What do we discover about our Father's heart in the biblical passage about Jesus' baptism? Listen in as Scott Rodgers and Donnie Mosher discuss Matthew 3:13-16.
Romans 5:11 says, 'So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.' How can friendship with God affect every area of our lives? Is this just a nice platitude, or does being a friend of God affect our daily experience? In this conversation, Scott Rodgers shares how friendship with God means we have peace with Him, can find purpose in our trials, and have confidence in our ultimate future. These things should be at the very core of our Christian experience.
Continuing in our teaching series in the book of Romans, Scott Rodgers takes us on a journey of context as a way to better understand the text of Romans 4.
When you move through the city, you move through mediation. This is because what we call media and what we call the city (or the urban) are in a nexus: they are intimately connected. On the one hand, the practices, the rhythms and the motilities of urban living compel certain uses, exposures and desires in relation to media technologies, forms and industries. On the other hand, these media forms, infrastructures, and industries inhabit – and are increasingly ‘built-into' – urban environments. Many might quite reasonably point out that media represent the city and urban life, in film, television, literature, news, video games and apps. In this opening episode, however, we introduce a focus on the city itself is a mediating environment. We begin to think how, through the urban we can find new ways to think about media, and how, through media, we can find new ways to think about the city. The aim here is modest. Rather than presenting a general framework for understanding the mediated city in the past, now and forever more, we start with four points of reference. These will loosely guide how we'll think about the mediated city in the episodes to come: surfaces, depths, fragments and publics. Thinkers discussed: Simon Wreckert (Google Maps Hacks); Scott McQuire (An Archaeology of the Media City: Towards a Critical Cultural History of Mediated Urbanism); Shannon Mattern (Deep Mapping the Media City / Code + Clay … Data + Dirt: Five Thousand Years of Urban Media); David Henkin (City Reading: Written Words and Public Spaces in Antebellum New York); Iain Borden (Hoardings); Marshall McLuhan (Understanding Media: The Extension of Man); Friedrich Kittler (The City is a Medium); Georg Simmel (The Metropolis and Mental Life); Erving Goffman (Behavior in Public Places: Notes on the Social Organization of Gatherings); William Mitchell (E-topia: "Urban Life Jim - But Not as We Know It”) Eric Gordon and Adriana de Souza e Silva ( Net Locality: Why Location Matters in a Networked World); Kurt Iveson (Publics and the City); Michael Warner (Publics and Counterpublics) Music: ‘The Mediated City Theme' by Scott Rodgers (https://soundcloud.com/rodgers_scott/the-mediated-city-theme). In this episode of First to 15, we're joined three-time Paralympian and 2004 Paralympic Bronze Medalist Scott Rodgers. It was 1993 when Scott was first introduced to what was then called wheelchair fencing and is now known in the U.S. as parafencing. He quickly learned he was pretty good at it, and before long he was earning medals at the national and then international level.Speaking of international fencing, Scott competed at the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney, earned a bronze medal at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens, and returned to represent Team USA at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing.Visit the USA Fencing websiteSupport our Parafencing to Paris campaignFollow USA Fencing on InstagramRead a transcript for this episode
How do God's sovereignty and our responsibility work together to further His redemptive plans? Make no mistake; God is always at work. But how? And when? Scott Rodgers takes us on a journey in Esther chapter two as we learn from this courageous young woman how to walk in God's favor. The very thing He uses for His glory and His purposes.
Receiving eternal life requires faith. Living the life God calls us to requires faithfulness. In our pursuit of revival, Scott Rodgers shares what we should keep in mind about what's to come when choosing to follow Jesus more closely. In his words to the church in Smyrna, from Revelation chapter two, Jesus has some encouraging, hope-filled instruction for us all.
This is a short message to listeners of The Mediated City podcast series. UK listeners, and certainly my students, will know that the University and College Union (UCU) is currently taking industrial action. This action centres on two disputes. The first is focused on pensions: a typical member of the USS pension scheme is set to suffer a dramatic 35% drop in their guaranteed retirement income if planned cuts go ahead. The second dispute relates to four wider areas: pay, casualisation, pay gaps and workloads in UK Higher Education. These are all areas which really are reaching a breaking point; at many institutions, including my own, for example, an inexcusably high proportion of teachers are paid by the hour, and more often than not, deliver their excellent teaching by working many extra hours unpaid. While it was tempting to imagine that this podcast could continue around the strikes, it didn't take too long to remember that this whole thing is possible because of what I (your host, Scott Rodgers) do for my job, teaching and researching at my institution, Birkbeck, University of London. In that workplace, I am a member of the UCU, and am joining my colleagues on the strike action. The strike action means we are withdrawing our labour, including our teaching. And it also includes a digital component, called the ‘digital picket' which is meant to underscore that the digital spaces in which we labour are no different than the physical ones. The upshot is that our sixth episode, and possibly our seventh as well, will be withdrawn from this season. If you want to know more about what's going on in this dispute, in the meantime, you can find general information on the main UCU website: https://www.ucu.org.uk/article/12100/Ten-days-of-strike-action-begins-at-UK-universities Music: ‘The Mediated City Theme' by Scott Rodgers License: CC BY-NC (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/)

In this episode, we speak with Sam Kinsley, Senior Lecturer in Human Geographies at the University of Exeter, in Devon, England, and the inaugural Co-Editor-in-Chief of the open access journal Digital Geography & Society. Sam is interested in spatialities and geographical imaginations of technology and the future; about how our situated existence is inherently technical, as well as the stories we tell about technologies in our daily lives. He is a close interpreter, and occasional translator, of the work of late French philosopher Bernard Stiegler. So we took the opportunity to ask Sam about his own work, as well as Stiegler's writing, and how it might be a way to step back and think through how and why we might think about digital data, and the systems through which data are collected and mobilised, as ‘industrial-scale' systems of memory. This week we're joined by Scott Rodgers - a guy who, over the course of his career, has done a little bit of everything in the entertainment industry. Although his family wasn't necessarily "religious," Scott got involved in church as a teen. He later joined The Dingees, a ska/punk band signed to Tooth & Nail Records. He went on to become an actor, starring in a variety of shows including "Key & Peel" and "Reno 911!," as well as several independent films. He's directed movies like "The Dramatics" and "Date.," and now works with budding creators looking to write and produce their own projects. Scott recently jumped back into music with "Dead Drummer Friends," a garage/funk/soul project that he worked on throughout the pandemic. You can stream his album "Hit Machine" wherever you listen to music! Follow Scott on Instagram (@misterscottrodgers & @deaddrummerfriends) and twitter (@mrscottrodgers), and stream "The Dramatics" on Amazon Prime!
