In this episode of the Elite Business Advice Podcast, we kick off the new Back to Basics Series, designed to help painting contractors refocus on the fundamentals that truly move the needle in 2026. One of the biggest challenges we see when coaching business owners isn't a lack of knowledge—it's a lack of organization and follow-through. Great ideas and systems don't matter if nothing actually gets done. This episode breaks down how to build a simple, repeatable to-do system that works for both your personal life and your business, how to establish clear rhythms and frequencies for important tasks like job costing, cash flow management, and goal reviews, and how to break large projects into manageable action steps to avoid overwhelm. What if the relentless drive to maximize personal gain isn't human nature, but just a flawed model we built? In this Back-to-Basics episode, behavioral economist Samuel Bowles helps us lay homo economicus—the myth of the perfectly rational, self-interested actor—six feet under. He shows how this caricature not only misrepresents human behavior, but underpins an economic system that ignores cooperation, community, and ethics. If we're hoping to reclaim our society from greed-driven oligarchs and neoliberal policy, we need a better model—which starts with recognizing that humans are more than economic robots. Samuel Bowles is an economist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, currently serving as Research Professor and Director of the Behavioral Sciences Program at the Santa Fe Institute. He is also the author of The Moral Economy: Why Good Incentives Are No Substitute for Good Citizens. This episode originally aired May 7, 2019. The promise of the American Dream—work hard, play by the rules, and you'll get ahead—is unraveling before our eyes. In this Back-to-Basics episode, Christian H. Cooper and law professor Khiara Bridges join Nick and Goldy to posit whether economic mobility has ever truly existed, or if the system was rigged from the start. As wages stagnate, homeownership drifts out of reach, and inequality worsens, their conversation exposes how the American Dream has always been selectively granted and systematically denied. Amid today's debates over “competitiveness” and “opportunity,” this episode is a reminder: the American Dream didn't disappear by accident—it's been taken. Understanding how is the first step toward winning it back. Christian Cooper is a derivatives trader, quantitative finance author, and commentator based in New York City. He directs Banking for a New Beginning, a collaboration between the Aspen Institute and the U.S. Department of State that connects central banks in emerging markets—such as Turkey, Tunisia, and Pakistan—with best practices to strengthen their financial systems Khiara M. Bridges is an anthropologist and professor of law at UC Berkeley School of Law, specializing in race, class, reproductive rights, and constitutional law. When a few giants dominate the economy, democracy is the first to go. In this back-to-basics episode, author and anti-monopoly expert Matt Stoller unpacks how concentrated corporate power doesn't just warp markets—it tilts the political playing field toward plutocracy. Drawing from his book Goliath, Stoller shows how corporate giants from banks to Big Tech leverage economic dominance into political control, fueling authoritarianism and undermining citizen power. This is more than an economics lesson—it's a warning, and one that we must hear, now more than ever. Political power isn't confined to ballots and policy. It lives in company boardrooms and consolidated industries. Understanding how monopolies operate is the first step toward reclaiming American democracy. Matt Stoller is the Director of Research at the American Economic Liberties Project, where he focuses on monopoly power and antitrust policy. He is co-host of the Organized Money Podcast, and the author of Goliath: The 100-Year War Between Monopoly Power and Democracy, a history of how concentrated corporate power undermines democratic governance. We've all heard the story: In a fair market, workers are paid exactly what they're worth. Economists even have a name for it—marginal productivity theory. It's neat, simple…and completely wrong. In this Back-to-Basics episode, economist Marshall Steinbaum and labor leader Saru Jayaraman dismantle the myth that the market fairly rewards labor. Steinbaum reveals how this theory has been weaponized to excuse wage stagnation, justify corporate power, and erode worker bargaining rights. Jayaraman shows what that looks like in the real world, from restaurant workers stuck at subminimum wages to entire industries built on underpaying the people who keep them running. They make the case that your paycheck isn't determined by some neutral law of economics—it's the result of choices, policies, and power dynamics that can be rewritten to ensure everyone is truly paid what they're worth. Marshall Steinbaum is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Utah and a Senior Fellow in Higher Education Finance at the Jain Family Institute. Saru Jayaraman is an attorney, President of One Fair Wage and the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC United), and author of One Fair Wage: Ending Subminimum Pay in America. If you've ever wondered why the economy feels stuck, even when it seems like there's a lot more money in the system, this episode will blow your mind. Political economist Ann Pettifor joins Nick and Goldy to explain why money isn't flowing like it used to, and why that matters. Over the last century, the velocity of money (how quickly a dollar circulates) has plummeted. Today, each dollar in circulation generates up to 70% less economic activity than it did just ten years ago, so it's not being circulated through