Ever wonder how The Struts Life came to be? This week, I (Leah Jones, your loyal host and rock 'n' roll confidante) sit down with our elusive producer, Christian Swain, for a no-holds-barred origin story packed with backstage access, big ideas, and a bottle of Napa red. From discovering The Struts in a sun-soaked VIP section at BottleRock 2016 to nervously pitching the podcast in their dressing room years later, Christian reveals the cosmic alignment that led to this wild, glitter-drenched adventure. We go deep on the band's evolution, the future of rock, the soul of music in the age of AI, and why imperfection is the new perfection. Whether you're a day-one Strutter or just joined the movement, this episode is your front-row pass to how our circus began. In this special episode of The Struts Life, we're diving deep into Luke Spiller's highly anticipated solo album—set for release April 25th—and its intriguing connection to the iconic James Bond franchise. Inspired by Luke's initial pursuit to create a Bond theme, we explore how songs like "The Devil in Me" and "Angel Like You," featuring Kendall Rucks and the legendary Taylor Hawkins, laid the foundation for this exciting solo venture. Joined by resident Bond expert, producer Christian Swain, we cover Luke's favorite 007 themes, his preferred Bond eras, and speculate about casting the next iconic agent following Amazon's acquisition of the franchise. Whether you're a Bond aficionado or a casual listener, this episode offers fascinating insights into Luke's creative process and the timeless allure of Bond music. Learn more about your ad choices. This week, to celebrate the 100th episode of My Weekly Mixtape, I am creating "The Ultimate Mixtape" along with 65 guest curators, all of which were either previous My Weekly Mixtape guests, friends of the show or one of the amazing Patreon Mixtapers. And, because I simply couldn't celebrate 100 episodes in one sitting, this week will consist of three brand-new episodes!  Now, to create this Ultimate Mixtape, I started by asking these 65 different people the same question: If you had to choose one song for the ultimate mixtape (any song / any genre), that would be locked away in a time capsule for others to discover years or decades for now…which song would you choose and why? Now, I'm not lost on the fact that the question is just a spin on the “desert island song” question that a lot of my guests have been asked countless times. The twist for the next few episodes is: I am taking those 65 song choices (all of which are from various bands, artists, decades, genres and tempos), and curating them into what I hope will be a properly sequenced playlist from a musical perspective!  At the very least? This was a fun & unique twist on a question as old as interviews themselves. But at its best? Congratulations, you're listening to The Ultimate Mixtape!!  Guests appearing in Vol. 1 (in no particular order): Robin Wilson of Gin Blossoms, Jim Loughlin of moe., Drew Copeland of Sister Hazel, Don Jamieson of RockStrap & VH1's That Metal Show, Coco Kinnon of Winona Fighter, Bryan Scott of Union Underground, Britt Lightning of Vixen, Sandy MacKinnon of Royal Tusk, Christian Swain of Rock & Roll Archaeology / Pantheon Podcasts, Joe Milliken, Author of “Let's Go! Benjamin Orr & The Cars”, DT Carel of SpaceCastle, Ed Cunard of Fawkes & Friends, Steve of Something For Nothing: A Rush Fancast, Zack Derby of NeatCast, Ben Montgomery of Records Revisited Podcast, Matt Kennedy of XRadioX, Tony G. of Podioslave, Miles Schuman of Rock Camp: The Podcast, and last (but certainly not least!) two of the incredible Patreon Mixtapers: Seeker & Tom Hutchinson. Be sure to visit MyWeeklyMixtape.com to hear all of the songs we discussed in this episode, and join the My Weekly Mixtape Discord Server via the link on the episode page! Christian Swain co-founded Pantheon Podcasts because he's a lifelong fan of rock music and wanted to do everything in his power to help keep rock music alive and well. As that's exactly why we started our main show, The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast, and why we joined Pantheon in 2022. As a musician himself, Christian has always been drawn to the power of a live rock show - the power of which is unrivaled in the artistic world. Christian grew up in LA, getting into punk rock and Kick Out The Jams by the MC5 was an anthem to him growing up and helped guide him in his life and career. After Christian had the chance to interview founding member Wayne Kramer on his show, The Rock N Roll Archeologist, he then had the opportunity to finally see his idol live in San Francisco. But what also made the opportunity so cool is that Kramer was touring in 2018 with an all-star band