Our latest guest comes from across the pond, Ireland to be exact. Graham Brennan is responsible for the development and management of SEAI's Electric Vehicle (EV) programmes which have disbursed €74m in support to help establish the current market of over 35,000 EVs on Irish roads. Fiat CEO Olivier François has already confirmed that a hotter electrified Abarth version is in the works, but now we have confirmation that far more electrification will enter Fiat's lineup. In fact, the Italian brand intends to go completely electric before the end of this decade." according to Motor1.com: "As for Fiat's electric ambitions, though the 500e looks quite similar to internal-combustion-powered versions of the iconic small car, it's actually the first car from the brand built from the ground-up to be an EV. Manufactured in Turin, Italy, the 500e features a 42 kWh battery powering a single electric motor good for 118 bhp (88 kilowatts). According to Chief Technology Officer Thomas Schmall, this does not involve individual plants but the entire cell business." reports electrive: "By 2030, Volkswagen plans to build six new giga-factories for cell production with its partners in Europe alone, at a cost in the double-digit billions, as the Group announced at its Power Day in March. According to [Chief Technology Officer Thomas Schmall] Schmall, this is enough to equip more than five million cars with batteries. The battery would be positioned between two rows of opposite-facing seats, in an arrangement that, Page-Roberts claims, is "far more compact" than existing designs. With around 1,500 ICE vehicles on the island, there was no odor of eco-friendly goodness." says autoevolution: "The five-year plan is meant to transform Astypalea into the first “smart and sustainable island” among the Greek provinces and act as an example for the rest of Greece. It's also a platform for study, helping Volkswagen understand a myriad of factors that will surely affect a transition to an electric society.  Astypalea is currently a mostly diesel-driven island, as very few alternative energy sources have been set up except generators. The Japanese carmaker is pinning hopes on the Ariya, its first all-electric crossover SUV, to pep up its EV range." says Nikkei Asia: "Nissan said it would also do more to attract customers unfamiliar with electric vehicles, opening a website on Friday to allow Ariya preordering and virtual driving using augmented reality technology. Nissan's chief operating officer, Ashwani Gupta, told Nikkei Asia in a recent interview that the Japanese carmaker is set to share close to 70% of key EV components with its alliance partners, France's Renault and Japan's Mitsubishi Motors, to lower EV production cost." https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Automobiles/Nissan-launches-flagship-Ariya-EV-in-Japan NISSAN POSTPONES ‘ARIYA' LAUNCH DUE TO LACK OF CHIPS"Nissan is postponing the market launch of its new electric model Ariya by several months due to the ongoing chip shortage. The Japanese domestic market is to be served first, so an export to Europe in 2021 seems rather unlikely." according to electrive: "When the Ariya was first unveiled in July last year, Nissan had announced that it would be on the market in mid-2021. Now the company announced that only a limited edition of the Ariya will be available for launch in Japan from “this winter”, for which pre-orders are now opening there. Reservations for the Ariya in Europe, the USA and China will be possible “later this year”. Nissan does not reveal when exactly deliveries to export markets are to start. That Nissan has chosen to start with the simplest model rather than the top-of-the-line four-wheeler in the face of the chip shortage is likely due precisely to the lack of semiconductors: The smaller battery with fewer modules requires fewer electronics" https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/04/nissan-postpones-ariya-launch-due-to-lack-of-chips/ EV STARTUPS RACE FOR A 'GOLDEN TICKET' ORDER"The future of a bevy of commercial EV startups seeking investor capital through blank-check IPOs rests largely in the hands of a small group of big companies such as UPS, FedEx, DHL and Amazon. With each carrier having tens of thousands of vehicles in its global fleet, an order from a package delivery giant can launch a startup on the road to manufacturing scale and profitability, and serve as a marketing tool to win orders from other big customers." reports Autmotive News: " Some startups already have their golden ticket. Arrival, which went public via a merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), has an order for up to 10,000 vans from UPS. The Arrival electric test van decked out in UPS' distinct brown livery is popular with drivers at the package delivery giant's facility in London's Kentish Town district. During a demonstration of the van by Luke Wake, UPS vice president of maintenance and engineering, several drivers asked: "When can we drive one?" The van's battery pack will allow UPS to add automatic doors for drivers and LED lights in the back to help drivers find packages more quickly. Such features can save seconds per delivery -- which add up as UPS delivers 2 billion packages annually." https://www.autonews.com/manufacturing/ev-startups-race-golden-ticket-order TEXAS BID TO IMPOSE SPECIAL STATE TAX ON ELECTRIC VEHICLES FAILS — FOR NOW"An effort to impose what amounts to a special state tax on