It's nomination season! If you enjoy The Philip Duff Show, take a minute to throw our hat in the ring for an award that is guaranteed to annoy everyone - link to nominate us for "Best Broadcast, Podcast Or Online Video" here: https://spiritedawards.secure-platform.com/a (Nominations deadline is February 13th, at 1159pm New Orleans time!)Dolph's been a legend in Hollywood for almost forty years, from his first role in Bond movie "A View To a Kill", to his breakthrough as Ivan Drago in "Rocky IV", and more recently in "The Expendables", "Creed II" and as King Nereus in the "Aquaman" movies. But he also graduated #1 in his class in the masters' degree program in Chemical Engineering, won scholarships in that subject all over the world (including a Fulbright Scholarship to MIT), was a European and Australian karate champion, and - as we hear - almost became a boxer when he first moved to New York.  After two long days of me teaching Dolph mixology, we sat down in West Hollywood over a couple of glasses of the new vodka brand that Dolph and his wife Emma are launching in a month or so (and that I'm helping with), and talked about how he got into acting, why it's no fun to spend your weekends punching Australians, and how he still does a kata every morning, among a whole lot more. This was a lot of fun and we're going to tape a muuuch longer episode next month, after the vodka launch.  Enjoy!Dolph on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dolphlundgren/?hl=enDolph on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dolph-lundgren-68983432a  Get in touch with Duff!Podcast business enquiries: consulting@liquidsolutions.org (PR friends: we're only interested in having your client on if they can talk for a couple of hours about OTHER things than their prepared speaking points or their new thing, whatever that is, for a few hours. On this month's episode, we're looking at the TWO films that Lundgren closed out 2023 with -- Showdown at the Grand and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom! Each of these films couldn't be more different from one another, but considering Dolph took on supporting roles in each (not to mention wearing a wild wig for each performance!), I figured it was fitting to tackle both movies in this one episode! In Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Dolph returns to the troubled DC Extended Universe for its final outing as King Nereus, a proud Atlantean King who assists the titular superhero in retaining his throne against comic book nemesis, Black Manta! In Showdown at the Grand, Lundgren stars as an aged action star who teams up with a movie theater proprietor to fight and keep the sanctity of cinema intact! Joining me to discuss these two efforts are TWO regulars -- Chris Prentice and David Rosen! First up is our Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom discussion in which David Rosen from Piecing it Together invited me back on his show to chat the Christmas 2023 blockbuster release! After Chris Prentice joins me to chat the Quentin Tarantino-inspired tribute to grindhouse cinema, Showdown at the Grand! This month we're chatting a huge budget release and a small indie release… Dolph himself is no stranger to both arenas! On this month's episode, we close out the "2018 -- Lundgrenaissance" and take a look at the latest DC comic book adaptation, Aquaman, currently in theaters (and still crushing it at the box office)!  In this underwater adventure, Jason Momoa stars as Arthur Curry, a.k.a. Aquaman, a half-man / half-Atlantian who battles his evil half-brother Orm for the title as King of Atlantis.  Dolph Lundgren takes on a supporting role as King Nereus, an Atlantian king whose loyalties teeter between both both prospective heirs to the throne as a full-on oceanic war erupts!  Joining the show once again is my buddy Chris Prentice!  How is it that the one superhero who's always been a punchline is now the one who's leading the DCEU films?  How does Lundgren do at playing a king (surprisingly, a first in his career)?  Is too much CGI a good thing or a bad thing?  And just how amazing is Lundgren's entrance in the film?  Join Chris and I as we take a deep dive into Aquaman! Major thanks to Chris Prentice for joining me!  Please feel free to rate and review the show on iTunes, Stitcher, or wherever you go subscribe!

