Episode 49: Strengthening our Communities through Research, Data, & Sovereignty Indigenous communities across this nation hold deep knowledge on how we heal and how we learn. For many generations, academia and non-indigenous people have told our stories and shared their perspectives on who we are. Today, we have many indigenous scholars who are changing this trend. Increasingly, indigenous people are obtaining the education and degrees necessary to conduct research within our communities while integrating indigenous methodologies, making the work even more meaningful. The Aunties will be talking with Dr. Darren Ranco (Penobscot) and Dr. Suzanne Greenlaw (Maliseet), who are both indigenous researchers conducting innovative work in Wabanaki communities!  Wabanaki Words Used: Apc-oc (again in the future, parting, good-bye, farewell) - https://pmportal.org/dictionary/apc-oc   Topics Discussed:   Darren Ranco - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darren_Ranco Suzanne Greenlaw - https://schoodicinstitute.org/team/suzanne-greenlaw/ Schoodic Institute - https://schoodicinstitute.org/ University of Maine - https://umaine.edu/ SUNY ESF - https://www.esf.edu/ Robin Wall Kimmerer - https://www.robinwallkimmerer.com/ “Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer - https://bookshop.org/p/books/braiding-sweetgrass-indigenous-wisdom-scientific-knowledge-and-the-teachings-of-plants-robin-wall-kimmerer/6fa4d296293d20e8?ean=9781571313560&next=t “Gathering Moss” by Robin Wall Kimmerer - https://bookshop.org/p/books/gathering-moss-a-natural-and-cultural-history-of-mosses-robin-wall-kimmerer/dcc7a63d6e4517d0?aid=86677&ean=9780870714993&listref=robin-wall-kimmerer&next=t “The Serviceberry” by Robin Wall Kimmerer - https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-serviceberry-abundance-and-reciprocity-in-the-natural-world-robin-wall-kimmerer/11103aae5b752d02?aid=86677&ean=9781668072240&listref=robin-wall-kimmerer&next=t Emerald Ash Borer - https://www.emeraldashborer.info/ WaYS - https://www.wabanakiyouthinscience.org/ “The First Blade of Sweetgrass” by Suzanne Greenlaw and Gabriel Frey - https://a.co/d/0h8RcPDd Darren Ranco TEDx Dirigo  Talk- https://www.ted.com/talks/darren_ranco_addressing_wicked_problems_with_wabanaki_diplomacy   Wabanaki Tribal Nations: Houlton Band of Maliseet Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians | Littleton, ME (maliseets.net) Mi'kmaq Mi'kmaq Nation | Presque Isle, ME (micmac-nsn.gov) Passamaquoddy Tribe Indian Township Passamaquoddy Tribe @ Indian Township | Peskotomuhkati Motahkomikuk Passamaquoddy Tribe Sipayik Sipayik Tribal Government – Sipayik (wabanaki.com) Penobscot Nation Penobscot Nation | Departments & Info | Indian Island, Maine   Special Thanks/Woliwon:  Producer: Gavin Allen Podcast Team: Macy Downs

HEADLINE: The Rise of Private Space Telescopes GUEST: Bob Zimmerman A startup called Blue Sky Space is launching nano-satellite telescopes into orbit to provide research data to universities. Using SpaceX rockets, the company deploys modest telescopes—some with mirrors as small as five inches—that allow institutions to purchase observation time for teaching and spectroscopy. Today, I am speaking with Angana Jacob, Head of the Research Data group within the Enterprise Data business at Bloomberg. We talk about Angana's career path through quantitative research and data platforms, and how the industry has evolved from a world dominated by bespoke models and backtests to one where many models have become increasingly commoditized. A central theme of our conversation is the idea that while models are easier than ever to replicate, data — how it's sourced, cleaned, standardized, linked, and delivered — has become the true competitive moat.We discuss what it means to “do data correctly,” how Bloomberg decides which datasets to build or sunset, how modern quants think about their data pipelines and tech stacks, and why aligning research data with production and back-office systems matters more than most people realize. Throughout the episode, we focus on Bloomberg's goal of shortening a client's time to alpha, and what that looks like in practice. At its core, this episode is about a simple but powerful idea: when everyone has access to similar models, durable edge increasingly comes from the data beneath them. Please enjoy my episode with Angana Jacob.

