On January 28, 2022, John O'Keefe and his girlfriend, Karen Read, were hanging out with friends at a local bar. When the bar closed, the group of friends went to Brian and Nicole Albert's house for an after party. Karen dropped John off at the party and went home, however when John did not come home, Karen went looking for him. Karen would find John's body in the snow in front of the Albert's home, and people who were at the party the night before said that John never came into the house. It appeared that Karen may have hit John with her vehicle as she left the residence, however Karen's defense believes that it was actually an elaborate police cover up and John was murdered by someone at the party.   Sources:  Eric Levenson, “What we know about the Karen Read murder trial and the death of her police officer boyfriend”, CNN, June 27, 2024, https://edition.cnn.com/2024/06/27/us/karen-read-john-okeefe-what-we-know/, accessed July 1, 2024.     Emanuella Grinberg, “Key players in the Karen Read murder case”, Court TV, May 10, 2024, https://www.courttv.com/news/key-players-in-the-karen-read-murder-case/, accessed July 2, 2024.      Frank O'Laughlin, “‘You have really hurt me': See all the messages Karen Read and John O'Keefe exchanged before he died”, Boston 25 News, June 20 2024, https://www.boston25news.com/news/local/you-have-really-hurt-me-see-all-messages-karen-read-john-okeefe-exchanged-before-he-died/535J4MAO65GC3JB45FB4L2JCIQ/, Accessed July 8, 2024.     “Boston officer John O'Keefe was called a ‘patron saint' by the girlfriend accused of killing him”, AP News, June 28, 2024, https://apnews.com/article/karen-read-boston-murder-trial-8dfa34c4be6aeabe649373ea006e9f10#, accessed July 10, 2024.     Tara Kerrigan, ”Remembering the Real Victim in the Karen Read Case, My Friend John O'Keefe”, Boston Magazine, April 12, 2024, https://www.bostonmagazine.com/news/2024/04/12/john-okeefe-karen-read-case/, accessed July 10, 2024.     Matt Schooley, “Karen Read's attorneys seek to dismiss 2 charges, reveal how jury may have voted in trial”, CBS News, July 8, 2024, https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/karen-read-murder-trial-result-alan-jackson/, accessed July 10, 2024.     Mike Toole, Victoria D, Kristina Rex, “Karen Read murder trial testimony focuses on "how long to die in cold" search, SUV driving in reverse”, CBS News, June 14, 2024, https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/karen-read-trial-live-stream-today-day-25/, accessed July 10, 2024.     Matt Schooley, “A timeline of the Karen Read case and the story behind the high-profile Massachusetts murder trial”, CBS News, July 10, 2024, https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/karen-read-trial-timeline-john-okeefe/, accessed July 10, 2024.     Matt Schooley, “Karen Read murder trial witness Colin Albert questioned about bloody knuckles, threatening videos”, CBS News, May 16, 2024, https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/karen-read-live-stream-today-murder-trial-day-13/, accessed July 10, 2024.     Matt Schooley, “Karen Read murder trial jury hears 911 calls on Day 5 of testimony from first responders”, CBS News, May 6, 2024, https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/karen-read-live-stream-today-murder-trial-day-5/, accessed July 11, 2024.     Neal Riley, Kristina Rex, “"Flirty" texts between Karen Read, Brian Higgins revealed in murder trial testimony”, CBS News, May 24, 2024, https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/karen-read-trial-live-stream-today-brian-higgins/, accessed July 11, 2024.     Matt Schooley, “Karen Read murder trial testimony focuses on bar drinking video, broken SUV taillight”, CBS News, June 5, 2024, https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/karen-read-murder-trial-live-stream-today-day-20/, accessed July 11, 2024.     Matt Schooley, “Karen Read murder trial highlights Trooper Michael Proctor's "regrettable" text messages”, CBS News, June 10, 2024, https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/karen-read-murder-trial-live-stream-today-day-22/, accessed July 11, 2024.      Matt Schooley, Kristina Rex, “Karen Read's defense team rests their case in her murder trial”, CBS News, June 25, 2024, https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/karen-read-murder-trial-live-stream-today-day-29/, accessed July 11, 2024.

