EPISODE 78 - “FILM NOIR - Part 1 - WHAT IS NOIR?” - 3/10/2025 Have you ever wondered what exactly is film noir? TCM's EDDIE MULLER describes it this way: “Film Noir is all about treachery, deceit, and paranoia. You're never quite sure what is going on, who you can trust, or what dreadful pitfall waits around the corner.” This dark and twisted film genre popped up after WWII as a quiet cynicism began to creep into the national consciousness. In film noir, there is always an underbelly of darkness that comes out to play. And within the darkness, the shadows, and the neon lights, lie many stories of crime, dishonesty, adultery, murder, and mayhem. This week, we present the first in a special three-part series that delves into the darkest of genres where crooked cops, gangsters, torch singers, barflies, and other seedy character's live, love and kill. NYEAH SEE!? Who says that? Who says “Nyeah See”? Is it Jimmy Cagney? Edward G. Robinson? That tiny mobster guy in the Looney Tunes cartoon? I can't exactly remember. March is classic Film Noir five days a week and we're dramatically calling it “THE LEFT HAND ENDEAVOR” because it's cool and it makes us feel cool to say it. Bob and Angela LOVE this shit so as far as they're concerned, it's bangers all month long and today is no exception. We're tackling our third Stanley Kubrick movie for the show with one of his earliest pictures and his first “serious” film (as he sort of puts it) and it just happens to be one of the best heist movies of all time. Johnny Clay's got some boys together but some of the elements are a bit volatile. There's some sad girls and some bad girls. Crooked cops, clown masks and some Pro Wrestling. Of course we're speaking of “THE KILLING” from 1956 starring Sterling Hayden, Elisha Cook & Marie Windsor. One of the most thrilling noirs this month and you really feel that end sequence. But why is it called “The Killing”, though? Which kill is “The Killing”? Of course you can often find these older movies online if you know where to look. The city was draped in Noirvember's shroud, and Not a Bomb was the beacon in this murky storm. In sauntered Sophia from the Moviestruck podcast, a siren with a penchant for unraveling tales buried in shadows. Deception, detectives as sharp as whiskey, dames with allure as lethal as a bullet, thugs with a dime-a-dozen sneer, and the haunting symphony of trains set the stage for our rendezvous. We were all set for a tango in the darkness, dissecting two classics that echoed through time, a clash of eras bathed in secrets. '90s Narrow Margin and its '52 predecessor, The Narrow Margin, each holding court in their own epoch. The former—a flop, a silver screen misfire, while the latter—a darling of the Academy, embraced universally by critics. But here's the kicker, dear listeners: will our novice sleuths echo the choir of critics or dance to a newer tune? Will they find solace in the nostalgic embrace of '52 or dare to crave the thrill of something fresher?Take a seat, for this discourse will have your nerves as taut as a piano wire. The air was thick with anticipation, charged with the essence of unraveling mysteries, secrets, and the palpable taste of suspense. Not a Bomb was ready to detonate the truth behind these cinematic enigmas, and Sophia was our guiding light through the labyrinth of twists and turns. Buckle up, for this discussion was set to be a ride along the edges of your seat, a thrill that Noirvember couldn't contain.Narrow Margin is directed by Peter Hyams and stars Gene Hackman, Anne Archer, James B. Cannabis comic and activist Ngaio Bealum joins us for our SEASON TWO PREMIERE, and he's selected two movies that are real gateway drugs to classic cinema. Both films are tense AF depictions of desperate men trying to pull off that one last score. Both movies were also made by domineering filmmakers, so, as Ngaio says, this could have been our asshole director episode. First up, is THE KILLING (1956), a cutting-edge noir from a young Stanley Kubrick making his first Hollywood studio film. Made on a shoestring budget, Kubrick still shows more than mere glimpses of his future promise with overlapping timelines, a camera that appears to move through walls and furniture, and brutal violence that is still shocking today. Backing Kubrick is a noir who's who with Sterling Hayden putting together an intricate racetrack heist, Timothy Carey AKA God Hilliard as a deranged hitman, Elisha Cook, Jr. as the weak link in the chain, and Marie Windsor as Elisha's conniving wife. There's also a hairy wrestler airplane spinning cops! What more can you ask for? How about a bunch of sweaty dudes driving truckloads of nitro across treacherous South American terrain where any bump in the road--and there are loads of bumps--could send them all sky high? Well, that's what we've got in Ngaio's second pick, Henri-Georges Clouzot's THE WAGES OF FEAR from 1953. This movie is more of a gateway drug to French cinema that classic film as a whole, but the last hour or so of it is a real white-knuckler so you'll really want to heed the weed recommendations for this one to get you through all that suspense. "Don't smoke a sativa with this one," Ngaio warns. The Killing is streaming for free with ads on Pluto The Wages of Fear is streaming on HBOMax, Criterion Channel & Kanopy You can follow Ngaio on Twitter and Instagram at @ngaio420. We hope to have him back on the show soon. Hosts: Bob Calhoun, Philena Franklin & Greg Franklin Theme song and closing theme: Chaki the Funk Wizard Cory Sklar is on assignment but he will be back for our Psychedelic Kaiju episode in February. The movies will be WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS (1966) & MATANGO (1963).

