This week I was honored to share a podcast w/ Aaron Dana & Eric Kienle. Aaron & Eric both battled at this years Mid State Mile & were the last two athletes standing. If you listen with intent, you'll see that this conversation is far beyond "running". In this episode, I have Eric Kienle back on after one year, this time as the champion of the last man standing at the Mid-State Mile. During this interview, we drilled deep into what Eric truly learned in the past four years from the Mid-State Mile and how it has not only made him a better ultra-runner but more importantly a better person. If you would like to learn more about Eric and his journey as a runner, go back to Episode #27 in my podcast. Below is an excerpt that Eric wrote from his experience after winning the Mid-State Mile. "I ran. I ran until my muscles burned and my veins pumped battery acid. Then I ran some more.”The Mid-State Mile 2023. I walked away the last person standing, and a new Course Record with 121 loops, 133.1 miles, 41,120ft of gain/loss, for a total time of 41 hours and 20 minutes. This was my 4th year at MidState, and 3rd year of really understanding what it takes to be “out there” for a long time. This race is truly magical. The amount of growth and self-improvement that comes out of its participants is unmatched. I have grown so much over the years with this race from completely clueless, to ego-driven maniac, to being served a piece of humble pie, to being the last runner standing. I approached this race very differently this year, and I tried to simplify it as much as possible. 'How far can I possibly go when there's an aid station every mile?' That was what I played in my head over and over in training. I also learned to be a listener and not a talker. Actions speak louder than words. I chose not to post about goals, or talk about what I planned to do at MidState. I will work harder than anyone else out there, and results will happen organically. MidState is a game of patience and preventative maintenance. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I cooled before I was hot. I took salt before there were cramps. I drank before I needed it. Rinse and repeat. I stayed present and repeated things in my head to keep me present. I'd say 'Who am I in this pain? Who am I at my level of existence of my soul, and energy in the universe? I am not my physical appearance, and my body is not mine. The body is merely a vehicle. The vehicle feels pain, but the soul does not. The soul is driving this vehicle.' I stayed present this entire race. I listened to my coaches and crew. All I had to do is go, and I did. I am so grateful for this race. Thank you to everyone who helped me on this journey." Solo adventure this week recapping my experience running the Mid State Mile Last Man Standing Ultra Marathon in Nashville, TN. Why do I choose to run ultras? What was the training plan? What is it like living your life 20 mins at a time? Why do have to suffer? Does ultra prepare you for life? & How the ultra mindset correlates to hunting the mountains.
Jeff drags the camper down to Franklin Tennessee and we get a chance to hang out at the Mid-State Mile, a brutal last person standing race. We chat with RDs John Cox and Becca Jones, runners on the course and my son Koen, who with a long run of 8 miles 5 years ago decided to enter at the last minute.
In this episode, I highlight my experience at Mid-State Mile in Franklin, TN this past Father's Day weekend. It was an incredible environment of individuals coming together to serve one mission, to help each other go as far as they can go with others' support. I distance they could not come close to on their own. Mid-State Mile event is a 1.1 mile figure eight that has 340ft of elevation gain and loss. It's simple, you have 20 min to complete the loop. If you do, you're still in it. It goes until there is only one left running the last loop on their own. This creates such a beautiful combination of competition and love for our fellow man/woman that you just want to see them push beyond their own mental and physical limits. I share what I saw over the course of the weekend and how we can/should apply this to our lives in facing storms that come our way. The Mid-State Mile is a last man standing endurance event held in Tennessee. This yearly right of passage is more than just a race, it's a fellowship event. Our guest today is John Grdina, and he just ran in his first Mid-State Mile, and he joins us to talk about the experience and the lessons learned. We also have a great conversation about faith and the freedom that comes with holding ourselves to a higher standard through accountability from others around us. This is PICK UP THE SIX Podcast. -- More about John here: https://www.johngrdina.com
This year John Parker and Jeff Forrester went up to Tennessee to compete at the Mid-State Mile. Both men took it on with John running 22 some miles and Jeff Forrester coming home with 5 miles. John Parker was one of the three winners at the Forgotten Florida 100! He's also raced numerous Last Man Standing races, including Florida's at Death at Depuis. Jeff Forrester is new to the trails, but he knocked it out at the HellCat 50k! Both these have some amazing stories at this years Mid-state Mile and its always a lot to take in, even though a race doesn't quite pan out as planned. Enjoy! This course at the Mid-State is no joke. The Mid-State Mile course is housed on private land just 20 minutes from Downtown Franklin, TN. It's a one-mile course and hosts 340 feet of elevation gain per loop. That elevation is thanks to two climbs with fast runnable sections between them, plus an easy downhill section through the field to the start/finish area. The course itself is an old logging road with a lot of local history. It's a Last Man Standing race that restarts every 20 minutes, so runners will have to complete the loop and be back in the starting corral ready to start the next loop until the last man standing.
