TSLA, +1.16% said late Wednesday it will post its first-quarter financial results after market close on Wednesday, April 29. Tesla's executives are scheduled to hold a live question-and-answer webcast at 6:30 p.m. Eastern to discuss the company's performance. Analysts polled by FactSet expect the Silicon Valley car maker to report an adjusted loss of 25 cents a share on sales of $6.2 billion in the quarter, which has been marred by factory stoppages due to the coronavirus pandemic." according to Market Watch   https://www.marketwatch.com/story/tesla-to-report-q1-results-on-april-29-2020-04-15   Tesla's board of directors learned late Thursday the Gigafactory in Sparks is scheduled to reopen May 4. There will be a new raft of safety measures such as: masks, social distancing, PPE vending machines, gloves, temperature screening (anyone over 100.4 degrees sent home), extra cleaning of door handles and push bars, hourly cleaning of entrances, sanitizer and wipes provided, transport shuttles capped at 30% of max capacity, workstation partitions and at IT helpdesks, conference rooms closed.   KARMA REVERO GTE ANNOUNCED, WILL BECOME BRAND’S FIRST FULLY ELECTRIC VEHICLE  "The Karma Revero lineup is expanding as the company has released the first details about the Revero GTE." reports CarScoops: "Set to become the company’s first fully electric vehicle, the Revero GTE is based on the E-Flex platform and will be launched in the spring of 2021. Karma is staying coy on specifics, but confirmed there will be two versions at launch. The entry-level Revero GTE will have a 75 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that provides a range of approximately 200 miles (322 km). But the company has been in financial trouble. Uniti has been granted corporate restructuring by Lund district court." says an article I found in Swedish and translated from mestmotor.se: "Uniti was started as a spin-off project from Lund University four years ago. Initially, it was said that the car would be manufactured Landskrona and provide a thousand jobs in Skåne. Later, the company decided to move production to England. The latest bid was that they started receiving orders and that production would start in China by the summer of 2020."   The UK website is still operating. The range is 150km with a 12kWh battery and 300km WLTP with a 24kWh pack.   On 29th December 2018 they raised £1.1million on Crowdcube from 1,945 investors.   on 8th April The website digital.di.se says: "So far, the application has not been granted by the district court - but if the restructuring is approved, it means, for example, that the company can get help with state salary support and negotiate debts while the business is protected from bankruptcy. Nissan says all-polymer batteries are said to be the next generation of lithium-ion batteries. The carmakers tech, known as bipolar structure all-polymer battery technology, will help consumers and communities to more effectively use low-cost or renewable energy at a lower initial cost. This technology is said to increase charging capacity relative to battery volume, while also enhancing safety by replacing liquid electrolytes with polymers. That latter figure gives this new X5 xDrive45e (we’ll call it the X5 PHEV from now on) one of the most impressive electric ranges of any plug-in model – up to 54 miles. Powered by a 72kWh battery, the all-electric EC11 light commercial van will be able to recharge in as little as 1.5 hours using a CCS2 fast-charging plug type with a maximum 60kW charge rate. A new report by Benchmark Mineral Intelligence shows just what a stranglehold China has developed on the EV battery supply chain. The company plans to show off a concept version of the pickup before the end of the year, and eventually sell it with a starting price that's less than its $135,000 Karma Revero. Coming to Europe in the first half of 2020, the top-tier version of the new premium EV will offer up to 446 kilometers of range (277 miles) and is powered by dual electric motors with a total power output of 265kW, or around 350 horsepower. The EPA estimates aren’t out yet, but expect the range numbers to be slightly lower. We’ll probably see an announcement from Google in a few days or weeks, though. The last time Google Maps was updated with a new EV-related feature was back in April when they added real-time availability of charging ports. Toyota says it'll also go from 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds. As for eco credentials, the RAV4 Prime can go an estimated 39 miles on its battery alone, which is better than any current plug-in hybrid SUV and behind only the Polestar 1, Chevrolet Volt (soon-to-be-discontinued) and Honda Clarity. We haven’t seen it since then." says Motor1.com but now we have some photos of a new run: "There’s a good chance the E-Tron in the video could be the hotter S version. The intakes that flank the front fascia are bigger than the ones on the standard E-Tron, though not by much. Larger and wider wheels plus a new rear diffuser design hint that this is sportier than the current offering.  