Andrew McLuhan—author, speaker, and steward of The McLuhan Institute—shares rich, mind-bending perspectives on the current state of culture, media, connection, and commerce. Drawing from a generations-deep intellectual legacy forged by media theorist and philosopher Marshall McLuhan, Andrew explores what it means to live in a world electrified by complete digital immersion.A New Medium Is A New CultureKey takeaways:“I quickly discovered that it's easy to overwhelm people with too much information. It's almost the worst thing you can do, because you lose them, and it can be hard to get them back.” – Andrew McLuhan“It's much easier to teach people one thing at a time than it is to teach them ten things at once.” – Andrew McLuhan“‘A poem can't mean something that it doesn't mean to you.' Which is kind of deep, but it's not the cop out that you think it is.” – Andrew McLuhan, quoting T.S. Eliot“Marshall McLuhan saw that through human history we've been influenced and steered by the structure and nature of our innovations more than by what we've done with them. A new medium is a new culture.” – Andrew McLuhan“We don't like finding out how we're being used.” – Andrew McLuhan“Commerce is a form of media. It is manipulating people in some way and people are being shaped by it.” – PhillipIn-Show Mentions:How People Are Really Using Gen AI in 2025 – Harvard Business ReviewOther Harvard Business Review pieces:Personalization Done RightThe Consumer Psychology of Adopting AIEric McLuhan's Taking Up McLuhan's Cause – re-releasedThe McLuhan InstituteAssociated Links:Check out Future Commerce on YouTubeCheck out Future Commerce+ for exclusive content and to save on merch and printSubscribe to Insiders and The Senses to read more about what we are witnessing in the commerce worldListen to our other episodes of Future CommerceHave any questions or comments about the show? Bronwyn Williams & Andrew McLuhan | The Small Print In this episode, Bronwyn speaks with Andrew McLuhan, the grandson of the noted media theorist Marshall McLuhan. They discuss the enduring relevance of Marshall's ideas, particularly 'the medium is the message,' in today's digital age. The conversation also explores how the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the impact of technology on society, the effects it had on the younger generation specifically, how technological changes shape our values, and the steps we can take to safeguard what is important to us. Bronwyn Williams is a futurist, economist, trend analyst and host of The Small Print. Her day job as a partner at Flux Trends involves helping business leaders to use foresight to design the future they want to live and work in. You may have seen her talking about Transhumanism or Tikok on Carte Blanche, or heard her talking about trends on 702 or CNBC Africa where she is a regular expert commentator. When she's not talking to brands and businesses about the future, you will probably find her curled up somewhere with a (preferably paperback) book. She tweets at @bronwynwilliams. This episode of 'The New Abnormal' podcast features 'poet for hire' Andrew McLuhan, who also just happens to be the grandson of media-theorist Marshall McLuhan and son of Dr Eric McLuhan. He writes, teaches, coaches and consults about culture and technology from a McLuhan perspective. We therefore discuss his work regarding his exploration, documenting and inventorying the library of Marshall McLuhan (which UNESCO named as part of its 'Memory of the World' registry) and why he views the relationship between his grandfather and father as akin to that of Plato and Aristotle. Along the way, James Joyce and the French symbolists get a mention, as does Trump.  (You don't often see those in the same sentence.)  Naturally, we talk about all things pattern-recognition, identity and global-village related, during this 'dynamic refresher' on the thinking of Marshall McLuhan. Which gives me the perfect opportunity to repeat that epic statement "in a culture like ours, long accustomed to splitting and dividing all things as a means of control, it is sometimes a bit of a shock to be reminded that, in operational and practical fact, the medium in the message".