the local economies, growing wages, and building small businesses with each transaction. Instead, new dollars are just frozen in place. The culprit? Excess money sitting at the top—hoarded by the wealthy and corporations instead of getting spent. Pettifor shows that taxing the rich isn't just fair—it's pro-growth. Redistribution accelerates the velocity of money, unleashing demand, expanding markets, creating jobs, and ultimately boosting prosperity for everyone. If you're ready to reclaim the economy from its top-down chokehold, this back-to-basics episode isn't optional—it's essential. Ann Pettifor is a British political economist, author, and Director of Policy Research in Macroeconomics (PRIME). Known for correctly predicting the 2008 financial crisis, her work spans sovereign debt, macroeconomics, and sustainable development. She's the author of The Production of Money and The Case for the Green New Deal, and directs groundbreaking research that puts money creation and equitable growth at the center of economic policy. For decades, orthodox economics has treated morality as irrelevant—as if economic decisions happen in a vacuum, separate from our values and social bonds. But that approach has failed spectacularly, giving cover to policies that divide and exploit us. In this episode, Heather McGhee joins Nick and Paul to argue that morality must be central to how we think about the economy. They explore how racial division has been weaponized to undermine collective action, why “structural racism” can't be addressed without naming the powerful actors behind it, and how inclusive economic policies lead to more prosperity for everyone. Part of our Back-to-Basics summer series—essential listening for anyone ready to reject trickle-down and reimagine the economy as a moral system built on trust, justice, and cooperation. This episode originally aired April 2, 2019. Heather McGhee is a policy expert, author, and advocate for economic and racial justice. She is the former president of the progressive think tank Demos and currently serves as a Distinguished Senior Fellow. Heather is the author of the New York Times bestselling book, The Sum of Us, and her work has appeared in outlets such as The New York Times, The Nation, and NBC News. Is economic growth just about money, trade, and GDP? Or is something deeper at play? In this episode, economist W. Brian Arthur and physicist Cesar Hidalgo join Nick and Goldy to reveal the real drivers of rising prosperity: human knowledge, know‑how, and innovation. They challenge the old assumptions of growth and argue that innovation isn't a byproduct of a strong economy—it's a cause of economic growth. Once we understand that, it changes how we think about investing in people and shaping the economy. Part of our Back‑to‑Basics summer series. Essential listening for anyone who believes that growth should empower people, not enrich the status quo. This episode originally aired January 15, 2019. W. Brian Arthur is an economist and complexity theorist, renowned for his work on technology and innovation. A longtime researcher at the Santa Fe Institute and former Stanford professor, he's the author of The Nature of Technology, in which he argues that economic growth stems from evolving combinations of existing technologies. Cesar Hidalgo is a physicist, professor at the Toulouse School of Economics, and Director at the Center for Collective Learning at Corvinus University of Budapest. He's also the author of Why Information Grows, where he explores how knowledge and know-how shape economies, arguing that real prosperity comes from embedding insights in people and collaborative networks. Trickle-downers love to pretend that "Econ 101" is a convincing argument against policies like the minimum wage that invest in working Americans. But the truth is that mainstream economists are terrible at predicting how the economy will behave in the future…Is Econ 101 broken? In this key foundational episode for the podcast, we dismantle the myths of orthodox economics and expose Econ 101 for what it really is: not a science, but a simplistic story used to justify inequality and defend the status quo. Our guests Eric Beinhocker (The Origin of Wealth) and James Kwak (Economism) explain how outdated assumptions about markets, people, and growth have warped economic thinking—and why it's time to write a new, better story about how the economy actually works. Part of our Back-to-Basics summer series. Essential listening for anyone ready to move beyond trickle-down talking points and think middle-out. This episode originally aired December 17, 2018. Eric Beinhocker is the Executive Director of the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the University of Oxford. He's the author of The Origin of Wealth, which applies complexity science to economics and challenges traditional market thinking. James Kwak is a writer, law professor, and former entrepreneur. Ever find yourself halfway through a Pitchfork Economics episode thinking, “Wait… what's a monopsony?” You're not alone. In this listener-favorite episode, Nick and Goldy break down some of the most important—and most misunderstood—economic terms we use on the show. From ‘neoclassical' and ‘neoliberal' to ‘monopoly', ‘monopsony,' ‘stock buybacks,' and ‘heterodox economics,' we cut through the jargon so you can focus on what really matters: understanding how the economy works—and who it works for. Send us a textEver felt that tightness in your chest before a big decision, a tough conversation, or when a deadline looms? We all have. But here's the truth:
