Clayton Haslop's journey as a violinist has been nothing short of extraordinary. At just 18, he joined the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and rose to become its concertmaster. Over the years, he also served as concertmaster for the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra and contributed his talents to numerous iconic film scores, including Titanic, The Matrix, and many others. But Clayton's path wasn't always smooth. In his forties, he faced a daunting challenge when he was diagnosed with Focal Dystonia in his left hand. Despite years of struggle and bouts of depression, Clayton made a remarkable comeback by relearning to play the violin using only two fingers on his left hand. I'm especially honored to have this conversation with Clayton, as we were roommates in Santa Monica in the early 1980s. Although I was ten years his senior, I learned so much from him during those years. Speaking with him on this podcast is truly a privilege.In Part 1 of our conversation, we delve into what it's like to be a concertmaster for some of the top studio orchestras, the experience of working on blockbuster films like Titanic and The Matrix, and collaborating with renowned film composers, each with their unique personalities and approaches to recording sessions. William Garrett is a Producer/Mixer and Engineer. William has worked with such artists as New Kids On The Block, Shania Twain, Brandi Carlile, Def Leopard and Mitski. William Garrett's career has covered some amazing and diverse musical genres.He has been a Producer/Mixer/Engineer for over 4 decades, and has supervised the build of multiple recording studios including the 2023 Tec Award winning facility at 555 Matteo in Los Angeles for Spotify. As the producer/mixer for the program, Spotify Singles from 2016-2024, William has worked with an astounding array of artists and supervised over 900 songs, garnering 9.5 billion streams to date. Mostrecent projects include Jon Batiste's soundtrack for Jason Reitman's upcoming film "SNL 1975", and "Bilal"-Live at Glasshaus" featuring Questlove,Common, Robert Glasper, and Burnis Travis.

Don Randi is a keyboard player, bandleader, longtime nightclub owner (no easy feat in L.A.) and a veteran of one of the most prolific and successful group of Los Angeles studio session musicians known as The Wrecking Crew.He began his career as a professional pianist and keyboard player in 1956, gradually establishing a reputation as a leading session musician. In the early 1960s, he was a major contributor, as musician and arranger, to producer Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound". He also played piano on "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'," by Nancy Sinatra, and The Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations". He's  played on over three hundred hit records, working with musicians such as The Ronettes, Darlene Love, Linda Ronstadt, Quincy Jones, Cannonball Adderley, Herb Alpert, Neil Diamond, The Jackson 5, James Brown, Sarah Vaughan, Frank Zappa and many, many more!He appeared on, and wrote for, many motion picture and television soundtracks, commercials and pop albums during the 1960s and 1970s. He also recorded albums of piano jazz music under his own name and as the leader of a trio with Leroy Vinnegar and Mel Lewis. These included Feelin' Like Blues (1960), Where Do We Go From Here (1962), Last Night (1963), and Love Theme From "Romeo And Juliet" (1968).In 1970, he opened the Baked Potato Jazz Club, and formed his own group, Don Randi and Quest, as the house band. Laura works tirelessly coordinating with military casualty officers on Hero Missions to ensure that military heroes are given the respect and recognition they deserve upon their final return home.  Laura's commitment does not end there. LA Studio and Jazz player Carl Saunders has been described as "the best trumpet player you've never heard of." Well, we hope to change that with this month's Brass Chat because he's ridiculous. The guy can do anything with a horn, was generous with his time and talents, and plays a lot of trumpet during this interview, which was a real treat for us; hearing Carl solo is like...uh...pouring melted chocolate into a glass of red wine, them mixing that with honey and pouring it over some ice cream or something.
