We often use the analogy of the River to describe how each and every one of us has a unique role to play in supporting the vulnerable children and families of Houston. One of the reasons why we need hands both upstream and downstream, helping from all sides, is because the foster care system does not exist in isolation. It's shaped by—and deeply connected to—a range of other social challenges. One such challenge is homelessness and the circumstances that lead to it. The Greater Houston area holds over 3,000 people experiencing homelessness, including those in shelters and those unsheltered. This issue of homelessness has a direct impact on the foster care community—10% of children across Texas enter foster care due to housing issues. One thing is clear—any effort to support the foster care community is incomplete without also addressing the realities of homelessness. Joining us to discuss this key topic is Doug Meikle.Doug is a first-generation immigrant from Scotland who loves the city of Houston. A few years ago, he changed the course of his life by leaving behind the world of engineering and management to found a nonprofit along with two of his friends. TrueWorks focuses on integrating Christian faith with the world of work. Doug is now the CEO of Star of Hope, Houston's largest mission to the homeless, and remains the board chair of TrueWorks. In this episode, Doug shares the connection our faith should have with the work we choose to do, the circumstances that contribute to homelessness, the importance of collaboration with other organizations and individuals across our city, and much more.Find the show notes and links to anything we discussed here: riversideproject.org/doug-meikle-37
Coffee and beer are, when you think about it, strange bedfellows. One gets you out of bed in the morning, provides stimulation and impetus, while the other (hopefully) tells you that it's time to slow down and kick back. Perhaps it's the inherent balance this creates which is why I can't do without either.I first got into coffee about 10 years ago, and for all wants and purposes in this podcast we'll call it ‘third wave coffee' (it's a bit like craft beer, in that it is a term that was invented to definite a subculture within an industry, but it just ended up getting abused and misused.) For me, the appeal of third wave coffee was exactly the same as the one I found in craft beer: big, bold, unusual flavours from small producers. Once I'd discovered it, I was the owner of an Aeropress, hand grinder and scales faster than you can say “Yirgacheffe.” But like beer, my coffee journey has been one of peaks and troughs. In the early days I lusted after the rarest, most interesting coffees I could find, even once spending $15 on a single cup of pour over Colombian Gesha at a fancy American coffee spot. That was the peak. Then, just like with beer and my lust for cask bitter and precise lager, my coffee enthusiasm settled out. An automatic filter coffee machine replaced my manual equipment. A good pour of espresso, like a great pint of cask, was best left to the experts. I was happier now. My interest in coffee, however, lingers on. So when I was invited for a tour of Marsden's Dark Woods Coffee (hands down one of the best roasters in the UK, in my opinion) I couldn't refuse. What I love about Dark Woods is both how approachable their coffees are, and their seemingly unwavering commitment to quality beans. This was evident in every part of the process I saw during my visit, from the roastery itself, down to the perfect espresso I tried immediately afterwards. It was also great to see that they're not limiting how they express their coffees, as I also got to try hopped, and fruited coffees, plus even bourbon barrel-aged coffee.Perhaps there are more similarities between modern beer and coffee than I care to admit. This is why I was thrilled to get a chance to sit down and chat with two of Dark Woods' founding partners, Paul Meikle-Janney and Damian Blackburn. I was curious to see where their perception of coffee culture is, and how what their industry is experiencing relates to what's currently happening in beer. It's a compelling listen, and I'd like to thank Paul and Damian for taking the time to chat. If you enjoyed this, then why not check out our recent article by Tom Wilkinson (also of Dark Woods) who recently wrote for Pellicle about the place of third wave coffee in a post-craft world. Then we switch gears and talk about issues specific to Irish agriculture, which also has some relevance in the UK context. And so, we discuss the use of nitrogen fertilisers, soil health and whether the cuts to the size of the national cattle herd are inevitable. Bees can generate five pounds of honey a day under prime nectar-gathering conditions. Numerous factors make that possible and researchers like William Meikle work on modeling honey bee populations, keeping track of how different stressors might affect honey bee colony health. Listen and learn What measures are important for beehive modeling and why, How bees are able to keep their brood area at a constant warm temperature, and What bee health productivity stressors are being analyzed and why, such as neonicotinoid exposure. Willliam G. Meikle is a