Few musicians today stay as busy as Aaron Bibelhauser. Not only is he a prolific songwriter and one half of the twin brother-led bluegrass band called The Bibelhauser Brothers, but he hosts a notable bluegrass music radio show, collaborates with several other artists on albums and singles and leads a community jam session periodically in his home city of Louisville. The only mystery about Aaron is when does he sleep? Aaron and his twin Adam, who splits vocals with his brother, plays bass, contributes to the writing and production of songs, and naturally offers beautiful blood harmony to the group, joined Roots Music Rambler this week to talk about the group's new singles, a potential new album, collaborations and more. We discussed their journey to be musicians, and their history with a previous band called Relic as well. While Adam has a day job and is a full-time dad, Aaron is busy writing, performing and producing. He's penned songs for Del McCoury, Michael Cleveland, and the Louisville Shakespeare Festival, and produced a tribute album for Mickey Clark. He's also the host of Bluegrass Evolution, a Sunday night bluegrass radio program on WFPK (91.9 FM) in Louisville. Also on the show, Frank and Falls discuss Grammy snubs and take a listen to Stephen Wilson Jr.'s astonishing new cover of Ben E. King's standard “Stand By Me,” which lit up the Live at the Print Shop video concert series recently. Don't forget you can now show your support of the show with Roots Music Rambler's new merch, now available at rootsmusicrambler.com/store. Authentic t-shirts, hats and stickers are now available. The Bibelhauser Brothers combine twin brother duet harmony vocals with high energy bluegrass-country-soul sounds. On the heels of their latest release “Close Harmony”, Adam and Aaron create an experience fueled by instrumental prowess, original songs, and obscure country classics. In addition to writing songs recorded by award winning bluegrass artists including Del McCoury, Balsam Range, Michael Cleveland, & Dale Ann Bradley, Aaron Bibelhauser is an accomplished session musician on half a dozen instruments, producer and recording engineer for other regional artists, and long time host of the weekly radio broadcast “Bluegrass Evolution” on 91.9 WFPK in Kentucky. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tophillrecording/support

On today's show is Missy Raines, one of the great bluegrass bassists out there, not to mention a fabulous singer and songwriter. Bluegrass bass playing is a funny thing - on the surface it seems simple. But there's a whole other level to it, and when you hear someone like Junior Huskey do it, or Mike Bub, or Dennis Crouch, or Missy Raines, they all play at that level. There's a way the really good players place their notes, there's the tone, and it all comes down to the bed that the bass players lay for the other players in the band to live in. And that's the hard part. Once you get a chance to play with someone of that calibre it becomes much clearer what great bassist brings to the table, and Missy is one of the best. She's been releasing albums under her own name since 1998, and her latest recording just came out a couple months ago - it's called “Highlander” and it's a killer record that features her band Allegheny as well as guests like Kathy Mattea, Michael Cleveland, Darol Anger, and Rob Ickes. Missy is from West Virginia, and she was lucky enough to grow up in an area that had a strong bluegrass scene that she got to experience first hand. She's lived in Nashville for a long time now, and is on the road alot these days. She's won multiple IBMA awards for Bass Player of the Year, and has performed with legends like Mac Wiseman, Peter Rowan and Josh Graves. Aside from her accomplishments in the bluegrass world, Missy swerved over into more experimental territory a few years back and had a band going called The New Hip, who made a couple of incredible records well worth checking out as well that feature her songwriting in a less traditional context. But these days she's pretty focussed on traditional bluegrass and has one of the best bands on the scene, so make sure you go see them if they come through