Today, we're delving into a universal experience: the challenge of control. Have you ever wondered why it can be so hard to let things organically happen? Or questioned what it is that's behind the desire to control in the first place? As much as it would be fabulous to control everything, it simply isn't possible. And, you guessed it; this rings especially true in pregnancy and parenthood. Today on Yoga| Birth| Babies, I have with me Dr. Britta Bushnell to have this conversation. Britta is the author of Transformed by Birth, a childbirth educator, a mentor to other birth professionals, and a now 3rd-time guest on this podcast! Throughout this conversation, we dive into the ins and outs of control: why we want it, how we try to get it, how it shows up as we prepare for pregnancy and beyond, and whether or not it actually serves us to have it. Furthermore, we explore the idea of how to stoke the curiosity of something without trying to manage it in a certain way. So join us as we unpack these layers, promising a conversation that will leave you with a new sense of awareness. Their 100% Grass Fed Beef Sticks are unlike anything else on the market. In fact, they were recently voted in Paleo Magazine as one of the top snacks of the year. The reason is that they are committed to making the highest quality, clean products that are free from problematic ingredients. Their beef comes from 100% grass fed cows raised entirely on natural grass pastures by family farmers right here in the USA. As a result they are healthy and happy. PaleoValley's Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks Paleovalley Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks were created to make healthy snacking easier. Their turkey sticks are made from turkeys who are allowed to live as nature intended... on organic grass pastures with plenty of sunshine, fresh air and room to exercise. The result of raising turkeys in such a natural way is a much healthier, clean protein with higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and omega-3s. Unfortunately, virtually all turkey in the USA is conventionally raised with a small portion being "free range" – a virtually meaningless term that simply means the turkeys were allowed access to the outdoors. However, most "free range" turkeys only have access to an outdoor dirt field with no pasture in sight. Their truly pasture-raised turkeys are given full access to outdoor, pesticide-free pasture with plenty of grass and insects for them to nibble on. What it means to him to step out with his new name, Joseph Anew, and how his DNA is literally changing with his new identity. Power Quotes From The Show Coming Back Home to Joy "When we are born, we are abundant. We are joyful, we are happy. The game, the lived experience is us going far from there and coming back. That's the duality, that's the journey." - Joseph Anew Law of Attraction vs Higher Frequency "Between the law of attraction and sending messages on a higher frequency, the approaches are different but it's the same concept. Different approaches cater to different audiences. When you read books like The Secret or Think and Grow Rich, you're very focused on what you want and it's not that you shouldn't get granular even if you're into Dispenza but to me with Dispenza, you're looking for a more broad version of this change. A lot of people are looking for healing for example; not a blue BMW by September 20th, 2025. In my opinion, you want to become the frequency of change to see what's there." - Joseph Anew How to Live Your Own Life "I would tell my 17-year-old self that everything is happening on purpose. Everything in your life is for a purpose. Remember that there is no time or space in dharma, really. Right now your focus is to follow your heart, find your true friends, take good care of your body, be as physically fit as you can be in a reasonable amount of investment, and await further instructions. When we go to college and everyone has to be a doctor or a lawyer or something that pays well, you lose the magic. Everyone has their unique genius, their special gifts. For example, you could be an astronaut if you want to be but you're not supposed to be; you have a different soul contract and purpose for this world." - Joseph Anew Links From Today's Show Spartan Race Intuitive Warrior Podcast Heartful: Practices to Awaken the Heart BREATHE. | Joe DiStefano | TEDxLugano 375 Bizzie Gold: Break Method | Why Instinct And Intuition Are Not The Same (Rewiring The Subconscious) Paul Chek Joe Dispenza Leonidas I 086 Creating The Unbeatable Mind With Mark Divine 410 Mark Divine | Positive Neurodiversity: Kokoro Spirit, The 5 Mountains For Inner Peace, & How To Fulfill Your Potential Paths to God: Living the Bhagavad Gita by Ram Dass Alan Watts Arnold Patent Eckhart Tolle Tony Robbins Britta Bushnell Transformational Birth Course Nathan Riley, MD, FACOG Esther Perel 463 JP Sears | This Is How Media HIJACKS Your Mind: Stop Censoring Yourself & Heal The Tyrant Within MitoZen 436 Dr. John Lieurance | Melatonin Miracle: Supra-Physiologic Dosing, Sinus Health & Ending Inflammation Paleo(Fx) Journey of Souls: Case Studies of Life Between Lives by Michael Newton Deepak Chopra Shop the Wellness Force Store breathwork.io Paleovalley – Save 15% on your ACV Complex with the code ‘JOSH' Seeking Health - Save 10% with the code 'JOSH' Organifi – Special 20% off to our listeners with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' Drink LMNT – Zero Sugar Hydration: Get your free LMNT Sample Pack, you only cover the cost of shipping Botanic Tonics – Save 40% when you use the code ‘WELLNESS40' Essential Oil Wizardry: Save 10% with the code 'WELLNESSFORCE' Cured Nutrition – Get 15% off of your order when you visit wellnessforce.com/cured + use the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Leave Wellness Force a review on iTunes Joseph Anew Facebook Instagram LinkedIn RUNGA Facebook Instagram LinkedIn About Joseph Anew Joseph Anew is an international speaker, fitness expert, entrepreneur and lifestyle coach. You don't want to miss this episode where I share some BIG news, and my close friend and guest, Britta Bushnell, helps me process it all, as she talks about the Apollo and Artemis myth and the mind-blowing way it applies to my news, and also to motherhood. Britta and I discuss phases and seasons of life, why one part of ourselves is always starved in this culture, how to transition into beginnings and endings more intentionally, and more.
