Chief Executive Andrew Carter is joined by Tim Leunig, who has had a notable career being a policy adviser to several senior Cabinet figures including two Chancellors as well as being an award winning economic history academic at the London School of Economics. He talks here about his role in the Government's Covid-19 furlough scheme, how think tanks can build trust and influence in Whitehall, and what economic historians can teach policymakers. This episode is part of Centre for Cities' City Talks series. Please rate, review and share the episode if you enjoyed it. To stay updated on Tim Leunig's work, subscribe to his Substack.
I don't tire of quoting Thomas Cranmer's 'meme' that goes like this: "What the heart loves, the will chooses, and the mind justifies." That is so true to life. Now note its difference with the sentence quoted in part one of this cast by my old episcopal acquaintance in Australia: "Nothing can be loved at speed" (M. Leunig). But the heart always loves at speed! Perseverance and steady, thoughtful loving exists, yes, but as a fruit of heart-love: Its fruit -- its consequence -- its effect. And the heart, I say again, always loves at speed. You could almost say this is the secret of life. Cranmer certainly said it. You and I know it from experience. Almost all our core decisions were made "at speed". We didn't think them through before making them. Our heart was "caught", and so it went and "So It Goes" (B. Joel, 1990). When we said 'yes' to God, or when we first said a real prayer, it "Only Took a Minute, Lord'. We didn't "count the cost". We probably should have, but we didn't in fact. By the Grace of God, our hearts were so "warmed" (John Wesley on May the 24th) that the warm lasted. The warm kept heating us as long as life went on. "Listen to the Warm" (Rod McK., 1967). So, um, well, OK, I, ... Listen to your Heart. LUV U.
An old acquaintance, an Australian bishop, has been quoting recently from a popular cartoonist and kind of pop philosopher "Down Under" named Mike Leunig. The bishop quoted an aphorism from Leunig in relation to his long-term hopes for the Anglican Church in Australia: "Nothing can be loved at speed". When I heard my old colleague quoting Mike Leunig, a 1975 disco hit by Tavares flashed instantly into my mind: "It Only Takes a Minute, Girl (To Fall in Love)". What this sudden flash told me was: It's not true -- it is not true that "nothing can be loved at speed". One's heart in fact always loves at speed. Almost every big decision you've ever made was made "at speed"! The heart moves no other way. The heart loves at speed. Incidentally, people rarely say this, at least where they could be heard. You don't want to be thought to believe that "It Only Takes a Minute, Girl". That sounds un-wise, un-"nuanced" -- the worst possible thing you could ever be regarded as being -- and imprudent. Nevertheless, it is the way life is. When you review your life, how many decisions you made were actually made in a flash, in a lightning-like "AHA" ('Take on Me') moment? Please tell me. You didn't choose the college you went to based on ... thoughtful ratiocination. You didn't choose the profession you chose based on... weighing all the pros and cons. You didn't marry the gal/guy you married on the basis of... thought. (Did you?) This cast is about inward (heartfelt) truth vs. outward (rationalizing) truth. When you are dying, I believe you will only know the former. LUV, PZ

Michael Leunig is one of Australia's best-loved cartoonists. His work has appeared in The Age for more than 40 years. He talks to Nick Cater about the cartoonist's shrinking role as court jester and free thinking spirit in an age when the restrictions around humour are increasingly suffocating and the penalties for dissidents increasingly harsh. It's a newsy week and we've got a long newsy show for you all. This week we're serving up... Aperitifs: Crown Casino lose their license but also don't, featuring Noon singing. The Federal Government is trying to bring in voter ID laws. And Michael Leunig has been fired from the age. We also have a SPOTW for Meag's Leunig knock-off. Positivity Corner: ICAC continues to ICAC, with both Gladys Berejiklian and Daryl Maguire taking the witness stand this week. We re-enact some of the tapped phone calls and get you up to date with all the major drama. First Nations: New funding for Indigenous artists is cool but doesn't address with the huge problems and rampant exploitation in the Aboriginal art industry, which artists and art collectives have been calling for help with. ACAB: Former head of ethics at Victorian Police, Brett Guerin, will receive no punishment for making several hundred of some of the most vile and racist internet comments either of us have ever seen. Fashy Australia: Zac takes us through the Online Safety Act, the changes to privacy laws, and the Online Defamation Bill, three attempts by the Federal Government to regulate social media platforms. Mains - Nat Zero Carbonara: Scott Morrison is going to COP26 (the annual international climate policy conference) with a completely useless and meaningless "the plan" for net zero emissions by 2050. It's actually impressively bad. "By the practice of the limbs of Yoga, the impurities dwindle away and there dawns the light of wisdom, leading to discriminative discernment." “Dukham evam sarvaam vivekinaha.” For a viveki, a person with discriminative knowledge, everything is painful and also, simultaneously, full and sweet. As epic poet, Leonard Cohen wrote, “Ring the bells that still can ring Forget your perfect offering There is a crack, a crack in everything That's how the light gets in.” When you allow yourself to break and you see your cracks for what they are, you cease to develop the painful pattern of grasping for perfection. In fact, when we embrace those painful cracks, we transform what was painfully imperfect into something supremely beautiful. Truly, if we read just that one sutra of Patanjali, and realize that everything manifests from pain, then there's little more we need to know. Our guest today shares her deep wisdom with us and it's a tremendous honor. Dena Kingsberg has seen things. She is a Viveki to be sure. She can anticipate the worst, while envisioning the best, and clearly discerning the cracks in the facade of those who come to her for teaching. Harmony shares this kind of understanding of the world, and