your area. It is natural that a second generation bluegrass banjo player would have soaked up as much of Earl Scruggs' style on the five string as possible when starting out; it is just as natural that they would push outside of those boundaries of the territory staked out by their pioneering forebears. In Tony Trischka's case, part of this instinct to turn bluegrass on its head early on in his career involved doing things like adding saxophone to an instrumental version of “Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms”, which began with a cacophonous drum solo. Now, we find the habitual trailblazer discovering and reinterpreting never before heard jams from none other than Earl Scruggs himself. It is a bit of a full circle moment, although that is not to say that Tony Trischka ever left the traditional bluegrass fold, either. He is and always was a banjo renaissance man, respected by fans of the roots music avant-garde and the three finger roll alike. In the past couple of years in his now nearly sixty year career, Tony Trischka has been excitedly traveling down an even deeper Earl Scruggs rabbit hole than even he could ever have imagined. Already at work on another book of re-transcriptions of Earl Scruggs' music, which had previously been transcribed by guitar players, a friend named Bob Piekel sent Tony over 200 home recordings of Earl made by John Hartford, which included other greats like Tony Rice, Mac Wiseman and Del McCoury playing for fun over many years in the 1980s and 1990s. These tapes revealed a side of Earl's playing, both in style and repertoire, that no one outside of those small circles of musicians ever heard, including multiple versions of songs like "Gentle on My Mind" and "Here Comes the Bride"; Earl playing blues licks on “Cripple Creek”; syncopations that he used only in those private settings. Brimming with inspiration, Tony Trischka crafted an album based on the John Hartford tapes, bringing in players like Sam Bush, Molly Tuttle, Michael Cleveland, Billy Strings and Mark Schatz, to record his new collection titled Earl Jam: A Tribute To Earl Scruggs. Tony Trischka plays banjo alongside Darol Anger on fiddle Just after Earl Scruggs' 100th birth anniversary, and just ahead of his own 75th trip around the sun, I sat with Tony Trischka at the Earl Scruggs Center following his performance at the Remembering Earl concert, which included the Travelin' McCourys and Jerry Douglas. This episode contains the bulk of that conversation, which was also partially excerpted in our earlier episode titled “An Update, and Two Quick Takes With Tony Trischka and Travis Book”, which includes a portion of Tony's interview that does not appear here. Songs heard in this episode:“John Henry Medley: John Henry/Bonaparte's Retreat/Twists and Turns” by Tony Trischka, from Territory“Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms” by Tony Trischka, from Heartlands, excerpt“Quite Early Morning” by Pete Seeger, from Pete Seeger: The Smithsonian Folkways Collection, excerpt“Dooley” by Tony Trischka, featuring Molly Tuttle and Sam Bush”, from Earl Jam: A Tribute To Earl Scruggs Thank you so much for visiting! We are grateful that you took time to listen, and hope you can help us by spreading awareness of what we are doing. It is as easy as telling a friend and following this podcast on your platform of choice. From there it takes just a moment to give us a top rating and a review. It makes a great difference because the more top reviews and ratings we get, the more visible we become to everyone on those platforms, which means that more people just like you find musical kinship with artists like Tony Trishcka, and legends like Earl Scruggs and Pete Seeger. I would love to hear your comments about that sort of thing and all things Southern Songs and Stories -- you can drop me a line at southernsongsandstories@gmail.com, and I will be glad to reply. Speaking of Earl Scruggs, check out our episode titled The Humble Genius of Earl Scruggs, which is chock full of interviews with bluegrass artists sharing their memories of Earl and how he impacted their lives. This series is a part of the lineup of both public