As a part of its international book tour, Theory Underground joined Andrew McLuhan at The McLuhan Institute for an afternoon of theorizing media, exploring the McLuhan library, and talking about the work they are doing with the Critical Media Theory research cohort at Theory Underground!About the TU Tour Crew:David McKerracher (M.A. in critical theory and B.A. in philosophy) is the sole founder and organizer of Theory Underground, an independent philosophy lecture course platform, publishing house, and social media APP. He is the author of Waypoint and TIMENERGY: Why You Have No Time or Energy, and one of the co-editors of Underground Theory. Born in the city but raised on a homestead in the woods, McKerracher has always been an outsider looking in, trying to understand himself and the world. Loves cats, coffee, and timenergy!Ann Snelgrove-McKerracher received a BS in Social Science (emphasis in sociology and political philosophy) from Boise State University in 2021 where she was part of a research cohort that studied the neoliberalization of higher education. At Theory Underground, she has helped develop and teach two courses: The Idea of the University and Digital Literacy and CMT (Critical Media Theory). When not doing theory or social science related research and writing, Ann can be found traveling the world with Dave, learning Spanish, cooking and baking, or participating in local theater.Bryce Nance - A random skateboarder we picked up along the way. Just kidding! Nance is one of the most involved students at Theory Underground, a huge supporter, and our number 1 roadie. He likes to skateboard, listen to books, and study philosophy. He is a malcontent who believes study as a way of life helps him become less sucky.About the Publications:TIMENERGY*: Why You Have No Time or Energy: We normally don't have any time, but when we finally do, we lack energy. On those rare occasions when we have energy outside of work, it is restless and difficult to harness towards meaningful goals. Starting from the realization that meaningful time is worthless without energy, the concept of “timenergy” points to something we all lack: large energy-infused blocks of repeatable time throughout the week. TIMENERGY: Why You Have No Time or Energy is a critique of our job-centric society and the schooling system that assumes we are nothing more than workers, professionals, or managers. This book challenges all political representatives, professors, and media figures to think deeper about the daily lives and needs of working people.Underground Theory: A collection of timely and cutting edge essays by working class nobodies who are just trying to think, plus some big-named renegade academics who see the value in McKerracher's timenergy theory, Mikey (of The Dangerous Maybe blog)'s working class education work, or the general idea of radical grass roots experiments that have institutional support. THEORY UNDERGROUND IS A critical media theory and alternative adult education experiment founded, organized, and run by David McKerracher. So what is TU? Welcome to a special installment of the Convivial Society featuring my conversation with Andrew McLuhan. I can’t recall how or when I first encountered the work of Marshall McLuhan, I think it might’ve been through the writing of one of his most notable students, Neil Postman. I do know, however, that McLuhan, and others like Postman and Walter Ong who built on his work, became a cornerstone of my own thinking about media and technology. So it was a great pleasure to speak with his grandson Andrew, who is now stewarding and expanding the work of his grandfather and his father, Eric McLuhan, through the McLuhan Institute, of which he is the founder and director. I learned a lot about McLuhan through this conversation and I think you’ll find it worth your time. A variety of resources and sites were mentioned throughout the conversation, and I’ve tried to provide links to all of those below. Growing up an hour's drive from Toronto in a small town, he developed an early interest in reading, computers, Star Trek, and karaoke. He began visiting the local library regularly to use the internet, eventually getting dial-up in his home around the year 2000. Some of his favourite websites to browse as a teenager were Fark.com, an American news aggregator, and Slashdot.org, a community revolving around the computer industry. The immersion in the daily discussions of politically and geographically diverse posters from Fark.com informs his understanding of American culture. And Slashdot.org developed his strong interest in Free computer culture leading him to erase Windows and begin using different versions of the GNU/Linux operating system on his desktop computer. His Computer Science studies at Carleton University in Ottawa were interrupted, and he acquired work first as a computer repair technician, and then full time selling magazines. Having witnessed the rise of the smartphone and social media industry, he now feels there is a need for voices who can provide informed perspectives on modern digital society and their effects on culture. By using old ideas to contextualize the present, such as cyberspace and the ideas of Marshall McLuhan, he hopes to offer some historical perspective which could make phenomena like "Twitter mobs" and contemporary polarized politics more easily understood. The panel's title refers to a book which had at the time recently been published, somewhat of a reaction to Eric McLuhan's book 'Media and Formal Cause' [Eric and Marshall McLuhan, NeoPoiesis Press, 2011]. Eric's book itself was a reaction to a discussion among people on the MEA mailing list which, according to Eric, forced him to delve deep into the subject to put the matter at rest - at least for and to his own satisfaction. A few years later, presumably for their own satisfaction, several members of the MEA, (including Anton, Logan, and Strate, editors of the books and members of this panel heard at the end) published 'Taking up McLuhan's Cause: Perspectives on Media and Formal Causality', to which Eric McLuhan wrote an introduction. It is a bit of a full-circle moment, as Eric was annoyed into researching and writing M/FC by the MEA, then wrote an intro to their published response, then closed the panel resulting from the book at the MEA meeting in 2017 - setting the record (as he saw it) straight while giving insight into the history of Formal Cause (as we know it), it's use to Marshall McLuhan and himself, and more.
