La solita chiacchierata tra amici che mancava da un po'.
Sisters Soo-Jin and Soo-Kyung Hong are the violinist and cellist respectively of Trio Con Brio Copenhagen. They speak to online editor Davina Shum about their fine Italian instruments that they play – Soo-Jin a 1670 Andrea Guarneri and Soo-Kyung a Grancino cello c.1600. Soo-Jin and Soo-Kyung speak about how these two instruments – or ‘old fellows' in their words – prefer certain climates, as well as what they do to keep their instruments happy. It's not always easy, it seems! The members of Trio Con Brio Copenhagen are artistic directors of Chamber Music at Lundsgaard, a Postcard from which will appear in the March 2023 issue of The Strad. Underscoring the intro and outro of this episode is the third movement from Arensky's Piano Trio in D minor from the trio's album Shostakovich/Arensky Piano Trios, out on Orchid Classics. Both players are endorsed by Jargar Strings and Thomastik-Infeld Vienna. Soo-Kyung plays her Grancino cello courtesy of the Augustinus Foundation. Trio con Brio Copenhagen joins us on the Classical Post podcast today, which was recorded earlier this spring when they were on tour in the US. Right off the heels of winning the German Record Critics' Award, we spoke particularly at a time when many organizations had been grappling with presenting music written by Russian composers due to how their audience views the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Near the end of the episode we dive into this topic. Trio con Brio Copenhagen are actually all related. The violinist and cellist are Korean sisters (Soo-Jin Hong and Soo-Kyung Hong), and the Danish pianist, Jens Elvekjaer, married the cellist. Now based in the gorgeous European city of Copenhagen, it's a convivial family that plays a vital role in the cultural life of Denmark. We hear of an excellent Korean restaurant in Manhattan you definitely should try out, and as in many of our episodes, more wine recommendations. — Classical Post uncovers the creativity that exists behind great music. The Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 36, is a symphony in four movements written by Ludwig van Beethoven between 1801 and 1802.
Beethoven Symphony no. 5 in C minor, Op. 67The Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67, was finished and first performed in 1808. It achieved fame soon enough, going on to become one of the most popular compositions in classical music. Beethoven was in his mid-thirties: his personal life was troubled by increasing deafness. In the world at large, the period was marked by the Napoleonic Wars. The symphony soon acquired status as a central item in the repertoire: groundbreaking in terms of both technical and emotional impact, it had a large influence on composers and music critics, and inspired work by such composers as Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Bruckner, Mahler, and Berlioz. The 1st mov. was featured on the Voyager Golden Record.

Guida semiseria al cinema catastrofico secondo Houssy e Carfa.
The colossal Fifth and reposed Sixth Symphonies of 1808 showed two approaches to the heroic of the genre, and with the near-simultaneous work on the Seventh and Eighth Symphonies, Beethoven seems to continue to be inspired by characteristics that generate two sides of a coin in reshaping the dramatic possibilities of the symphonic genre, this time by “wield[ing] the rapier [Eighth] as well as the hammer [Seventh].” (Lockwood, Beethoven's Symphonies, 172). It is the rapier of wit, drawing on the idea of scherzo, that best characterizes Beethoven's reconsideration of the genre in the last symphony of his so-called Heroic period. One of the most significant developments Beethoven brought to the symphony he had inherited from Haydn and Mozart was to transform the Minuet and Trio movements that typified late eighteenth-century symphonies into Scherzos, which became central to the symphonies of Beethoven and many of his successors. Haydn himself prefigured this evolution in his string quartets, and he would say near the end of his life, “I wish someone would write a really new minuet.” As Elaine Sisman points out, “Although Haydn did not mention them, Beethoven's scherzos are usually considered to be the consummation of Haydn's wish.” (Sisman, “The Spirit of Mozart from Haydn's Hands,” 49.) Scherzos are, by definition, humorous. They thwart conventions—traditionally those of tempo, meter, and phrase length—and in so doing aim to delight, but also bring special attention to the conventions by denying them. This is particularly exemplified in the third movements of Beethoven's First, Second, and Fourth Symphonies, which tend towards a beautiful aesthetic, while the Third, Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Symphonies expand and intensify the scherzo even further, with moments suggesting the sublime, essentially consigning the gallantry of the minuet to a faded memory. While the scherzos of these latter symphonies suggest some sublime moments, as a rule they are not designed to overpower through an incomprehensible experience, but rather use the very fact that listeners can understand them by understanding what is unconventional about them, and through such novelty the audience experiences delight. In the Eighth Symphony, Beethoven expanded the scherzo character to encompass the entire symphony. Through unexpected structural twists, surprising rhythms and key relationships, and transparent orchestral textures, this symphony indeed recaptures some of the animating spirit of Beethoven's First Symphony, “a salute to the symphonic ideal of a previous age” (“Beethoven,” Grove Music Online), while at the same time innovates using witty and subtle twists that thwart some of the basic expectations of the symphonic genre, and thereby call them into question for reconsideration, much as had earlier occurred with the scherzo begging reconsideration of the context of the minuet.