electric vehicles fell short of the finish line in the recently concluded legislative session, although the reprieve from new road use fees might be temporary." saus Austin American Statesman: "That's because debate about the issue largely focused on how much and when — not if — owners of electric and other vehicles that aren't powered by gasoline should pay. The possible fees are likely to come up again in 2023 during the next regular session of the Legislature, if not before then in a special session. the legislation, which would have set the fee at $200 annually for most electric cars, calling it nearly double the amount many drivers of equivalent conventionally powered vehicles pay in gasoline taxes each year." https://eu.statesman.com/story/business/2021/06/02/texas-senate-bill-state-tax-electric-vehicles-fails-for-now/7490493002/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERSRajeev NArayanI think for most workplaces, 7.2 kW or even 3.8 kW Level II chargers would suffice. In just a few hours these chargers could offset the commute to and from work also, for the cost of just one DC fast charger, you could buy several level II chargers.  If these were more common, it would make EVs an option for people who do not have access to charging at home. Ideally it would be nice if workplaces got incentives to help offset the cost of installation, and for adding solar to help charge vehicles. Some places here in San Antonio simply contract with Charting companies, unfortunately they typically charge about 31c/kWh, and install just a few chargers to maximize profits. I would prefer if workplaces install their own chargers and either provide free charging or charge less exorbitant prices. Shahad ChoudhuryWe need more, slower chargers at workplaces. My work is limited to 8 chargepoint plugs because of the grid connection, but it only takes a couple hours to charge up most EVs on them.  This led to lots of frustration and wasted time (pre lockdown) when people moved their full cars, since multiple other people are all rushing down to try and get the spot when they're notified Barry WolfFor USA: run many (at least 10% of spaces) 20 amp circuits to the parking lot, with one circuit per parking spot, using 4 conductor cable but make each circuit a 120 V circuit (extra unused conductor enables 240 V service in the future). Charging at either 12 amps or 16 amps @ 120V for eight hours will provide ~11 kWh or ~15 kWh, respectively, of energy during the work day. This will provide30 to 60 miles of range, depending on EVSE amperage and car efficiency. Either have people bring own EVSE or provide L1 EVSEs.  Karl CramerI'd be happy if every workplace parking lamppost had an outdoor GFCI rated plug socket at its base. Since were there for 8-12 hours anyway we can get a long slow charge that's better for our battery life anyway. Ron BarberI assisted in the specification and configuration of the chargers at my workplace 2.5 years ago. One site of about 600 people we installed 14 Level 2 chargers (7.6kW or 3.8kW if both of the pair in use). A second location has about 1200 people and 24 Level 3 chargers. The units are from ClipperCreek which has provided excellent service. There is no charge to using the units but we ask people to use for only 4 hrs per session. It can vertebrae a point of contention with the number of EVs more than tripling since install.I also developed hardware and software to monitor the chargers and provide a web site for status.  The charging power is a bit low but some constraints on available power near the parking lot, but I did take a survey prior to speciation (about a year in planning) and collected commute distances and EV types to analyze average charging times needed. The system has proven to be well utilized. Michael ClasquinLots and lots of 240 volt sockets  that we can plug our granny chargers into, weatherproofed if necessary. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   CANADA TO SPEND $8 MILLION ON 160 DC CHARGERS IN ONTARIO "There is a lot going on in Canada in terms of fast-charging infrastructure as Petro-Canada launched a coast-to-coast network, Tesla completed its coast-to-coast Supercharging highway and Electrify Canada is expanding." reports InsideEVs: "The latest news is that the Government of Canada will provide an additional $8 million CAD for more fast chargers in Ontario. The plan is to build 160 chargers at 73 locations, which would be $110,000 per site and $50,000 per charger on average. The investment is part of the strategic plan to switch to zero-emission vehicles by 2040. There is also a Long Range Plus version of the Model X SUV, which is rated at 351 miles of range." says Car And Driver: "Tesla has not provided any details on how it added the additional range, and the only change we can see on the Model S is a new set of 19-inch standard wheels with a so-called Tempest design. We do know that there is some sort of software tweak involved, as Musk tweeted that the company will roll out a software update for existing Model S and Model X owners to unlock extra range."   Engadget says: "You could theoretically drive from New York City to Pittsburgh with enough battery life left to go on a brief tour. The Model X, meanwhile, is now estimated to drive 351 miles on a charge instead of the earlier 328 miles. The Nissan LEAF is the first pure electric vehicle to win an overall segment award in the history of the VDS study.   