Welcome to Episode 86 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring fellow Sports Dietitian and endurance athlete Dana Eshelman (MS RD CSSD), founder of A Dash of Dana Performance Nutrition. Today, Dana and I are chatting about the hormone cortisol (aka "the stress hormone") and how it relates to health and performance in endurance athletes. We were brainstorming topics and landed on this one, as we both frequently see our active clients burning the candle at both ends with training, work, family, and other aspects of their busy lives. They're often under fueling, whether intentionally or unintentionally, dealing with mental and physical stress, and not sleeping enough, and this obviously does not produce good outcomes. If you've ever been curious about cortisol and how it ties into all of the above, tune into this episode. I provide tons of background on how cortisol functions in the body, and then Dana and I dive into how and why things go off track and what you can do about it. In this powerful episode with Lacey Eshelman, we dive deep into the often overlooked and misunderstood realm of self-care for mothers. Meg & Lacey reflect on the importance of having open conversations about this topic, shedding light on the disparity between the public portrayal of maternal self-care and its true, complex nature.Key Points:The Deceptive Facade: Explore the misleading image of self-care as portrayed in the public eye and dissect the unrealistic expectations it sets for mothers.Weaponizing Self-Care: Examine how societal structures and systems have weaponized the concept of self-care, turning it into a consumerist and capitalist tool rather than a genuine investment in oneself.Initiation of Motherhood: Uncover the profound transformation that occurs with the initiation into motherhood, challenging traditional narratives and questioning the ancestral trauma that mothers often carry.Breaking the Cycle: Address the internal struggle to break free from societal conditioning and ancestral trauma, emphasizing the need to prioritize personal well-being over societal expectations. The Myth of Replenishment: Challenge the misconception that a simple act like a bubble bath can magically replenish a mother's energy, highlighting the ongoing work required to achieve true self-sustainability.The Price of Complacency: Expose the danger of complacency in the societal narrative surrounding motherhood, urging mothers to resist the pressure to give without receiving in return.Join us for a raw and authentic conversation that transcends the superficial notions of self-care, delving into the profound journey of motherhood and the reclaiming of one's identity amid societal expectations. Our guest today is Mark Eshelman. Mark accepted Christ at the young age of 10, but his faith soon became works based. In his 20's, he experienced a spiritual crisis and sought answers as he traveled across the world. God provided the resources he needed to get through it, and for many years, Mark lived as a committed follower of Jesus. While his spiritual crisis led him to settle many of his intellectual questions about Jesus and Christianity, his faith was still very much in his head, and he did not know how to engage with God on a heartfelt, emotional level. Eventually he hit a spiritual drought, and he knew he needed something more. Then, a friend introduced him to Victory Over the Darkness and The Bondage Breaker by Neil Anderson. Immediately, he noticed two significant changes: his heart was quiet, and his bitter anger was gone. This was the start of a new chapter in Mark's life. Since then, he's been on a journey of discovering his significance in God and learning to break off idols which has allowed him to fully receive and feel the depths of God's love. Today, he's able to love his wife, God and others in a way that he never was before. Keith Eshelman is the co-founder & CEO of Parks Project. Parks Project, founded in 2014, came from the idea that we can all do more to support America's parklands. In the early days, Keith volunteered at trail days in local national parks—through this, he realized that there was a huge lack of participation from the next generation. Welcome into Episode 52 of the 1544 Miles to Omaha podcast. Today's episode is a podcast unlike any other podcast we have ever done. It features not one, but two guests at the same time. On top of that, those guests are two legends of Titan Baseball, George Horton and Rick Vanderhook.Dave had a chance to sit down in the backyard of George Horton's Yorba Linda home and ask both Horton and Hooky to recall some of the greatest players they played with and coached while with Titan Baseball. We wanted to dive into the players and the people that made the Titans so successful over the years that don't show up in the media guide or the box scores. We wanted to know which Titan had the best slider, the best 2-out hitter, who was the best bullpen catcher, best clubhouse guy, even the best part-time player. Both Hooky and Horton were quick to say that choosing to recognize "the best" change-up or "the best" outfield arm was too difficult and would leave too many deserving Titans off the list. In this episode, we chose to recall those great players and recognize all the Titan alumni that fit into the different categories. Our conversation spans from George Horton's era as a player when Titan Baseball joined the ranks of Division 1 all the way through the Rick Vanderhook years. As players, then assistants and eventually head coaches of the Titan Baseball program, who better to ask than the two guys who played and coached at Fullerton and can span the over 45 years of Titan Baseball.Part 1 highlights include:Great contact hitters (5:33)Great Strike-Zone Discipline (12:32)Great Bunters (16:53)Great 2-out hitters (20:45)Hooky story about Shane Costa (23:39)Great Base runners (25:17)Amazing Overall Athletes (30:24)Electric Fastball (39:10)Great Curve ball (47:05)Exploding Slider (54:09)Horton story about Brian Tokarse vs JD Drew (54:33)Great Change-up (1:01:54)Great Control (1:07:58)Hooky story on Eshelman's 1st Walk (1:08:20)Horton story on Dan Naulty hitting batters (1:11:38)▶️ Visit our website: https://www.calstateomaha.com/▶️ Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/CalStateOmaha▶️ Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calstateomaha/▶️ Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/calstateomaha/▶️ Follow George Horton on Twitter: https://twitter.com/G_Horton8▶️ Follow Rick Vanderhook on Twitter: https://twitter.com/rick_vanderhook▶️ Suggest a guest: CalStateOmaha@Gmail.com