In this episode we speak with Yanni Loukissas, Associate Professor of Digital Media in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication at Georgia Tech, based in Atlanta, USA. With a background spanning design, computing, and ethnography, Yanni's work has involved a series of unique approaches to thinking critically about data and its materialities. His book, All Data are Local, was the starting inspiration for many of the topics we discussed, which included: negotiating the relationships of various professional and intellectual identities; Yanni's distinct take on data settings and their locality; his commitment to practice-based work, which has included composing algorithms and curating data; and his views on more useful ways to approach data visualisation. In this episode we speak with Paula Bialski, Associated Professor of Digital Sociology at University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. Paula’s research focuses on the impact of digital media on working cultures, communication and the concept of intimacy. In this podcast we discuss her current book project entitled Slow Software which is based on a two-year ethnographic study examining the operating modes and workplace cultures of software companies in Berlin. Paula’s ethnographic methods bring the human body and concepts like exhaustion or friendship into the mix as sometimes overlooked elements of digital materiality. The months of May and June had strong sales numbers across the board for the retail automotive industry, and these results echo the success we saw leading up to the outbreak of the Coronavirus earlier this year. With these robust numbers, many dealers are turning their attention to bringing their marketing departments back to full-speed. Here to discuss the fluidity of today’s various marketing methods, is Scott Rodgers, Co-founder of Tier10, an award-winning advertising agency that specializes in the automotive industry. In addition to concerns around the Coronavirus, there is now a Facebook advertising boycott that hundreds of companies are participating in. Largely, a political issue, this boycott was sparked by disagreements surrounding the ways in which Facebook vets, approves, and censors advertising content on its platform. Now the question for small tier-three dealers becomes – Do I still invest $20,000 a month into Facebook campaigns, or do I take that money elsewhere? Another fluid situation that Scott tackles, is how dealers make decisions regarding their brand messaging during politically and socially turbulent times. In a recent article from Automotive News, Scott discusses why his agency decided to film two versions of the same commercial for their dealer and OEM clients; one with people wearing masks, and one without. At the end of the day, Scott believes that it is the agency’s responsibility to provide and level of authenticity to the particular brand’s message. To hear more insight and advice from Scott, be sure to watch our full interview above. https://www.cbtnews.com/tier10s-scott-rodgers-discusses-dealership-marketing-during-socially-turbulent-times/
Community is everything, and Scott Rodgers teaches us how the Holy Spirit does His most transformative work in that community of faith.
Scott Rodgers used to drink protein shakes every morning and night as a young kid to bulk up. A football player from Long Island and the son of a Marine, Rodgers’ blue collar work ethic has driven his successful career. After a record breaking career at Notre Dame, Scott became a dominant force and face in pro lacrosse. Heading into the inaugural PLL season he was expected to start in the net for Atlas, yet a freak combination of illnesses during Training Camp sidelined him for Week 1. In this interview, Scott discusses his disciplined upbringing, how he started playing goalie and what he defines as a great teammate and leader. He also explains why he doesn’t consider himself a “Notre Dame guy” and how he views coaching Gen Z. Please rate, review and leave a question that you would like us to ask an athlete on future shows. In this episode of Data Materiality, we speak with Shannon Mattern, Professor of Anthropology at The New School for Social Research, New York City, USA. Shannon’s work spans a very wide range of topics – from archives and libraries to the deep histories of media infrastructures and the city. Our interview ranged from Shannon’s recent essay on the narratives surrounding 5G technologies, to her explorations of media, materiality, time and city. We not only speak about these topics as arenas of her research, but also as things that have often taken root and shape through Shannon’s teaching, pedagogy and exchanges with students. In this episode of Data Materiality, we speak with Vicki Mayer, Professor of Communication at Tulane University, New Orleans, USA. Vicki’s research on media production and consumption – and its relationships with economic and political transformations in the media and creative industries – is well known. In our chat we speak about her field research on the arrival of Google to a remote corner of the Netherlands, where the tech giant is building Western Europe’s largest data centre. Not only does Vicki provide a compelling peek into the peculiar places that data centres are, but also how they (particularly Google data centres) might be seen as sites of aura as well. This gives rise to questions about power in the contemporary era, not to mention whether data centres really provide the economic benefits they so often promise.
