Alright, get ready for an episode that's as wild as a zombie apocalypse (and as inspiring as crossing a state on foot)! This week on the Dirt and Vert Podcast, we're welcoming the awesome duo, Jon Cox and Becca Jones from BMFJ Events and the infamous Mid-State Mile! Becca and Jon takes us on a truly unique running journey – from initial motivation to survive a zombie apocalypse (seriously!) to finding joy in the grit of ultra running. They open up about the mental health aspects of hitting the trails, the critical role of pacing, and her absolutely incredible achievement of running across Tennessee! You heard that right. We also dive into the nitty-gritty of events like the brutal Duncan Ridge Trail and the evolving Mid-State Mile, sharing how weather can throw a wrench in the best-laid plans and how community camaraderie becomes your lifeline when things get tough. This conversation is a powerful reminder that running is a journey of personal growth, resilience, and finding your tribe. If you've ever struggled to find your "why" in running, or just love a story packed with heart and humor, this episode is a must-listen!Chapters00:00 Introduction to the Dirt Bird Podcast00:30 Meet the Guests: Jon Cox and Becca Jones01:00 The Journey into Running: Becca's Story02:28 Finding Joy in Running: A Personal Exploration03:48 Mental Health and Running: A Complex Relationship06:53 The Commitment to Growth in Running09:15 Reflections on Race Experiences and Personal Growth13:32 Proud Moments in Running: Achievements and Challenges20:54 Becca's Athletic Background: From Basketball to Ultra Running25:48 The Transition to Ultra Running: A New Passion32:47 The Importance of Enjoyment in Running33:29 The Journey of Endurance Running36:29 Planning and Execution of a 630-Mile Run41:04 The Challenges of Cruel Jewel46:04 The Mid-State Mile: A Unique Race Concept56:18 Community and Connection in Ultra Running01:08:44 The Power of Community in Racing01:10:09 Building a Supportive Environment01:11:48 Personal Growth Through Challenges01:13:56 Celebrating Every Achievement01:15:12 The Emotional Journey of Racing01:16:58 Improvements and Innovations in Race Experience01:19:22 Reflections on Humility and Growth01:21:13 The Why Behind Running01:24:01 Living Life to the Fullest01:24:52 Future Aspirations and Race Ideas

I recently signed up to run the Tennessee Mile. The race is run over a course affectionately - or maybe intimidatingly - called the "Murder Mile." When you sign yourself up for murder, it's usually wise to get a better idea of what you are up against. So I reached out to Becca Jones and Jon Cox who put this event on as well as the Midstate mile they host on the same course earlier in the year. I discovered what I often discover in the ultra community. I discovered two beautiful people. Jon talks about taking up running several years ago when he was feeling like he hadn't achieved anything notable in life. So he ran a marathon. And his running journey was born. Becca talks about growing up on the trails. She tells us how running helps her and others look into their souls. And how much she loves being a part of that exploration.  I hope you enjoy our conversation.    Check out the Mid-state mile Facebook Page here: https://www.facebook.com/midstatemile/Check out Becca's coaching website here, where you can also register to come run your own murder mile: www.bmfjevents.com

Moped crime has been in the headlines after a spike in the last few years. But police say there's been a large reduction with 44% fewer moped crimes January 2018 to October 2018 than the same 10 months of 2017. There was also a 38% drop in moped thefts in the same period. Police say moped crime can happen at any time of the day or night. Victims are often targeted as they come out of tube stations or at transport hubs. Thieves also snatch handbags, high-value watches, and other items. But police are using a range of tactics across Greater London to tackle offenders, including DNA forensic tagging and the use of automatic tyre deflation devices. Commander Amanda Pearson said: “There is a perception that if you remove your helmet or fail to stop for police when requested to do so we will not take any further course of action. This is untrue. “The public quite rightly expects us to intervene to keep London safe. Our highly trained police drivers weigh up the risks and decide upon the most appropriate tactics in those circumstances. “Offenders on mopeds and motorcycles who attempt to evade the police are making a choice that puts themselves and others at risk. “So our message is clear: we can, we will and we do target those involved in moped and motorcycle crime at every opportunity.” https://taxi-news.co.uk/met-police-announce-crackdown-on-moped-crime/ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With Time Running Out, Chris Johnson Asks For Your Support To Hold TaxiApps To Account. Three taxis and part of the workshop were damaged, but there were no reports of injury. The firefighters