Listen in as we navigate the compelling landscape of stories and their profound impact on healing. Our guest expert passionately shares insights into the concept of the Default Mode Network in neuroscience and its activation when we daydream, which leads us into the intriguing discussion on  Dialogical Self Theory and Therapy. As we unravel the ways in which we construct self-theory from stories, we consider how to shape better, more constructive narratives as opposed to destructive ones. In an interesting contrast, we explore how narrative therapy differs from CBT. Further on, we delve into the fascinating field of brain plasticity, constraint-induced movement therapy, and the mirroring effect our brains have on the world around us. As we discuss how societies often prioritize immediate gratification over delayed gratification, we look at the possibility of counteracting pro-inflammatory stories with anti-inflammatory ones. Lastly, we cast a critical eye on the capitalistic healthcare system, discussing its transformation into a transactional entity, and its subsequent effect on burnout and emotional well-being. Join us as we question, learn, and provoke thought on the power of stories in healing.

Native Americans in professional healing professions may creatively incorporate Native ways in their work, but the path is not easy.  The same is true for those coming from a Western background that realize there is something lacking in modern medicine and are attracted to Native ways of healing. Western and Native approaches to healing may seem incompatible—linear-mechanical, biological or genetic causes versus interdependent, community and natural world imbalances—but there is a way to integrate them, to see and walk in two worlds. Not easily and not without pushback perhaps, but there is a way. Our two guests, one Native, one non-Native, have both been powerfully influenced and transformed by Indigenous wisdom and also other ways of knowing and have done the work to integrate and implement a more holistic vision of medicine. Join us as we explore how to integrate healing traditions on the next Circle for Original Thinking podcast. A teacher in many respects, Lewis believes that telling a story (or “sharing a case-study” in doctor talk), is the most effective way to teach. This conversation is helpful in shifting the way you look at your life and the stories you tell yourself that not only affect your neurological and mental health, but your physical health as well. Steve Wagner – All You Need Is Myth – Can the “Soundtrack of Our Time” Help Us Heal the Shadow and See the Light?Aired Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM ESTInterview with Music Mythologist Steve Wagner, author of “All You Need Is Myth: The Beatles and the Gods of Rock”“Of course love is more powerful than fear. Otherwise we’d be singing ‘All You Need is Fear.” — Swami BeyondanandaIn his study of “spontaneous remission,” Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona suggested that these unexplained anomalous healings were often accompanied by what he called a “change of story.” Given the dire “shituation” we as a civilization, a species and a world find ourselves in, maybe we need a collective change of story, a “spontaneous remissioning” so to speak. So … where might we go to find such a story?Hint: All you need is love. Our guest this week, “music mythologist” Steve Wagner offers an interesting and compelling thesis: That during the latter half of the 20th century, mythology “came alive” as the ancient archetypes cited by Joseph Campbell emerged through the Beatles, and other rock icons like the Stones, Elvis, Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Jim Morrison, the Who, and Brian Wilson.Unlike ancient and traditional mythologies, based on story and faith, here were real flesh-and-blood contemporaries who brought these archetypes to life, and gave us purpose and meaning. Consider that Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign song was Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow.” (I suppose if the current administration had to pick a Fleetwood Mac theme, it would have to be “Tell Me Lies”, right?)Mythology – from Greek to Nordic to Celtic to Indigenous – has always provided a stage for darkness and light to dance together. Can the modern mythos of rock culture help us shine a light on the current darkness?Join us and find out!Steve Wagner is a veteran San Francisco media personality, and member of the San Francisco Film Critic’s Circle. He was co-host, writer, and executive producer of the Bay Area television programs Reel Life and Filmtrip, reviewing over 1,000 films and interviewing over 300 actors, directors, writers, and musicians. In the 1980s, he was singer and guitarist of the Backsliders, a touring rock band that performed over eight hundred shows and opened for numerous national acts. For a decade, Steve Wagner was a director of the San Francisco Art Exchange, a gallery specializing in rock & roll photography and original album cover art. He brokered sales of many of the world’s most famous album cover original artworks, including Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon.Steve Wagner has ghostwritten or collaborated on several published books, contributed articles on music, film, and popular culture to numerous publications, and presented lectures and workshops on music, art, and mythology in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, and Boston. His book All You Need is Myth: The Beatles and Gods of Rock (Waterside, 2019), a study of the classic rock era through the lens of classical mythology, is the product of ten years of research and composition. If you’re curious how the Beatles and other “Gods of Rock” brought ancient mythology to life – and how this living mythology can inform our purpose in challenging times, please tune in this Tuesday, February 11th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET. http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/To find out more about All You Need Is Myth, please go here: http://allyouneedismyth.com/And now that we ARE back with new shows (and planning a Zoom video element after the first of the year), we invite you to help support Wiki Politiki and our mission to bring about “the great upwising” and functional politics! Well