The Killing (1956) directed by Stanley Kubrick. Stanley Kubrick's account of an ambitious racetrack robbery is one of Hollywood's tautest, twistiest noirs. Aided by a radically time-shuffling narrative, razor-sharp dialogue from pulp novelist Jim Thompson, and a phenomenal cast of character actors, including Sterling Hayden, Coleen Gray, Timothy Carey, Elisha Cook Jr., and Marie Windsor, The Killing is both a jaunty thriller and a cold-blooded punch to the gut. And with its precise tracking shots and gratifying sense of irony, it's Kubrick to the core. You know we're talking about a master filmmaker when this channel has already covered more than half of the man's titles and we're only now getting to this gritty crime classic. The Killing was early in Stanley Kubrick's career, so he wasn't yet at the top of his game as he would be for the next 40+ years. Still, there's plenty of examples of the technical prowess that would come to be trademark Kubrick. Fittingly, the complex plot even resembles a chess game. We weren't seeing eye to eye about the work of tough-but-sometimes-sweet Sterling Hayden or the ultra-fatal femme fatale Marie Windsor. We start with Jules Dassin’s Paris jewelry heist Rififi (1955), with Jean Servais as Tony le Stéphanois putting together a crew after five years inside. Next up is Stanley Kubrick’s racetrack heist The Killing (1956), with Sterling Hayden as Johnny Clay putting together a crew after five years inside. Finally we have psychedelic Turkish museum heist Topkapi (1964) with Melina Mercouri seducing her crew into doing anything she asks them to.Also: The Man with the Golden Arm (1955). Does this smell like chloroform? Reservoir Dogs? Ocean’s Eight (2018). Point Blank (1967)/Payback (1999). Dennis Haysbert again. Marie Windsor. Officer Steve. Bawst’n. James Edwards. The floor is lava. Oil wrestling. Turkish moustache wrangler. Actor’s insurance. The Wax and the Furious. Suction and tension. We play a game of “Stop! Thief!” then do some honorable mentions.

Classified as a “B” movie, The Narrow Margin rises above its “B” label and shines as a great example of film noir from the early 1950s. Directed by Richard Fleischer and starring the “gravel voiced, stoney faced & grizzled looking actor” Charles McGraw, Marie Windsor and Jacqueline White it tells the story of a woman planning to testify against the mob that must be protected against her assassins on the train trip from Chicago to Los Angeles. Remade in 1990 with Gene Hackman and Anne Archer. The original is generally accepted as a superior film. Well, Bob and I sure enjoyed it!

Stanley Kubrick's 3rd film, "The Killing," was a box office bomb due to a poor release plan from United Artists and virtually no marketing. Luckily, the film was critically praised and has grown in stature since its release in 1956. It's a film noir about a race track heist gone wrong with the fantastic Sterling Hayden leading the charge, and the last film in our Heist series. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we finish this series with Kubrick's early classic. We talk about the story and how revolutionary it was at the time to tell a story that was told out of chronological sequence. We discuss the actors and the roles they play in this great film, particularly Sterling Hayden, Elisha Cook Jr. and Marie Windsor. We talk about the look of the film yet how Kubrick and his cinematographer, Lucien Ballard, were at odds throughout production. And we chat about why this film was so ahead of its time and why it's largely considered an important classic that's worth discussing. It's a great finish to our current Heist series. Listen in!

FORCE OF EVIL shows us that small-time graft is less dangerous than big-time rackets that have the law, the trust of the public, and the appearance of respectability on their side. Ultimately, the crime is the system itself, and the very philosophical underpinnings of capitalism are liable. And while Abraham Polonsky's courage in addressing these themes is remarkable, the degree of craft he exhibits as a rookie director is nothing short of astonishing. With Ira Wolfert, he co-authors a script so rich in its ability to expose the poverty of our dreams, and so stylized and impossibly catchy in its dialogue, that it can't help but feel more real than the real. With this script, and uncommon directing talent, Polonsky coaxes career-best performance from John Garfield, Thomas Gomez, and Marie Windsor. And with Director of Photography George Barnes, Polonsky frames some of the most beautiful and narratively rich shots in film history. FORCE OF EVIL may be the noir that most perfectly captures the ambivalent and fearful relationship Americans had to the great cities and great institutions that were the sclerotic backbone of the country after WWII.