PORSCHE DELIVERS FIRST TAYCAN 4S "Porsche has started deliveries of the Taycan 4S, the less expensive version starting at $104,000, of its new premium electric car." says Electrek: "Performance battery: a 79.2kWh pack with a total output of 390kW and a 225kW charging capacity. Performance battery Plus: a 93.4kWh pack, same as Turbo, but limited to 420kW versus 560kW for Turbo versions. It has a 270kW charging capacity. Public chargers have different access requirements and you might need to download a app like Plugsurfing and create an account to make use of the charger. This functionality will be improved in future software updates and we will continuously add new chargers.”   TESLA UNLOCKS REAR HEATED SEATS FOR MODEL 3 SR AND SR PLUS "Tesla is offering rear heated seats for the Model 3 Standard Range and Standard Range Plus as a $300 upgrade that can be activated through an over-the-air software update." says Joey at Teslarati: "The latest update follows a request by Tesla Model 3 owner who asked Elon Musk if a cold-weather OTA update can also activate the rear heated seats. Model 3 variants all have the necessary hardware for heated seats, enabling Tesla to easily manage feature activation through software. The result proposed in the new patent is an end-to-end distributed grid management system with the capability to identify and manage assets on the grid, in businesses, and in homes as a means of balancing the grid more effectively. We started in Halden in Norway. Went down the Swedish west coast to Gothenborg and took the ferry to Denmark for a party. Then we headed for Leipzig for visiting the BMW site there and look at the i3 and i8 production. Next stop was Prague before travelling to Munich for some talks whit Ionity and a visit at BMW Welt. On our way to Italy, we drove through Austria and Switzerland before crossed the Stelvio Pass (2.757 m). When in Italy we visited Garda, Venezia, Firenze, Toscana and Genova before a short visit in Franch and Chamonix. On our trip home we also visited and charged in Luxembourg, Belgium and the Nederlands. On our three weeks journey, we drove some 6500 km in 12 countries (included Norway). As a charging nerd, I tested charging my BMW i3 (94AH) in all the countries. The largest barrier for travelling long distances in an EV is in our head.   DAVID PARTINGTON The longest trip I ever did was 500miles each way from London to Dundee in my 24kwh Nissan Leaf back in December 2018. Each way, it took over 13 hours and 10 rapids to cover the 500miles - not really a journey for the faint hearted, definitely a bit of an adventure - but in some ways I can't wait to try it again, perhaps later on this year, and see if I can do it more quickly in the summer, and with the benefit of there being a lot more rapids in place now, which means you can take bigger 'bets' for each leg between charges.   JON KNODEL The longest road trip I’ve done in my Tesla Model 3 RW Long Range was 550 miles each way. From Santa Barbara, CA to the northeast forests of California. A robust fast charging network is the cure for any “range anxiety” or adventure to remote forests! Charging was slowed since I went 100%, so I could have a climate control at night while our ICE car compadres bundled up I their tents and trailers. I did have to stop at a Gas station though... I accumulated so many bugs from driving California’s Central Valley my autopilot cameras and human cameras were blocked. I’m considering a few longer trips as well. Electrons know no limits!   Jim McLaren When I had my Nissan Leaf I did a number of 400 mile road trips, but when I picked up my new Tesla Model 3, I decided I would be more adventurous. In November I set off on a 1200 mile journey from Falkirk, just outside Edinburgh and drove to Spain, ran the San Sebastian marathon, had a coffee and a sandwich then drove home again - sleeping in the car on the way. The abundance of Tesla supercharger stations made charging very easy and the level 2 autonomous features of the car meant that it did over 90% of the distance driven itself, taking a lot of the strain out the drive in what was mainly poor weather conditions.   ANDERS HOVE Last year I did three 1000-mile EV trips on 3 continents to check out the charging infrastructure: in California, from Beijing to Inner Mongolia, and in Germany and France (the latter was the longest of the three). But this is evolving so quickly that I'd like to do it again. I'm very interested in the route you are considering, since for my European trip I had considered going into Italy but it looked like charging infrastructure was a bit sparse. As well, on my European trip, EV renting was a bit inflexible, and my company required drop off at the same place as I rented the vehicle.   BRENT KINGSFORD About six months after I bought my Chevy Bolt, I decided it was time to prove to myself that a quick 1200+ mile road trip from my house in Washington State to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City , Utah was possible.  With a little help from Plug Share I mapped my route there and back. Despite a few charger issues, we made it there. After moving my son’s residence, we turned right back around and headed home.  There were a few times I was worried about making it to the next ccs dc fast charger, but we did it.    JAMES DUBBEN 4 Months in to owning our Tesla M3 Dual Motor LR we set off across the USA. Florida to Washington 2,508 miles in 3 days. 20 supercharger stops. Healthiest trip ever across the US. Week with friends and family then 2 more weeks wandering across the west US seeing 10 National parks/monuments. 