The success of Star Wars drove children's entertainment to do a lot of dumb things in the late 70s and early 80s, but throwing the characters and basic concept of HOMER'S Odyssey into space in the 31st century was definitely not one of them. While Ulysses 31 is cherished almost entirely by a small segment of GenXers who managed to catch it on TV during its very short run in the 1980s, this co-production between DiC and TMS packs a surprising psychedelic punch, and was a staple of French language Radio-Canada programming. Mike Toole and Dez join me to share their memories of this underrated classic.

While many tend to associate franchises like Dragon Ball and Gundam with their historical ties to Canadian dubbing, the works of the godfather of anime, Osamu Tezuka, have a surprising hidden history within that designation as well. From the first anime ever aired on television in France, to the OTHER 80s Astro Boy dub, to a Kimba the White Lion dub produced under extremely unscrupulous circumstances, to more recent productions funded by the Japan Foundation, we've seen a number of work produced by Canadian studios. Mike Toole joins me to chronicle these largely obscure dubs in a way that will hopefully make you angry the next time a Tezuka property is sent to a dubbing studio in Miami instead of Vancouver.

You either want your employees to have a work/life balance, or you want them to be obsessed with security 24/7. You can't have both. This episode is hosted by me, David Spark (@dspark), producer of CISO Series and Mike Johnson. Our guest this week is Arpita Biswas, (@0sn1s) senior incident response engineer, Databricks Thanks to our podcast sponsor, StackRox StackRox is the industry’s first Kubernetes-native security platform that enables organizations to securely build, deploy, and run cloud-native applications anywhere. The StackRox Kubernetes Security Platform delivers lower operational cost, reduced operational risk, and greater developer productivity through a Kubernetes-native approach that supports built-in security across the entire software development lifecycle. What would you advise? People speak a lot about the importance of integrating security and DevOps. Now it's time to learn some specifics, like how to energize developers to be more security minded in their development. What works? What hasn't worked? "What's Worse?!" You just learned something was breached. Uggh. (Thanks to Mike Toole, Censys) What’s the best way to handle this ? What questions should be asked to see if a security team is cloud incident ready? A good article over on F5 by Sara Boddy, Raymond Pompon, and Sander Vinberg, provides some suggestions such as "Can you describe our attack surface and how have you reduced it to the bare minimum?" and "How are we managing access control?" and "What do we do when systems or security controls fail?" Which of the questions is the most revealing to cloud security readiness and why? Should you ignore this security advice? On the AskNetSec subreddit someone inquired about a good hiring question. One redditor suggested asking "What do you do on your own home network with respect to security?" to which another redditor argued that the question was unfair. He left the security and networking for work. He had other hobbies and interests for home life. Another person said, yes it is unfair, but there are plenty of candidates who do breathe security 24/7 and if given a choice, the redditor would take that person. The politically correct thing to say is you want the person with the work-life balance, but wouldn't we be more impressed with the person who has security in their blood day and night? Close your eyes and visualize the perfect engagement Another question on AskNetSec subreddit asked "What are the most important skills you see missing among other coworkers or your team?" The two most common answers I saw on the thread were communications and critical thinking. Are these correct. or should something else go there? ? And if those two did improve, what would be the resulting effect to a company's security program?

However, that doesn't mean you should skip Sherlock Hound! Known simply as "Sherlock Holmes" in French, this Italian-Japanese co-production was the final television series directed by Hayao Miyazaki, and was likely the first exposure to his work for all those watching on Radio-Canada back in the 1980s. What this series lacks in actual mystery it makes up for in spades with elaborate animated set pieces and unnecessary animation flexes... for the six episodes that Miyazaki directed, anyway! Mike Toole swings by to help determine why anime is more popular in Canada than it is in other regions like the United States. I don't think we find a definitive answer, but along the way we talk about Otakon, the 80s Astro Boy dub that aired on Global, World Masterpiece Theatre on Radio-Canada, and that elusive Dragon Ball Kai Ocean dub.

