Some people embrace practice and coaching in order to be ready for a certain moment, while others train to be fully present in any moment. When it comes to the most important moments, why not both? Amy and Mike invited educators Claire Russell and Aproteem Choudhury to explore how preparation and mindfulness go together. What are five things you will learn in this episode? How do test prep tutoring and mindfulness coaching overlap?  What are the primary reasons a student would benefit from mindfulness preparation in test prep? How does mindfulness help students achieve in high-stakes events? How can we help students be more receptive to mind-body strategies?  What is one mindfulness tip anyone can implement now? MEET OUR GUESTS Claire Russell is the founder of Russell Tutoring, a boutique, K-college tutoring, test prep, and mindfulness coaching company. Claire has been an educator for 30 years, and she first became interested in mindfulness strategies when she saw students achieve far lower on test day than in their practice work. RTC's Mindfulness Programs have evolved from there, and a third of RTC's tutors are certified mindfulness coaches. RTC invests in mindfulness coaching both because anxiety has become so rampant in our students nationwide, and because Claire has become passionate about self-care as a skill students need for life. Claire is an avid gardener and forever suffers being a fan of the Tottenham Hotspurs. Aproteem Choudhury is a Mindfulness Coach for Russell Tutoring. Apro brings a degree in Neuroscience and extensive clinical and healthcare systems experience to the teaching of  mind-body science at RTC. More importantly, he is the Director of the Greater Houston Healing Collaborative at the Institute for Spirituality and Health. At GHHC, he integrates mind-body medicine to promote community health through innovative public health initiatives that are trauma-informed and community-led. At Russell Tutoring, Apro also applies his wealth of experience to empower students, equipping them with stress management skills and  resilience-building techniques to optimize their test-taking potential.  Claire previously appeared in episode 374 HOW TO BREATHE DURING STRESSFUL ACADEMIC SITUATIONS. Public speaking, steep heights, and high stakes exams share at least one element in common: they really stress some people out! Luckily, response to all kinds of anxiety can be managed through easy, practicable techniques. Amy and Mike invited educators Claire Russell and Erin Brenneman to demonstrate how to breathe during stressful academic situations. What are five things you will learn in this episode? What happens physically when someone feels extreme anxiety?  How can breathing regulate the nervous system?  What is 4-5-3 breathing? (5-7 minutes)  What changes when stressed individuals manage breathing?  What other mind-body strategies have you found useful for students?  MEET OUR GUESTS Claire Russell is the founder of Russell Tutoring, a boutique, K-college tutoring, test prep, and mindfulness coaching company. Claire has been an educator for 30 years, and she first became interested in mindfulness strategies when she saw students achieve far lower on test day than in their practice work. Prior to joining RTC, she spent ten years working as a geoscientist. She has been an educator for over 20 years, and she advocates inquiry-based, hands-on science education. Erin is also a certified yoga teacher and has been teaching mindfulness to K-12 students and adults since 2018. Erin fell in love with teaching test prep at RTC, and her dual knowledge of test design and mind-body practices has made her an expert in helping test anxious students achieve on SAT and ACT. Workers have more rights than maybe they've ever harnessed as a collective, and it's shaping the way leaders lead. We're starting to see the research bear out that when we move away from leading by power, into leading with emotional intelligence, that this is actually a way to build a more successful company, a more successful team, and it's a way to be more successful as a person.Scott Shute is the Head of the Compassion and Mindfulness Programs at LinkedIn, and the author of The Full Body Yes: Change Your Work And Your World From The Inside Out.This episode focuses on mindfulness and compassion, Scott's upbringing in rural Kansas, work as religion, and why haven't we been talking about this stuff all along.Episode Quotes:How do you define compassion:[00:03:39] The first part is having an awareness for the other person. The second part is having a mindset of kindness towards them, or a mindset of wishing the best for them. And then the third part is the courage to take action on their behalf. Now this works for our employees, it also works for our customers. What has changed about labor to bring us to this moment:[00:07:04] We've evolved in consciousness and our labor markets have changed. The two things have fit together. By being a good person, I can actually deliver better results for my company and be personally more fulfilled, but also help other people be personally more fulfilled. So it's a little bit of a golden age in work. The importance of feedback:[00:27:38] One of the beauties of getting older is that we see all the mistakes and we've been through enough cycles to see what went well and what didn't go well. And as a leader, that's super helpful because then we can help guide people that are younger or have less cycles of experience. In terms of getting feedback, when we are more comfortable in our own skin, we're not so worried about what everybody else says. It's interesting because then it allows us to be more vulnerable. And in that vulnerability, it allows us to take on feedback to say, I can really hear what you're saying without getting so triggered.Show Links:Guest Profile:Scott Shute's WebsiteScott Shute on LinkedinScott Shute on TwitterScott Shute on FacebookScott Shute on TEDxMountainViewHis Work:The Full Body Yes: Change Your Work and Your World from the Inside Out

"Anything dealing with meditation or anything dealing with children's emotional growth is difficult to quantify. And it's difficult to put a price on it. So, it's difficult for schools, principals in particular to bring programs when you have to pay some people to do some things inside of a school. So, meditation and things of that nature unfortunately will be put on the backburner. And a lot of people's levels of urgency tend be well, low on that on that scale. Because a lot of people just aren't into it themselves. And unfortunately, can't see a broader picture, outside of what's the immediate gratification." Special Guests: Monique Debi and Vance Benton.

Sometimes we all need a little lift—something to put the bounce back in our step. If you are like many, you may struggle with self-confidence. You may also compare your successes and failures with those of others. If everything is going well in your life, this tactic may temporarily bolster your sense of self-worth. But what happens when things aren’t going so well? Based on the idea that true self-esteem is grounded in internal, rather than external factors, this book offers 50 easy-to-use mindfulness practices that will help you improve inner awareness and live a more fulfilled life without harsh self-judgment. Mindfulness can help you battle feelings of low self-worth by encouraging you to pay attention to your negative thoughts as they occur, accept them, and ultimately control of how you react to them. The exercises in this pocket-sized book are intended to be simple, brief, and powerful. These are practices to settle into each morning, perhaps before your cup of tea or coffee, and which can be sprinkled throughout the day when you are at work, play, or home. To help you keep track of your thoughts, the book also includes journaling exercises that will help you discover what actions may have led to feelings of positivity or negativity. By focusing on your own awareness and thought processes, you will begin to understand what factors cause you to feel bad about yourself, and honestly assess those factors without giving in to feelings of hopelessness. You will discover that true self-esteem has less to do with what the world is telling you, and has everything to do with what you tell yourself.