Concert Pipeline’s three hundred fourteenth episode featuring Con Brio.
I dedicate this episode to Kim. It was a pleasure to have met you, we will see each other again on the other side. I met Sebastian while working at the Opernhaus Zurich: it was audition time and we just started talking. Keeping in touch with the people we meet in our private or professional lives leads to wonderful experiences like this. Together we decided to talk about what kind of approach Sebastian chose to record his first album. How he found himself abroad and how important it is to create an artistic personality. If you visit his website you will find two very interesting projects: "Let's get ready" and the "Bacco Software". Sebastian also tells us about his musician friends, the British band Will and te people and his experience with the Italian festival Hempiness Music Festival. Song in the end: "Con Brio", played by Sebastian Hayn (Clarinet) and Florian Podgoreanu (Piano) from the Album "Anno 1926". The Rock'N Vino podcast sits down with BottleRock Co-Founder and Partner of BottleRock Presents Dave Graham about this year's line-up. Find out about what's new, what's happening, and what to expect from the year's festival as long as a breakdown from Coco and Mike on this year's line-up. NAPA — BottleRock Napa Valley producers today unveiled the lineup for the seventh incarnation of their annual wine country festival, held at the Napa Valley Expo between May 24 and 26—Memorial Day weekend. This year's lineup features a new twist with the festival featuring dual headlining sets each night. Friday includes alt-rockers Imagine Dragons and rapper Logic. Saturday has Neil Young and Promise of the Real, along with R&B superstar Pharrell Williams. Rootsy rock band Mumford & Sons and guitar virtuoso Santana will close out the festival on Sunday, May 26. The lineup again features more than 80 artists over the three days. "We've expanded the capability of the second stage," BottleRock CEO Dave Graham said. "We wanted to be able to attract some major acts to play the second stage at the same time the main stage was playing, and that's exactly what we did this year." The bill is rounded out by a slate of eclectic artists, including Sylvan Esso, OneRepublic, Flogging Molly, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Cypress Hill, Tash Sultana, Lord Huron, Big Boi, Bishop Briggs, Jeff Goldbum & The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra and others. Graham said the addition of Young is particularly meaningful this year. "Neil Young has not performed in the Bay Area, publicly, since the last Bridge School Benefit Concert back in 2016," he said. "What an honor for us to have a legend like him up on our stage." BottleRock will again feature it's culinary stage pairing celebrity chefs with musicians, actors and Bay Area luminaries cooking up unique dishes for festivalgoers, along with the festival's focus on the region's best food and wine. The culinary stage lineup will be announced in April. "This year, BottleRock is also a part of the prize offerings for [TV show] Top Chef, so the winner will get an appearance on the Culinary Stage this year," Graham said. Last year, more than 120,000 camp out to see performances by Bruno Mars, The Killers, Muse and others. Tickets go on sale Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the festival's website. Prices range from $359 for a three-day general admission pass up to $1,599 for a three-day Skydeck and VIP Viewing passes. Platinum Passes for BottleRock, which cost upwards of $4,000, are sold out. The inaugural Sonoma Harvest Music Festival kicked off at BR Cohn Winery deep in th heart of Sonoma Country in Glen Ellen, CA this past weekend. The festival featured two afternoons filled with live music from The Avett Brothers, The Head & The Heart, ZZ Ward, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and many more. The festival was orgainzed in partnership with BottleRock Presents, producers of the massive annual BottleRock Napa Valley Music Festival. Orgaziners wanted to flip the script of Sonoma Harvest and make it the festival for people who don't like festivals,, one stage, all in the afternoon, fewer crowds and lines, and a more relaxed environment. The festival went off as planned with fans getting a unique opportunity to get up close with their favorite artists in an unmatched setting, putting a backdrop of vineyards and rolling hills behind the stage. Rock'N Vino took our first field trip for a live episode from the Sonoma Harvest Music Festival. First up, we'll talk with Ziek McCarter, frontman for the San Francisco-based Con Brio, who are touring in support of their latest album, Explorer. Con Brio kicked off the festival's second day with a phenomneal performance that brought fans to their feet early in the day. In this episode we talk to Sam Calhoun about being one of five full time, year-around employees of FloydFest. From being a stage actor in NYC, putting on hippy music festivals in Boone, NC, and trying to single-handedly change the mission of a small town newspaper, Sam's experience within the American arts and culture scene is both unique and expansive. He talks about what happens behind the scenes at the festival, what it costs to pay all the bands, and how FloydFest almost became too commercial one year and how they've made changes to not let that happen again. We check out three bands playing the festival this year: Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats "SOB" 32:32 Con Brio "Never Be The Same" 49:53 Femi Kuti "Dem Bobo" 1:16:32 ______________________________________________________________ A big thanks goes out to the main sponsor of this show, Photobooth: by Andy Cox Photography Andy Cox Photography is a proud sponsor of FloydFest for the second year, and will be located on the left-hand side of the main stage of vendor row. Tom Roberts (Great Britain 1856 – Australia 1931), Allegro con brio, Bourke Street west c. 1885–86, with additions 1890. Oil on canvas on composition board, 51.2 x 76.7 cm. National Library of Australia and National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.