research entomologist with the United States Department of Agriculture. He studies the colony-level behavior of bees through placing sensors on colonies and monitoring them over long periods of time. This can gather evidence for how they might respond to sub lethal pesticides and other stressors. He's therefore constantly measuring things like hive weight, temperature, CO2, and internal humidity. These measures are akin to numbers from a monitor your doctor might have used to check your health. Various measures might indicate your activity, from sleeping to eating to drinking a cup of coffee. No, bees don't drink coffee, but they do get exposed to neonicotinoids, which are a common type of agriculture insecticide affecting bees. Even at low amounts, he says he can see some sort of impact. Higher levels seem to cause bees to stop foraging, for example. Temperature is another abiotic factor he monitors. Bees have an amazing ability to keep the center area, the brood area, quite warm and constant. Bee social behavior is more than just an inclination. Rather, they work as a superorganism, teaming up and taking turns to use their thoracic muscle movement to warm the center of the hive one by one. A healthy brood is dependent on this constant warmth, and bee population increase can only happen with successful brood rearing. Listen in for more indications of bee colony health. How can we manage people who are doing creative work? On the one hand, letting someone do what they want feels incredibly risky. On the other hand, creativity requires a degree of freedom, experimentation and agency. That's a particular problem in the creative fields, but it's also a broader challenge. In the 21st century, the jobs people are doing are increasingly ones that require some element of creativity. Creativity is that it doesn't always lend itself to being managed in traditional ways. Unlike setting someone a task where they slavishly need to follow instructions, creative tasks require a different form of supervision. The challenge with that is that as organisations try to mitigate the risk of creative activities, it's very easy to end up in situations where responsibility is transferred for the creative task, but the requisite amount of control to deliver it isn't. My guest is David Meikle. He's a consultant to the advertising market, where he helps companies to be more effective at hiring and managing advertising agencies. Small Spark Theory: a marginal gains approach to new business and marketing

Welcome to Episode 96. My guest is David Meikle, the author of ‘Tuning Up', a book about improving performance and reducing stress in advertising and marketing. This chat will be particularly interesting for you if you're finding the pressure and stress of working in an agency unmanageable, or you're responsible for creating positive agency environment in which your team can thrive. We discuss: - why David describes the relationship between the agency, the client and the client's procurement department as the triangle of doom. - David's signature relationship diagnostic tool, The Meikle Matrix, that essentially helps you pinpoint the heart of the problem with any relationship - how this diagnostic tool can help you in practical ways in your agency. I highly recommend you reading this book for me. You can visit David's website at https://www.tuningup.co.uk for more information about the book and also to road test a prototype of The Meikle Matrix for yourself. If you're listening to this at the end of 2023 and you want to build a more entrepreneurial mindset in your account management role or your team, I'm enrolling right now for my twelve month training and mentoring program called the Account Accelerator. I created the Account Accelerator because agency owners were telling me they knew their existing client accounts could grow further but they needed their account managers to do three key things: 1. Act as trusted advisors rather than order takers, so they understood their clients business objectives and felt confident to have conversations about how the agency could help. 2. Spot upsell and cross sell opportunities and follow them effectively so they could increase retention and generate new business opportunities with existing clients. 3. Ask insightful questions to uncover client challenges and feel confident presenting new ideas and asking for referrals and testimonials so they could help a strong sales pipeline of new leads and capture proof of happy clients. I've had 30 years experience in account management and, having trained account growth since 2016, I know not all account managers have the skills, the experience or the mindset to deliver at this level, and many agencies don't have the right internal processes in place to support their account managers with account growth. But, I believe with the right strategies, systems, processes and the support, your account managers can become more entrepreneurially minded, which could have a big impact on your agency's bottom line. So if all of this sounds interesting, then please visit my website https://www.accountmanagementskills.com, where you can book a call, have a chat with me and see if this might be a good fit for you or a member of your team.
