For a long time, ivy conjured images of all things pagan, superstitious, gluttonous, debauched, and morbid. For those reasons, it would be forbidden from churches and Christian homes. Today, it's a classic symbol of Christmas. In July of 2018, New York School Talk put out an article entitled, “The Power of Vulnerability in the Classroom”. In the article, author Vivett Dukes quotes educator Whitney Hollins, who writes, “being vulnerable is often viewed as synonymous with being weak.” Therein lies the problem. If being vulnerable requires us to take chances, to think ‘outside the box' and change course, we wonder if it is worth the risk? Maybe this is the best time to be vulnerable. Especially for teachers. The worldwide pandemic has created such fear, apprehension and disconnectedness that maybe, just maybe being more vulnerable is the antidote. What have we got to lose? Let's just change it up. In this episode, we challenge teachers to think about taking the risk to teach more vulnerably-to teach in a more humane way by sharing with their students who they are as people without worrying if this new found vulnerability will cause them to lose control over their classrooms. Being human, forgiving and compassionate and sharing a bit of yourself in terms of your likes and dislikes, in an appropriate manner, might be just the way to reduce behavioral issues and student apathy. Give your students a bit of a window into who you are and they will flock to your class. When teachers are more vulnerable and more human, students feel a greater sense of connectedness and trust. Experts agree those components of connectedness and trust must be present for students to truly learn. So…let's show just how human we all are. Perhaps this is the best time to do so. Uncanny Japan - Exploring Japanese Myths, Folktales, Superstitions, History and Language

I want to celebrate my fiftieth episode by reading my yokai story, "Sand Walls, Paper Doors" from my book A Robe of Feathers and Other Stories. This is the one that got me my book deal, my agent, and my best friend. Also, yokai, lots of yokai. I'm also going to announce a super-sekrit project Rich Pav and I have just embarked on. Hint: Horror Audio Drama. Thank you for listening, sharing, and reaching out these past three and a half years. I'm looking forward to the next fifty episodes! terrie You can also find me on: Twitter: https://twitter.com/UncannyJapan Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/uncannyjapan/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thersamatsuura Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/uncannyjapan/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqAtoUS51HDi2d96_aLv95w Website: https://www.uncannyjapan.com/ Notes: Intro/Outro by Julyan Ray Matsuura. I’m really happy to say this is my 50th episode of Uncanny Japan. I started the podcast on October 30, 2016. So it’s taken about three and a half years to get here, and I’m really happy I’m here. And I’m happy you’re here, too. One of the reasons I started Uncanny Japan was because given my circumstances I thought I had a bit of a different perspective on Japanese culture and I wanted to share that. But that wasn’t the only reason. Doing this was also a way of getting through a very difficult time in my life. As fate would have it, things got even more difficult before they got better. And they were just starting to get a lot better when boom now, we have this heinous virus that is ravaging the world. The podcast has always been something I look forward to, a means for escape even. And I really hope the shows can also help you put down the outside world for a few minutes as well. Since it’s my 50th episode, I want to give a couple thank yous. First, I want thank the guy who without his help this show never would have been or be. Rich Pav. He’s the one who lent me my first binaural mic and has stood on the sidelines and cheered me on as well as been master of everything sound and tech related. If you don’t believe in miracles, just listen to my first episode that I did all by myself and compare it to now. I also want to thank all my Patrons. They are all so wonderful and they’re the other reason I’m still doing this show. Because without their support I couldn’t afford to do this at all. I care for and appreciate every single one of them. And finally, I want to thank you, dear listeners,  your messages, emails, reviews, or just subscribing to the show. If I didn’t think anyone was listening, this really wouldn’t have lasted too long. For my 50th episode I want to announce some fun news I’m very excited about. If you remember the past episode, 49, the cheesy one about finding an amabie, well, that was such a joy to make that I started thinking about doing something different, longer, horror-related, and involving this old house I’m living in. Rich Pav and I have spent entire days brainstorming and outlining and scripting a horror audio drama that we’re going to start recording soon. This is going to be so much fun, I can’t even. It’ll be 11 episodes, with patrons getting early access, bonus content, behind the scenes, bloopers, stuff like that. This is going to be a grab your headphones and turn off the lights kinda show. Of course, Uncanny Japan will come out as usual, twice a month. The audio drama will be and Uncanny Japan presents kinda thing. I’ll let you know here how that’s going and when it’ll be getting it up. Now for today’s episode: I haven’t done a story in awhile and I think I’ve only ever done one of my stories here, way back at the beginning in episode 7, I did a very short piece I wrote about the senninbari, or thousand stitched belt. Today I want to read a short story that is dear to my heart. It’s the first story I wrote after I decided I want to seriously do this writing thing, back in 1993 or 4 or something. Also, it’s quite autobiographical. I’ll go into more details about which parts are really real and which are made up, over on Patreon. Another reason this story means a lot to me is that it’s the reason I got the first book deal. I cold queried a publisher with this story and got my first book deal. It’s also the story that helped woo get my rockin’ agent and it’s the story my sound/tech man, Rich Pav, read when we only knew each other on Twitter and he reached out to message me how much he really loved it. Oh, and yokai. There are quite a few yokai involved in it as well. So anyway, it’s got a lot of good memories attached to it. And in this chaotic time, for my 50th episode, I think I want to share it with you. It’s called Sand Walls, Paper Doors. *story* (Sorry I can't transcribe it. I only have the audio rights.) Thank you all for listening. Stay safe and I’ll talk to you again in two weeks.