7,200 miles overall.   MARK WESTON I took my then 3 week old Hyundai kona electric car last May from where I live just outside Waltham Abbey Essex to East Kilbride Scotland 398 miles each way.  Being a novice I made some mistakes but realised that the public Charging  I.e Highway Electric need to improve available charging stations and more of them.   MATTHEW BOOTH I myself have driven 480Km each way from Northern Switzerland to Italy for our holiday, in my Jaguar iPace. It's actually no different from driving a vehicle with ICE, other than it's quieter and more relaxing. There are so many charging stations in Europe now it's not challenging at all.   Bill Miller When we got our new 2018 BMW i3 in March, I convinced my reluctant wife that a long road trip in our new car would be “fun”!  We traveled a sizable chunk of the SE USA taking our journey through 6 states all of which were pretty unaware of the existence of EV’s.   At that time the entire state of Alabama had zero public charging stations. However, since about all car dealers had at least one EV on their list of available vehicles, they had installed a charging station. So our BMW was welcomed at all different brands of dealers. In fact a Nissan dealer offered to give us a courtesy ride to & back from a local restaurant for lunch while our car was charging.     MARK WALKER I'm emailing to answer your question of the week. To date our longest EV trip has been from Parry Sound ON to Cornwall, ON, approximately 500 km. No issues for the most part, but we have to take different routes depending on whether we decide to charge and have an outing at a level 2, or just want to get there. We have a EV Road trip planned for the summer, travelling from Parry Sound, ON to Prince Edward Island, a distance of approximately 1800 km. We aren't overly concerned due to some planned stops for overnights, not to mention we have a 2 year old who needs breaks in the car! We're vey much looking forward to it. We drive a Kona Electric, which the canadian model only comes with the 64kwh battery, and the heat pump. As a further intersting tid-bit, a Tesla Model Y was spotted in Sudbury ON yesterday. It was -25 celcisus and it was spotted at the supercharger there with california plates. Presumably doing some cold weather testing.   JOHAN EINEVIK I dream of driving with the family to Spain and back. Its about 3000 km  from my home in Sweden to the center of Spain. Hope I will do it when I get my Model Y.   TOM LAST My first big EV road trip was Anglesey to Samoens in the French alps in my Free Supercharging 2015 Tesla Model S 85D in Feb 2016 when the Supercharger network was so much less developed than it is today.  It was great, a few big gaps (200+ miles between chargers) required a bit of hypermiling but all in all it was a breeze.  In October 2019 we took another trip from Anglesey to Lake Geneva and then home via the Nurburgring in my Model 3 Performance, the difference was massive, Superchargers are so abundant now its really no issue if you can access them, again all the charging was free as I was lucky enough to have 10,000 free miles based on 2 referrals I made back in May 2019.   NICO JANSEN We drove more than 3k km in 3 weeks with our Renault Zoë ZE 40 (your car). We went from Belgium to Sweden for hollyday (see map). Charge stops we're long given the slow charging speed of the old Zoë. Had some trouble with rapid gating battery (1 kW charging instead of 22) on our first day (40°C that day). Finding a charger was also a challenge sometimes in lower populated areas. Saw enough superchargers though.   GUILLAME I've been doing international trips for the last 5 years with my EVs (2 Leaf, 1 i3). Last one was from Ireland through France, Corsica, north of Italy, Monaco, Switzerland, Germany (Frankfurt Motor Show), Luxembourg, Belgium and back to France and Ireland : 4500km in 3 days. No more than 600km per day (applies to my BMW i3 94Ah, probably similar for your Zoé Ze40). Plenty 22kW AC charge points in France so your Zoé will literally feel at home there.   SHARON & MICHAEL MOSS We are currently on our return trip from Fully Charged in Austen where we displayed our 2020 Kia Soul. By the time we get home we will have traveled 6,500 miles from our home on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Other than the extra few hours to charge to a days travel we have found that the EV trip was no different from a gas car, other than the quiet.  At most fast charging stations we were the only vehicle and did not have to wait. We found that when we stopped to charge we spent the time getting a bite to eat, getting a bathroom break, taking a quick walk or checking out local attractions. Your trip sounds like a great adventure, much more fun than flying and better for the environment!   henrik brandt Last fall me and my wife took a road trip from from Copenhagen to Volterra - Italy in our 2015 Tesla Model S70D. A total of 4,511 kilometers with a total of 29 charging stops at Tesla Supercharger locations as shown below.   JEFF ERBES total 2,100 round trip. That was my first long road trip and it went fine, of course Tesla tells you when and where you need to go to charge and how long each charging will take. We took 2 days to do it and we stayed in a hotel that had chargers so in the morning we left with a full charge... that was awesome! When we got there we charged with a 110 outlet which took about 24 hours but no rush we were staying for 5 days anyway.   