I flew back East for AnimeNEXT this year, and I figured I’d mark the occasion with a now-rare treat: an actual podcast episode. Our guests include a bunch of super-cool folks you may recognize: Ani-Gamers’ own Ink, Anime News Network writer and prolific con panelist Mike Toole, longtime translator Neil Nadelman, and returning podcast guest Patrick from The Cockpit. Topics include: cool ’80s anime Future Police Urashiman, Studio TRIGGER guests, English-speaking Japanese animator Aya Suzuki, the inherent superiority of East Coast anime con panels, and “ancient” anime conventions from before the year 2010. We tried recording this using two different portable recorders, and I think it came out pretty listenable. Show notes and links after the break. This is the happiest of cartoons~ So since we are gearing up for Anime Weekend Atlanta and we know you kids like those Japanese cartoons, we decided to talk about one! This time we decided to talk about Ringing Bell, an anime from the studio that Sanrio built, helmed by Masami Hata and base doff the book by Takashi Yanase. Also released by Discotek and with excellent commentary track by Mike Toole. We also talk about the normal things we tend to, like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, BUT ALSO pizza. And we cover some crazy allegations about how we are from the southern part of the United States of AMERICA, that SOMEHOW we don’t understand what can make a good pizza. Naturally, we handle this with the grace and aplomb that properly befits southern gentlemen. OSMnotes Buy some Ringing Bell! If you happen to be at AWA, go ahead and track down Discotek’s booth! They might have it, and usually at, or better than the price that Amazon will have. You cannot go wrong! Speaking of something you can never go wrong with, Time Cues: We start the OSMcast!ing – 00:00 General Gabbing – 00:37 The War of Northern Pizza Aggression – 03:43 Final Dragon: A Realm Quest Reborn Fantasy Minute! – 13:57 Moments of OSM Fairy Fencer F – 24:35 Even More Minecraft – 27:15 Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – 32:20 Anime Weekend Atlanta 2014 – 35:58 Moments of F.U. We have FIVE OF THEM. Please come to them! Here they are: Getting Your Anime Groove Back (Thursday, September 25 • 8:00pm, Kennesaw):Anime burn out happens all the time. Sometimes life gets in the way and people lose interest in keeping up with the latest shows and news. This panel looks at a few shows that may rekindle that anime fan deep inside that just wants to be free again. Boys to Men: Shonen and Seinen (Friday, September 26 • 5:00pm, CGC – 105): So what does One Piece, Naruto, Ranma ½, Nichijou, and Blue Exorcist all have in common? Their anime and manga for boys! But what does Ghost in the Shell, Chobits, Mysterious Girlfriend X, and Monster have in common? They’re for men! Wait, what? What does any of this even mean? Don’t worry, it’s fine. Shonen and Seinen are entire worlds of different kinds of anime and manga, and we’re here to show you the way. Manga You Need to Buy Right Now (Saturday, September 27 • 12:30pm, CGC – 113 & 114): Manga, the world of Japanese comics. There’s a whole lot of them, and it seems like today there are even more ways to buy them than ever. Let us be your guide in this new comic landscape. We’ll show you all the ways to buy your manga, physically and digitally. And hey, we’ll even tell you about some of the neater Japanese comics to have come out lately! Spice Girls: Shojo and Josei (Saturday, September 27 • 2:45pm, CGC – 106):Shojo are Japanese comics and cartoons for girls, and Josei are the same but for women. But there’s way more to shojo than romance stories and Sailor Moon for shojo, and even more to josei than even that. We’ll be tackling both terms, what they mean, and all the various incarnations therein we can think of. There’s going to sparkles, and tears, and crocodiles, and justice, and who knows what else? Anime and Manga in the Digital Age (Sunday, September 28 • 3:45pm, CGC – 102):Anime isn’t just discs anymore, and manga isn’t just books! Nowadays, with the advent of smart phones, tablets, Rokus, and other ways of streaming stuff, there are more ways to get your anime and manga fix than ever before! There are, in fact, so many you may have not heard of them all. But we know about most of them, and can tell you where they are and what they’re good for.