If you've been to a national park in the U.S. recently, you might have noticed some odd new signs about “beauty” and “grandeur.” Or, some signs you were used to seeing might now be missing completely. An executive order issued earlier this year put the history and educational aspects of the parks system under threat–but a group of librarians stepped in to save it.  This week we have a conversation between Sam and two of the leaders of the independent volunteer archiving project Save Our Signs, an effort to archive national park signs and monument placards. It's a community collaboration project co-founded by a group of librarians, public historians, and data experts in partnership with the Data Rescue Project and Safeguarding Research & Culture.  Lynda Kellam leads the Research Data and Digital Scholarship team at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries and is a founding organizer of the Data Rescue Project. Jenny McBurney is the Government Publications Librarian and Regional Depository Coordinator at the University of Minnesota Libraries. In this episode, they discuss turning “frustration, dismay and disbelief” at parks history under threat into action: compiling more than 10,000 images from over 300 national parks into a database to be preserved for the people. Law Librarians Take the Lead: The Future of AI and Legal Information

The Geek In Review

In this episode of The Geek in Review, we welcome three powerhouse guests—Cas Laskowski, Taryn Marks, and Kristina (Kris) Niedringhaus—who are charting a bold course for Artificial Intelligence & the Future of Law Libraries. These three recently co-authored a major white paper, Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Law Libraries (pdf), which we see as less of a report and more of a call to arms. Together, we explore how law librarians can move from reactive observers of AI's rise to proactive architects shaping its ethical and practical integration across the legal ecosystem.Cas Laskowski, Head of Research Data and Instruction at the University of Arizona College of Law, shares how the release of ChatGPT in 2022 jolted the profession into action. Librarians everywhere were overwhelmed by the flood of information and hype surrounding AI tools. Cas's response was to create a space for collective thinking and planning: the Future of Law Libraries initiative and a series of roundtables designed to bring professionals together for strategic collaboration. One of the paper's most ambitious recommendations—a centralized AI organization for legal information professionals—aims to unify those efforts, coordinate training, and sustain a profession-wide vision. Cas compares the idea to data curation networks that transformed academic libraries by pooling expertise and reducing duplication of effort.Kris Niedringhaus, Associate Dean and Director of the University of South Carolina School of Law Library, takes the conversation into education and training. She makes a compelling case that “AI-ready librarians,” much like “tech-ready lawyers,” need flexible skill-building models that recognize different levels of engagement and expertise. Drawing from the Delta Lawyer model, Kris calls for tiered AI training—ranging from foundational prompt literacy to higher-level data ethics and system design awareness. She also pushes back against the fear surrounding AI in academia, noting that students are often told not to use AI at all. We couldn't agree more with her point that we're doing students a disservice if we don't teach them how to use these tools effectively and responsibly. Law firms now expect graduates to come in with applied AI fluency, and that expectation will only grow. When we turned to Taryn Marks, Associate Director of Research and Instructional Services at Stanford Law School's Robert Crown Law Library, the discussion moved to another key recommendation: building a centralized knowledge hub for AI-related best practices. Taryn describes how librarians are eager to share materials, lesson plans, and policy frameworks, but the current efforts are fragmented. A shared repository would “reduce duplication of effort” and allow ideas to evolve through open collaboration. It's similar to how standardized models like SALI help the legal industry align without giving away anyone's secret sauce. We loved this idea of a commons where librarians, educators, and technologists work together to lift the entire profession. As we explored the broader implications, all three guests agreed that intentionality is key. Cas emphasizes that information architecture—the design of how knowledge is gathered, tagged, and retrieved—is central to AI's success. Kris points to both the promise and peril of automated legal decision-making, warning that “done well, AI can expand access to justice; done poorly, it can amplify bias.” And Taryn envisions a future where legal information professionals are trusted collaborators across the entire lifecycle of data and decision-making.Listen on mobile platforms:  Apple Podcasts |  Spotify | YouTube[Special Thanks to Legal Technology Hub for their sponsoring this episode.] Email: geekinreviewpodcast@gmail.comMusic: Jerry David DeCicca

