Enterprise Knowledge COO Joe Hilger speaks with Austin Kronz, Director of Data Strategy at Atlan. Atlan is the active metadata platform for the modern data stack. In their conversation, Austin delves into how Atlan positions itself as a “home for data teams,” designed to centralize, automate, and streamline data governance and access. Austin explains that Atlan aims to address the complex needs of today's expanded data teams—ranging from engineers to business analysts—by providing a platform that adapts to various roles and workflows, fostering an environment where all data users can access trusted, well-documented data. Austin highlights the challenges of managing increasingly complex data ecosystems, especially for large enterprises dealing with fragmented and siloed data sources. Atlan tackles these issues by embedding data catalog functionalities directly into the workflows of business intelligence tools, allowing users to access metadata seamlessly without leaving their dashboards. By focusing on transparency, flexibility, and automation, Atlan helps organizations build trust in their data assets, ensuring that users can rely on accurate and contextually relevant data. The discussion also explores how Atlan leverages AI to automate metadata documentation, minimizing the manual burden on data stewards. Austin emphasizes Atlan's commitment to adaptability, positioning the platform as a control plane for data and AI. This forward-looking approach aims to empower organizations to make data-driven decisions effectively while supporting the evolving needs of knowledge management and data governance.
Summary Maintaining a single source of truth for your data is the biggest challenge in data engineering. Different roles and tasks in the business need their own ways to access and analyze the data in the organization. In order to enable this use case, while maintaining a single point of access, the semantic layer has evolved as a technological solution to the problem. In this episode Artyom Keydunov, creator of Cube, discusses the evolution and applications of the semantic layer as a component of your data platform, and how Cube provides speed and cost optimization for your data consumers. Your host is Tobias Macey and today I'm interviewing Artyom Keydunov about the role of the semantic layer in your data platform Interview Introduction How did you get involved in the area of data management? Can you start by outlining the technical elements of what it means to have a "semantic layer"? In the past couple of years there was a rapid hype cycle around the "metrics layer" and "headless BI", which has largely faded. Can you give your assessment of the current state of the industry around the adoption/implementation of these concepts? What are the benefits of having a discrete service that offers the business metrics/semantic mappings as opposed to implementing those concepts as part of a more general system? (e.g. dbt, BI, warehouse marts, etc.) At what point does it become necessary/beneficial for a team to adopt such a service? What are the challenges involved in retrofitting a semantic layer into a production data system? evolution of requirements/usage patterns technical complexities/performance and cost optimization What are the most interesting, innovative, or unexpected ways that you have seen Cube used? What are the most interesting, unexpected, or challenging lessons that you have learned while working on Cube? When is Cube/a semantic layer the wrong choice? What do you have planned for the future of Cube? Contact Info LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/keydunov/) keydunov (https://github.com/keydunov) on GitHub Parting Question From your perspective, what is the biggest gap in the tooling or technology for data management today? This time, we look at a character we missed first time round, the leader of the Space Rats gang, Atlan.
To tie in with the recent release of Aquaman & the Lost Kingdom, we take a look at the man himself, Arthur Curry! We have a whale of a time with this one, and we'll cod to making more than a few fish jokes just for the halibut... Issue 186 - Aquaman Intro Shoutout to Into the Knight, who got a thank you from Jed McKay in the last page of Moon Knight #30 Background (4:29) Aquaman (Arthur Curry) created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger in More Fun Comics #73 (Nov. 1941) Golden Age origin is he is the son of a scientist who lived in the ocean and taught him how to breathe underwater and communicate with & control undersea life Silver Age origin: Arthur Curry, son of Tom Curry & Atlanna, and because of his mixed heritage he has access to several Atlantean abilities, including how to breathe underwater and communicate with & control undersea life This version introduces most of his supporting cast: wife Mera, son Arthur Jr., aka AJ or Aquababy, half-brother & nemesis Ocean Master, Black Manta, and others Post-Crisis origin: Orin, son of Queen Atlanna & the wizard Atlan, he was abandoned by Atlantis and discovered by Tom Curry who eventually dies when he's a teen, and he returns to Atlantis where he is imprisoned before breaking out and joining the Justice League, where he uses his abilities like how to breathe underwater and communicate with & control undersea life This is the version that loses his hand after it's eaten by piranhas He is the leader of Sub Diego, an undersea version of San Diego He becomes the Dweller of the Depths to assist the new Aquaman, Arthur Joseph Curry, before dying and later resurrected during Blackest Night/Brightest Day New 52 - Once again the son of Tom Curry & Atlanna, he was raised on land but aware of Atlantis, and when he returns to the sea he is crowned King, but he abdicates to be with Mera and join the Justice League until he's forced to return to rule over Atlantis despite half the population hating him He finally proposes to Mera at the start of DC Rebirth Issues - Theme is fish