radio WNCW and Osiris Media, with all of the Osiris shows available here. You can also hear new episodes on Bluegrass Planet Radio here. Thanks to Mary Beth Martin and Zach Dressel at the Earl Scruggs Center in Shelby, North Carolina for all their help in setting up my interview with Tony Trischka, and to Corrie Askew for producing the radio adaptations of this series on public radio WNCW, where we worked with Joshua Meng, who wrote and performed our theme songs. Tessa Lark — The Stradgrass Sessions (First Hand Records) Jump to giveaway form New Classical Tracks - Tessa Lark by “Smell is supposedly one of the strongest sensory responses to bring memories back. But for me, the sound of bluegrass may as well be the smell of bluegrass because it launches me back to a pure time and place every time I listen to it,” violinist Tessa Lark said about recording her latest album, The Stradgrass Sessions. In this recording, she blends the sounds of bluegrass with classical music elements. She does that with the help of some of her idols, Michael Cleveland and Edgar Meyer. What the heck is stradgrass? “I was using the old Stradivari violin for four years, which is the violin that Joseph Gingold owned and used until the end of his life. Now the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis owns it. It lets one of the prizewinners use it in the four years between competitions. That was me from 2014 through 2018. “My fiancee, Michael Thurber, when we first met and played together, played bass and accompanied me on a bluegrass number with my father, who plays banjo. In the middle of rehearsal, he said, ‘bluegrass on a Stradivarius is stradgrass.'” What did Michael Cleveland think when he played on the Stradivarius? “I just ran into him at a conference in New York, and he was there doing a showcase. I told him I was his biggest fan and had a Stradivarius with me. I asked, ‘Would you like to try it out?' He said, ‘Of course.' He said it growled. He got into the tone, playing many double stops and long notes. It sounded excellent in his hands. “The tune we played together is ‘Lazy Katie,' and I was in nearby Louisville after we met at that convention in New York City. He lives just outside that in Indiana, and he invited me over to his place. We just jammed for a few hours at his house.” What was it like to make music with Edgar Meyer? “Talk about a dream come true. He has influenced the way I live in music in every way. It is a little bit of a shock when I step back for a second and think that this lifetime hero of mine is a colleague.” Watch now To hear the rest of my conversation, click on the extended interview above, or download the extended podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. Known for the speed, intensity, and artistry of his playing, Cleveland is one of the great fiddler players of his generation, recognized 12 times as the International Bluegrass Music Association's (INBA)“Fiddler of the Year” and inducted into the National Fiddler's Hall of Fame. Cleveland was a child he came to the attention of musicians like Doc Watson, Bill Monroe, and Allison Krause (who brought him to the Grand Ole Opry to play with her band when he was 13). In this podcast, Michael talks about going to the Kentucky School for the Blind when he was four years old – a school with a rich music program that frowned on bluegrass. He learned classical violin during the week and bluegrass when he came home on weekends. We discuss Southern Indiana's rich history in bluegrass, how the music itself is rooted in community where jams are the real places of learning the music, and the accessibility of bluegrass performers to their audiences. Michael recalls starting his professional career which began by playing with Dale Ann Bradley and Rhonda Vincent, his branching out to solo work, and beginning his own band, Flamekeeper (named Instrumental Group of the Year by INBA seven times.) We also discuss his many collaborations with musicians like Bela Fleck, Tommy Emmanuel, and Heritage Fellows Del McCoury, Andy Statman and Jerry Douglas as well as his Grammy Award for Tall Fiddler. We'd love to know your thoughts--email us at artworkspod@arts.gov.