We live in an age where data seems to be everywhere. As citizens and consumers we leave data traces, as scientists we have more and more data to analyse. At the same time, access to data is becoming more restricted. While authoritarian countries rely on data for surveillance, they are also making it harder for outsiders to access data in and about their countries. Not to mention that data, especially false data can be used as a tool for propaganda. But there is hope: research data infrastructure can help to connect, interpret and contextualise data and even make available local information that contradicts the narratives of authoritarian state propaganda. Kerstin Bischl speaks with Felix Herrmann from Discuss Data and Ivaylo Dinev from the KonKoop Datalab about objectives, chances and challenges that come with researching Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Research Data Validates the Value of Pharmacists Providing Consult Reports to Support Pharmacogenomics Report Interpretation: An Interview with the Research Investigators

Significant challenges to widescale clinical implementation of PGx include a lack of physician experience using PGx test data or confidence in interpreting PGx test data and integrating the data into the medication therapy management process. For PGx to be most impactful, prescribers must consider PGx data within the context of other non-genetic patient-specific factors. Pharmacists may help prescribers with PGx test data by creating a summary of medication therapy management recommendations for the patient that streamlines PGx report flags and identifies other pharmacotherapy interventions the pharmacist recognizes while applying non-genetic patient-specific data to the PGx test data. In this episode of the PGx for Pharmacists podcast, Dr. Becky Winslow discusses the research study, "Pharmacist Consult Reports to Support Pharmacogenomics Report Interpretation," with two of the research investigators, Dr. Anna Langerveld and Dr. David Bright. Dr. Langerveld and Dr. Bright share how this research adds to the growing evidence that clinical pharmacists can help improve the utility of PGx and prescribing. They also share how their study described a process for reducing PGx laboratory report information to a single page of patient-specific clinical recommendations. Lastly, they share that while clinical decision support tools are becoming more routine for pharmacogenomic management, the pharmacists in this study reduced the number of report-based alerts independent of sophisticated clinical decision support informatics. Anna Langerveld, Ph.D., is the Founder and President of Genemarkers, a contract research organization and CLIA/CAP certified testing laboratory specializing in genomics. Anna received her B.A. in Psychology from SUNY Binghamton and her Ph.D. from the Interdisciplinary Program in Neurosciences at Tulane University. After receiving her Ph.D., Anna served as a Research Assistant Professor at Western Michigan University. She founded Genemarkers in 2008. Under her leadership, Michigan Celebrates Small Business recognized the Company as one of the Top 50 Michigan Companies to watch. Anna is an author of peer-reviewed publications, an NIH grant recipient, and an invited speaker at a wide range of national meetings. Anna currently serves as an adjunct professor and an advisory board member for the Manchester University pharmacogenomics program and holds a community faculty position at the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine. Anna has been instrumental in developing strategic community partnerships to implement the use of genomics in clinical care, with a particular focus on mental health and underserved populations. Dr. David Bright is a Professor of Pharmacy at Ferris State University, where he has taught therapeutics and medication therapy management. He received his PharmD degree from the University of Toledo, completed a community pharmacy residency with Kroger Pharmacy and the University of Toledo, and served on the faculty at the Ohio Northern University as a community pharmacy residency program director. His research has primarily involved the pragmatic implementation and improvement of non-dispensing pharmacy services, particularly in the outpatient setting. Most recently, that has involved the integration of pharmacogenomics into clinical practice through community pharmacy and ambulatory care practice models. Research discussed in the podcast episode: Bright D, Saadeh C, DeVuyst-Miller S, Sohn M, Choker A, Langerveld A. Pharmacist Consult Reports to Support Pharmacogenomics Report Interpretation.