In 2014, Nick Hanauer sounded the alarm: if economic inequality kept growing, the pitchforks would come—for him, and for the rest of America's wealthy elite. Then 2016 happened. Donald Trump was elected president on a wave of economic populism that correctly identified massive inequality as a problem, but which offered all the wrong solutions. The inaugural episode of Pitchfork Economics lays the groundwork for everything that followed. We revisit the urgent warning that launched the show, explore the deep myths that still shape our economy, and explain why telling a better story about how the economy works is the first step toward building one that works for everyone. Part of our Back-to-Basics summer series—essential listening for anyone ready to ditch trickle-down and think middle-out. Ganesh Sitaraman is a law professor at Vanderbilt University and a leading expert on constitutional law, economic inequality, and political economy. He's the author of several influential books, including The Crisis of the Middle-Class Constitution, The Great Democracy, and Why Flying Is Miserable and How to Fix It. Sitaraman has served as a policy advisor to Senator Elizabeth Warren and co-founded the Vanderbilt Policy Accelerator. Walter Scheidel is a historian at Stanford University whose work explores inequality, economic history, and the rise and fall of civilizations. He's best known for his acclaimed book The Great Leveler, which argues that throughout history, extreme inequality has only been reduced through violent shocks like war, revolution, or plague. This morning I wanted to flush my kid down the toilet, it was just one of those mornings. It made me realize that while last week we had a great chat about reactive regulation, it was a bit heavy on the theory vs practical application. I'm extending that conversation today to share some real life examples of how I use these tools in my everyday life, how I used them this morning with my son. So, here's Part 6 of my Back to the Basics Series. In this episode, you'll learn:How a challenging morning with a 4-year-old demonstrates simple regulation techniques that prevent reactive parentingUsing activating breathwork to overcome the 2pm energy slump instead of reaching for caffeineNavigating grief with grounding techniques that help process emotions without becoming overwhelmedThe three ways reactive regulation tools support us: physiologically shifting our state, creating awareness and pause, and building confidence and agency3 Takeaways (about why reactive tools work). It's because…They can directly impact your physiology - Breath work, movement, temperature changes, and vision exercises actually shift your autonomic nervous system state. They help us create awareness and pause - Even if you don't shift states completely, the simple act of noticing and pausing creates space between stimulus and response. That morning with my child, I still felt frustrated, but the pause allowed me to respond intentionally rather than react automatically. They build confidence and agency - Having these tools counters the helplessness that often comes with dysregulation. Instead of "I don't know what to do," you begin to think, "I have tools I can try." This builds a sense of agency over time.Next Episode Preview: Next week, we will move on to proactive regulation and explore how creating a more regulated life sets the stage for long-term healing and well-being.-Looking for more personalized support?Book a FREE discovery call for RESTORE, our 1:1 anxiety & depression coaching program (HSA/FSA eligible & includes comprehensive bloodwork)Join me inside Regulated Living, a mental health membership and nervous system healing space (sliding scale pricing available)Order my book, Healing Through the Vagus Nerve today!*Want me to talk about something specific on the podcast? In this first episode of the “Back to Basics” series, where I dive into the core of what drives anxiety and depression: your nervous system. When you better understand how this mind-body system works you can work with it towards healing. You'll learn:→ What the nervous system is and how it functions→ The difference between regulation and dysregulation→ How stress and past experiences shape your responses→ A simple framework (the nervous system ladder) to understand anxiety, depression, and survival statesKey Takeaways:Your nervous system isn't working against you—it's trying to protect you. Your symptoms are messages, they're protective. When you understand your nervous system, you can move from self-blame to self-compassion, realizing that everything you experience makes sense.Take a moment to reflect—what stressors, past or present, are weighing down your system? Does where you find yourself on that nervous system ladder most often make more sense when that comes into view?By the end of this episode, my hope is that you walk away with a deeper understanding of why your symptoms make sense—and with a new glimmer of hope for healing.Looking for more personalized support?Book a FREE discovery call for RESTORE, our 1:1 anxiety & depression coaching program (HSA/FSA eligible & includes comprehensive bloodwork)Join me inside Regulated Living, a mental health membership and nervous system healing space (sliding scale pricing available)Order my book, Healing Through the Vagus Nerve today!