GETTING IT BACK: THE STORY OF CYMANDE lovingly recounts the journey of Cymande, a group of Black British musicians who all came to the U.K. from the Caribbean as children, released three brilliant albums in quick succession in the early 1970s and were embraced in the USA. But in the U.K., they faced a music business beset by prejudice against homegrown Black talent and were largely ignored. They originally split in 1975, but their music lived on, as successive generations of artists and fans found and embraced their songs. Hip Hop, House, Drum and Bass, R&B, Rare Groove, and crate-digging communities all saw something in the songs of Cymande that inspired them. Through insightful interviews with band members and influential figures including Mark Ronson, Laura Lee and Mark Speer (Khruangbin), DJ Maseo (De La Soul), Jazzie B (Soul II Soul), Cut Chemist, Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Louie Vega, and Kool DJ Red Alert, this stranger than fiction documentary explores the band's profound impact and enduring legacy. Director Tim MacKenzie-Smith stops by to talk about his own introduction to the music of Cymande, designing the look and feel of the film to seen as a big screen communal experience, how the band members kept each others hope, music and spirit alive over the years, and the joy of seeing the band and their music get the recognition it deserves. Hitting the airwaves on WHBI in New York City in 1979, In 1979, Mr. Magic's “Disco Showcase” debuted on WHBI in New York City. Mr. Magic had no way of knowing that his so-called disco showcase would become the very first hip-hop radio show. With his DJ Marley Marl, Mr. Magic became the voice of the streets – though that title didn't come without competition. A rivalry began to brew between Magic and Kool DJ Red Alert. In this episode, listeners will learn about the deep rivalry between these two radio crews, the legacy that it left behind, and how Mr. Magic changed the course of Black radio and hip-hop forever.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This podcast begins with an introduction to Hip Hop by the one and only DJ Grand Master Caz, followed by three interviewees speaking about the founder of Hip Hop, DJ Kool Herc! These remarks are provided by Caz, Christie Z, and Kool DJ Red Alert. You will also hear from other pioneering DJs from New York including GrandMaster Flash and GrandWizzard Theodore. Join us and our very special guest musician, curator of culture, and frontman of the Lyrical Groove, Kendrick Dial.
Many people, especially in the time before the internet, depended on the radio to hear new music, or any music for that matter, for the most part. For me, growing up on military bases, specifically in Germany most of my childhood, radio wasn't an option unless I wanted to hear Top 40. Once I heard Hip Hop, and my vow to "find everything that sounds like this", I heavily relied on trading and dubbing tapes with fellow music lovers and enthusiasts, and the most prized possessions of the 80s...tapes of New York Radio. There's a list of amazing, impacting, pioneering, and influential shows/DJs that come to mind, such as; Mr. Magic, Marley, Zulu Beats with Afrika Islam, The World Famous Supreme Team Show, Kool DJ Red Alert, Chuck Chillout, Awesome Two, Vandy C and Bill Blast, Awesome 2, and so on. This episode details those days, the passion and struggle to track down the latest tapes, and meeting all sorts of challenges along the way. And, eventually focuses on the radio station tapes that I most often got my hands on; WBLS and 98.7 Kiss FM, two rival New York stations. I also touch on a few other key radio shows that I was able to get tapes of or hear live, in the 80s, including Lady B and Mimi Brown in Philly, Electrifying Mojo, The Wizard a.k.a Jeff Mills, WKKC in Galesburg, and WNUR in Chicago. This is a re-upload of my conversation with the late great Mark Stewart Rest In Power! For those who don't know Mark Stewart is an artist, vocalist, producer and songwriter from Bristol. As a founding member of The Pop Group and as a soloist, Stewart has remained an anarchic and pioneering figure since the punk era, a constant source of discordance amongst the frontiers of post-punk, dub, industrial and electronic music. In a body of