We welcome Levin Woodall, the director of Lonerider Spirits to explore their journey from being a staple craft brewery in Raleigh to launching its spirits division, including whiskey, in 2018-2019. The discussion delves into Lonerider's unique offerings like the high rye bourbon finished in sherry, tequila, and stout barrels, as well as their limited-edition wheated bourbon. Levin shares insights into the challenges and opportunities of selling craft spirits in North Carolina, the impact of COVID-19 on their business, and their expansion plans. The conversation also touches on the intricacies of North Carolina's ABC laws and the untapped potential for the state's distilling industry. Send us a Text Message.A renowned musician and drummer, known for his contributions to the iconic supergroups Free and Bad Company, reminisces about his childhood in rural Wales. Following a gig with a local cover band, The Manicas, he formed his own band, Heatwave where he did both vocals and drums that was inspired by Ringo Starr after watching him on television. His life took a pivotal turn when a coin toss determined his fate, amidst a looming deadline set by his parents. Transitioning through experiences with Black Cat Bones, he ultimately teamed up with Paul Kossoff and Free, marking the recording of the smash hit "All Right Now," subsequent tours, and the eventual decline of the group. In an era where attitudes towards drug were much different, the band grappled with Paul Kossoff's addiction, which significantly impacted their trajectory. The decision to join forces with Paul Rodgers led to the inception of Bad Company, with intriguing stories surrounding the band's name.Legends suggest that during the recording sessions for the LP "Bad Company," band members were scattered throughout the house. He reflects on his favorite Bad Company track to perform, as well as his tenure with the groups Wildlife and Lonerider. Expressing disappointment over the absence of Free and Bad Company in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, he shares anecdotes of playing with Chuck Berry and the profound moment of drumming alongside Ringo Starr, whose influence sparked his musical journey.Beyond the band scene, he released a solo record titled "Because of You" with Chicago-based: The Empty Pockets. Recounting Bad Company's final 2019 show in Las Vegas alongside Lynyrd Skynyrd, he discusses his newfound interest in composing movie scores and the significance of contributing to numerous timeless songs. The interview concludes with insights into his life beyond music.Simon Kirke Links:Official Website: https://officialsimonkirke.com/homeListen to Lonerider: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5ZYxdswbSRegLO54dTNey6 Before the Lights Links:A Heartbeat & A Guitar: Johnny Cash & the Making of Bitter Tear Docuseries: https://www.beforethelightspod.com/docuseries/bitter-tearsHire Tommy to Speak: https://www.beforethelightspod.com/public-speakingBecome a BTL Member: https://www.beforethelightspod.com/supportBefore the Lights Website: https://www.beforethelightspod.com/Get Tommy a Glass of Vino: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/beforethelights Support the Show.Follow the show on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/beforethelightspodcast/Follow the show on Face Book: https://www.facebook.com/beforethelightspodcast/Follow the show on Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@beforethelightspodcast?lang=enFollow Tommy on Face Book: https://www.facebook.com/tcanale3Rate & Review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/before-the-lights/id1501245041Email the host: beforethelightspod@gmail.com
This week's Friday Nooner might as well have been an episode of Car Talk, covering everything from classic British cars of the 1950s to Toyota minivans from the 2010s. That's because our guest was Lauren McCullough, the CEO and Co-Founder of Chapel Hill-based Tromml, an ecommerce analytics startup geared to drop-shippers of aftermarket auto parts. (We first profiled Tromml last December.) We also discussed last night's GrepBeat Happy Hour held at Lonerider's Durham location and sponsored by Fourscore Business Law; see pictures from the event and take a crack at our holiday-themed trivia questions here. Watch the full episode on LinkedIn here and Facebook here.

Sumit Vohra would likely be successful at whatever business he chose to run--he's smart, hard-working, dedicated to his community and philanthropic. So he chose beer. Or maybe it chose him. What began as a hobby became a side project when he was still working in the tech world. And eventually that side project became today's Lonerider: a Raleigh brewery with 3 locations in the Triangle (and recently announced plans for a 4th) and a multi-state distributorship. We talked about to Sumit about naming beers, what the term "craft beer" even means the days, and what Raleigh can do for small businesses. And we talked about the newest Lonerider location in Five Points, their first to feature in-house food ("the best grilled cheese in the state," says Vohra). Feel free to enjoy this episode (responsibly) with a Lonerider beer! Please support the businesses who support us: Papa Murphy's Take N Bake Pizza of Raleigh and Steele Residential.Subscribe to Podcast Raleigh on your favorite podcast sites so you never miss an episode, and if you enjoy it we'd love for you to rate or read a comment:Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/podcast-raleigh/id1458907220Google: https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/ps/Inzk5woxrsjwf3zhd5vv3av4yeiStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/podcast-raleighSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6b3dVvLJfO0EqvDGQaFTAP

Mitch Marathon Month continues with... STEVE OVERLAND of FM. He's got a new band with Bad Company's Simon Kirke and Thunder's Chris Childs called LONERIDER and their terrific debut album is Attitude (which received at 90% rating from melodicrock.com's Andrew McNiece). During the interview he discusses how the band got together, Wildlife and Swan Song Records, Thunder (& Terraplane), how is Lonerider different than FM, working with Alan Parsons, why the band broke up in the '90s, developing a 'sound', using backing tracks in concert, and much more. Lonerider Brewing celebrates 10 years of "Ales for Outlaws" At 10 years old Lonerider Brewing is part of the Old Guard in North Carolina craft beer. Like many southern states, North Carolina was slow to change outdated beer laws. They plan to celebrate throughout the year, the big party was in April but they'll continue to brew up special beers to mark the milestone. Head brewer Galen Smith joined us this week to talk about his time with Lonerider. We discuss going from homebrewer to pro and what his tips are for the aspiring homebrewer. Smith also shares his thoughts on beer trends, including the Brut IPA and whether it's fading fad or here to stay. We sip some Pistols at Dawn and discuss its evolution, get the scoop on their new Wake Forest taproom, and just bit of mention on their newest venture, Lonerider Spirits.