Steve Birkett | Plug & Play EV I just completed a 4,232-mile round trip from Boston, Massachusetts to Austin, Texas in a Chevy Bolt EV, in order to attend the first Fully Charged Live in the USA. Lots of folks came from far-flung corners of the country in Teslas, of course, but I felt like the few of us who covered major miles in non-Tesla EVs proved an important point: the North American public charging infrastructure is now extensive and reliable enough to get us across the country in a relatively short space of time! I left Wed. 29th Jan, got to Austin on Fri. 31st, spent the weekend enjoying the show and was back on the East coast by the following Tuesday 4th Feb.   MARKUS LAFER I wouldn't be concerned to go from UK to Pisa too much using Newmotion/Shell charging cards taking in consideration the number of chargers on the route. Maybe in Italy it could be a little bit more of a challenge, but not in Western Europe.   STEVE DAVIES My wife and I made a US cross country trip from New Jersey to Arizona this holiday season. This was the most relaxing long drive I've ever done. 5 days each way. 3 or 4 Supercharger stops each day averaging about 25 min per charge. Free destination charging each night at hotels.   JACK In August 2018 my wife and I loaded up our year-old Chevrolet Bolt and drove from our home in eastern Massachusetts to Southern California and back for a family get-together, about 7000 miles total. We folded down the back seats and stuffed the back of the Bolt with our usual luggage plus a tent and camping supplies, brought a portable 32 amp EVSE to charge at state campgrounds overnight, ordered every charging network RFID card, downloaded all of the apps, and planned a route that minimized the gaps between CCS chargers. Do you know of anyone offering such a solution in the USA or could you reach out to your adoring audience to see if any of them knowS   AUDI E-TRON S POSSIBLY SPIED TESTING AT THE NURBURGRING AGAIN "We first spied a hotter version of the Audi E-Tron in May when our spy photographers caught the E-Tron S at the Nürburgring. We haven’t seen it since then." says Motor1.com but now we have some photos of a new run: "There’s a good chance the E-Tron in the video could be the hotter S version. The intakes that flank the front fascia are bigger than the ones on the standard E-Tron, though not by much. Larger and wider wheels plus a new rear diffuser design hint that this is sportier than the current offering.  When Audi unveiled the original concept in 2015, the E-Tron had a 3-motor setup with two powering the rear axle and one powering the front. The E-Tron on sale today has two motors. This could be the 3-motor E-Tron. Acceleration from zero to 60 takes 4.5 seconds as opposed to 5.4 seconds, and the dual-motor RWD layout features torque vectoring to better handling in the twisties. Total system output? The Chevrolet Blazer seven-seat mid-large SUV also was shown for the first time in China at the event." according to Green Car Congress: "The Chevrolet Menlo will be the brand’s first fully electric vehicle available in China. The Menlo has a constant-speed range of up to 410 kilometers (255 miles) under New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) conditions on a single charge. The Chevrolet Menlo has adopted the athletic design of the Chevrolet FNR-X all-purpose sports concept vehicle. The Chevrolet Menlo comes with the new-generation MyLink+ infotainment system. Functions include virtual car key, remote control and intelligent voice recognition."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/11/20191110-menlo.html   HONDA WORKS ON SECOND EV, QUITS DIESEL, AND PUTS HYDROGEN ON HOLD "Why has it taken until now for [Honda] to commit to plug-in power? It’s been a case of biding time, according to Honda Europe’s senior vice president Tom Gardner." says Driving.co.uk: "Now that the final piece of the jigsaw has fallen into place, Honda has a bold new goal: ensuring every car it sells in Europe by 2022 is electrified, facilitated by the launch of six hybrid or pure-electric cars over the next three years. The popularity of the CR-V Hybrid has had no small part to play in this drive towards battery power. While the electrification target is being influenced by demand from car buyers, Honda admits political pressure has also been a motivation. Tough new emissions regulations across Europe and the rest of the world have helped force all car makers’ hands."   Honda Europe’s president Katsushi Inoue did nothing to change that perception. “Our focus is on hybrid and electric vehicles now,” he told us. “Maybe hydrogen fuel cell cars will come, but that’s a technology for the next era.”   Ian Howells, Honda Europe’s senior vice president, added: “We’re in the situation where the infrastructure isn’t there either [to support hydrogen fuel cell cars]. There is an infrastructure being developed very rapidly for battery electric cars, but there’s nothing really to talk of about hydrogen, so there’s a way to go yet.”   https://www.driving.co.uk/news/honda-embracing-electrified-cars-now-right-time/   FROM MATT GROOBY: AUSTRALIAN GRID HITS 50% RENEWABLES FOR FIRST TIME "renewables provided 50.2% of the electricity available on Australia’s National Energy Market in the first week of November. The NEM supplies electricity to Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania" says Steve Hanley for CleanTechnica: "During those 10 minutes, solar power led the way, providing 32.5% of the available electricity. Wind was next at 15.7%, and hydro provided 1.9%. There are more than 2 million small rooftop solar systems in those 5 Australian states and they provided 72% of the solar power, while solar power plants contributed the other 28%."