On this episode of The Harold & Maudecast hosts Sarah Mason and Jake Essoe review AQUAMAN in theaters and BIRD BOX, now streaming on Netflix. It's been a long time coming since we got our first glimpse of Jason Momoa as AQUAMAN to seeing James Wan's (THE CONJURING) vision play out on the big screen. This origin story is visually thrilling and manages to keep the cheese to a minimum -- let's face it, AQUAMAN was always cheesey. But James Wan does an amazing job world building and staying true to the protector of the deep's comic narratives. Best thing Zack Snyder did for the DCU was to cast Jason Momoa as Aquaman. Momoa was born to play this role and it just makes sense. Alongside him as mom, Nicole Kidman, Queen Atlanna shows her strength right out of the films credits kicking some underwater storm troopers asses. Amber Heard's Mera proves a worthy ass kicker as well though the chemistry between Momoa and Heard was missing. Patrick Wilson plays a mean Orm/Ocean Master and our favorite, who SPOILER alert, may prove the bigger foe in the sequel was Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta. Willem Dafoe as Vulko was Aquaman's Obi-Wan and Dolph Lundgren (yes please!) has a bigger role than we expected (thank you!) as Mera's father King Nereus. We unpack all this in more in the podcast. Bonus! BIRD BOX, now streaming on Netflix became the most watched ever when over 45 million accounts streamed the Sandra Bullock horror/thriller over the Christmas break, according to Netflix who never release their stats. Directed by Susan Bier (IN A BETTER WORLD), screenplay adapted by Eric Heisserer from Josh Malerman's novel, BIRD BOX joins A QUIET PLACE in this new niche of apocalyptic horror, this time sight challenged vs. sound. There are unknown creatures who have invaded the world and if you get a good look at them, you're F*CKED! Bullock's character, Malorie who happens to be 8.5 months pregnant, finds her way to a house occupied by a group of other survivors including another 8.5 month pregnant woman Olympia played by Danielle McDonald (PATTI CAKE$). The odd but impressive cast mash up includes, Sarah Paulsen, Trevantes Rhodes Lil Rel Howery, Tom Hollander, Machine Gun Kelly, Jacki Weaver and the always cool John Malkovich. BIRD BOX is suspenseful, sporadically really gory, and a bit tragic. It feels a little bit like Season 1 of The Walking Dead, and that ain't bad. Bullock proves she can concur any genre. Hopefully there is a sequel in the works. For more episodes and reviews visit www.thehmcnetwork.com

TVLine spoke with newcomer Juliana Harkavy about whipping herself into crimefighting shape, the secret to the Canary Cry, Dinah's dynamic with her teammates and the prospect of a showdown with her predecessor's devious doppelganger. The statue features Diana in an action-ready pose, bracing for combat with her sword and shield in hand. The base suggests it will interlock with other statues, though on its own is rather boring. Still, the lush reds and rich golds and blues are stunning, and Kotobukiya always excels at sculpting hair. The statue also holds a well-crafted resemblance to Gal Gadot, who has her trademark golden lasso at her side. Wonder Woman will retail for 13,800 Yen, which translates to about $124 USD. She is shipping sometime in July of 2017. Rucka took to his Tumblr to tell fans that he would be leaving the title due to the strain of the twice-monthly schedule. Identifying it as his last issue on the title "for the time being," Rucka advised fans against assuming the worst and wrote, "I just can't maintain the pace on the title while also fulfilling my commitments to my other collaborators. It is, genuinely, as simple as that." Shortly thereafter, Sharp took to Facebook to confirm that he, too, would be leaving the title -- but cryptically teasing that he wouldn't be going too far. Fontana has signed on to write five issues of the twice-monthly series for the heroine, beginning with July's No. 26, with a storyline that will introduce a new villain into the DC Universe. The move comes fresh off the success of her DC Super Hero Girls work. The artist for Fontana's first two issues will be Mirka Andolfo, whose work has previously appeared in the DC Comics: Bombshells series. Fontana and Andolfo's first issue of Wonder Woman, No. 26, will be released in comic stores and digitally July 12, with No. 27 to be released July 26.