My guest today is Randy LeRoy a musician, engineer, A&R, and mastering engineer in Nashville TN and Takoma Park Maryland. A graduate of the recording program at Middle Tennessee State University (also my alma mater) he got his first gig cutting publishing demos on Nashville's “Music Row” in CBS Song's basement studio, editing radio spots on ¼” tape for a company called Starliners and hanging out in small studios around town. Eventually, he was offered a job with CBS Records as an A&R coordinator and spent time in high-end facilities like Emerald, Stargem, The Dog House, Masterfonics, Sound Shop, Treasure Isle, Studio 19, and even legendary studios like The Record Plant in LA while working for CBS. Randy worked with a variety of the label's many noteworthy artists such as Ray Benson, George Jones, Ricky Van Shelton, Tammy Wynette, Vern Gosdin, and Exile. In 1988 Glenn Meadows at Masterfonics offered him a job as his mastering assistant where Randy learned how to cut reference lacquers, assemble and quality checking masters, and help out engineers during mixing, while mastering small projects on his own. At Masterfonics he would work alongside notable country music producers like Jimmy Bowen, Tony Brown, James Stroud, Jerry Crutchfield, and Barry Beckett. And in 1991 Randy left Masterfonics to start his own mastering studio, Final Stage Mastering located in Sound Stage Studios on Music Row in Nashville where he worked on more Grammy nominated and winning projects throughout the 1990s and 2000s such as Relient K's Two Lefts Don't Make A Right… but Three Do, Allison Brown's Fair Weather, Nappy Root's Humdinger, and Jamey Johnson's That Lonesome Song, to name a few. In June of 2010, Randy left Nashville to become the Senior Mastering Engineer at Tonal Park in Takoma Park, MD where he has mastered some of the biggest names in country, bluegrass, folk, Americana, and gospel such as Jim Lauderdale, Bryan Sutton, Jamey Johnson, Dale Ann Bradley, Colin Hay, Kelsey Waldon, Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, Gold City, and John Cowan. including the 2020 Grammy Winning, Michael Cleveland's “Tall Fiddler” and two other Grammy nominated albums in the Best Bluegrass Album category. Tyler Lance Walker Gill is a country singer/songwriter from Bullitt County, Kentucky. He is a self-described "honky tonk evangelist, spreading the gospel of country music to any barroom that'll have him". TLWG spent much of his formative years at a country music jamboree in Mt. Washington, Kentucky where his mother would often sing. This experience, unknowingly to him, embedded country roots deep in his soul to later resurface in the TLWG sound we hear today. TLWG cut his teeth playing covers before venturing into writing original music and putting together some of the best local talent, including Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Michael Cleveland, Aaron Biebelhauser, Todd Hildreth, John Clay, and members of Nellie Pearl, for his first studio album. TLWG is currently in the studio hammering out new material that will be sure to provide us with more of his signature earworm hooks. Growing bigger deer for hunting has become a challenge for game biologists. Michael Cleveland, the co-owner of Ultimate Antler Deer Feed, has been managing deer for eighteen years alongside co-owner Randy Lively. Looking to take their management to the next level, they talked to several game biologist and deer nutritionists and figured out the key minerals and ingredients to produce amazing rack growth. With this, they developed a revolutionary new product and field tested it on five different farms all with different habitats and geographic locations, observing outstanding results on every single farm. Michael says that if you want to shoot bigger deer, especially during a drought, it is ideal for you to grow one. Through their deer nutrition product, this can be easily achieved.

The world tends to look at accomplishments in the form of accolades and although only in his mid-30’s, Michael Cleveland has plenty to his credit. After picking up the fiddle at age 4, Michael’s musical momentum began to propel him forward towards early success. “When I started taking lessons at age 4,” he remembers, “I told the teacher right up front that I wanted to learn how to play bluegrass and I wanted to play ‘Orange Blossom Special.'” Reluctant as they were, his teachers quickly found a reason to his rhyme, helping him progress to the point when, at age 9, Michael was invited to sit in with the legendary Bill Monroe at the Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival. Soon after, he was hand-picked for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA) Bluegrass Youth Allstars which led to an invitation by Alison Krauss to bring his virtuosic style to the Grand Ole Opry, all before he was 14 years old. His blistering prowess and technical fluency have since marked him as a sought-after musician, leading to performances with Vince Gill, Marty Stuart, Tim O’Brien, J.D. Crowe and the New South, Andy Statman, and The Kruger Brothers in recent years. However, it wasn’t until 2006, when Michael formed his own band Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, that he found the right vehicle for his musical vision, and he hasn’t rested since constantly looking for new ways to push himself and his music forward. “He plays fearless and it’s intoxicating to play with him because he makes you play fearless,” says Country Music Hall of Famer Vince Gill. “He takes no prisoners but he plays with a restraint and a soul. He plays without abandon.” Clearly, the IBMA agrees as he’s their most awarded Fiddle Player of the Year with 10 wins, has won Instrumental Recorded Performance of the Year six times, and fronts their 5-Time Instrumental Group of the Year. Together with Flamekeeper members Josh Richards (guitar), Nathan Livers (mandolin), Jasiah Shrode (banjo) and Tyler Griffith (bass), Cleveland makes his way around the country performing festivals, clubs, and performing arts centers, delighting audiences, leaving them with jaws dropped in complete amazement.“It’s wicked to see how much music he pulls out of a bow,” continues Vince. “He’s untouchable.” Michael Cleveland was inducted into the National Fiddler Hall of Fame in 2018.