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/11/10/australian-grid-hits-50-renewables-for-first-time/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS   RAJEEV NARAYAN I would prefer both incentives for EVs and penalties for polluting but if forced to pick one, I guess I would pick penalties for carbon emissions. I am assuming that would cost governments less than direct cash incentives and therefore be able to be applied more broadly for longer than incentives alone.   STEPHEN JAMES I am definitely a carrot person. I have solar panels and I really wanted to buy a EV car. I was looking at the MG ZS EV but I could simply not afford the extra £8000 that the same petrol version MG ZS costs. I bought the petrol MG ZS and I love it but I still feel gutted that the EV version is still out of my price range. If the government had better incentive programs running to bring the on the road price down I would have definitely purchased the full EV model.   BILL POLLOCK Price Parity...a stick that doesn't look like a stick. We listeners don't need a moral incentive to choose electric, most people don't.  As the soft barriers of range and charge time fall away what remains is the cost to buy. In Canada a fully kitted out Jaguar F-Pace costs $85,000; whereas an equally kitted out I-Pace costs $115,000. So...if you price both the F-Pace and the I-Pace at $105,000, for the time being the added margin on the F's will balance the losses (if any) on the I's.   PETER BRYN I love EVs, but to me they’re a means to an end. The goal is to eliminate emissions, and therefore absolutely the most important policy is a price on carbon. For listeners who feel the same, please get involved with Citizens’ Climate Lobby.   PETE FROM CALIFORNIA The carrot. Always the carrot. We don't have EVs with comparable range in winter climates so sticks are kind of a rotten nudge right now. More importantly, I want better carrots. Forget a "per EV basis", how about a billion dollar incentive towards a solid state battery that gets 500 to 800 watt hours per kilogram and can be cut clean in half without thermal runaway, and another billion dollars if it's royalty-free? What we need is a research solution that makes EVs accessible for every type of vehicle, and tackling things at the battery manufacturing end is what will get us there.   SACHA FLEURY In short , STICKS ! Incentives are often seen by many as giveaway time the wealthy. While carrots are more positive ,most of the people that I’ve seen insisting they need to burn fossil fuels state cost as being the main driver , proper BEVs are still marginally more expensive at time of purchase for equal functionality but the price of ICE vehicles is lower because it’s practically free to pollute in many countries ... Therefore we need sticks to  (in the form of non-regressive carbon pricing) : for example , we could make it such that any new non-bev that sells for the median price of a BEV or more would require paying the cost of dealing with the environmental impact of the vehicle (say 30 to 40% of MSRP ) This cashflow then funds the climate change initiatives like charging infrastructure while customers’ purchase decision becomes a lot easier. Doing it this way (as opposed to fuel tax ) won’t impact people with lesser means  - people that can’t afford a new car in the first place.   MUNAVER I prefer the carrot approach as incentives can be offered as money off     On purchase of the car . Others like reduced stamp duty ,registration cost free parking in all paid parking lots , waiving toll road fees and further incentives when trading in ice cars for EV’s . This would make any  new ice car purchaser think hard and long before purchasing an ice car   John Fruhwirth After much deliberation, I come down on the side of using carrots versus sticks to get people to convert to EVs. My reasons are as follows: The case for the carrot It's a good idea to make the right thing to do the easy thing to do. Pleasure is a better motivator than pain. Enlightened self interest is a fabulous motivator. The case against the stick. Inflicting pain builds resentment and may lead to retribution. People are very creative when devising methods of avoiding pain. Inflicting pain is debilitating and so counter productive.   LUKE MCCArthy I would say use the carrot for consumers which will in turn drive manufacturer decision making. I think that the consumer uptake of EVs has or is moving from innovators to early adopters using the diffusion of innovation theory. The early adopters or even the early majority already know the upsides of EVs and I would expect there are only a few things holding them back from buying, one being the cost. So in this regard the carrot works best.   RICHARD FROM AUSTRALIA If it has to be one or the other, I'd have to say Stick. If we're serious about tackling the climate crisis and pollution that we've done nothing about since we discovered its impact, we need to introduce harsh measures now to get the mainstream off fossils and move to Electrification. I'd introduce a £1 extra tax on every litre of fossil fuels every calendar year from now on, including for aviation, farming and industry. I'd also remove the ability of companies to claim the cost of fossil fuels as a tax deduction.   