out of water, then in, then out, then in… (10:34) Reluctant ruler of Atlantis - numerous time he returns to the throne in times of trouble, only to either vacate willingly to help Justice League/other heroes, or be forced to abdicate due to various factors Walks two worlds, but not fully accepted in either (15:36) Loss of a son - created strain on him and Mera (31:47) Break (42:02) Plugs for Last Sons of Krypton & SNEScapades Treatment (43:50) In-universe - Build a safe space for Aquaman Out of universe - (46:56) Skit (53:35) Hello Aquaman, I'm Dr. Issues. Would you prefer…um Arthur? Orin? Your chart has some conflicting information, and my electronic health record merges files quite haphazardly. - Doctor, you can just stick to Aquaman for now then. Most land acquaintances do. Do they now? Ok. So, what can I do for you? -I'm in a state of flux. I'm trying to keep on course. The problem is, I don't have a map. Are you speaking metaphorically, or is this some sort of buried treasure -*snapping* I don't make puns and I need you to take this seriously. *gulp* My apologies. So, how did you get so lost? -I'm not sure. I have a lot of people counting on me, but when they all ask for help at once they're like crabs in a barrel. They're too quick to lionize me as their savior, and too quick to denigrate me as a fake. I'll admit, that sounds like injustice, and I don't mean that from a dramatic perspective. The world hasn't always been fair to you, has it? -Maybe not, but I can't complain too much. There's no breathing room. *clears throat* pardon, but I need to drink some water. Sure, go right *sound of a tidal wave or something* …ahead. Um, did you have to soak the whole couch? -My kingdom is good for it. You don't mind barnacles, right? Barnacles, no, but the jellyfish - *ignores* Anyway, my kingdom…*sigh* it's not always my kingdom. Sometimes I want to swim away and never see any of them again. But I won't abandon my family. Priorities. Got it. You sound like you have a lot of triggers that could exacerbate anxiety and/or depression. Have you experienced any of those symptoms? -Well I'm not the one with the degree, but if you're referencing eternal sadness, sleepless nights, the sense of dread that your society will be wiped out, and those who know of you before you know them are willing to kill everyone you love for the sake of power so you let your own sense of pride burst forth into a fit of rage that only the mightiest of beings can come CLOSE to matching *clearly exasperated but trying to calm down* perhaps…I have. I won't snap to judgment on diagnosis, but you don't need any labels. Sounds like you've had stuff going on for a looooong time. What led you to come to me now? -I'm not sure. You've said that more than once. -And I've meant it every time. This is the only place I can use a phrase like that and not die. Mostly right, sometimes wrong, but never in doubt. A real Type A mindset. -If that makes the most sense to you, then yes. I'm a buffer zone. That can work, but ultimately you're going to have to find a way to recreate that in other environments. -Tricky to do when the natural state of those environments are hostile. Are they really, though? I'm not saying you're wrong, just challenging the assumption. - There's a not-insignificant portion of my kingdom who believes I was cursed the moment I was born. There's also a large segment who wishes I would vacate the throne and never return. Not surprisingly, those two segments share a healthy overlap. So when the very people I aim to lead don't want me in the leadership role, I think it's fair to say it's a hostile environment. And that's ignoring the numerous attempts on my life, the never-ending struggle with my half-brother, the various threats from the surface world… Then you need a huge amount of resiliency, and that doesn't get built in a vacuum. You mentioned family as your number one priority. Are they integrated into how you process your life, or are they delicate figures you keep sheltered in your mind so you don't lose them? -I would never refer to them as delicate or sheltered. But I don't make my personal life a spectacle either. Mera is everything to me…sometimes the only thing. It's okay to want more than that. -I don't need more. I specifically didn't say need. I said want. Aspirations that are your own, even in the midst of external values. -That is such a land dweller thing to say. I confess my biases, yes. But I'm acknowledging your culture as well. I'll have to learn on the fly how to blend your understanding of how the world works with my own. I embrace that challenge. -*pause* How far are you willing to go? I don't know…that's really vague, and I know that type of question is leading to some discomfort -*boldly* NO whining! You may be granted a privilege that will change your life, If you are a brave soul. See, I'm a coward, so -*dismissive* Nonsense! You just need some basic skills. Can you swim? Yes. -Can you hold your breath for at least 2 minutes? What? I don't know…probably? But if you're alluding to what I think you are, I don't think my freediving skills are up to par. -We're not simpletons. We have equipment; you need to be fit enough for the transition. And this benefits YOU in what way. -If I can show you just how unique our ways are, then you would be able to not only assist me, but also those who question my position. Expand your practice. Can you give me some time to mull this over? I'm not used to someone actually getting so gung ho about my sessions. -I won't wait forever. If you need to seek council from those who would put your mind at ease, then I understand. You will hear from me shortly. Ending (59:57) Recommended reading: Peter David run, with focus on Time & Tide and the Atlantis Chronicles Next episodes: Echo, Speedball, Deathstroke Plugs for social & GonnaGeek Network Anthony: That will do it for this episode. Doc? Doc: *text message sound* Hold on…it's Aquaman? Huh…'thanks for the