Avsnitt 248. Support us on Patreon --- In 1615, just days before the New Year, famed astronomer Johannes Kepler received the news that would change his life. His mother Katharina had been accused as a witch. Over the next 6 years, the Keplers would battle these charges with every means at their disposal, just as the world around them began to collapse into the carnage of the Thirty Years' War. Gladio Free Europe continues our foray into the dusky world of European witchcraft with our account of the witch of Katharina Kepler. Liam and Russian Sam explore how at the cusp of modernity, one of the figures most responsible for heralding changes in science and reason found himself battling against the forces of superstition. While a belief in witchcraft is now rightfully considered archaic and irrational, many people in this time attempted to reconcile theories of black magic with modern techniques of logic and rhetoric. This makes Katharina's charges, and her son's attempts to fight them, an amazing chapter of the history of both science and magic in Early Modern Europe. This episode touches on so many topics and themes explored on this podcast in previous years. The story of Katharina Kepler is a incredible skeleton key for understanding the changes that erupted out of Germany over 400 years ago and, in that bloody process, gave us the modern world.

Matt went from the couch to 18 Keplers, and a bunch of Rogaines and Barkley Marathons, in fact, Matt is the International Rogaining Association president. He was a Salomon athlete for a bit there too, and what he doesn't know about the Kepler Challenge and the lord of the race ain't worth knowing. Matt is well known for his opinions and his straight- talking style. This is a brilliant conversation with a very wise human, who is incidentally quite good at running for ages. Her newest novel “Vigil Harbor” plots current problems such as worldwide virus infections, climate change and increasing political violence as they might increase over the next twelve years, and charts their impact on a small town in coastal Massachusetts. Set in 2034, the novel includes a touch of mystery and the supernatural, and is a most enjoyable read from almost any perspective. On the show, Julia speaks about the ways climate change has shaped the novel, her experience writing with a supernatural twist for the first time, and how the book changed with the Covid-19 pandemic started.

Plausibly Live! - The Official Podcast of The Dave Bowman Show

In the 17th Century, one man had to make a choice. Should he stick to his religious dogma and ignore his own observations and computation, or accept a new reality. As a scientist, he realized that he could not ignore reality. Because of his discoveries, because he was willing to accept that his precious dogma was incorrect, the world changed. As we begin a new voyage into the universe of the US Constitution, we would be wise to keep in mind that much like Scripture, and two people can look at the identical words on a page and come to a polar opposite understanding. We must steel ourselves to study with a willingness to understand that a different point of view does not mean that another person is our enemy. it means that they have a different experience in life, a different culture or environment. It means that we have an opportunity to learn something new. And, like Kepler, we must use that new data to see if our dogmas are in line with what we observe. If they are, we strengthen our understanding. if they are not, then we have the opportunity to make a change. One based not on passions or emotions, but on truths.

Kia whanau. This week’s interesting conversation with an interesting runner is a bit different. Eugene sits down with All Blacks doctor Tony Page who gives us an insight not only into the world of high performance sport but also his own accomplished running career. He’s completed 10 Keplers, four Coast to Coasts, and competed in the tough Two Oceans ultramarathon in his homeland of South Africa. He talks about growing up in the apartheid era of South Africa, before deciding to move his family to New Zealand where they settled in Opotiki on the East Coast. It was there his love of Kiwi trails began. Tony started out as a GP before doing a Fellowship in Sports and Exercise Medicine, a career switch which has seen him be a team doctor in AFL and rugby. Tony talks about the latest in sports science thinking around hydration, as well as running the morning after the World Cup final in 2015. Delightful, thoughtful and insightful, this is a conversation we hope you’ll learn something from as well as enjoy.

See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