MIT OCW: 21M.542 Interdisciplinary Approaches to Musical Time, IAP 2010
Tom Roberts’ painting Allegro Con Brio (fast with brightness) celebrates the vigour and confidence of the time and can be read as an accurate portrayal of 19th century Melbourne street life.
The Laurel Ensemble with Ann Laven, clarinet, Krisanthy Desby, cello, and Lori Lack, piano, perform Ludwig van Beethoven's Trio No. 4 in B Major: Allegro con brio, for the UC Davis Department of Music.
Selected Duets for Flute, Page 54 Number 10, Allegretto con brio, performed by David Summer. Italian composer Francesco Geminiani, the composer of this duet, was also an accomplished violinist. In 1715 he played his violin concerti with Handel at the keyboard, for the court of George I. Later, he authored a book called Art of Playing the Violin that was published in London in 1751. This duet may well have originally been written for 2 violins. The metronome setting for this performance is quarter note = 92.
National Gallery of Australia | Audio Tour | Turner to Monet: the triumph of landscape
Like Pissarro, in his series of Boulevard Montmartre paintings (cat. 83), the Australian Roberts drew inspiration from Monet’s Boulevard des Capucines 1873.1Although we cannot be certain whether, or when, Roberts saw Monet’s painting, the affinities between the works are compelling.2Monet’s, Roberts’s and Pissaro’s paintings all demonstrate a remarkable ability to capture the hustle and bustle of city life; they share an elevated viewpoint, reduced palette, and fractured brushstrokes. Moreover the three artists also embody a determination to embrace modernity: Paris after the Haussmann era, on the one hand, and the energy and excitement of ‘marvellous Melbourne’ on the other. Allegro con brio: Bourke Street west is a lively composition, painted with spirit. The Italian part of the title is a musical term, a playing instruction meaning ‘quickly, with brilliance’. It is one of a group of works painted by Roberts on his return to Australia from London in 1885. Back in Melbourne he resumed his friendship with Frederick McCubbin, then with Streeton and Conder: they regularly painted together at Box Hill, en plein air. The Heidelberg School painters, as they were known collectively, were interested in instantaneous effects, in experimenting with a range of short, broken brushstrokes. Because their works so effectively convey Australian conditions of heat and light, they are regarded as the first home-grown movement. Allegro con brio: Bourke Street west is structured around one of the ‘avenues’ crossing Melbourne’s central business district, at the intersection of Elizabeth and Bourke streets, on the Post Office corner. In the 1880s, as now, the west end of Bourke Steeet was a commercial zone. As McQueen points out, more than a third of the canvas is consumed by buildings.3Prominent signs announce businesses such as Booksellers Dunn & Collins, P. Philipson & Co. and John Danks. The smoke and haze in a clear blue sky, the contrast between the cream and tan exterior walls of the buildings with dark verandahs underneath, figures scurrying across the street or clustered in the shade, all make us aware of the uncomfortable heat. As if for emphasis, two carriages in the centre foreground seem to emerge from the dust. A row of cabs – cable trams were shortly to make horse-drawn vehicles redundant in much of the city – serves to highlight the recession of the street. The word ‘ICE’ appears at the centre, on the side of a cart. At right is the tricoleur French flag; it sits almost at the same spot as a blossom-covered tree in the Boulevard des Capucines. Perhaps it is not too fanciful to imagine that Roberts left us some clues to his sources. Allegro con brio: Bourke Street west is a scene portrayed with much economy in parts, from grand, colonial-style buildings painted in blocks, to the squiggle of a tiny dog in a patch of sun at lower right. In his distinctly Australian portrait of a city that was one of the largest in the industrialised world at the time, Roberts was ‘painting with fire’. Lucina Ward 1 One version of Monet’s Boulevard des Capucines was shown in the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874, the other at the Dowdeswell Gallery, London, in 1883. The paintings are in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow. 2 Although Allegro con brio: Bourke Street west is not dated, it is generally given to the years 1885–86, the revisions to 1890; Mary Eagle points out that Roberts sent four paintings to the 1886 Colonial and Indian Exhibition, London, but did not seem to have considered this work sufficiently resolved, or its perspective and drawing of an Academic standard, to include it; see Mary Eagle, The oil paintings of Tom Roberts in the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra: National Gallery of Australia, 1997, p. 28. 3 Humphrey McQueen, Tom Roberts, Sydney: Macmillan, 1996, see also ‘Tom Roberts: Allegro con brio, Bourke Street west’, viewed November 2007 http://home.alphalink.com.au/-log27/Roberts/roberts_allegro.htm