managed to prevent the flames spreading to other garage workshops along Cudworth Street, housed under the Liverpool Street main line. “We had to work quickly,” Brigade watch manager Paul Rozan explained. “We used specialist cutting equipment to cut away the door and get to the fire to prevent it spreading to neighbouring businesses.” Crews from Bethnal Green, Whitechapel, Shadwell, and Shoreditch fire stations removed three propane cylinders which had been exposed to heat and put them at a safe distance in time. When we looked out we saw one bus on fire and a fire engine. “Then there were a whole series of explosions. Within 20 minutes it had spread to a massive inferno.” The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said at the height of the blaze, eleven buses were alight and control officers took around 40 calls from the public. Abdelyekini Olafusi of Hoskins Close, Canning Town, hit the 41-year-old woman at the junction of Theobalds Road and Clerkenwell Road in Islington in May last year. When the 57-year-old appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court, the court heard that he was waiting at traffic lights when the lights turned green, he moved off and went to make a right turn. He clipped the cyclist's back wheel, and she fell to the ground – but Olafusi kept driving and went over her. The court heard that he initially thought he had gone over a speed-bump, and that she was lucky she didn't die. The victim suffered a broken leg, a fractured pelvis and a wounded chest. A year later, she is still recovering from her injuries. Olafusi received a 15 month driving ban and was ordered to pay costs totalling £1260 Detective Sergeant Cheryl Frost said his reckless driving is “a stark reminder of the dangers and consequences of using a mobile phone whilst behind the wheel. “The victim suffered horrific injuries, and was incredibly lucky not to have been killed. http://taxi-news.co.uk/canning-town-minicab-driver-thought-cyclist-he-crushed-while-distracted-by-his-mobile-phone-was-a-speed-bump/ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ And our very own Joe Lewis and Jon Cox have released a Christmas Single called Christmas just ain't Christmas without you. Rickshaw riders have been witnessed mounting footpaths, ignoring traffic regulations, riding through crowded areas at what could be considered “breakneck speed,” as well as charging unsuspecting riders exorbitant fees for relatively short journey's. Business leaders have said that “enough is enough,” and are calling for a crackdown. Westminster City Council have been attempting to bring in legislation for in excess of a decade but to no avail as they have been thwarted time after time, for a plethora of reasons. With the proliferation of electric pedicabs, business leaders are now getting behind Paul Scully MPs bill, which if passed, will give Transport for London the power to regulate rickshaw owners and drivers, as well as protecting riders. Under current legislation, pedicabs fall into the category of “stage-carriages” and as such are subject to some aspects of Hackney Carriage legislation. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Television personality, writer and businesswoman Martha Stewart has criticised Uber after being “less than impressed” after ordering her first ride with the minicab giant. It was reported in The Daily Mail that Ms Stewart had ordered the Uber, her first, from Tiffany's in Fifth Avenue, New York, and it went downhill from there. Upon ordering an Uber, 77 year old Ms Stewart found that the first was a “no-show.” Another Uber then arrived 10 minutes later, Ms Stewart then complained that the vehicle was parked so far away that she couldn't see the license plate, and then found that it was facing the wrong direction, facing East when she wanted to go South West. Ms Stewart alleged that the Uber driver then took 20 minutes to get the vehicle travelling in the correct direction. The entrepreneur also alleged that the vehicle that she had to travel in was a mess, both inside and out. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Chris Johnson still needs to raise £4000 through his crowdfunding efforts for his employment claim against My Taxi. Where were the running boards? Why was there no opening windscreen, so essential for ventilation, demisting or for assisting visibility while driving through the stereotypical London fog? Furthermore, how would the automatic gearbox cope with the rigours of urban motoring? And where was the luggage platform alongside the driver's compartment? The new Austin FX4 together with the Routemaster bus, it was symbolic of post-war change in the capital. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ For all of the drivers that say Demo's dont work, here is Jim Thomas telling us what demos have achieved __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ And our very own Joe Lewis and Jon Cox have released a Christmas Single called Christmas just ain't Christmas without you. The College of Paramedics said the new model of kerbed lanes, which are fiercely supported by cycle safety campaigners, leave drivers nowhere to go when they see blue flashing lights behind them. For some of the most critical emergency patients, such as those suffering cardiac arrest, every minute added to the time it take to reach hospital can significantly reduce the chances of survival. The College on Friday called for town planners to re-think the introduction of fully segregated lanes in order to allow better traffic flow in congested city centres. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The City of London Corporation is introducing an experimental traffic scheme from 1 October 2018 on Aldersgate Street. Read the documents below and send us your comments by 1 April 2019. The City of London is suspending the ban on U-turns for northbound traffic on Aldersgate Street at the junction with Fann Street on an experimental basis. Residents in Fann Street and ward members have informed the City Corporation that vehicles traveling north on Aldersgate Street are using Fann Street to change direction and travel southbound due to the ban on U-turns at the north end of the central reservation in Aldersgate Street. Vehicles are making three types of movement to be able to travel southbound. Smaller vehicles and those with a small turning circle are able to turn within the mouth of Fann Street. Other vehicles, including smaller vehicles, either make a three-point turn in Fann Street or travel further into the street to use the entrance to Bunyan Court car park to turn. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Three unusable water cannon bought by Boris Johnson when he was mayor of London have been sold for scrap, at a net loss of more than £300,000. Johnson bought the crowd-control vehicles from the German police in 2014, in anticipation of social unrest, without checking whether they could be used on London's streets. In one of his most humiliating episodes as mayor, the then home secretary, Theresa May, banned them from use anywhere in England and Wales. It left the capital's taxpayers with three expensive white elephants. The current mayor, Sadiq Khan, pledged to claw back as much money as possible on the redundant vehicles by selling them. But after almost two years the mayor's office admitted defeat in its attempt to find a reputable buyer. It announced on Monday that it had agreed to sell the vehicles for just £11,025 to Reclamations Ollerton, a scrap metal yard in Newark, Nottinghamshire. The fee recoups 3.4% of the £322,834.71 spent on the vehicles since 2014. The 25-year-old vehicles cost £85,022 in 2014, but they were found to be riddled with faults and required expensive modification to make them roadworthy. This included £32,000 to comply with the city's low emission zone, and almost £1,000 on new stereos. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Chris Johnson still needs to raise £4000 through his crowdfunding efforts for his employment claim against My Taxi. I am requesting your assistance in sending out messages to drivers and also in trying to gather information/intelligence. Can you please encourage drivers to report all suspected crimes or crime related incidents to police. I have been told that there may be information/intelligence on social media which has not been passed to the police and would request that any information/intelligence that is on your social media sites is passed to police with details of who has supplied it. This will help us build up a picture of what is happening, where and when it is taking place and those that are involved. It could also be the vital bit of evidence that might help solve a crime. We have been carrying out overt and covert patrols in the area and are also working with the local SaferNeighbourhoods Team to provide crime prevention advice to drivers. Again I would request your assistance in raising awareness so that drivers understand the key risks such as carrying money in the cab, leaving mobile phones or other property on show and leaving the cab. Some crime prevention measures that can be taken include refusing a job if you feel unsafe, keep doors and lockable screens shut, try not to leave the cab, if you feel something is not right drive away and contact police to report crimes or crime related incidents. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ And our very own Joe Lewis and Jon Cox have released a Christmas Single called Christmas just ain't Christmas without you. Hire Mire, 51 years old from Harrow, received two years’ imprisonment to run concurrently. He was also placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years and received a Sexual Harm Prevention Order which prevents him being in the same vehicle as other females he doesn't know. The driver can also not apply or act to be a licensed Private Hire driver or Taxi driver with any authority within England and Wales. Mire was found guilty on Friday 9 November 2018, at Wood Green Crown Court of three offences of sexual assault by touching. The first offence took place on 22 September 2017 in the Buckinghamshire area. Over the following two days he committed a further two offences in Surrey and Hackney. Following a separate trial he was convicted on 9 April 2018 at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court of two offences of section 4a Public Order. These two offences involved speaking to lone female passengers in a sexual manner, making them feel intimidated and vulnerable. The first of these incidents took place on 22 May 2017 in Camden; the second on 22 September 2017 in the Buckinghamshire area. Police were informed by Transport for London in October 2017 that Mire had been responsible for the assault on 24 September in Hackney. The female had made a complaint to the private hire company who in turn informed TfL. An investigation was launched by officers from the Met’s Taxi and Private Hire Policing Team. In each of the incidents Mire targeted lone females. He would either sexually touch them or make sexual remarks of a graphic nature. In one case, after trying to grab the victim’s hand and speaking to her in a suggestive manner he made 21 attempts to contact her via her mobile phone after she gave into his demands that she hand over her phone number. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Florida Uber driver allegedly solicited sex, or “a sexual favor,” from a passenger that requested a ride to work via the ride-sharing app. The passenger reportedly canceled the request after receiving the indecent proposal from the driver but made sure to report the incident to Uber. Matthew Marston of Orlando, Florida, reportedly hailed an Uber around 3 a.m. earlier this week. His driver allegedly then messaged him before pick-up with the offer of riding for free if he performed a sexual favor. “Hey, I’ll give you a free ride if you let me [redacted],” the driver allegedly told Marston, according to NBC 2 WESH. “I was shocked. It felt uncomfortable,” Marston told the channel. “Of course I canceled the Uber. But I was uncomfortable calling another Uber. You know, I was thinking about calling out of work.” Marston followed by hailing a second ride but was still issued a $5 cancellation fee for his first ride. “It was a five dollar fee for canceling it,” Marston added. “That’s why I’ve been trying to get in contact with them [Uber].” ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ LONDON (Reuters) – Uber Technologies has hired an ex-adviser to former British prime minister David Cameron to lead the ride-hailing firm’s lobbying efforts in northern Europe, less than a month after the company won a reprieve to operate in London. The U.S. company has appointed Adam Atashzai as its head of policy for northern Europe, which includes the UK and countries in the Nordics and Benelux, an Uber spokesman told Reuters. His role will include engaging with governments as well as academics and charities, the spokesman said. Atashzai declined to comment. The appointment comes after Uber recently moved to improve strained relations in the British capital as it faced the threat of a ban in its most important European market. ADVERTISEMENT Atashzai is currently a partner at Finsbury, a public relations firm owned by WPP, and was previously deputy political director to Cameron. He left politics following Cameron’s resignation in the wake of the June 2016 EU referendum and joined Finsbury later that year. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Taxi App have promised every driver £13.60 per month subs if they manage to attract 500 new drivers by the end of November. Jon Cox dives into obscure Utah history to talk about a 1957 riot at the Utah State Prison with hostages that included the Granger 2nd Ward basketball team and a drama club preparing a production called Felon Follies. The friends also discuss the best and worst national parks in Utah and around the country.

Today’s podcast marks the beginning of what I hope might become a regular feature on the podcast. The session was recorded live on the campus of Bryant University at the end of weekend conference with the title Genocide in World History, sponsored by the New England region of the World History Association. I’m hoping that occasional reports from conferences will help shed light on new research and new directions in the field. They will of necessity be a bit rawer than ordinary interviews. But I think the benefits far outweigh occasional blemishes. The conference at Bryant stressed the need to see genocide through the lens of the discipline of world history. Individual panels tended to focus on specific cases. But several papers took an explicitly comparative perspective. And the capstone session looked carefully at what it might mean to study genocide from the perspective of a world historian. The podcast features four participants from the conference: Jonathan Bush, Jon Cox, Tommy O’Connell and Michael Bryant. I hope you find their contributions interesting.