*Want me to talk about something specific on the podcast? Your prospect has rejected the deal, and now you're unsure whether to try another sales tactic to change their mind or simply move on. This final episode of the Back to Basics series will guide you in overcoming sales objections and keeping your pipeline moving forward. Slow Down It's natural to do everything in your power to get a prospect to say yes. This can often lead to rushing the sales process in hopes of securing that long-awaited agreement. Instead of speeding up, take a moment to pause and breathe deeply. Begin addressing the objections raised by your prospect calmly and methodically. Taking the time to regroup prevents panic and helps you avoid costly mistakes. Express Appreciation Your prospect may have valid reasons for hesitating or declining to move forward in the sales process. Acknowledge this by expressing understanding and gratitude for their time. Next, use a softener to gain permission to dive deeper into their concerns. I explain how to do this in the episode, which will help you uncover the root cause of their objection. Don't forget to use the “5 Whys” technique to get to the heart of the issue. Schedule the Next Meeting Once you've identified their real concern and explained how you can help solve the problem, schedule your next meeting. Also, consider creating a clear plan outlining the next steps, so the prospect knows what to expect moving forward. “To overcome objections, it comes down to having conversations, being human, and expressing your feelings. Once you're vulnerable, the prospect will feel more comfortable sharing their problems.” – Donald Kelly. Before visiting Dubai, I did some research to determine if it was the right destination for a trip. If I hadn't taken a few minutes to do so, I could have ended up having a horrible experience. This is why it's important for you to conduct discovery calls—to ensure you and your prospect will have a pleasant experience working together. In this episode, I share the basics of a discovery call and how to set one up properly to ensure you land a deal with your prospect. The Purpose of Discovery Calls Discovery calls are meant to determine if you and the prospect are a good fit for each other. Too often, sales reps focus solely on their own goals instead of the prospect's needs. If you're only focused on reaching your quota, how can you be sure your product will actually solve the prospect's problem? Steps to a Successful Discovery Call Confirm the Appointment: Before the day of the discovery call, confirm the meeting and ensure that the right individuals will be attending. Build Rapport: Start by asking probing questions to help the prospect feel comfortable and begin building a relationship. Provide an Agenda: Clearly outline the purpose of the discovery call. This conversation is your opportunity to understand what's going on with them and explore how you can provide a solution to their problem. Pay Attention to Pain Points When the prospect begins sharing their challenges, listen with the intention of truly understanding their needs. One of my future guests shared an active listening technique to help improve this skill. Also, pay attention to what the prospect isn't saying, as this can help you uncover problems they may not even realize they have. “To help the prospect, you must focus on them. This is how you know that you can provide a solution for them.” - Donald Kelly. Satan thought he had defeated Christ at the Cross only to discover that Jesus had completely flipped the tables on him. Christ is Victor. At the Cross, Jesus Christ disarmed the principalities and powers and canceled the debt against us (Col. 2:14-15). This victory is the foundation of our freedom and our authority in Christ. What does it look like to have this authority? In this series, we dig into Scripture that exposes the devil's nature and look at strategies for breaking free and staying free of the enemy and his snares. We discuss the foundational principles of spiritual warfare, specifically the legal approach that deals with permission and authority. This compilation episode covers Season 1, Episodes 39-41. As John draws his letter to a close, he reminds the church and Christians the importance of accountability within the church and the importance of praying for one another. All of us struggle to overcome sin in our lives and John wants us to make sure we utilize the power of the local faith community in our struggles. In this message we look at the importance, privilege and power of personal prayer in the lives of Christian. Prayer is the most underused weapon the Christian has available for dealing with the struggles of this life as well as developing a deeper and more intimate relationship with God. John tells us in 1st John 5:13 that the purpose of this letter was so that Christians could have assurance in eternal life. So that we could be confident in our relationship with God through Jesus Christ and have no doubts about what awaits us when we die. Yet, if you were to ask many in the church "If you were to die today, where would you go" you are likely to heave answers that start with "I hope" or "I think". John warns us that there is a vast difference between our hope and thinking and having confident assurance (knowing). So how can we know for sure? Join us as we discover that our assurance is not based on wishful thinking or hope but rather facts and faith! Why is it so important to John? Because your answer will affect every area of how you live your life. From 1st John 5:6-13. In this solo episode I begin sharing portions of an investing basics workshop that I created for black women over 45 who are hesitant to invest. One of the top three reasons we are hesitant is because we feel we don't know enough about it and don't know where to begin. Join me for this podcast series on Homesteading 101: Back to the Basics. We know countless people are joining this homesteading movement, and I would like to hold the door open and welcome you in. In this series we'll be discussing the five pillars of homesteading: gardening, livestock, homestead cooking, preserving and herbal medicine. Though this series won't be a comprehensive step-by-step on how to start a homestead, it should help answer some of those basic questions many people have when venturing into a new aspect of homesteading. For more information and any links mentioned in this episode, visit https://melissaknorris.com/420. American Blossom Linens: I want to thank