could A Nightmare on Elm Street out-slash The Blair Witch Project? Is Paranormal Activity more ghastly (and ghostly) than The Ring? Do exploding stomachs out-scare the horrific haunting that takes place in The Conjuring? Find out the winner with our Scariest Movie Battle Royale! Then, it is time to prep for All Hallows' Eve as we take to our own respective graveyards and dig up obscure Halloween movies. Trick r Treat has taken off in recent years, and there are many little unspoken gems like this one to get us all hyped up for the best movie season of the year for horror fans! Take a listen, and rest assured to walk away with at least a few new Halloween gems to watch this season of the witch. Next, it is the 25th anniversary of The Blair Witch Project this year. If you find a list of the greatest horror films, you'll find this now classic on that list. $250 million made worldwide, popularizing an entire genre and inspiring countless filmmakers across the globe, and even earned a Guinness world record for top budget to box office ratio – Blair Witch has earned the title of classic. And for the film's 25th anniversary, we wanted to sit down and discuss the film and its legacy with one of the filmmakers directly responsible for it, Eduardo Sánchez. Finally, it is the 10th anniversary of our special podcast episode on Women In Horror. Justin Macumber and Aaron Peterson are joined by guests (at the time) Amanda and Eliyanna to discuss how women in films, specifically horror films, have evolved throughout the years. From the early days of the black and white classics, such as Psycho, to the ‘Final Girl' and revenge fantasy films of the 70's, all the way to modern times with Scream, Buffy, and others: The entire history of women in horror films is open for debate. This is a detailed, lively, and entertaining discussion you do NOT want to miss! Discussed on this episode (00:00 – 1:07:59) Scariest Movie Ever (1:08:00 – 1:52:25) Obscure Halloween / Horror Movies (1:52:26 – 2:39:49) Interview with The Blair Witch Project director Eduardo Sánchez (2:39:50 – 4:51:50) Women in Horror Listen to our other podcast, Inspired By A True Story, now available in your favorite podcast feed! As we take the week off, here are four of our most popular topics on our final Best of 2018 compilation: Behind-the-Scenes Hollywood Stories, Pixar Movie Battle Royale, Is Television Getting TOO Serialized, and Let's Puppet Up A Movie. As well as a short collection of outtakes from our January special on former host, Justin Macumber. First up, from Episode 317: Hollywood has been inundated with scandal and sadness for the last long while, therefore on this segment, we’re bringing forth the joy! We are going to share some of our favorite stories we’ve found revolving around Hollywood. Possibly a celebrity doing something for a child, a fascinating story behind a production, or a celebrity’s personal triumph. This is about sharing some favorite Hollywood behind-the-scenes stories! Next, we head to Episode 323: When 24 hit the air many years ago, it was an eye-opener in terms of what television could do. For 24 consecutive episodes, this series told one single day’s worth of story. Each episode leading directly into the next, leaving little chance to jump into the show mid-season and have any idea what was going on. Flash forward to 2018, and it seems like EVERY show is doing this. Unless you’re a slave to CBS, television is dominated by the season-long arc. Some even take it a step further – like Breaking Bad or Walking Dead – and make the entire series one singular story. Has it gotten to be too much, though? Have we finally arrived at the breaking point? Is television getting TOO serialized? Next, we head to Episode 315: In 1995, Pixar released their first feature-length film, the computer animated classic Toy Story. Soon after, A Bug’s Life and Toy Story 2 released in quick succession, with titles continuing to drop annually. The studio revolutionized animation for the modern generation, and in 2006 was purchased by the previous dominator in this arena: Disney. Over the past 20-plus years, Pixar has racked up billions in box office receipts, and even more in memories for movie fans. On this segment, our four hosts pick our two favorite Pixar classics, and break down what is the greatest Pixar film in history! Finally, we come to Episode 324: What is the deal with puppets? Are we running out of human actors? Then why do we enjoy puppets so much? On this segment, we discuss the world of puppets, if we prefer the humorous or horrific brand, and most importantly: what movies would instantly improve with the addition of puppets? [divider style="solid" top="20" bottom="20"] Discussed on this episode of The Hollywood Outsider Movie and TV Podcast: (0:00 – 35:59) Opening | Episode 317: Favorite Behind-the-Scenes Hollywood Stories (36:00 – 57:59) Episode 323: Is Television Getting Too Serialized? Remake This Movie RIGHT!