work driven by an explosive form of lyricism and inspired by radical politics, protest movements, theory, philosophy, technology, art and poetry, Stewart has fearlessly cultivated a revelatory collision of ideas, ideals and influences throughout an indisputably ground-breaking and seditious career. Empowered by the DIY incentives of punk Stewart initiated The Pop Group in 1977, subsequently producing some of the most original and combative music of both the post-punk and contemporary era. From 1977 until 1980 Stewart led the charge in a group that completely eschewed punk's formalism for something far greater. Producing epiphanic, irrepressible anthems, including She's Beyond Good & Evil and We Are All Prostitutes, both in 1979, as well as masterful, seminal albums including Y in 1979 and For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder? in 1980, The Pop Group ignited the revolutionary aesthetic potential of post-punk. The impact of this first incarnation left an immensely significant legacy ultimately leading to the group's reformation in 2010. With 2015's refined return Citizen Zombie and 2016's audacious left-turn Honeymoon On Mars, the group emphatically renewed their relevance, proving as incendiary as ever. Stewart continues to operate as a crucial impetus in the bands ongoing mission. In 1980 Stewart embarked on his solo career inspired by the sounds he had heard during a visit to New York the same year. The virtuosic scratching and early hip hop propagated by Kiss FM's Kool DJ Red Alert, coupled with the impact of a pile driver at a construction site Stewart happened to encounter there, was enough to encourage his visionary next step. In 1982 Stewart consolidated these encounters into coherent possibilities, forming a group called The Maffia and linking up with producer Adrian Sherwood and his cutting edge label On-U Sound. Alongside a rotating cast of session players, initially comprised of members of African Head Charge, Creation Rebel & Dub Syndicate, and later made up of Doug Wimbish, Keith LeBlanc and Skip McDonald (the erstwhile rhythm section of The Sugarhill Gang) Stewart & The Maffia fashioned an abrasive confection of dub reggae, early hip hop and industrial noise that was shattering, seismic and completely ahead of its time. Headed by an iconic version of William Blake's eponymous ancient poem, Stewart & The Maffia unveiled the Jerusalem EP in 1982, swiftly followed by their cult 1983 LP Learning To Cope With Cowardice. Stewart later moved to Mute Records in 1985 for the ferocious proto-industrial militancy of As The Veneer of Democracy Starts to Fade and successive appearances on the label continued to break untold new ground, from 1987's Mark Stewart to 1990's Metatron and 1995's Control Data. Stewart has continued to plot an utterly uncompromising and individual course into the 2000s, with a streak of solo material that has included Edit, The Politics of Envy, The Exorcism of Envy and Experiments. Preserving his vociferous energy and defiant stance whilst advancing, as always, into unfamiliar territories, this work bears all the traces of Stewart's enduring severity and modernism, an exploratory power reinforced by a host of legendary collaborators and artistic descendants including the likes of Primal Scream, Keith Levene (Public Image Ltd / The Clash), Richard Hell, Kenneth Anger, Daddy G (Massive Attack), Lee ‘Scratch' Perry, The Bug, Kahn (Kahn & Neek, Young Echo) and Factory Floor. Stewart continues to exert an inestimable impact on a disparate range of ensuing artists and scenes. His work has been acknowledged and celebrated as a vital inspiration by the likes of Nick Cave, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem), Tricky, Massive Attack, St Vincent and countless others, while his eye for unorthodox extremity has instigated myriad new evolutions, blueprinting industrial, trip-hop, noise-hop, dance-punk and many other subsequent conceptions. Through a staunch, unrelenting desire to confront, deconstruct and make anew, Stewart has become of the most influential and forward-looking luminaries of post-punk, or indeed, any other form of music. An artist often imitated but never bettered. Mark's Info https://www.markstewartmusic.com/ https://www.facebook.com/markstewartm...
