Her survivor's story began in 2006, when she survived a horrific sexual assault in her college apartment. On the pilot episode of Survivor's Guide to True Crime, Kimberly and Kara introduce themselves and the intentions which lead to the creation of the podcast.  Kara Robinson Chamberlain is a public speaker and survivor advocate. In 2002, at 15 years old, Kara was kidnapped by and escaped from what she would later find out to be a serial killer. Kara's will to survive led to her escaping her captor and gathering information to identify her captor as the man responsible for at least three murders years earlier in Virginia. Following her experience, Kara formed relationships with law enforcement and went on to work with Richland County Sheriff's Department as a school resource officer, investigator, and victim's advocate until the birth of her first child in 2013. Kara now uses her experiences to speak to groups with the mission of spreading awareness, education, and inspiration.  Learn more from Kara: https://www.kararobinsonchamberlain.com Kara's CTA: Tune in to 'The Girl Who Escaped: The Kara Robinson Story' airing on Lifetime February 11th, 2023 at 8 PM EST. In 2002, when Kara Robinson Chamberlain was just 15 years old, she was in the front yard of her friend's home in Columbia, South Carolina when a man approached her. At first, he seemed friendly but then he pulled out a gun, pressed it against her neck, and forced Kara into a storage bin in the back of his vehicle. Kara was held and assaulted for 18 hours before she escaped. Through the information she was able to provide to law enforcement, they discovered that the man who took her was Richard Evonitz. He wasn't just a kidnapper and a pedophile; he was a serial killer. Before taking Kara, he'd killed 3 other girls from the state of Virginia- 16-year-old Sofia Silva in 1996, and sisters 15 year old Kristin Lisk and 12 year old Kati Lisk in 1997. At 15 years old, Kara Robinson Chamberlain not only heroically escaped her captor, but she also helped police catch a serial killer before he could kill again. Her story is nothing short of incredible. But it's not my story to tell. So, I invited Kara on the podcast to tell her story in her own words. In addition to discussing what happened back in 2002, Kara and I discuss her experience with the media, how we really feel about the term closure, and ethics in true crime, specifically as it relates to consent in telling stories of survival like Kara's. During our discussion, Rabbi Zippel shows survivors of child sexual abuse how they can overcome their ordeal through support, love, and acceptance. Avremi's childhood growing up in an orthodox Jewish family where he was homeschooled. How his caretaker, who entered his life as a close family friend, ultimately altered it forever. Avremi discusses the moment watching Law and Order in his early twenties when he realized he had suffered child sexual abuse. Why he felt self-blame for the abuse and decided to keep it a secret from his family and wife. How burying it ultimately had devastating effects on his life. Why going through talk therapy opened allowed him to start to heal from his past. We then turn to the healing journey he has been on. Why he chose to report the incident to the police. We discuss the eventual trial and its ultimate verdict. We examine how his life has changed following the verdict and his advice to others on how to overcome abuse and trauma. And so much more. What I Discuss With Dr. Kara Fitzgerald About How You Reverse Your Biological Age Through Lifestyle and Diet Choices Dr. Fitzgerald and I discuss how there is a link between aging and chronic disease, and it has everything to do with epigenetics and their effect on aging. Biological age looks at specific patterns of a key epigenetic mark called DNA methylation. These DNA methylation patterns can reliably predict how fast our body is aging. Methylation is as essential to our bodies as breathing and is happening in our bodies and within our cells all of the time. Therefore, if you can give yourself the DNA methylations of a younger you, you can reset your biological aging process. She provides key ways to do this throughout our interview that are based on her years of experience backed by clinical trials.  Why do most adults spend the last 16 years of their lives suffering from chronic conditions and taking multiple medications? Why reversing biological age is key. Why it's epigenetics and not your genetics that determines your level of health and age How is epigenetic expression greatly influenced by DNA methylation? How do our diet and lifestyle choices impact DNA methylation? The results of her research and a groundbreaking clinical trial showed a reduction of biological age by three years. Why it is our daily choices and routines that add years to your life or reduce them Her diet and lifestyle program which increases healthspan and reduces your biological age. And so much more. Kara Robinson Chamberlain was kidnapped by a serial killer at the age of 15, while standing in her friend's front yard. She was held captive and assaulted for 18 hours, but then Kara made a courageous escape while her captor was asleep. Kara had memorized numerous things about her captor and the apartment that she was held captive in and was able to lead law enforcement straight to her captor. He committed suicide when police caught up to him, but the information that Kara provided - led police to solve at least three other unsolved homicides and identify him as the man responsible for the murders. Following the identification and death of her captor, Kara went on to form relationships with law enforcement and she went on to work with the agency that investigated her case as a school resource officer, a sex crime and child abuse investigator and a victim's advocate until she got married and started having children.  Kara now uses her own story and experiences, as well as her years of work in law enforcement to advocate for and empower others. Through the years, Kara realized that she survived what she went through for a very specific purpose: to spread hope and to help other survivors know that they can find healing, hope, and purpose. Kara reminds all survivors that “we are who we are because of what happened but we are not defined by it.” Kara is involved in several organizations, initiatives, and advocacy groups. She speaks regularly across the country and is active on social media - as a way to share her story, answer questions, advocate for other survivors and educate the public. Kara's story was recently featured on Oxygen (“Escaping Captivity: The Kara Robinson Story”) and in People magazine. Kara is working on a book and has so much more to come! How going through the Sundance Ceremony transformed his life and image of being a warrior. Air Force Academy experiences What a warrior is and what a warrior is not. Kara Robinson Chamberlain - Why you must be vigilant about your safety. Brought to you by AppSumo's application marketplace (https://social.appsumo.com/passion), Gusto's all-in-one HR solution https://www.gusto.com/passionstruck, the Policygenius insurance comparison website (https://www.policygenius.com/), and Indeed the platform for hiring (https://www.indeed.com/passionstruck). Kara Robinson Chamberlain was 15 years old when she was approached by a man in her friend's front yard in Columbia, South Carolina. At first, the gentleman appeared friendly, but then he drew a gun, shoved it against her neck, and forced Kara into the back of his car into a storage bin. Over the next 18 hours, Kara was held and sexually assaulted before she miraculously escaped her capture. Kara's quick action and extensive information she provided law enforcement unveiled that her kidnapper was not only a pedophile but a serial killer who had murdered three other female victims in Virginia: 16-year-old Sofia Silva in 1996 and a year later, sisters 12-year-old Kati Lisk and 15-year-old Kristin Lisk. Kara's story is nothing short of remarkable. Not only did Kara Robinson Chamberlain heroically escape her kidnapper, but her bravery was instrumental in aiding the police in catching a serial killer before he could murder another victim. What I discuss with Kara Robinson Chamberlain I thought Kara's story and her long recovery of overcoming the trauma it caused needed to be told. I invited Kara to be on the Passion Struck podcast to narrate her account in her own words. In addition to discussing what happened in 2002, we also discuss why outwardly showing strength can hide how a victim is dealing with their trauma. Kara explains how her coping with trauma started to take over her life and the steps she took to overcome it. She describes how she is now using her ordeal and years of work in law enforcement to communicate to groups worldwide.  Kara tells her account as a tool to help train those who work with victims.