Michael Cleveland was born blind but he fell in love with the violin as a young child when he heard a recording of the fiddle tune Orange Blossom Special. “I want to play that,” he told himself and, with the help of his parents and teachers at a school for the blind, that’s exactly what he did, and a whole bunch of other tunes as well. Named fiddler of the year six times in a row by the International Bluegrass Music Association, Michael performs with his group Flamekeeper. I interviewed Michael while attending the Hiawatha Traditional Music Festival in Marquette, Michigan, in 2018.
In honour of the release of the documentary Flamekeeper: The Michael Cleveland Story, we feature Michael Cleveland and his fine fiddle playing that accompanies vocals of four different lead singers, all showing his skill and taste. We recommend the documentary highly! We also have lots of new music and birthdays to celebrate. Enjoy!
Episode 85 offers two remarkable stories from the always-dynamic world of bluegrass music. Michael Cleveland is the record-setting, 11-time winner of the IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year award. He's a traditionally grounded player who's reaching into new terrain as a 38-year-old phenomenon. He's also been blind since birth and he's overcome a lot, a story told in the new documentary Flamekeeper. Rounding out the hour, the married duo bandleaders Eric and Doni of Nefesh Mountain, a New York-based band that boldly and brilliantly fuses bluegrass and Jewish music. They sing in Hebrew and English. The melodies are beguiling and ancient-feeling. The musicianship is excellent. They talk about their four-year adventure together as the first band of their kind.
I'm very excited to have the talented, brilliant, funny, and (as you'll see) engaging Tessa Lark to the show to talk to us about joy in practice and music-making! In this episode, we discuss her views about tackling work with the right mindset, the ways she sparks joy in her practice, and how getting in that joyful headspace not only makes it more gratifying for her, but also helps increase her productivity! I've been thinking a lot about Joy, self-compassion, and using positive self-talk in practicing and performing for the past few years and I ended up researching that topic in the context of my doctoral studies: the idea that high quality work can flow more easily when we are in the right mindset, the right disposition. High-level results stem out of high-level thinking and solutions to problems come more easily when we're in a positive and open state of mind. It is absolutely possible to have rigor without rigidity in the practice room! I had a wonderful time talking with Tessa about this topic that's really close to my heart! I feel like it's a way to approach practicing that can be very impactful and I hope this episode affects your next practice session in a positive way! We elaborate on: Her childhood in the foothills of Kentucky, starting with the Suzuki Method and enjoying attending Marc O'Connor's fiddle camps How she was introduced to fiddle music and blue grass and how it stays with her to this day Her experience with the The Cincinnati Starling Project in Cincinnati, studying with Kurt Sassmannshaus How she met and went on to study with Miriam Fried in Boston, and how Ms Fried helped her develop artistic integrity How the Naumburg Competition helped launch her career Practicing in ways that spark joy – searching for “things in your practice that bring you joy, as opposed to looking for all the things you're doing “horribly” wrong” The “talent” misunderstanding The misconception that “hard work” should feel “hard” Why we need to aim for “focused” and “efficient” work and, YES, that can feel good! Getting into the “joyful headspace” How struggle can be part of the process but its' not “necessary” How emotional depth can also be reached from a positive headspace and mindset Increased productivity How while joy is not a neutral feeling, the process to get there can be neutral The importance of knowing yourself and knowing what can get you to this joyful headspace The importance of setting goals, a positive mindset, reduce distractions, and find a physical space that feels inspiring and is conducive to efficient work How the language we use with ourselves is so important How mental discipline is important and can help us negotiate the variables that can affect performance How she uses a timer in her practice to improve her productivity More about Tessa: Website: https://www.tessalark.