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 14, 2018 62:33

Remake This Movie RIGHT began as a tiny nugget of fun on The Hollywood Outsider Podcast, where we would randomly recast popular classic films with updated actors, just to see who could come up with the craziest scenario. That grew into an idea I wanted to explore: what if, using the podcast medium, we had a show that celebrated both the good and the bad of any given film, and then instead of the hosts just bashing everything for laughs, we instead applied that fan magic to creating the modern film that we would WANT to see. It seemed like a no-brainer, and by using various hosts instead of the same three every week, it also struck me as special. More importantly, it was original.  Therefore I created Remake This Movie RIGHT! I definitely didn’t come up with every idea on my own. I collaborated with close friends and fellow podcasters Troy Heinritz and Brian Williams on how to make the format the best it could be, which meant of course bringing in our own voice talent in Mr. Wayne Henderson – courtesy of MediaVoiceOvers.com, of course - to craft a parody movie trailer tying everything that came before it together in one neat bow. Rob Rowald assisted me as he always does with everything technical to improve our presence on the internets, and Dustin Baker worked that graphical witchcraft to “remake” the Hollywood Outsider logo as Remake’s. Last, but definitely not least, was the inspiration from my former co-host Justin Macumber, who was constantly an advocate for a new, fresher take on beloved properties. Everything came together, and while the majority of the idea and production fell to me, Remake This Movie RIGHT would not be where it is without the help and shoulder to lean of from those listed above.  And now, it is time to say goodbye. For the past 4 years, I have personally put so many hours of blood sweat and tears into this show, and I can honestly say, my heart is full from all of the great responses and wonderful moments that stem from this show. Deciding to end the show has never been about a lack of interest, it has solely landed on the amount of time it takes to do each episode properly. After I wrapped Season 3, I had honestly moved on and felt we ended so strongly, it’s better to go out on top. But the fans wouldn’t have it. Email after email, Facebook messages, tweets, the comments kept coming. So much that I finally decided to bring the show back for one final season, and give it the send-off it – and the listeners – truly deserve.    So here we are, at the end of the road. I’m left with bittersweet memories of so many great moments. We did a couple of live episodes with audiences shouting their ideas and forcing us to change course that really warmed my heart. Wesley Snipes, the one true Blade, dug our Blade episode. And, of course, we had S.S. Wilson come by several times, which always made me smile, and even to remake his own film, Short Circuit. What a fantastic story to be able to tell.  As I close the show, I want to personally thank every listener who supported the show. Without you, we wouldn’t have made it this far. Also, thank you to the numerous hosts who have dropped by over the years. Each and every one of you contributed in your own unique voice to the success of this show, and there have been so many wonderful ideas over the years that STILL deserve to be salvaged by Hollywood. I also want to thank my family, who have supported this endeavor and all of the time it has taken away from other events and memories along the way. Your strength is what gives me mine.  And lastly, thank you once again to Wayne Henderson, for everything he has done for this podcast since the beginning. I can honestly say, this podcast wouldn’t have been the same without his voice bringing it all together after each episode. He has always been willing to do whatever nonsense I came up with as a script, and has never complained or shied away. Wayne is the best in the biz, as they say. With that, this is your host, Aaron Peterson, saying goodbye and thank you to all of you Cinematic Architects. This has been a fantastic time in my life, and love to have shared it with each and every one of you. You can still find me talking about movies over at The Hollywood Outsider and creating stories with candid discussion on Smirk, but Remake has officially used its last reel of film. The final credits have rolled on this podcast, so remember that every film you love will get a reboot someday, and only you can Remake This Movie RIGHT!

