This time Eric welcomes back to the show author and Monthly Review Press editorial director Michael Yates to discuss his new book "Work, Work, Work: Alienation and Class Struggle." Eric and Michael explore the nature of work and how it relates to production, alienation, and the idea of value. The conversation touches on everything from the mythology of the workplace to mainstream bourgeois economics and why it has nothing to say on labor. From there, Eric and Michael discuss how climate change and 21st Century capitalism are changing work for billions of people and what "work is hell" really means. This special episode of What's Your Forte? is a group interview on the many ways to work in the music industry! Our guests today are at different stages of their music careers, and talk about their winding paths towards what they do, a typical day at work and the most exciting (and most challenging) aspects of their work. Meet our panelists: Michael Yates (he/him) is a dedicated educator who has worked for the Halton District School for the past nine years. He designed and implemented an instrumental music program built around high standards, engagement and student excellence. Michael's musical journey began at Mohawk College where he completed a three-year diploma in jazz performance. In 2011, he obtained his Honours Bachelors of Music from McMaster University and completed his B.Ed. at Nipissing University in 2013. Michael is currently teaching Grade 6/7/8 instrumental music at Pilgrim Wood Public School, and is also a steady gigging musician in the GTHA. Shana Bates (she/her) and her husband own KAOS Music Lesson Studios, a community-centric music school located in southeast Oakville. Shana started her working career with IBM but quickly moved into the world of recording studios where she and a previous partner created, developed and ran one of the city's most successful independent recording studios. Shana went on to work in the event production business. Shana now spends her days and nights as a full time mom and business owner. She is a community go-getter and can often be found volunteering at schools and working at various events in the community. Ryan MacKinnon (he/him) is the Camp and Workshop Coordinator with Bandology, an Oakville-based music non-profit, and teaches privately and with the Burlington Teen Tour Band. Ryan started playing guitar at eight years old and switched over to drum kit when he was 10. Upon entering high school he found a new love in playing classical percussion instruments and completed a Bachelor of Music in Self-Directed Performance at Wilfrid Laurier University. He has played with the Guelph Symphony Orchestra, Stratford Symphony Orchestra and Grand Philharmonic Choir. Ryan loves to share all the things that he has learned on his journey to help young musicians excel.

Once upon a time, a student that hated the school system made his mission to change it. Today he is going strong at it, and he is telling us how and his vision for 2030.Inspired by one of his articles, we invited Michael Yates, Co-Founder of Guide, Keynote Speaker & Education Consultant.“What was school like for you? More than anything, I could not stand the vast amounts of time I felt I was wasting by learning things that held no relevance to my adult life. Casey and Miriam discuss this funny, heartbreaking piece presented by Actors Theatre of Louisville.
In today's episode of The Edge of Excellence, we chat with Michael Yates, Senior Director of Innovations and Agricultural Strategy at Walmart. At the age of 15, Michael got his first job as a prep cook and went on to work throughout his high school years. He believes this was crucial in developing the strong work ethic he has today. After high school, he enrolled at the University of Missouri, where he quickly concluded that a career in Journalism wasn't the path for him. To help figure out what he was passionate about, he started a small business under the College Works program. This turned out to be the perfect opportunity to build his confidence as well as develop a broad set of business and soft skills. Over time, he was also promoted to district manager at College Works. Since then, Michael has had an exciting career path in sales and business development, working in different countries. He worked at a chemical company, then moved to a construction company and afterward jumped into the renewable energy industry. As LED technology started being implemented in indoor cultivation, it was a natural transition into the agriculture technology field, and that's how he ended up working at Walmart! Join Matt and Michael in this eye-opening discussion. You don't want to miss this! What You Will Learn in this Show: Michael's unique definition of excellence and what his role as a Senior Director at Walmart is all about. How Michael's diverse career path led him to discover his true passion. How to carve a path in sales and sales leadership regardless of the field you are in. Why being passionate and focusing on the quality of your impact will help you succeed in the long run. Why you have to learn all you can about your industry. How embracing different opportunities and experiences can help you discover what you are really good at. And so much more... Welcome to the radio magazine that brings you news, commentary and analysis from a Black Left perspective. I’m Glen Ford, along with my co-host Nellie Bailey. Coming up: Marxists have been calling on workers of the world to unite for more than a century and a half. But can workers still change the world. A new book says, Yes. And, Supporters of Mumia Abu Jamal urge Philadelphia’s chief prosecutor not to stand in the way of possible pathway to freedom. The Democrats seem certain to step up their investigations of the Trump administration, now that they are a majority In the U.S. House. That also probably means even more frenzied efforts to link Russia to the Trump presidential campaign. Stephen Cohen is the nation’s best known expert on Russia, having studied that nation’s politics in both the Soviet era, and after Russia became capitalist. Cohen spoke with Black Agenda Report executive editor Glen Ford, who remembers the tail end of anti-Russian hysteria during the McCarty Era. But Ford cannot recall anything during the McCarthy era that was as manic, loud and relentless has today’s hysteria against Russia. Professor Cohen, agrees. Russia may be capitalist, but socialists around the world still seek the overthrow of the rule of the rich. Michael Yates is an editor with the prestigious left publication, Monthly Review. He’s a longtime labor education and a prolific author. Yates’ latest book is entitled, “Can the Working Class Change the World?” Yates think they can, and must. But, most Americans don’t think of themselves as being in the working class, and very few know that 200 million Indian workers recently staged a two-day, general strike. Supporters of Mumia Abu Jamal, the nation’s best known political prisoner, rallied in Philadelphia, last week, demanding that the city’s district attorney, Larry Krasner, do nothing to interfere with Abu Jamal’s chance to appeal his conviction in the death of a policeman, 38 years ago. A long list of people took to the microhone, beginning with a high school classmate of Abu Jamal, when Mumia was known as Wesley Cook.
We've heard the expression 'Hunt the Wind' over and over. Many of us base our entire hunt on exactly that concept. But what if that was all wrong? Did your head just explode? Mine did when I heard this from Michael Yates, part of the group of hunters that Bill Vale has organized as the Pressured Deer Pros. I had to dig deeper so we put Michael on the mic stand to discuss amongst other things: hunter efficiency, ground disturbance, hunting upwind and not down wind, several ground hunting tactics and ambush set ups. Have you ever seen a one-man show in the theater? It's awesome. Unless it's terrible. The same can be said for one-person digital analytics teams. It can be awesome, in that you get to, literally, do EVERY aspect of analytics. It can be terrible because, well, you've got to do EVERYTHING, and it's easy for the fun stuff to get squeezed out of the day. On this episode, we head back Down Under for a chat with Moe Kiss, product (and digital) analyst at THE ICONIC. Whether you pronounce "data" as DAY-tuh or DAH-tuh, Moe's perspective will almost certainly motivate you find new ways to push yourself and your organization forward. People, places, things, sites, and doodads mentioned in this episode were many, and they include: R, Tableau, Snowplow, adjust, Datalicious, Moe's post on Analysis of Competing Hypotheses, Moe's post on getting started in digital analytics, Jeffalytics.com, RSiteCatalyst, The Millenial Whoop, Kabaddi, Michael Yates, ABC (the Australian Broadcasting Corporation), an Event Tracking Naming Strategy from Chris Le, Simo Ahava, Nico Miceli, and Towards Universal Event Analytics - Building an Event Grammar by Snowplow co-founder Alex Dean.