introductory session. I know I told you I would contact you shortly, but I am so excited that I did a search on therapy techniques. I think you'll understand my world better if you engage in flooding. This is NOT a request.” What the hell does that mean? I just go to the beach or the aquarium and *water rushing/waves crashing* *gurgling* I guess I should try to keep my head above water for now Anthony: He didn't have to be so dramatic. Summary Data systems are inherently complex and often require integration of multiple technologies. Orchestrators are centralized utilities that control the execution and sequencing of interdependent operations. This offers a single location for managing visibility and error handling so that data platform engineers can manage complexity. In this episode Nick Schrock, creator of Dagster, shares his perspective on the state of data orchestration technology and its application to help inform its implementation in your environment. Your host is Tobias Macey and today I'm welcoming back Nick Schrock to talk about the state of the ecosystem for data orchestration Interview Introduction How did you get involved in the area of data management? Can you start by defining what data orchestration is and how it differs from other types of orchestration systems? (e.g. container orchestration, generalized workflow orchestration, etc.) What are the misconceptions about the applications of/need for/cost to implement data orchestration? How do those challenges of customer education change across roles/personas? Because of the multi-faceted nature of data in an organization, how does that influence the capabilities and interfaces that are needed in an orchestration engine? You have been working on Dagster for five years now. How have the requirements/adoption/application for orchestrators changed in that time? One of the challenges for any orchestration engine is to balance the need for robust and extensible core capabilities with a rich suite of integrations to the broader data ecosystem. What are the factors that you have seen make the most influence in driving adoption of a given engine? What are the most interesting, innovative, or unexpected ways that you have seen data orchestration implemented and/or used? What are the most interesting, unexpected, or challenging lessons that you have learned while working on data orchestration? When is a data orchestrator the wrong choice? What do you have planned for the future of orchestration with Dagster? Contact Info @schrockn (https://twitter.com/schrockn) on Twitter LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/schrockn) Parting Question From your perspective, what is the biggest gap in the tooling or technology for data management today?

My guest today is Prukalpa Sankar, co-founder of Atlan. Atlan is one of the most exciting SaaS businesses in India and PK was the perfect guest to dive deep into what's going on in the Indian ecosystem. When we think about startups, consumer startups at large have experienced a major shift over the years, going from low-hanging-fruit services businesses to more challenging X for Y companies, to building natively for India's use cases. SaaS and Enterprise have taken a different motion. SaaS companies in India are not just building for the domestic market, but for the global market. In this conversation, we covered all things SaaS, why India's hit an inflection point, and what the downstream implications of building great SaaS companies for Indian society are. Summary Making effective use of data requires proper context around the information that is being used. As the size and complexity of your organization increases the difficulty of ensuring that everyone has the necessary knowledge about how to get their work done scales exponentially. Wikis and intranets are a common way to attempt to solve this problem, but they are frequently ineffective. Rehgan Avon co-founded AlignAI to help address this challenge through a more purposeful platform designed to collect and distribute the knowledge of how and why data is used in a business. In this episode she shares the strategic and tactical elements of how to make more effective use of the technical and organizational resources that are available to you for getting work done with data. Your host is Tobias Macey and today I'm being interviewed by Scott Hirleman about my work on the podcasts and my experience building a data platform Interview Introduction How did you get involved in the area of data management? Data platform building journey Why are you building, who are the users/use cases How to focus on doing what matters over cool tools How to build a good UX Anything surprising or did you discover anything you didn't expect at the start How to build so it's modular and can be improved in the future General build vs buy and vendor selection process Obviously have a good BS detector - how can others build theirs So many tools, where do you start - capability need, vendor suite offering, etc. Anything surprising in doing much of this at once How do you think about TCO in build versus buy Any advice Guest call out Be brave, believe you are good enough to be on the show Look at past episodes and don't pitch the same as what's been on recently And vendors, be smart, work with your customers to come up with a good pitch for them as guests... Tobias' advice and learnings from building out a data platform: Advice: when considering a tool, start from what are you actually trying to do. Yes, everyone has tools they want to use because they are cool (or some resume-driven development). Once you have a potential tool, is the capabilty you want to use a unloved feature or a main part of the product. If it's a feature, will they give it the care and attention it needs? Advice: lean heavily on open source. You can fix things yourself and better direct the community's work than just filing a ticket and hoping with a vendor. Learning: there is likely