In this conversation, author, mythologist and childbirth educator Britta Bushnell and I talk about the domino effect that radical transformation tends to have in our lives, and how we often end up experiencing shifts and changes to many areas of our lives rather than only one. Specifically, we dive into the experience of how to re-negotiate our intimate partnerships in the wake of major transformation - one of Britta's specialties. Britta also shares wisdom about how to meet your needs and re-parent yourself in times of radical change. We talk about what Britta has learned from supporting birthing people that can be applied to all rites of passage, and then we traverse into eight cultural ideals that influence birth, exploring how these are actually phenomena that deeply influence our entire culture, and might just represent the collective rite of passage of our times.

“Systemic racism is attached to every aspect of our society.” - Kimberly Durdin Allegra Hill & Kimberly Durdin are two black midwives who have embarked on the journey of starting their own birth center. In this episode, they share what called each of them to midwifery as well as what inspired them to the arduous task of starting a birth center. They help us understand the need for Black owned and operated birthing centers and the racial inequities faced by BIPOC birthing people, especially Black birthing parents and babies. This episode is different. I don’t have a guest to talk with, it’s just me sharing my thoughts about racism. This episode is mostly for white folks or at least non-black people. Anyone is welcome to listen, but in this episode, I am a white woman speaking to other white people about racism. There are experts on the lived experience of being Black in the U.S. (pretty much all Black people living in the U.S.) and there are white people who specialize in talking to other white people about racism. I’m not either of these. I’m an imperfect white woman learning and growing along the messy path of becoming anti-racist and that’s exactly what I want to share with you in this episode. “What we need to do is understand that internalized racism exists in each of us, it’s been cooked into the tissue of my being from the reality of living in a country BUILT on racism—and as a white woman, it’s my job to unpack what’s been put there while I may have been sleeping.” Topics we cover include: The killing of Black people What my mom has to say about unpacking racism My own racism Being imperfect and messing up What I did at a midwifery conference Shame and fear around racism Public commitments to doing more unlearning and relearning Episode Resources: Favorite Chart of Resources for Anti-Racism Work. In this episode I speak with author and physician Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona about how he brings storytelling and narrative into his healing processes. A teacher in many respects, Lewis believes that telling a story (or “sharing a case-study” in doctor talk), is the most effective way to teach. This conversation is helpful in shifting the way you look at your life and the stories you tell yourself that not only affect your neurological and mental health, but your physical health as well. What are the biological consequences of the stories that we tell ourselves? Can we rewrite our stories to better our lives? “We are the swarm of stories that surround our physical body.” - Lewis Mehl-Madrona Topics we cover include: Indiginous knowledge Narrative medicine The Power of Talking Circles Imagery & Narrative in Healing Issues of Psychology during Birthing Epigenetics vs. genetics in disease About our guest: Lewis Mehl-Madrona, MD, graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine and trained in family medicine, psychiatry, and clinical psychology. He has been on the faculties of several medical schools, most recently as associate professor of family medicine at the University of New England. He is the author of Coyote Medicine, Coyote Healing, and Coyote Wisdom, a trilogy of books on what Native culture has to offer the modern world. He has also written Narrative Medicine, Healing the Mind through the Power of Story: the Promise of Narrative Psychiatry, and, his most recent book with Barbara Mainguy, Remapping Your Mind: the Neuroscience of Self-Transformation through Story. Lewis currently teaches with the family medicine residency at Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC) in Bangor, where he does inpatient medicine, outpatient precepting, and obstetrics. He works in consultation-liaison psychiatry at EMMC and also at Acadia Hospital. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Coyote Institute for Studies of Change and Transformation. Lewis has been studying traditional healing and healers since his early days and has written about their work and the process of healing. His goal is to bring the wisdom of indigenous peoples about healing back into mainstream medicine and to transform medicine and psychology through this wisdom coupled with more European derived narrative traditions. In this episode, you get to enjoy an intimate conversation between mother and son about living with type one diabetes. Kaden was diagnosed at the young age of 2-years-old and thanks his early diagnosis for being his greatest teacher through his 18 years of navigating life with a chronic disease. This episode breeds empathy for all children living with disease, can be helpful for parents navigating a child with disease, and inspire anyone to hold space for their broken parts, no matter what they may be. Kaden and I discuss: Navigating feelings of being broken Not feeling the way the outer world expects Building empathy through acknowledging personal Holding space for big feelings Being there for yourself while helping others The role of fear in transformation “What if I don’t wake up…” Lessons from living with a chronic disease Growing through adversity “Some peoples vulnerabilities and insecurities are more out in the world than mine, and some are buried and hidden. Having diabetes taught me how to be open and vulnerable about my broken parts at a really early stage in life, and have compassion for others knowing for a fact that their insecurities exist, too.” - Kaden Kessel, 20 years old More about our featured guest: Kaden Kessel was diagnosed with type one diabetes just before his third birthday. As long as he can remember, diabetes has been a part of his life. Kaden made a pledge to himself early in his journey that he would not let diabetes prevent him from doing anything that really mattered to him. He has followed his passions relentlessly and with purpose. He has served as a JDRF Children’s Congress Delegate speaking to congressional members about the needs of the type one community at the age of seven, spoke to diabetes medical equipment maker Medtronic, and served as Walk Youth Ambassador to the One Walk in Los Angeles. Britta introduces herself and shares her feelings and musings on the state of the world, and why it's time to finally release her podcast that focuses on all the different aspects of change and transformation.