Well, hello! It’s been a long time coming, but finally, here is a new episode of Reviewing the Reviews! This time I dig into the reviews of my favorite local theme park. This episode goes into detail about the psyche of a disgruntled ex-McDonald’s worker, the thievery of prescription glasses, and a bold new policy that so shook a man to his very core, that he staged war with the establishment on Yelp. So, join me as we tackle today’s review. On this one we’re discussing masks, and rightly so its titled, the man of a thousand masks. Kind of like what are the different faces we show society to cover up what’s really going on inside. Sometimes it’s a big front to protect ourselves at other times it’s the true demon we really are. Its somewhat of a follow up from our last episode where we spoke with Joshua shea and his porn addiction and the many masks, he wore to hide it. Today heath and I share our stories regarding masks, from alcohol, to women and I share the story of how I had to hardness some strength to perform CPR this past weekend. PTSD, anxiety, depression, suicide, addiction and mental health. In this episode we interview Joshua Shea, a former city council member of central Maine, a prominent magazine publisher, and film festival founder. This was the persona everyone saw on the outside, however, on the inside he had been battling porn addiction for 20 years. The porn addiction would eventually lead to the lowest point in his life when he was arrested for talking to an underaged girl, unbeknown to him, in a chatroom. This valley ultimately lead him to serving six months in jail, becoming a registered sex offender, and with continued support and therapy a beacon of hope for others. Now, you maybe thinking why interview Josh on this sensitive and maybe controversial topic? Well you see, Josh has made it his mission to share this deep dark story with the goal of stopping this from happening to someone else. Check out his book on Amazon titled “He’s A Porn Addict…Now What? An Expert And Former Addict Answers Your Questions”. Why is it like that: stories of PTSD, anxiety, depression and suicide

Today we are discussing “endurance”, endurance through the rough patches in life, the low times, when there is no light at the end of tunnel, the long haul. Today i posted an image on our social media of a person climbing the side of a steep mountain, it’s not easy mental health is not a downhill battle…. Everything is not always good; it isn’t always gravy. It’s going to be hard; you’re going to have to endure and break free from those hard times. We are only human and can bear so much, but with that said there is always someone no matter what, that is willing to help, whether it’s your family, close friends or even us. Today I’d like to share some stuff I’m going through myself in relation to the topic of endurance. Please follow us on Social Media. Bom momento, nobre colega!