Hip-hop is a rose that grew from concrete. And there's no other place it could have grown than the fertile soil of the South Bronx. At the beginning of the 20th Century, urban planning destroyed neighborhoods and led to white flight, and tall high-density towers re-arranged the landscape of the borough. Around the same time, a massive wave of Caribbean immigrants and Black Southerners were migrating to the South Bronx, leading to a convergence of cultures that would light a spark for the birth of hip-hop in the summer of 1973.Hip-hop is turning 50 this year. So, for Black History Month, Into America is presenting “Street Disciples: Politics, Power, and the Rise of Hip-Hop.” Trymaine Lee is looking back on the political conditions and policies that have inspired half a century of hip-hop, and how over time, hip-hop began to shape America. On part one of “Street Disciples,” how the concrete jungle of New York in the 1970s led to the birth and spread of hip-hop. Trymaine is joined by: Kool DJ Red Alert, DJ Grandwizzard Theodore, historian Mark Anthony Neal, sociologist Tricia Rose, and journalist Davey D.Follow and share the show on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, using the handle @intoamericapod.Thoughts? Welcome to Riff On This, a podcast about all the great music happening in and around our community. Hip-hop and rap music have roots in Brooklyn and for Deejay Lyvwyr, that's where his dream of being a successful DJ began. Lyvwyr grew up on Nostrand Avenue above a tailor shop that rap legends would frequent to have their suits tailored. He recalls the day one of hip-hop's pioneers, Doug E. Fresh, pulled up to the shop and his own excitement to run downstairs to see if he could get an autograph for his collection. “I was 10 years old and I run downstairs to get his autograph for my book and he signs it, but unlike every other celebrity I've ever met, he stops and talks to me,” Lyvwyr said. That day, the “Original Human Beatbox” gave more than just an autograph, he gave young Lyvwyr advice on how to achieve his goal of being successful in music and entertainment. A piece of the advice was to do well in school, but what the rapper didn't realize was that he would see this boy again. “That's the day I knew this is what I was supposed to be doing,” Lyvwyr said. Lyvwyr had quite a few people to motivate him along the way — like Kool DJ Red Alert, Funk Master Flex, DJ Marley Mal, Angie Martinez and Special K from The Awesome Two, who ended up being a close mentor. Fast forward 20 years, which included eight years in the Army and a college degree, Lyvwyr meets up with Doug E. Fresh again. By this time, Lyvwyr was a seasoned DJ. It was November 2011. Pat Nix from Frontline Promotions hired Lyvwyr to do a show with Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick and Big Daddy Kane. It was classic weekend and rapper Heavy D had just passed away a little over a week prior to the show. Lyvwyr took to the stage and proceeded to play an entire set dedicated to Heavy D. “I thought ‘Well, they're either going to like or not,'” Lyvwyr said. As he walked off the stage, Doug grabbed Lyvwyr's arm and tells him he wants to talk once his set is done. Lyvwyr's gut feeling to play the Heavy D set that night proved to be a good decision. What he learned that night was Heavy D was like a brother to Doug and his passing had weighed heavily during the days leading up to classic weekend. Check out Lyvwyr's playlist here: https://bit.ly/3wnXwRh

Unknown to many, except for a few in the rap industry’s inner circle Pure Dynamite got a taste of the spotlight when he collaborated with DJ Mark The 45 King on a demo called “Scratch of Fury” in late 1986, which became a local hit in the New York/ New Jersey area and prompted The Awesome Two, Special K, and Teddy Ted to play it on a weekly radio show in New York on 105.9 WNWK. During the summer of 1987 Dynamite soon recorded a second demo”Untouchable”. Soon the demo came to the attention of Kool DJ Red Alert, who played it on his then Saturday night rap show on 98.7 KISS FM in New York City. Fast forward to 2004 Pure Dynamite is behind the boards producing two songs for Pace Won on his album, TELEPATHY. The songs he produced for Pace “You Ain’t Really Down” and “Love Me Baby” instantly landed the album in THE SOURCE magazine as one of the top underground rap albums of 2004. In 2006 as CEO of Times Square Entertainment, Pure Dynamite inked his first record deal with the New Jersey-based record label Gossip Records. Now in 2013 his latest CD PORNO CIRCUS is scheduled to drop later this year on his label imprint TIMES SQUARE. A concept album with 11 songs that he wrote, produced and mixed himself. His current single and video “Lapdance With You”(featuring Michael K. Success and LA) is at 58,614 views on youtube. His controversial next single “Bisexuality” (featuring Quinsessa) is a future club banger as well. Dynamite’s musical influences are Soul, Jazz, Disco, and the Old School pioneers who started Hip-Hop. “I wanted to put a few tracks together”, Dynamite says. “Give the fans something different than what they’ve been hearing these days”.