It's that time of year, so what better to talk about than a three-story release form Crystal Lake Publishing? “Dark Tide 9: An Unholy Triquetera,” features new works by William Meikle, Curtis M. Lawson, and Jason Parent. Jason joins us to talk about his story, “A Knot Within a Knot,” in which the survivor of a plane crash finds himself going from bad to worse. Meanwhile, an elderly woman faces off against a god of night and his steed from the confines of her airplane seat, while another hides from night and storm in the hope of a new dawn. When a woman becomes pregnant, there is an extensive list of questions that follow: what can I eat, what movement can I do, what kind of delivery do I want, with who, where, will I breastfeed or use formula… The list is longer than the pregnancy. This is where a doula comes into the picture of pregnancy and post-partum. You don't even have to be pregnant to enlist a doula's support. A doula's job is to help make your entire birth experience, and your partner's experience, the best it can be. There is so much miscommunication about the role of a doula. To clear it up and answer common pregnancy and birthing questions is Ambrosia Meikle. Ambrosia Meikle is a birth and postpartum doula in southern California. She is a childbirth educator, lactation educator, and student midwife. Ambrosia was a surrogate and has two children of her own ages 9 and 15. As a doula, her main focus is to ensure birthing people have options and safe birthing environments. Ambrosia is passionate about serving her community and actively participates in bringing awareness to women's health issues. You'll learn all the tips for a healthy delivery, tips on bonding, lactation advice and more: 3:30 what is a doula 4:30 the difference a great doula makes is options 5:40 how Ambrosia became a doula 7:15 optimal time to start working with a doula 8:15 where to find doula 8:50 3 top tips for birth preparation 11:15 importance of feeling comfortable to make noise during childbirth 12:15 nutrition advice during pregnancy which includes ice cream 13:10 differences between a hospital birth and home birth 15:00 what kind of support is needed for at home birth 17:44 why an epidural is not always bad 20:20 what you need to know about the different hospital delivery options 21:36 Should you bathe a baby right after birth 22:00 what should you do with the placenta 27:00 tips to bond with a newborn 28:55 why skin to skin contact with newborns is important 31:00 benefits of spending the first 40 days with the baby at your side 34:30 general lactation tips 35:30 biggest lactation fail is mom's body positioning 37:30 how to identify if a baby has a tongue or lip tie 41:00 why a colic baby is too broad 44:00 postpartum mental health tips 45:00 importance of the mother asking for specific help 46:50 tips to ask for help when visitors see the baby Learn more about Ambrosia https://www.ambrosiabirthservices.com/ Connect on Social Media IG @ambrosiabirthservices Facebook @AmbrosiaBirthServices Connect with Christine on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/christinebullock/ Connect with Christine on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ChristineBullockFitness Follow Christine on Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/chrissybullock/_created/ Text Christine questions at 1-310-361-8697 Sponsored by Kayo Body Care Kayo Body Care was the first to create Face Grade Body Care® products. I had David Meikle on today, which was really wonderful. I've had David on my podcast in the past, but today we are talking about something that is just so interesting and different from the previous episode. You see when you're an artist, sometimes you get these opportunities that come out of nowhere. In this case, David had a unique opportunity to work with one of the best directors of all time - Wes Anderson. They worked closely together to come up with the poster for the movie, as well as some of the art featured in the film itself. David and I talk about the process of how an artist like himself contributes to a film like "Asteroid City" and how it came about. Sometimes you get to do very creative work alongside other very creative people. Wes Anderson is clearly one of those people. He's done some of my personal favorite movies and he has a following like no other, let's just put it that way. Anyhow, we recorded this episode back in December 2022 and were just recently given the greenlight to release it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. In 2009, Judy Meikle was on the list for a heart transplant. She would get that heart that July, a heart that just days after her 70th birthday is still beating strong in her chest today. It should come as no surprise because, for Judy, she has the heart of an Army Ranger. Judy joins us for a special Memorial Day episode. When she hears the national anthem today, and places her hand on her heart, maybe it means a little more because that Army Ranger lives on in her. This is PICK UP THE SIX Podcast.