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   What do you prefer, the carrot or the stick? It’s not as stringent as the EPA standard. The battery pack is powering 2 electric motors with a combined 225kW (306PS) output. Inside the vehicle, there are 4 sculptural bucket seats and 2 large screens. The prototype of the Tavascan concept is going to debut at this year’s IAA Frankfurt International Motor Show."   https://electrek.co/2019/09/02/vw-seat-cupra-meb-electric-suv-battery/   VOLKSWAGEN ID.R SETS RECORD ON TIANMEN MOUNTAIN The ID.R currently holds the records on Pikes Peak (USA) and at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (GB), the electric lap record on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife (D), and now the fastest time for an ascent of Tianmen Mountain in China. The car is the motorsport ambassador for the new, fully-electric range of vehicles from Volkswagen, the ID. family, the first of which – the ID.3 – will have its world premiere on 10 September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Romain Dumas (F) completed the 99 tight corners on the Tianmen Mountain road in 7:38.585 minutes – faster than ever before.     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   SHAHAD I live in an apartment with no charging access, so I primarily charge at work.  I plug in for the last few hours of the day after people start going home and chargers open up.  I only need to do this a few days a week to top off.  My work offers free charging so this works very well and I've had to stop at a paid charger once in the past 2 months of owning my EV.  This includes the extra miles I spend driving for Lyft to make the payments, since I hadn't financially been planning on upgrading until my old car unexpectedly died.  I was already EV curious, but your podcast was one of the things that pushed me over the edge on the decision to upgrade, keep up the good work!   KARL CRAMER As a renter I can't charge at home. Luckily work offers free charging, from solar power, and my gym has a nearby parking lot with free charging too. That's my morning and evening charging routine.   DOUG VOWLES Too often parameters and criteria from the gas/petrol world are overlaid on the EV world by non-EV owners, and those wishing to become EV owners. Hence the “How far can you go?” types of questions.  The reality of timely e-sips and the occasional full charge needs to be put out there.  If the new model is understood and internalized by the buying public then perhaps the need for “big range” can take a back seat to every day practicality.   JOHN CHRISTENSEN My wife and I have had our Chevy Bolt for a year in Chicago, Illinois, USA. We have a level 2 EVSE in our garage. Our charging routine changes with the season. In the spring and fall we leave our car unplugged and charge only every other week, because at that time of year the Bolt is much more efficient. But in the summer and winter we leave it plugged in. This is because in the summer our garage gets pretty hot and the Bolt needs to cool the battery and it’s best to leave it plugged in to keep the battery conditioned. Then in the winter it’s the other extreme; it gets super cold and the car then needs to be plugged in to heat the battery. Plus the range drops significantly and we want to get the most range we can then. So it changes season to season.   JONATHAN PRICE As the Zoe became our primary car 4 KW solar was not sufficient to fully power the Zoe along with household consumption, particularly in winter of course. This summer I upgraded to 8KW solar and a single Powerwall 2 battery ... a large part of which is funded by cumulative FIT payments since 2011. I’ve added a Zappi hub and extra sensors to tune the battery and car charging and consumption. With the extra solar I can run my Zoe on sunshine for much more of the year, sometimes dumping excess from the Powerwall too ... 3.5KW from Powerwall plus 3.5KW from Solar even on partly sunny days allows me to charge for free at 7KW on many days ... giving a fast - not rapid - charge boost during the day when needed. Zappi now varies charge rate automatically between about 1.4 and 7KW to avoid any unnecessary consumption from the grid. Since I had a PW2 installed in mid May my Zoe has been about 85%+ solar power   DAVID NYE Our PHEV has only around 40-45 kilometres of range on battery, so it’s pretty important to top up every night. I use off peak power and charge it after midnight. We can and sometimes do top up a little at the local shopping centre, though it’s only 3.6kW.   SACHA I’m a city dweller so no home charging like in suburbia .. - charging once a week or so at supercharger (I got parking at a location with supercharging which happens to be at a transit station). - SOC 65-85% is normally where I stop - When traveling I use superchargers only (900 mile trip every  2 weeks , L2 would make a 8h a much longer trip otherwise)   ALEX BANAHENE I started of doing full charge at home every time it got down to about  50 miles but after a year of use I’m happier now to go down to 20 miles or so. Generally this meant charging about once a week which I normally did on a Sunday.   