In this episode, Britta Bushnell will be sharing about the transformative journey from pregnancy to parenthood. From her recently published book, Transformed by Birth, Britta will share with us about some of the cultural ideals she has identified that impact how we prepare for birth and what each of us can do to help balance how these influence us consciously or unconsciously. Giving birth and becoming parents changes us, challenges us, and awakens us to a different identity. This journey is a rite of passage that alters our knowing of who we are. As such, it is normal to feel uncertain, anxious, or simply curious about traversing the unknown landscape of birth. There is much you can do to meet these normal changes, especially during challenging times. Birth. Rarely does it unravel as planned or expected. The uncertainty and loss of control can be very challenging for many pregnant people. It can bring up fear, make some hold tighter to a preconceived plan, or throw themselves into the hands of science and relinquish any autonomy. How does one approach such a transformation with the willingness to accept the unknown path that lies ahead? In this episode of Yoga|Birth|Babies, I speak with childbirth educator, mythologist, and author of Transformed by Birth, Britta Bushnell. Britta and I have a deep, exciting, and curious conversation about the massive transformation of birth and emergence into parenthood. She beautifully explains the 8 cultural ideals that contemporary society has created around birth. We also discuss the place of fear and pain in birth. #244 • Dr. Britta Bushnell is BACK, this time sharing her new book: Transformed By Birth: Cultivating Openness, Strength, and Resilience for the Life-Changing Journey from Pregnancy to Parenthood (Sounds True, January 28, 2020). She shares the profound opportunity for transformation that comes with motherhood. We crack open cultural birthing expectations and how they are getting us stuck. Hey mama, I have a question for you. Have you ever stood in front of the mirror asking yourself "who am I?", after becoming a mom? I know I have. Birth and becoming a mom had changed me 100%. Truth be told, I don't recognize myself. This process had challenged who I thought I was, who I am going to be and who I am in the present moment. The process of birth was my journey of relinquishing control, learning to understand myself as a woman and the roles I play as a wife and mother, as well as trusting the process and allowing to be "mothered" by wisdom, femininity, fragility, and vulnerability. The soul rupture I have experienced with birth has allowed me to step into my true and authentic self and be of service to the world in more ways I could have ever imagined! About my guest: Dr. Britta Bushnell is an award-winning childbirth educator, celebrated speaker, author, mother, and specialist in teaching audiences revolutionary new approaches to childbirth, relationship, and parenting. Britta blends her two decades of experience guiding new families with her doctoral study in mythology and psychology, bringing a fresh approach to an age-old human experience. Using her skill as a teacher, writer, storyteller, and guide, Britta challenges hidden preconceptions to help clients and audiences cultivate new ways to approach life’s most important transitions. Britta’s presentations at conferences such as DONA International, MANA, and ICEA, as well as her interviews on popular podcasts including Birthful, Informed Pregnancy, and Atomic Moms, have received rave reviews. In 2016 Britta was awarded; Educator of the Year" by the Southern California Doula Association (DASC). She is finishing her forthcoming book, Transformed by Birth: Cultivating Openness, Resilience, and Strength for the Life-Changing Journey from Pregnancy to Parenthood. Today's podcast episode is a result of synchronicity and trusting the universe! I believe that this connection happened because I have been brewing and ruminating with thoughts related to my birthing experience and the lessons that affected who I am today for months. Not only is this a beautiful example of "ask and you shall receive" but this is also so timely since this episode is being launched on Mother's Day week! Consider this my gift to mothers and their partners who have been transformed by their birth experience. I hope you will enjoy listening to this conversation and learn from it as much as I have!