Two military veterans, one an ex-homicide detective and recovering alcoholic, one jack of all trades but master of none, and a couple of hippies kinda winging it on a disordered journey to health and happiness. That is how this week's guests have described themselves to their social media following. There is one additional definition on Justin's Instagram page that puts this all into perspective and paints a picture of how the people who know Justin and Stefanie best view their purpose and passion…it says, “Hope Dealer!” This past weekend, Justin won the 2022 Mid State Mile last man standing ultra-marathon, and Stefanie was there the whole weekend to crew and support him. With Stefanie's help, Justin was able to break the course record by running 128 miles in 40 hours, with over 39,000 feet of elevation gain and loss! I was fortunate to see much of Justin's run in person. It may have been the most remarkable accomplishment I have ever witnessed. Justin and Stefanie not only give each other hope, but also to everyone they seek to inspire. This episode is about their story together, and the future they have been building for themselves. It is enough to give anyone the hope they need. Show highlights: · Growing up a rebel · Justin's time in the Army, where he and Stefanie met · Going through the Police Academy and getting sober · Transitioning to an ultra-runner · It's all about progress · The mindset of running 100 miles on a treadmill · Holding your spouse to a standard · The difference between real and fake pain Justin and Stefanie on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ultra_dad_/ https://www.instagram.com/hippie_trail_wife/ Follow Mike Bellini on IG: https://www.instagram.com/realmikebellini/ Ultra Marriage Resources... This year, for a third time, Eric Kienle took on the Mid-State Mile in Tennessee. He absolutely crushed it running 127.6 miles with 39,440 feet of elevation gain/loss. Eric is a former Florida resident who recently moved out to Montana, he's won races like the Itch, the SWAMP 50k, the first-ever Skunk Ape Night Run, and the Wild Florida 120. The Mid-State Mile course is housed on private land just 20 minutes from Downtown Franklin, TN. It's a one-mile course and hosts 340 feet of elevation gain per loop. Our good friend and Law Enforcement Officer Tyler Geiger joins us once again on The HHAUSA Podcast. A passionate archer and ultra runner, he rallied his followers last year to raise money for us by completing the David Goggins inspired 4x4x48 Challenge, running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours.A few things have changed since we last spoke to Tyler. Having moved from the outskirts of Nashville in 2021, he and his new bride are living in the great state of Montana where he's been bitten by the elk hunting bug. When not protecting the streets, you'll find him on a long run or in the mountains prepping for hunting season. On June 18th, Geiger returns to his old stomping grounds to participate in the Mid State Mile, a grueling, last man standing event won the last two years by former Navy Seal Chadd Wright. The name speaks for itself and the rules are simple, the last man or woman standing at the end of the race is the winner. Tyler once again is raising money for HHAUSA and we cannot thank him enough for his heart for our cause. In the little spare time that he has, he and a fellow officer launched The Montana Nocks Podcast to give them an opportunity to share their love of all things archery with their growing audience. You can find it on most podcast platforms, follow it on Instagram at @montananockspodcast and Tyler at @_geig_It takes a special human being to put their life at risk each day to keep us safe here in America. PTSD is as real in the Law Enforcement and First Responder communities as it is with our Veterans, something that Geiger is acutely aware of. It's that awareness and his desire to help others that fuels him to lace up his shoes and make a difference, one mile at a time.Tyler...thank you for your service.

Aaron Dana is an ultra-marathon runner, professional home remodeler, husband of eleven years, and father of three. Aaron's #1 goal of the past year was to deepen his relationship with his wife. Aaron Dana is a regular guy with an uncommon passion to take on the challenges of life head-on. He is a husband, a father of 3 beautiful kids, an ultra runner and a business owner. This was a super fun episode with Aaron. We dive more into who Aaron is a person and not just a Top 3 finisher of the @midstatemile (which was no small feat!) We talk about his life growing up, entering adulthood, marriage, fatherhood, living to a standard, and lessons from his running, including the recent Mid State Mile. I trust you will enjoy this conversation with Aaron Dana as much as I did! Thank you for listening, sharing, leaving a rating and review. Thank you to our partners for their support as well.