EDUARD PERTINEZ We plug the car (a Kona EV 64kWh) almost every night. It is configured to charge from 1am to 7am and fill up to 80%. Here in Catalonia you can opt for special night tariffs that are only 8cents of Euro for kWh. Night tariffs are so cheap because nuclear fussion and wind generation at night surpasses demand. So in fact I am charging my car with recicled energy. It cannot be greener than that!   RICHARD I have a new Zoe that gets 280km between charges. I charge often as I like to park at an EV station when I shop. Tops the car off and I like the designated spot. Never abuse my stay. Win win.   JERRY ALLISON I have owned a model 3 for a year now and I charge the car whenever I can.  This is mostly at Chargepoint stations for an hour or so at a time (equates to 19MPH FREE charge).  I tend to charge if possible when I go out for dinner or lunch.  Some stations provide faster 26MPH charges and are also FREE, mostly because they are city owned and free to the public.  I charge at home about once or  twice a month.  There are 12 solar panels on my roof and they produce approx. 1400 plus watts of electricity.  And if I need to charge at home, I tend to wait for a sunny day.   MARK WESTON When I took delivery of my Hyundai kona electric Premium SE 64kwh I asked that exact question. I was told only to charge to 100% when going on long journeys  at home and on the road to 80%. At home  I charge to 80% run it down to between 20 -10% then recharge back-up. On occasions back-up to 90%. I'm currently charging around every 7-8days. Great show as all ways. The Bild am Sonntag said prosecutors were preparing charges against unnamed Volkswagen managers for suspected fraud, noting that the company had given assurances in 2016 that the 1.2 liter engines did not use illegal emissions cheating defeat devices."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/01/13/vw-diesel-emissions-recall-germany/   NISSAN E-POWER A HUGE SALES SUCCESS: WHY NOT ADD A PLUG? As it turns out, 70% of all Note sales in 2018 were Note e-Power, which would translate to over 95,000. The electric powertrain is set low within the frame to send the weight towards the ground and keep a low center of gravity." "A new feature, alien to the rest of the lineup, is the “twist and go”—since its electric, the LiveWire neither has a clutch nor a gear selector. You only have to, well, twist and go. The company has also been selling the model’s performance, with the promise of a 0-to-60 in 3.5 seconds thanks to its electric powertrain. " And yes it will charge Level 1, Level 2 or even Level 3 rapid charging. And you will need to charge it - after 59 miles. According to electric vehicle website Driving Electric, drivers who are considering taking the plunge are advised to strike now before supply bottlenecks take hold." according to the UK version of Motor1.com: "Research by the website shows that it usually takes around 10-12 weeks for a new car to be delivered, but lead times for some electric vehicles can be up to six months. The lights, outside music and inevitable slow crawl in Vegas strip traffic can remove some of the most enjoyable features of driving electric; that being the instant torque of the electric motor, the quiet cabin and smooth vibration-less acceleration." Tom Moloughney was the lucky one going for a ridealong to the desert. "The EQC is not a dedicated-platform EV. It shares many components with the C-Class and GLC line. It’s going to be manufactured on the same line as the C-Class and GLC in Daimler’s plant in Bremen, Germany. " "As for range, Mercedes has been quoting 400 km, which is based on the European WLTP range test. Shult has been driving the EQC for a while now, and knows exactly what it’s capable of. He told us of a recent trip when they drove the vehicle (normal driving not hypermiling) 228 miles and had 7% battery left." "The EQC is equipped with a 32-amp onboard charger, good for AC charging up to 7.4 kW. The car will come with a 120-volt portable EVSE in the US, and Mercedes will offer Level 2 charging options for purchase. As for DC Fast charging, the EQC will accept up to 110 kW, allowing the vehicle to charge from 10% to 80% in about 40 minutes." "The EQC has an 80 kWh battery, which we found out during the drive is the usable capacity, not the total. Americans have had a longtime love affair with the automobile. You could even say it's ingrained into our national psyche. It's not surprising, then, that this industry in which 90% of fuels are fossil-based generates 27% of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Fortunately, this high-carbon transportation model is being disrupted by the emergence of clean electric vehicles. In this episode we focus on EV chargers, a critically important but less-often discussed aspect of the EV revolution. Our guest is Mahi Reddy, the founder and CEO of SemaConnect, a national EV charger manufacturing company based in Bowie, Maryland. We begin with a discussion about why and how Mahi founded SemaConnect and continue with a wide-ranging conversation about how EV charging works; what SemaConnect's business model is and how it compares with those of other EVSE (electric vehicle supply equipment) companies; how EVs—unlike some distributed generation—are a promising source of revenue for traditional utilities; the challenges of starting and running a national company in a young industry in which the policy and regulatory landscape is evolving; and how national and state policies are shaping EV investment and growth.