before we had writing and certainly before we had powerpoint, people were sharing stories. When it comes to suicide, we must “tell a more powerful tale” — one of resilience and redemption. When we cultivate stories that describe experiences of coming through unimaginable suicidal despair or suicide grief, storytellers “make meaning” and broader societal changes are possible. In other words, storytelling is good for the storyteller, and when done safely and effectively, it is good for the listener and can powerfully shift culture. In this interview Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona and I talk about the neurobiology and cultural implications of the power of the story to heal. Leah Lamb – Spontaneous Remission Through Spontaneous RemissioningAired Tuesday, 30 April 2019, 5:00 PM EST / 2:00 PM PSTBringing Grace, Beauty, and Love Into Our Times Through Sacred StorytellingInterview with Author and Storyteller Leah Lamb“Stick to your old story, and you’re stuck with it.” — Swami BeyondanandaCellular biologist Bruce Lipton says crisis precipitates evolution and if we look at the current crises we face — ecologic, economic, political and spiritual — we can conclude that the chances of precipitation are 100%.Those who are paying attention are alarmed and concerned. Those paying even closer attention recognize that not just our civilization, but the web of life itself is at stake. Sadly, some of those who’ve been active for years have given up in frustration. We’re on track for a train wreck they say, and only a miracle can save us.But … did you know, there is actually a template for miracles? We can begin with the phenomenon called spontaneous remission. We read about these seemingly anomalous healings all the time, or perhaps we know someone who has had one. One day, the individual is on death’s door with a “fatal illness.” The next day, they are inexplicably symptom free. This kind of miraculous change that cannot be explained through ordinary science is often deemed a Divine intervention, part of the unknowable mystery. But there might be more to it.Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona, author of Coyote Medicine, tells us that spontaneous remission is often preceded by “a change of story.” In other words, our feelings, thoughts, beliefs, and the meaning we attribute to our situation may actually change the “field” in such a way that it impacts our physical reality. Can this also be true of our collective story and beliefs, and our collective reality? That’s what my book with Bruce Lipton, Spontaneous Evolution, is all about. As we say in the book:The spontaneous remission we seek appears to be contingent upon a spontaneous re-missioning of civilization through which we change our mission from one based on survival of the individual to one that encompasses survival of the species. Our guest this week, Leah Lamb, calls herself a “sacred storyteller” and our conversation will focus on how we “unravel” the old yarn, the one that doesn’t serve our evolution, and weave ourselves a new one. The Bible says, “In the beginning was the word.” Leah reiterates that every origin story in every culture tells us, “the world is sung, spoken or chanted into existence.”Leah Lamb, MSW, works with story as a tool for personal transformation and social change. Leah has authored short stories, documentaries, and award winning PSA’s about the environment. She produced and hosted The Green Channel at Current TV.Her articles have been featured in Fast Company, Spirituality & Health Magazine, and National Geographic News Watch. She now produces an online school for sacred storytelling called Speak the Spark, and is about to release her first guide to storytelling: A REBEL TELL: A Guide Book To Seeing, Hearing, and Creating Stories In Transition Times. If you’re ready to deconstruct stories that no longer work, and build the stories that will bring us to a truly new future, please tune in this Tuesday, April 30th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET. http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/You can listen right here: http://wikipolitiki.com/archives/To find out more about Leah Lamb and her work, please go here: https://www.leahlamb.com/One more thing… How YOU and WE Can Make a DifferenceHave you noticed that regardless of which of the two political parties you vote for, neither of them seem to be willing to confront Monsanto and agribusiness? ConsciousSHIFT with Julie Ann Turner featuringSELF-TRANSFORMATION THROUGH STORY / BARBARA MAINGUY & LEWIS MEHL-MADRONAStory shapes our world - and reshaping our stories can positively transform how we experience our livesStories are the units of meaning-making that help us make sense of our world. And, as Julie Ann's ConsciousSHIFT guests Barbara Mainguy and Lewis Mehl-Madrona - co-authors of REMAPPING YOUR MIND: The Neuroscience of Self-Transformation through Story - share with us, retelling your personal, family, and cultural stories can transform your life, your relationships, and your world.Where we may have been thrown into an unhappy or even hostile story, we have ways to remap and re-story our lives ... and through conscious story-telling, we may transform the inner and outer landscapes of our lives. We'll discover a road map - traced by neuroscience - through which we may view the inner landscape of our collective minds as the territory of stories we live by. We tell ourselves and others who we are, what motivates us, how we arrived where we are today, and what kinds of challenges we face in the stories we live by. As it turns out, stories are far from passive, inert influences in our lives; they can be every bit as dangerous as they are healing. The latest neuroscience research on memory, brain mapping, and brain plasticity confirms the power storyexerts on our lives and how we experience the world. Moreover, when we engage our stories consciously,we may experience transformation and transcendence by being able to story our life differently.Join Julie Ann, Barbara and Lewis, as we go on a gentle journey to discover our inner (and outer) storytellers - and learn how to negotiate with them, to form coalitions of healthier voices, to oppose the views of more negative voices .. and in this way influence our experience, and co-creation, of our world.