A legend and pioneer in the game, Kool DJ Red Alert took time out to speak with the Radio Boys (C.Truth, Kev Lawrence). Uncle Red talked about: why he's a B.U.M., his passion as a DJ, ushering in talent like: KRS-One, A Tribe called Quest, Jungle Brothers, Chris Lighty to name a few, how to read a crowd, what he considers a complete DJ, how hip hop has brought together different genres, the person responsible for his career, musical family ties, the moment he knew it was his time to shine, thoughts on DJs who fake it, why you should not request records at a party, being one of the 1st live hip hop DJ's on the radio, making international moves, maintaining longevity and more. In Songwriter/Producer/Performer Chas Bronxson's own words, his current approach to music is “working for a cause and not for applause.” Such thinking lends a personal approach to building a new audience of fans in tandem with his label's projects. Additional mastery in the areas of vocal arrangement, video directing/editing, and storyboarding all bring a multidiscipline approach to his work. A sharp business acumen has led his indie label, M.O.U.N. Records, Inc. into the mainstream as of 2017. Once as a part of the group Total Control, he appeared on Chuck Chillout & Kool Chip's, Masters of the Rhythm album as well as Kool DJ Red Alert's, Let's Make It Happen album. As a group member and as a solo artist, he did several promo jingles for local NYC DJ's. He also appeared on a Wendy Williams/Kevin Hunter Mixtape under their Questionmark Entertainment venture, with a parody of Dru Hill's “In My Bed” called “In Your Bed”—then performing under the stage name, Ceelo. He kept the name until Ceelo Green from Goodie Mob emerged, thus the rebirth as ChasBronxson. He placed 1st in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for R&B in 1999, and winning a Publishing Contract from EMI, further proving he was on a progressive track with his talent. On a humanitarian level, he's most dedicated to raising awareness in music and its history among the youth, such as in highlighting organizations like The Living Legends Foundation to raise funds for artists who are no longer recording music and facing hard times financially. It's refreshing to see someone not only committed to their craft, but it's history as well. DJ Mix Mash was introduced to the art of DJ'ing through hours of classic recordings of DJ legends like Kool DJ Red Alert, DJ Chuck Chillout, DJ Scratch & more... but what about our very own Doctor Dre? Come meet this young man who is a student of his craft, genuinely enjoys meeting new people who can share information and oh yes, he is blind - which you will see means very little to becoming a good DJ. DJ Red Alert is a member of the hip hop culture that is known for bringing the music to the people. He began his career as part of the Afrika Bambaataa's Zulu Nation and earned the reputation as a top notch DJ. At one point in the early 80's, Red Alert's equipment was stolen. Once he was able to get at new setup Bambaataa and other members of the Nation were moving to clubs in Manhattan. Red Alert continued to draw a following in Harlem.Red Alert channeled his energies and musical talent into two daily shows on the nations #1 radio station, New York's WQHT HOT 97.1 FM.He has received numerous awards and accolades including a special award at the first annual Rap Hall of Fame Awards show. The prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from IMPACT music trade publication for 1998 and the 1997 Mix Show DJ of the year award from GAVIN. In addition DJ Red Alert was named one of the 50 most influential people in music by Rolling Stone magazine. Red Alert is also featured in an exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. The only DJ of this era so honored! He has appeared in over 50 music videos.Red was reared by his maternal grandparents, who were from Antiqua. Red's love for those around-the-way basketball games led him to his high school team at DeWitt Clinton. No doubt this is where he was dubbed the nickname, “RED”; for his red hair and alert response on the court. Red later received a college basketball scholarship. During the last of his high school years, Red hung out at the Saturday night parties thrown by Kool Herc and Coke La Rock at clubs throughout the west Bronx. Red studied the style of music Kool Herc played and the way he blended the vinyl. On Fridays, Red found himself venturing downtown to check out star disco deejays, such as: Grandmaster Flash, Together Brothers, and Pete DJ Jones. It wasn't long before he was jammin' at parties on his own equipment. It was important to be up on what was happening on the New York scene, so Red was now attending legendary parties throughout the Bronx.Red caught Grandmaster Flash at the Back Door and the Dixie Club, Kool DJ A.J. at the Morehouse Center and Afrika Bambaataa at JHS 123. By this time, Red had gathered enough record selection and record spinning insight to teach his cousin DJ Jazzy Jay the basics of the art. Jazzy Jay in turn introduced Red to Bambaataa. Bambaataa taught Red about rock, reggae and new wave music. Learning about the various