When Audi unveiled the original concept in 2015, the E-Tron had a 3-motor setup with two powering the rear axle and one powering the front. The E-Tron on sale today has two motors. This could be the 3-motor E-Tron. The Chevrolet Menlo has adopted the athletic design of the Chevrolet FNR-X all-purpose sports concept vehicle. The Chevrolet Menlo comes with the new-generation MyLink+ infotainment system. It’s been a case of biding time, according to Honda Europe’s senior vice president Tom Gardner." says Driving.co.uk: "Now that the final piece of the jigsaw has fallen into place, Honda has a bold new goal: ensuring every car it sells in Europe by 2022 is electrified, facilitated by the launch of six hybrid or pure-electric cars over the next three years. The popularity of the CR-V Hybrid has had no small part to play in this drive towards battery power. While the electrification target is being influenced by demand from car buyers, Honda admits political pressure has also been a motivation. Tough new emissions regulations across Europe and the rest of the world have helped force all car makers’ hands."   Honda Europe’s president Katsushi Inoue did nothing to change that perception. “Our focus is on hybrid and electric vehicles now,” he told us. “Maybe hydrogen fuel cell cars will come, but that’s a technology for the next era.”   Ian Howells, Honda Europe’s senior vice president, added: “We’re in the situation where the infrastructure isn’t there either [to support hydrogen fuel cell cars]. The NEM supplies electricity to Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania" says Steve Hanley for CleanTechnica: "During those 10 minutes, solar power led the way, providing 32.5% of the available electricity. Wind was next at 15.7%, and hydro provided 1.9%. There are more than 2 million small rooftop solar systems in those 5 Australian states and they provided 72% of the solar power, while solar power plants contributed the other 28%."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/11/10/australian-grid-hits-50-renewables-for-first-time/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS   RAJEEV NARAYAN I would prefer both incentives for EVs and penalties for polluting but if forced to pick one, I guess I would pick penalties for carbon emissions. I am assuming that would cost governments less than direct cash incentives and therefore be able to be applied more broadly for longer than incentives alone.   STEPHEN JAMES I am definitely a carrot person. I have solar panels and I really wanted to buy a EV car. I was looking at the MG ZS EV but I could simply not afford the extra £8000 that the same petrol version MG ZS costs. I bought the petrol MG ZS and I love it but I still feel gutted that the EV version is still out of my price range. If the government had better incentive programs running to bring the on the road price down I would have definitely purchased the full EV model.   BILL POLLOCK Price Parity...a stick that doesn't look like a stick. We listeners don't need a moral incentive to choose electric, most people don't.  As the soft barriers of range and charge time fall away what remains is the cost to buy. In Canada a fully kitted out Jaguar F-Pace costs $85,000; whereas an equally kitted out I-Pace costs $115,000. So...if you price both the F-Pace and the I-Pace at $105,000, for the time being the added margin on the F's will balance the losses (if any) on the I's.   PETER BRYN I love EVs, but to me they’re a means to an end. The goal is to eliminate emissions, and therefore absolutely the most important policy is a price on carbon. For listeners who feel the same, please get involved with Citizens’ Climate Lobby.   PETE FROM CALIFORNIA The carrot. Always the carrot. We don't have EVs with comparable range in winter climates so sticks are kind of a rotten nudge right now. More importantly, I want better carrots. Forget a "per EV basis", how about a billion dollar incentive towards a solid state battery that gets 500 to 800 watt hours per kilogram and can be cut clean in half without thermal runaway, and another billion dollars if it's royalty-free? What we need is a research solution that makes EVs accessible for every type of vehicle, and tackling things at the battery manufacturing end is what will get us there.   SACHA FLEURY In short , STICKS ! Incentives are often seen by many as giveaway time the wealthy. While carrots are more positive ,most of the people that I’ve seen insisting they need to burn fossil fuels state cost as being the main driver , proper BEVs are still marginally more expensive at time of purchase for equal functionality but the price of ICE vehicles is lower because it’s practically free to pollute in many countries ... Therefore we need sticks to  (in the form of non-regressive carbon pricing) : for example , we could make it such that any new non-bev that sells for the median price of a BEV or more would require paying the cost of dealing with the environmental impact of the vehicle (say 30 to 40% of MSRP ) This cashflow then funds the climate change initiatives like charging infrastructure while customers’ purchase decision becomes a lot easier. Doing it this way (as opposed to fuel tax ) won’t impact people with lesser means  - people that can’t afford a new car in the first place.   