In his third appearance on The Human Voice, media theorist and science fiction author Paul Levinson shares a fascinating conversation about the timeless relevance of media ecology, technology's role in human progress, and the myths surrounding information overload. Paul reflects on his seminal 1996 article On Behalf of Humanity and its argument that the issue isn't too much information but a lack of organizational tools.   Drawing connections between historical innovations and today's AI landscape, Paul explores the concept of “remedial media”—new technologies that solve problems created by previous ones—and how it applies to challenges like algorithmic bias and deep fakes. From his collaborations with media icons Neil Postman and Marshall McLuhan to his optimistic vision for technology as a force for good, Paul offers insights that resonate across decades.   The episode wraps up with Paul's thoughts on techno-pessimism, the power of storytelling, and a fun recommendation for mystery fans: A Perfect Couple. He also highlights his recent alternate history book, Real Life: An Alternate History of The Beatles, imagining a world where John Lennon was never assassinated.   Key Topics Covered: • Information overload vs. information organization • Remedial media as a framework for technological progress • AI, digital watermarks, and the future of human-machine collaboration • Why techno-pessimism often gains more attention • Recommendations for media and books   Tune in for a thought-provoking discussion that spans history, technology, and the enduring human connection to media.

Micro Camp is an opportunity to meet and learn from users of the Micro.blog service, which enables open and accessible blogging and podcasting. This is a podcast version of the video presentation! Some Further Explanation In the presentation, I asserted the importance of paying attention to sound, whether in creative projects, while using digital technology or when moving physically through any given environment. To show the difference in experience that you can have when focusing on sound—with visual elements being secondary—I exported and transformed the audio from that video into this podcast episode. Micro.blog is the host of the Feld Notes podcast, so it made sense to publish it here! While listening, here are some things for you to consider: If you already watched the video, does this audio-only version enhance or detract from the message? If you haven't seen the video, do you feel like you're missing something here, in what was made originally to be visual? Which digital affordances does podcasting offer that aren't present in video, written blogs and other visual formats? How can you tailor your messaging and presentation style to fit audio? Stay tuned for a link to the video presentation on YouTube and in the meantime, you can learn more about Micro Camp and find my other work at martinfeld.info. Welcome to a special installment of the Convivial Society featuring my conversation with Andrew McLuhan. I can’t recall how or when I first encountered the work of Marshall McLuhan, I think it might’ve been through the writing of one of his most notable students, Neil Postman. I do know, however, that McLuhan, and others like Postman and Walter Ong who built on his work, became a cornerstone of my own thinking about media and technology. So it was a great pleasure to speak with his grandson Andrew, who is now stewarding and expanding the work of his grandfather and his father, Eric McLuhan, through the McLuhan Institute, of which he is the founder and director. I learned a lot about McLuhan through this conversation and I think you’ll find it worth your time. A variety of resources and sites were mentioned throughout the conversation, and I’ve tried to provide links to all of those below. Above all, make sure you check out the McLuhan Institute and consider supporting Andrew’s work through his Patreon page. Some people get a view that others don't. Divorce lawyers are one of them. James J. Sexton is one of them and he shares with us his inside views and secrets. If you don't want divorce for breakfast you've got to start expressing yourself and how you feel. If you want things to be a certain way, she did something that triggered you or really appreciate something he did, Hit Send Now. Tell your partner as soon as possible. And since this can be really hard, James has a great suggestion, send it in an email. Don't overthink it, just do it. In a similar vein, it's extremely important to be authentic. (I mean, you knew that already!) But does that mean everyone has to know everything about me? I have to start venting on Insta stories. NO. In this episode, we go deep into this topic and discuss what it really means to be authentic and how to go about it. James J. Sexton is a divorce lawyer with offices in Manhattan and Rockland County. He is the author of the #1 bestselling books, If You’re In My Office, It’s Already Too Late: A Divorce Lawyer’s Guide to Staying Together (Henry Holt, 2018) and How To Stay In Love (MacMillian Press, 2020) He is a sought after public speaker and has frequently appeared on NBC Sunday Morning, Access Hollywood, The Rachel Ray Show, Nightline, Watch What Happens Live, Good Morning America and other national and local programs. His recurring “How To Stay Married” segment on the Steve Harvey daytime talk show enjoyed a national audience for thirteen episodes over two seasons. Sexton’s perspectives on love, divorce, and technology have been featured in a diverse spectrum of national publications including The New York Times, The New York Post, The Guardian UK, Time Magazine, Elle, Glamour, Business Insider, and others. He is a frequent radio and podcast guest, has lectured at continuing legal education conferences across New York State, and has served as an Adjunct Professor at New York University, Ramapo College, and other undergraduate institutions. General Summary: An interview with Brian Ott covers the interaction between Donald Trump's rhetoric and the format of the social media platform Twitter as discussed in his book, The Twitter Presidency. A few undergraduate students conduct the interview and provide commentary in response to Professor Ott's insight on Trump's use of rhetorical devices, the effect of twitter's format on its users and how Trump's style has grown on this platform. Detailed Summary: The podcast begins with Megan Price inquiring about Brian Ott's scholarly career and his book that was recently published (0:00-4:45) Then, they go on to talk about the actual tweets of Donald Trump, and Rachel goes onto ask Brian Ott about the popularity of Trump's tweets (4:45-8:01). Megan then asks about doubling the character allowance on Twitter and its effect on Trump's tweets, and Ott explains his thoughts on the subject (8:01-11:22). Ott states that impulsivity is central to our national ethos, and questions why (11:22-15:44). He goes on to speak to the use of communication technology, and the filtering of our political discourse through these technologies (printing press, television, twitter) (15:44-18:47). Megan asks about the differences between Trump's speech and his tweets throughout the presidential campaign, and Ott talks about how simple (4th grade level) Trump's speech is and how well that translates to tweets. (18:47-21:48). Rachel then asks about how Twitter plays a role in the upcoming election, and Ott explains the difference between Trump voters and Trump followers and how they view his tweets in regards to the upcoming election. (21:48-23:47). The last segment of the podcast is a discussion about if/how Trump's tweets have changed between his candidacy and presidency, and Ott discusses how Trump himself changes the presidential norms in our country. This podcast serves as an introduction to the field of media ecology, particularly to those who are interested in applying some of the contributions from its main scholars to the field of education. I attempt to weave some of the main scholars’ key concepts from the field of media ecology into a web directly pertaining to educational technology and shed light onto how these ideas might translate into a media ecology pedagogy for an audience new to these concepts. This podcast is about three big questions: What is Media Ecology? Why is it important to study media? What useful approaches might students and teachers take to better understand media?

Media Ecology with Dennis Castello.  In the 24th century, is the holodeck the primary mode of media creation and consumption? And if so, what effect does the holographic medium have on Federation society as a whole? In this episode, Meta Treks editor and producer Dennis Castello joins hosts Zachary Fruhling and Mike Morrison behind the microphone to discuss the sociological sub-discipline of media ecology.  Media ecology holds that the different types of media a society consumes influence the behavior of society as a whole.