American Blossom Linens for sponsoring this podcast. You may think of linens and bedsheets as a basic item, but they're a staple in most homes. If you want heirloom quality sheets that will last a lifetime, American Blossom Linens is for you. I've found in many areas of the homestead, by investing in higher quality items (yes, they generally cost more up front), I inevitably save money in the long run. This is definitely true for my sheet set from American Blossom Linens. I've had my sheets for two and a half years and they're only getting softer and softer. The fourth and final in our Back to Basics Series (following a set list of: (1)Do I Have a Problem? (2)How Did I Get Here? and (3)A Recovery Toolbox). This episode looks at what recovery looks like from a process perspective. How does it actually look as you go along? How long does it take to recover? Stef's Tetris analogy -- what if you've been working on recovery forever and your behaviors don't change? Where do the feelings of discomfort (hopelessness, despair, insecurity, anxiety, depression) go when food is not the outlet? What happens to them in recovery? The Whack-a-Mole phenomenon What if you feel hopeless a lot? How do you know if you're ready to recovery? How do you become ready? Does it matter what age you are when you recover? Can you focus too much on recovery? As we started this new year I wanted bring us to back to some basics to help remind you of some solid truths to get you started ;in the right direction this year! Last week I touched quickly on the fact that we believe that Jesus is the son of God, He came, died and rose again in victory so we could have freedom in Him! Today quickly on of the foundational beliefs is that the Bible is God's word and truth. 2 Timothy 3:16-17. It says, All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.Hebrews 4:12- For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double edged sword. It penetrates even to the dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. God speaks to us through his word! Woot! When we trust and believe that His word is truth and stand on the promises of God then we can stand in His victory, peace, joy..you name it! So today's quick encouragement is Develop spiritual disciplines- Just like any other thing in our life, eating heathy, exercising, sleeping well, all the self care stuff…we need to develop spiritual habits that will help us grow in our walk with God!2Declare His wordThis is going to be a simple one. While you're developing your discipline of reading his word, start to declare it out loud! There is something amazing that happens when we partner with God's word and actually use it to speak life over ourselves, marriages, families, kids, work places, schools, homes etc! There is power in His word and power in OUR spoken words! If you aren't sure what scripture to declare you can start by grabbing my printable scripture cards! The link is in the description!! It's an easy way to take scripture on the or hang around your house to declare His goodness throughout your day!! Check them out now! :) Quotes from the googleWhat we say matters because our words express our emotions, what we are thinking and feeling. Those emotions are read by others, and influence how others respond to us, learn from us, reflect us. This is part of the empathy process. We typically think of empathy as a caring feeling, but that is compassion.More and more, studies are showing how the language we use can affect our minds and our bodies in both positive and negative ways. A 2020 study discovered that words of encouragement helped recipients overcome fears and improve performance at a task or during a game.Grab the awesome scripture cards! >> https://stan.store/mrsangelapitnikoff/p/30-scripture-cardsBe encouraged, challenged and blessed today!!✨Come hang with me on IG- https://www.instagram.com/mrsangelapitnikoff/✨Join our FB sisterhood!- https://www.facebook.com/groups/kingdomdaughterssisterhood✨Be more amazing and leave a review!- https://lovethepodcast.com/LoHGyj✨Want some fun free resources? So last week we talked a bit about our beliefs as far as believing that Jesus is the son of God, He came, died and rose again so we can have freedom and victory! Reminder…HE is still on the thone of victory in your life! Keep your eyes fixed on Him friend! When He left, he left us with Holy Spirit our advocate. John 14:15-17- “If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. Vs 26-27- But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. We believe in the Holy Spirit and in the Holy Trinity! I love that HOly Spirit is still here with us…leading and guiding us. Going before us. Romans 8:26-27 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the will of God.He even prays on our behalf!! Isn't that so awesome! So quick steps to help you today..Decide to give it all and Dive in! - Ephesians 3:19 says May you experience the love of the Chirist, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. (NLT)When we give Him full control and really get soaked in his presence we can understand His fullness and overflow that goodness in our lives! So practically speaking what this means is to not hold back when it comes to getting to know jesus. Make a decision to make Him number uno in your life! Jump into reading the word. Go to church with the expectation that He will move in your life. Bring worship and prayer into your home with full abandon..not holding back :) 2. Deepen your trust in HimJeremiah 17:7-8 But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. They will be like a tree planted by water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit. When we have confidence and trust in Him we don't have to fear or worry and will always have good fruit in our lives! I don't know about you but that sounds amazing!