recognizes the same mystic wonder, strength, courage, and discipline that Dena embodies through her teachings. “Yoga Is Not Pretty.” — But we're going to keep persevering anyway, because as Dena reminds us, “No one is going to help you heal yourself.” And if you don't do the work to sort out your citta vriti (thought patterns), samskaras (action patterns), and vasanas (unconscious desires) you're going to live trapped with whatever you get. We are blessed today to share our conversation with Dena about her personal transformation from an awkward child into an artist, poet, and rock-goddess architect. She built her home using her own hands and she's built her life in much the same way. It's challenging to be a deeply introverted person, while also being called to publicly share the sacred wisdom gleaned from time spent inwardly looking. As a popular Australian cartoonist, Leunig, has shared in his poem… Let it go Let it out Let it all unravel Let it free And it shall be A path on which to travel Between this breaking and unraveling, both Dena and Harmony have come to feel that the weight of life is Full and Sweet. Knowing how painful things can be in this world, while honoring each simple blessing, and recognizing the flow of grace in every day life, is a kind of miracle in and of itself… And that's where the light comes in. Because after all, “It's the sameness in each of us that makes us truly special.” - Dena Kingsberg FIND OUT MORE ABOUT DENA: WEBSITE I FACEBOOK I INSTAGRAM - dena.net.au The Finding Harmony Podcast is hosted, edited and produced by Harmony Slater and co-hosted by Russell Case. This week's episode we catch up with the gig poster guru and music fan after my heart, the amazingly talented and trippy artist Matt Leunig. A lot has changed since we last spoke back for Episode 44. Matt now lives in the Atlanta area, previously he was in San Francisco and he is also full immersed in doing the dad thing and crushing it. Fun fact is that because of Matt we have these create episode album covers. When he created the one for his original episode my mind was blown and thanks in huge part to Zac Brady, they are now a staple of the project. One of the nerdy reasons I wanted to have the early guests back is so that they could get the proper album cover artwork.
For the conclusion of our interview with our prominent political FB posters, we drag our guests into the cage to do battle in our own Coronavirus debate. We listen in as the mighty foes, Dan Leunig and Dave Balistreri, clash when put on the spot to answer hard hitting questions like "Should the response to the virus be on the Federal or State level?", "Should people who refuse to wear masks be fined or arrested?", "Should the vaccine be mandatory?" Put your big boy shoes on for this show, folks, it's not for the faint of heart! Note: After previewing this interview, some have described it as more of a "Pillow fight" than a clash of any kind. We respectfully disagree, although we might be a bit biased. Enjoy!
Ever wonder what's in the minds of the people who frequently discuss politics on Facebook? We did, so we asked our guests, Dan Leunig and Dave Balistreri to join us and give us some insight into what their motivations are behind their posting, whether they think their posts have an effect on their readers and just what kind of etiquette is involved when it comes to talking politics on social media. Enjoy!

Well-known cartoonist Michael Leunig’s most recent work shows a young mum glued to her screen as her newborn is cast away on the ground behind her. He’s copped a lot of criticism, but does Leunig have a point when it comes to our relationship with our phones? Plus, boys from a private school were filmed yelling a misogynistic chant on a Melbourne tram this week. What does this tell us about young men? And would the same thing have happened if these boys went to a co-ed school? And a reality TV star has taken a network to court over her ‘psychological wound’, and won. So, who is liable for the so-called “villain edit”? And is this precedent going to change reality television for good? Michael Leunig is an Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet. His commentary on political, cultural and emotional life spans more than 50 years and has often explored the idea of an innocent and sacred personal world. The fragile ecosystem of human nature and its relationship to the wider natural world is a related and recurrent theme. His newspaper work appears regularly and the Melbourne Age and Sydney Morning Herald, and his cartoons have been compiled into various books including the Curly Flats series and The Adventures of Vasco Pyjama. He describes his approach as regressive, humorous, messy, mystical and primal. Producing work which is open to many interpretations and has been widely adapted in education, music, theater, psychotherapy and spiritual life. A lot of what he says in this conversation resonates very deeply with me, and is a fascinating insight into a marvellous artistic mind:“What is most personal is most universal.”“I’m trying to uphold that idea of wisdom.”“It’s OK to be yourself. Dave Walker is known and loved by Church Times readers for his weekly cartoons on church life. At Greenbelt last month, Dave spoke to the Australian cartoonist Michael Leunig — whose work appears regularly in the Melbourne Age and the Sydney Morning Herald — about the art, craft, and pain of cartooning. “A cartoonist is pushing boundaries or trying to assert freedom of speech,” Leunig says. “‘A cartoon in good taste is a contradiction in terms', an editor once said to me. It's the cartoonist who's allowed to be the holy fool or the court jester. You're allowed to get away with things, and it's a privileged position.” Listen to the fascinating conversation on this week's edition of the Church Times Podcast. Dave Walker's seventh collection of Church Times cartoons, Revenge of the Flowers Arrangers, will be published at the end of the month by Canterbury Press. cartoonchurch.com
Peoria artists Doug and Eileen Leunig chat with the Journal Star's Chris Kaergard about the upcoming Big Picture Peoria street festival on Oct. 12, 2019 in Peoria's Warehouse District. The festival will feature chalk artists, live music, an open-mic competition and much more, with funds raised going towards arts education at after-school programs and community centers throughout the city.