styles of dance oriented music, Red soon became the deejay for Bambaaata and his Zulu Nation, joining the likes of Afrika Islam, the Soul Sonic Force, Grandmixer DST and the Rock Steady Crew. Through this association, Red began to spin records downtown at such clubs as Negril and Danceteria. While deejaying at the Roxy, he met Barry Mayo, then program director of NY's WRKS 98.7 KISS FM. A man of considerable taste, Mayo hired Red to inaugurate the “Dance Mix Party.” Red remained at 98.7 KISS FM for 11 years, becoming the top DJ at the station. During his tenure at KISS, Red became the first individual to popularize dancehall music at a major radio station! Before you knew it, Red met up with producer Vincent Davis, of the Vintertainment Record label, through DJ Chuck Chillout, to produce Red's First record, “Hip Hop On Wax, Volume 2.” (Part 1 was made by DJ Chuck Chillout of the B-Boys and Part 3 was by DJ Born Supreme Allah).Another record was “He's My DJ (DJ Red Alert Goes Berserk)” which featured Sparky D on vocals and was released on NIA records produced by Spyder D.He also became a member of the Boogie Down Productions, touring the country with KRS One.Since then, Red has done super mixes for compilation albums on Next Plateau Records and Epic Records. Now a seasoned veteran as radio jock, club jock and studio man, Kool DJ Red Alert has established his place as one of the world's premier DJ's. To top it off Red Alert owns a production and management company, Red Alert Productions (RAP). The company garnered a reputation for developing and promoting new talent. RED is responsible for launching the career of such widely acclaimed acts as the Jungle Brothers, Tribe Called Quest, Black Sheep and Queen Latifah to name a few.In addition DJ Red Alert was the first to introduce numerous hit records including “Soul II Soul” by Jazzy B and “Hold On” by the group En Vogue!Red says, “You have to learn how to break a new artist on record by working it in and out with familiar records. People are scared to fall. It's OK to fall. You must learn how to fall and be strong so you can come back. A DJ is like the pied piper.”Since his break on the radio, Red Alert has had the opportunity to expand hip hop's audience as well as break the careers of Boogie Down Productions, Black Sheep, the Jungle Brothers, and A Tribe Called Quest. He has had cameos on countless albums, and has also released various compilation albums.Lately he has undergone some professional changes after leaving his radio show. Well all wait to see what he has in store for us next. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Kool DJ Red Alert (born Frederick Crute on November 27, 1956) is an American disc jockey who rose to fame on 98.7 Kiss-FM in New York City, and is recognized as one of the founding fathers of hip hop music and culture.[2] His weekly radio show airs on WBLS 107.5 FM Saturday evenings from 6pm-7pm EST.Red Alert is one of the first deejays to perform with the architects of hip hop Universal Zulu Nation. He built his radio show's fanbase by shouting out to listeners within the Tri-State area. Red Alert has been noted for breaking in such acts and artists as A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, and Black Sheep.[3] Red played a vital role in The Bridge Wars beginning in 1986. His legend grew immensely after being the first deejay to break the record South Bronx by Boogie Down Productions on his KISS-FM weekend radio show and club gigs in support of the Bronx-based hip hop group versus MC Shan, Marley Marl, and the Juice Crew.Red Alert holds the all-time record for the most guest appearances among all hip hop artists and personalities in the history of music video. When the cassette tapes gained popularity in the 1970s, Red Alert was the first disc jockey to record mix compilation albums, which were later known as mixtapes. He also was the first mixshow disc jockey to introduce dancehall to mainstream radio on his KISS 98.7 FM during the early 1980s. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week on A Waste of Time with ItsTheReal, we welcome The Remix King himself, East Harlem's own DJ Ted Smooth, to the Upper West Side! Ted talks earning his stripes playing whiffleball and basketball on the streets, playing his way into the Little League World Series, growing up in a single mother home, and learning to spin records at an early age thanks to his older brother being the legendary mixtape DJ Rei Double R. Ted discusses coming up in NYC as a performative DJ, learning reggae records early, building up an audience that would follow him from club to club, battling Kool DJ Red Alert, fronting on Kid Capri when he was trying to enter the DJ booth, and how he amazingly beat out Funkmaster Flex for the most desired piece of vinyl in Manhattan. We get into Lumidee's certified banger Uh Oh, how Ted forced Columbia Records' hand when he remixed Beyonce's Love on Top, knowing Jay-Z and Damon Dash and Big Pun and Fat Joe from the club days, working with Fabulous and Jadakiss for the Freddy vs. Jason project, and so much more, and for the first time ever, Ted tells the story behind the infamous One Blood loop!