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tessalark/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tessa.lark/ YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/HBOfosho YouTube videos featuring Tessa: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=tessa+lark More articles about Tessa: click here The Cincinnati Starling Project: http://www.starling.org/cincinnati-starling-project Kurt Sassmannshaus / Violin Masterclass: http://violinmasterclass.com/en Kenny Werner Effortless Mastery: Liberating the Master Musician: https://kennywerner.com/effortless-mastery Biography Violinist Tessa Lark, recipient of a 2018 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship and a 2016 Avery Fisher Career Grant, Silver Medalist in the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, and winner of the 2012 Naumburg International Violin Competition, is one of the most captivating artistic voices of our time. A budding superstar in the classical realm, she is also a highly acclaimed fiddler in the tradition of her native Kentucky. Since making her concerto debut with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra at sixteen, Ms. Lark has appeared with dozens of orchestras, festivals, and recital venues including Carnegie Hall, Ravinia, San Francisco Performances, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, the Buffalo Philharmonic, and Marlboro Music. Highlights of her 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons included multiple performances of two works for violin and orchestra written for her: Love Letter by bassist-composer Michael Thurber, and Sky, a bluegrass-inspired concerto by Michael Torke premiered and recorded with the Albany (NY) Symphony Orchestra. Additional recording projects include a fantasia-themed album including Ms. Lark's own Appalachian Fantasy and works by Telemann, Ravel, Kreisler, and Schubert; Invention, a debut album of the violin-bass duo Tessa Lark & Michael Thurber that comprises music of J.S. Bach along with non-classical original compositions; and a genre-bending disc in collaboration with such artists as multi-instrumentalist/composer Jon Batiste and American fiddling legend Michael Cleveland. Recent and upcoming activities include Australia's Musica Viva festival—a four-concert engagement highlighted by a duo collaboration with bassist/composer Edgar Meyer—and debuts with the Seattle and Indianapolis symphonies. Scheduled for May 2020 is a Lincoln Center recital debut on its prestigious Great Performers Series. Ms. Lark is a graduate of New England Conservatory with an Artist Diploma from The Juilliard School. She plays a ca. 1600 G.P. Maggini violin on loan from an anonymous donor through the Stradivari Society of Chicago. If you enjoyed the show, please leave a review on iTunes! I truly appreciate your support! The Not Too Bad Bluegrass Band performs at the Library of Congress. Speaker Biography: The Not Too Bad Bluegrass Band formed in 1987, playing local venues around Bloomington, Indiana. Original members included Jeff White, who went on to play with superstars like Alison Krauss and Vince Gill; singer-songwriter Bob Lucas; and Lisa Germano, who later played fiddle with John Mellencamp's band. The current members have their own musical history. Brian Lappin played with bluegrass legends Jimmy Martin and Earl Taylor, and the bands The Ragin' Texans and The Crawdads. His tasteful banjo playing reflects the solid influences of Earle Scruggs and J.D. Crowe. Doug Harden has played mandolin since 1969. His early years were spent at the old Bean Blossom Jamboree barn, and in the Brown County Band. Doug has also spent time in the original Kentucky Ramblers and the band Pine Mountain. Greg Norman started at a local jam session and later joined the Off the Line bluegrass band and singer-songwriter Janne Henshaw's band. Kent Todd was trained in classical violin, and was steered toward bluegrass by his father Scott, also a bluegrass musician; he has played with Bill Grant and Dehila Belle, Michael Cleveland and the Blue Hollow Band, Gary Brewer and the Kentucky Ramblers, and currently is also a member of the Troubled Waters Band. The youngest member of the NTBBB, Brady Stogdill, is a member of the original International Bluegrass Music Association's Young Acoustic All Stars; his father Dean was a great banjo player, and he has learned to play almost anything with strings on it.