MUNAVER I prefer the carrot approach as incentives can be offered as money off     On purchase of the car . Others like reduced stamp duty ,registration cost free parking in all paid parking lots , waiving toll road fees and further incentives when trading in ice cars for EV’s . This would make any  new ice car purchaser think hard and long before purchasing an ice car   John Fruhwirth After much deliberation, I come down on the side of using carrots versus sticks to get people to convert to EVs. My reasons are as follows: The case for the carrot It's a good idea to make the right thing to do the easy thing to do. Pleasure is a better motivator than pain. Enlightened self interest is a fabulous motivator. The case against the stick. Inflicting pain builds resentment and may lead to retribution. People are very creative when devising methods of avoiding pain. Inflicting pain is debilitating and so counter productive.   LUKE MCCArthy I would say use the carrot for consumers which will in turn drive manufacturer decision making. I think that the consumer uptake of EVs has or is moving from innovators to early adopters using the diffusion of innovation theory. The early adopters or even the early majority already know the upsides of EVs and I would expect there are only a few things holding them back from buying, one being the cost. So in this regard the carrot works best.   RICHARD FROM AUSTRALIA If it has to be one or the other, I'd have to say Stick. If we're serious about tackling the climate crisis and pollution that we've done nothing about since we discovered its impact, we need to introduce harsh measures now to get the mainstream off fossils and move to Electrification. I'd introduce a £1 extra tax on every litre of fossil fuels every calendar year from now on, including for aviation, farming and industry. I'd also remove the ability of companies to claim the cost of fossil fuels as a tax deduction.   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   What do you prefer, the carrot or the stick? But the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news, said the company told dealers last week it was stopping production to test its charging mechanism."   In a statement to CNBC: “We recently discovered a non-standard condition during a final quality check; stopped production and deliveries; and began additional testing and analysis, which is progressing well, we are in close contact with our LiveWire dealers and customers and have assured them they can continue to ride LiveWire motorcycles. Every hour it's parked in the sun generates five miles of range, so Aptera claims 44 miles of range in a day based on solar charging from the summer sun in San Diego. Users can still plug in the Aptera EV, which Aptera recently claimed will have a 1000-mile range between charges. The EV was designed with solar in mind, and it has more than 180 panels that are built into the car's composite structure. It has an electric drive and an electrically operated cooling system, so that food products can be delivered with zero local emissions. Its innovative feature is that the cooling system is connected to the vehicle electrical system, which minimises the need for additional batteries. In September, the ""Arctic Fox" demonstrated its suitability for everyday use in a four-week pilot project with online meal kit provider HelloFresh in Belgium. The "Arctic Fox" supported up to 50 deliveries per tour and was able to keep the temperature in the cargo area (chilled goods) reliably. Thus it fulfilled the urban delivery use case successfully. Imagine there is an egg between your foot and the gas pedal to remind yourself to accelerate slowly and gently. When breaking allow time to just slow by not having your foot on the gas peddle. 2. Adhere to your vehicle's recommended fuel type. ... if you’re suppose to put regular fuel in the car do it. If you’re suppose to put premium fuel in – do that. 3. Watch the weight. ... unless you’re driving a cargo van, don’t carry cargo regularly, for no reason. 4. Reduce drag. ... roof racks, bike racks, and storage accessories on your car add weight and increase aerodynamic drag. They aren’t for everyday use. 5. Inflate those tires to the correct pressure. ... flatter tires have more contact with the road and take more fuel to propel. Also watch the tread pattern of the tires. 6. Avoid prolonged idling. Your engine consumes half a gallon to a gallon of fuel every hour. Don’t rev your engine while starting in the morning. Let it run for 20 seconds and you’re good to go. 7. Drive in the highest possible gear but without putting undue stress on your engine. . . for a manual. Automatics – keep it on overdrive8. Forget aftermarket solutions . . performance enhancing gizmo or technology make promises but don’t deliver or the effect is negligible.9. Utilize online resources to find the best deals on gas. Something like Gas Buddy or AAA, Kroger fuel discounts, Wal-Mart giftcard discounts10. Refuel in the morning, not towards the end of the day . . . you can save a dollar of two because the gas is cooler and denser. When it expands, less gas makes up the same volume11. Do not ever forget to replacing your air filter 12. Be sensible when using the air conditioning – is city traffic better to roll down the windows13. Keep your car tuned up14.