going to be some painful pieces missing, especially around metadata, as you build out your platform. Advice: build in a modular way and think of what is my escape hatch? Yes, you have to lock yourself in a bit but build with the possibility of a vendor or a tool going away - whether that is your choice (e.g. too expensive) or it literally disappears (anyone remember FoundationDB?). Learning: be prepared for tools to connect with each other but the connection to not be as robust as you want. Again, be prepared to have metadata challenges especially. Advice: build your foundation to be strong. This will limit pain as things evolve and change. You can't build a large building on a bad foundation - or at least it's a BAD idea... Advice: spend the time to work with your data consumers to figure out what questions they want to answer. Then abstract that to build to general challenges instead of point solutions. Learning: it's easy to put data in S3 but it can be painfully difficult to query it. There's a missing piece as to how to store it for easy querying, not just the metadata issues. Advice: it's okay to pay a vendor to lessen pain. But becoming wholly reliant on them can put you in a bad spot. Advice: look to create paved path / easy path approaches. If someone wants to follow the preset path, it's easy for them. If they want to go their own way, more power to them, but not the data platform team's problem if it isn't working well. Learning: there will be places you didn't expect to bend - again, that metadata layer for Tobias - to get things done sooner. It's okay to not have the end platform built at launch, move forward and get something going. Advice: "one of the perennial problems in technlogy is the bias towards speed and action without necessarily understanding the destination." Really consider the path and if you are creating a scalable and maintainable solution instead of pushing for speed to deliver something. Advice: consider building a buffer layer between upstream sources so if there are changes, it doesn't automatically break things downstream. Tobias' data platform components: data lakehouse paradigm, Airbyte for data integration (chosen over Meltano), Trino/Starburst Galaxy for distributed querying, AWS S3 for the storage layer, AWS Glue for very basic metadata cataloguing, Dagster as the crucial orchestration layer, dbt Contact Info LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/scotthirleman/) Parting Question From your perspective, what is the biggest gap in the tooling or technology for data management today? Summary One of the reasons that data work is so challenging is because no single person or team owns the entire process. This introduces friction in the process of collecting, processing, and using data. In order to reduce the potential for broken pipelines some teams have started to adopt the idea of data contracts. In this episode Abe Gong brings his experiences with the Great Expectations project and community to discuss the technical and organizational considerations involved in implementing these constraints to your data workflows. Metadata is the lifeblood of your data platform, providing information about what is happening in your systems. A variety of platforms have been developed to capture and analyze that information to great effect, but they are inherently limited in their utility due to their nature as storage systems. In order to level up their value a new trend of active metadata is being implemented, allowing use cases like keeping BI reports up to date, auto-scaling your warehouses, and automated data governance. In this episode Prukalpa Sankar joins the show to talk about the work she and her team at Atlan are doing to push this capability into the mainstream.
It's easy to get sucked into the "technology" side of things when it comes to improving the effectiveness and scaling up data teams, but, much to Tim's dismay, shoring up the people, process, and culture is often just as (if not more) critical. So, sure, we can talk about the modern data stack, but what about the modern data CULTURE stack? Prukalpa Sankar, co-founder of Atlan, joined us for a lively discussion of the topic! Prukalpa also co-founded SocialCops, a data for good company behind landmark projects such as India's National Data Platform. Prukalpa is a recognized industry leader, landing on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list and Fortune's 40 Under 40.In this episode, Prukalpa and Sam discuss how diversity is a data team's biggest strength, why governance isn't always a bad thing, and what they hope the modern data stack will look like in 5 years.-------------------“Diversity is our biggest strength but our biggest weakness, because it's really hard to make that team collaborate. Because most of the teams in the world are very uniform. So when every single person in the room is a subject matter expert on something, nobody else actually can have oversight on each other's work because they've never done it before. Then how do you create true trust? How do you create trust when things are breaking? If you're able to create a way for these diverse people to collaborate really effectively, to be a dream team, a dream data team where they trust each other and they can collaborate effectively, then magic can happen.” – Prukalpa Sankar-------------------Episode Timestamps:[01:55]: What open source data means to Prukalpa[05:38]: Prukalpa's journey to data for good movement[04:51]: How Prukalpa and her team provided gas to 80 million Indian women[06:33]: How diversity can help a data team succeed[15:10]: What gives Atlan its magic[18:58]: How being open by default influenced Atlan's architecture choices[22:45]: The reality of the modern data stack in 5 years[27:36]: Advice for people getting started with DataOps-------------------Links:LinkedIn - Connect with PrukalpaLinkedIn - Connect with AtlanTwitter - Follow PrukalpaTwitter - Follow AtlanVisit Atlan