This week I catch up with Melbourne based artist Minna Leunig. We discuss her development in art and her link with nature.
From growing up in a famously creative household in the bush, to forging her own career as an artist, Minna Leunig is truly a star on the rise. In her very first podcast, tune in to hear the stories behind Minna's creative journey.
No Sooner by Michael Leunig from the Personal Funeral blog:http://personalfuneral.blogspot.com/2012/09/no-sooner-by-michael-leunig-mediation.html“No sooner do you arrive than it's time to leave. How beautiful it is, how glorious, yet it's nearly time to go. So you take it in, you take it in.And you take a few small souvenirs, some leaves: lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus.A few small pebbles, a few small secrets, a look you received, nine little notes of music, and then it's time to go.You move towards the open door and the silent night beyond. The few bright stars, a deep breath, and it really is time to go.No sooner does it all begin to make sense, does it start to come true, does it all open up, do you begin to see, does it enter into your heart…no sooner do you arrive than it's time to leave. Yes, it's the truth. And then you will have passed through it, and with mysterious consequence it will have passed through you.”About Michael Leunig http://www.leunig.com.au/ Other poems by Michael Leunig http://www.leunig.com.au/works/poems Cartoons by Leunig http://www.leunig.com.au/works/cartoons The Inner Life of Teaching and Leadership program http://www.couragerenewal.org/parker/writings/leading-from-within/ Center for Courage and Renewal http://www.couragerenewal.org/courage-to-teach/Congrats to Patrice on her new gig and all the best as you get started at the HGSE Teaching & Learning Lab! https://tll.gse.harvard.edu/ #InVinoFab Book Recommendation:The Life- Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo http://www.mariekondobooks.com/ Future ideas for the next vignette you'd like to see is ______. In an age where we can find ourselves feeling exhausted on a daily basis—beloved cartoonist Michael Leunig brings perspective. A duck helping us navigate our way through choppy waters. In this episode Leunig chats with Myke Bartlett about how we can lean into the unknown, accept melancholy as an integral part of our lives, and find joy and beauty in the uncertain. Show notes: This conversation was recorded in front of a live audience for our friends at the School of Life. You can find the images that Leunig refers to throughout this episode by visiting www.dumbofeather.com/michael-leunig Production by our digital editor Lizzie Marton. The music you hear is by Dennis Liu.
The Leunigs have two pursuits they're passionate about: encouraging young people to get involved in art and promoting Peoria as an arts center. The couple recently donated software to the Peoria Public Schools system to further student ability to produce their own comic art while they look for assistance for a Peoria mural celebration in 2018.
Most of us have heard of (and experienced) FOMO at some point. FOMO is the Fear of Missing Out and it strikes at the heart of modern life. We do things, attend things or buy things in order to avoid it, but there will always be things we miss out on. So why do we struggle with it so much? A couple of weeks ago a friend of the show (Mr Andy McLean - you may know him from such programs as Episode 124 of The Slow Home Podcast) sent Brooke and Ben a photo of a Leunig poem about JOMO, and they thought it would be a great topic to chat about on today’s poggie. JOMO is the Joy of Missing Out and the antidote to FOMO. It’s the utter delight that is saying no and doing less and choosing to not compete in the Busy Olympics. JOMO is a breath of fresh air when it feels like we’re choking on the idea that in order to be successful we need to be constantly in motion, striving and chasing the life that will make others envious. JOMO comes from a place of abundance (everything, right now, is enough) while FOMO comes from a place of scarcity (I’m scared that this will never be enough) and Brooke and Ben talk about the many different ways to apply it in life. JOMO can apply to our stuff, busy-ness, excess, social media, comparisons, keeping up with the Joneses… In all of those areas of life we can joyfully choose to see that we have enough, after which saying no becomes a relief.