This week, we decided to delay our previously scheduled format until next week, as a member of The Hollywood Outsider family has passed on. We did not feel it appropriate to air a normal show, given the circumstances, so instead Aaron and Scott sit down to share their thoughts on the loss of a founding member of the show. We conclude with a respectfully edited re-airing of Justin Macumber's farewell episode, and we encourage you to dive into his collection of books and articles. As you listen to this episode, several of our hosts also wanted to share their thoughts on Justin with his audience. You can find those below. John My experiences with Justin started as a listener of the Hollywood Outsider. He was the voice that I loved disagreeing with…but most often he made me crazy when I had to agree with him. His insights and appreciation for pop culture helped make the show what it is today. It was a pleasure and an honor to share the few episodes I could with him. A great wealth of knowledge has been lost, fare thee well Justin.   Brian My involvement with The Hollywood Outsider has afforded me countless unique experiences, laughs, and friendships over the years. One of those treasures was Justin Macumber. (My God, he would never let me forget that compliment lol). If there was one thing Justin and I were guaranteed to have a good time doing together, it was making Aaron frustrated. We would finish the pre-show greetings and sound checks. Everybody’s ready to get started. All’s quiet. Aaron would inhale and then… “UTINNI!!!” The Star Wars sound bite that would trip up Aaron’s focus enough to the point of having to do multiple retakes. It never quit being funny (even though Aaron would say otherwise). Justin’s cackling laughter always made it worth the cost of whatever eye rolling I could feel Aaron sending my way. His honest laughs were so infectious that you could not help but join in and I knew comedy gold was struck when I heard that loud laugh. Things weren’t always fun and games. There were heated moments for sure. There were times I would feel like FedEx-ing a throat punch to him. As with any family, you have your ups and downs. The Hollywood Outsiders are no different. But by the end of the night, there was usually a priceless and hilarious discussion that never seemed to get recorded. He was always in the middle of it – if not leading it. And a “goodnight” to everybody that sometimes included a “love you guys”. It’s hard to believe I write this having spent hundreds of hours with Justin, yet never even had lunch with him in person. That’s one of the interesting things about the time we live in. You can have a meaningful bond with someone you’ve never physically met. We got to see him chase his dream of being a published author. Consoled him as he worried about his wife’s own health scare. Shared Christmas gifts with one another. And now he’s gone. It’s not fair. We’ll never get to hear his squeaky chair; hear him softly sing “It’s Been Awhile” anytime that phrase was said; or introduce himself with his own theme music again. And that is a hole that’ll never be filled (that’s what she said *wink*). We love you. We miss you. Farewell, my friend.   Aaron Many years ago, we were putting together a podcast to talk about entertainment, and we needed a voice. Someone distinct, insightful, contemplative, occasionally combative, and passionate. Scott knew a fella who had already established himself in the podcast community with his show catering to writers, and his name was Justin Macumber. With Brian in the mix, we all clicked almost instantly, each of us taking swipes at each other’s tastes, and often Justin and I specifically would engage in heated debates that would ultimately end in no winner declared, but everyone listening laughing hysterically. Or ironically. One of those. The truth of the matter is, there were times we each probably wanted to lock each other in the LOST hatch, but more times than not, we were smiling and over it in minutes. We are both very passionate about the things we love, and as a person who loves a good debate, Justin was always a stellar sparring partner. Along the way, he also became a friend. He loved to tell me when I was wrong, and no topic was off limits. I recall once we even had a hefty argument over my parenting choices, which in hindsight was pretty hilarious because of how ridiculously inappropriate his advice was. At the same time, there were numerous instances where Justin and his “so left he’s leaning sideways” manner helped me see sides to a subject I never would have considered, had he not persisted in only that way he can. We ended up bonding over numerous interests, and we even did a few side projects together. Those efforts led directly to my friendships with Troy, Wayne, Darrell, and many others. Looking back, it’s amazing to think of the many branches a single relationship leads to. It all culminated in a trip to SXSW where we spent 5 days together watching movies and having a lifetime of experiences. Over the past two years, I have witnessed his hardships and struggles, and the impact they took on both his body and his unwavering soul. Even things he loved with every fiber of his being – Krista, Star Wars, Superman, his books – ceased being everyday topics of discussion. For a man so in love with dreams and the limitless possibilities in the stars, life’s harsh realities were taking a toll. I have been trying to put the words together to express what it means to lose a friend you have public discussions with every week, but too many of you already know. Over the past day, such an amazing arsenal of support in every corner of the internet has popped up, reminding those who knew him who he was, and those who didn’t what they missed. But unlike so many of our friends and family who have passed, Justin is not lost to the ether. He has left an indelible mark on his community of fans in numerous forms. Between his work on Dead Robots Society and The Hollywood Outsider, his passionate voice can live on. With his many published books, his vision, words, and artistic drive can live on. And with the family, friends, and fans he has left behind, his memory will live on. Even though he doesn’t believe in an afterlife, I pray there is one. So he can look down and see all of this praise, because you know he would absolutely love it. I also want him to read this and know that I was so looking forward to him healing and coming back for another episode, debating with vigor those things we each love. I will miss having that sparring partner. But mostly, I want him to see that I finally used his stupid Oxford comma in this post reasonably, often, and appropriately. As you would always tell me, Justin: For that, you are welcome.
