After Twilight, they tried to follow the formula and make a bunch more movies that would appeal in the same way. The Mortal Instruments fails to do this. The only thing really good in here is Jamie Campbell Bower. He tries hard while the "star" girl is just bad.The villain is even worse, the betrayal by one in the midst is inconsequential and what they want is not at all defined. Oh Hollywood, just hire some people with chemistry and then you might stand a chance of having a movie.Hate Watching is to movies what candy is to Halloween. Bad for your health, but addicting.
Is the movie better? Is it more accurate to the books? Is everyone still sexy? Listen in and find out!
F2F's "Mortal March" kicks off with another dive into the waters of YA fantasy cinematic adaptations. This time, we're looking at a tale of half-human/half-angel warriors tasked to protect Earth from vampires, werewolves, and demons, and the "average" teenage girl pulled into their world after learning her secret destiny. It's a tale of ancient runes, goth costuming, and forbidden romance...VERY forbidden romance, in fact. Will the Hollywood version of this story have the guts to tackle one of the most controversial elements of the original book series? What is the point where "a lot" of exposition becomes "too much" exposition? And why did Phil Collins go so hard on the Disney TARZAN soundtrack? (Trust us, that last question actually has a connection here.) Our Twitter Our Facebook Our Instagram Our YouTube Trev's Letterboxd Chris' Letterboxd

Hannah & Rose discuss teen angst, poorly hidden cups, and why angels have been playing hooky for the past thousand years as they watch Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013).
For the second week in a row, Brian and I take you back to Dec 2019, when we recorded this and then didn't edit it for months cause that's the kind of responsible Saturday School hosts we are. It's a bittersweet episode and last minute addition to our syllabus after Godfrey Gao passed away last November, and we try to honor him through revisiting the 2017 Chinese romcom, "Love is a Broadway Hit." This season, we're exploring Asian films about Asian America, and this is a film produced in China but set in New York, where two Chinese American aspiring actors are trying to make it on Broadway. In this warped-mirror version of China's imagined New York, race (and lack of English-language skills, in the cast of leading lady Claudia Wang) is 100% not an issue when it comes to Hollywood and theater casting. This America is colorblind, gender-blind and super into Chinese culture, whether it be its food, opera or melodramas. It's not the best movie, but it's worth watching to understand the appeal of Godfrey Gao, who became a global icon when he was dubbed the first Asian male supermodel after signing with Louis Vuitton in 2011. Others knew him from Taiwanese dramas and briefly Hollywood (Magnus Bane in "Mortal Instruments: City of Bones"), and he eventually ended up working in China, which is where his heart suddenly stopped while participating in a physically strenuous challenge for a reality show. He was only 35. It's impossible to talk about his appeal without (unabashedly, repeatedly) fawning over his looks, but it's also hard not to see him as an underdog, as a Taiwanese-Malaysian Canadian trying to carve out a career in both Asia and America. Onscreen, he also had a genuine sweetness and innocent goofiness that made it easy to root for him. For us watchers of Asian American entertainment, which is often about how we don't fit in anywhere, he represented a fantasy of an Asian American man who could fit in anywhere, his hotness blinding and undercutting any potential prejudices. We knew that wasn't how things worked in real life, but sometimes that's how it worked in film, and it made us hopeful and happy. RIP Godfrey Gao.

Mundanes Brenna and Joe muddle their way through a three for one as they tackle Cassandra Clare’s 2007 urban fantasy novel The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, the CGI atrocity that is the 2013 film adaptation and the 2016 Freeform TV adaptation, Shadowhunters (which they declare the best version of the story). Expect A LOT of sighs, guffaws and questions as the pair address the book's generic narrative and love triangle, Clary Fray's lack of agency in the climax and the film's failures in set design, special effects and acting. Perhaps the best thing to come out of this week’s adventure is the concept of an Idris Elba World? Plus: Brenna advocates for Angie Thomas’ new book, On The Come Up while Joe pitches David K Yeh's A Boy At The Edge Of The World. Website - Tumblr - Twitter We discuss the adaptive choices made to transform City of Bones, the book into The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, the movie and Shadowhunters, the TV show.
We discuss the movie The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and the various reasons for why portals might be soggy... Spoilers: We can't really think of any reasons and the movie isn't telling.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013) is based off a book of the same name by Cassandra Clare. At least we're told so, but we're not sure if this film even has a plot. Starring Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Lena Headey, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, this young adult modern fantasy takes our main character Clary Fray (Collins) through the Shadow World—an alternate New York City where angels and demons are fighting a never ending battle. Scott and Max struggle with the plot at times, but decide ultimately that the source material was probably better than this end product. After all, it was turned into a Shadowhunters, a TV show currently airing on Freeform (formerly ABC Family). In 20 Questions, we try to plan a sequel to E.T. Once again, we would much rather answer your questions, so send us listener mail at TheCriticalBreakdownPodcast@gmail.com or leave it in a review for us on iTunes!

TJ wraps up the week with a look back at the box office report — crazy enough, ‘Gravity' has been the number one film for 3 weeks in a row. Can it pull off a fourth? We'll see. Robin Williams is in talks for Night at the Museum 3'. In other news, ‘Night at the Museum 3' is happening? Cool. Paul Greengrass responded to crew members and critics of his film ‘Captain Phillips' that it was a white-wash job on the good captain. And a fine response it was. TJ has some theories about why Agent Coulson is still alive and active in Marvel's TV Show ‘Agents of SHIELD'. Ben Kingsley is set to return to Marvel for an undisclosed project of some kind, presumably revising his role from ‘Iron Man 3'. ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes' will begin production in 2014 — because apparently the production company behind it wants to commit suicide… Michael Arndt has departed ‘Star Wars VII' as writer. TJ hopes this isn't a bad sign. And of course, find out what's new and what to see this weekend.
TJ chats with you about last weekend's box office successes and faiures and which of those films deserved and/or didn't deserve what it got. And there's plenty of Marvel and Joss Whedon in the news. Kevin Feige over at Marvel seems to think we'll be seeing more of The Hulk and Hawkeye around the Marvel universe. And we really want to know, will Joss Whedon kill off one of the Avengers? It's a tricky proposition either way really, and TJ explains. The Chinese think that ‘Pacific Rim' was nothing more than an American propaganda film. ‘Arrested Development' is getting the silver screen treatment. TJ reviewed ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones' and he did not like it! TJ also has a rumor that, if true, would be a fairly big spoiler for ‘Avengers 2', make sure to listen for that! Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright have directed episodes of ‘House of Cards' which will be airing next year. And of course, tune in to hear about what you might like to see this weekend!
Simon and Mark are back from their summer break. Lily Collins talks about The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Joe: Retaliation', a special version of ‘Iron Man 3' coming to China, Movieology Episode #4, a new ‘Star Trek Into Darkness' commercial which aired with an episode of ‘The Walking Dead', the bait and switch tactics of film trailers and why he empathizes with the makers of the films and trailers, a new trailer for ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones', ‘Finding Dory' and Ellen DeGeneres' announcement of the film, ‘the trailer announcement for ‘Catching Fire', clips, featurettes and entire streaming score for ‘Oblivion', the ‘MovieByte Podcast #38: Finding Pixar', some thoughts on the sad news of the passing of ‘Roger Ebert' and what an inspiration he was, and what you might like to see this weekend at the theater.