dubbed the MC50 to celebrate 50 years of the MC5. So Kim Thayill (Soundgarden), Billy Gould (Faith No More) and others toured with Wayne to honor their catalog. And the show was so live that Christian couldn't help but get caught up in the mosh pit and celebrate like a teenager. He shares his story of that night with us here. However, Christian is also the CEO of Pantheon Media and Pantheon is raising money to help grow the world's #1 music podcast company. He gives listeners a breakdown of how they can support their favorite podcasts and invest in Pantheon with minimal money down. Welcome to episode 172 of Love That Album. It's December, so once again, it's time for me to reach out to 5 wonderful music media people in Melbourne to discuss with me their favourite music for 2023 – new or old (but recently discovered). As per usual, these magnificent people I admire brought some great “logs to throw on the conversational fire” (to steal from David Hepworth and Mark Ellen). However, to play all 5 people on the one episode would have made this a 4 hour plus episode.....not a sin in my book, but some people prefer shows with a more digestible time frame. To that end, I present this time around 3 of my guests, and some feedback from a couple of listeners all to talk about great music of the year. Episode 173 will feature the remaining 2 guests and more feedback. This time around we will hear from Rockwiz and Friday Revue host Brian Nankervis, music journalist and author Jeff Jenkins, and owner of Melbourne's Rocksteady Records Pat Monaghan. I am thrilled that these fellow music fans and knowledgeable gents would give of their time to this little podcast. Get out your pen and paper and prepare to make a list of your next favourite albums. Part 173 with Ian McFarlane and Billy Pinnell will be out within the next week or so. Thanks so much to anyone who listened to the show, was a guest on the show, contributed conversation to the LTA Facebook group, or reached out to me directly directly over the year. More coming in 2024 (you're welcome / sorry). Also huge gratitude to my brothers and sisters over at Pantheon Podcasts....some great shows and people over there who have corresponded with me over the year – there will be some crossover shows next year. “You will find music that will speak to what you are going through at any time in your life.”I recorded this conversation with Christian Swain LIVE at the Feast it Forward Festival. Christian is the founder, producer, and host of the Rock n Roll Archaeology Project. He's also involved with Pantheon Podcasts. He's the lead vocalist of Tinman and has been playing with his band for the last 17 years. Christian also describes himself as a political raconteur. As you'll hear in the show, he has interesting insight on all kinds of topics. It's one of the things that made this episode so powerful to record. This episode was a reminder to me that there's always a thread to be found in a great conversation. It doesn't matter who I talk to, there's always a route back to topics that help us remember who we are. Through these conversations, we get to meet life with presence to connect back with what is - allowing the energy of the moment to inspire everything we do and everything we become. “Tragedy opens up a different part of you in some ways.”Christian dives deep in this episode and shares his heart, his wisdom, and his life. We touch on so many topics, from the climate crisis to Christian's experience of being involved in a mass shooting. At each stage, we return to the influence of music, how it aids belonging, and the power it holds to help you discover who you are. Tune in now to hear Christian and I explore: How does music feed your soul? Waking up to bigger dimensions of life. PTSD from a mass shooting experience. Learning to move through grief. Discovering who you are through music. Hearing Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon for the first time. The role forgiveness has played in Christian's life. Climate crisis. “Art is about pulling out those feelings which are universal of which we all try to hide at one time or another.” Music is a powerful connector. It can bring us together, speak for us when the right words elude us, and activate specific moods to change the way we feel. There's music for every occasion, every one of life's moments, and for every human. Tune in now and soak up a beautiful conversation about discovering who you are through music. The growth was seismic - Abba's fleet of trucks had ‘Abba bigger than Volvo' emblazoned on the side - tours criss crossed continents, massive crews and endless road boxes and crates of gear and specialist equipment travelled by air as well as road and shows would take days to set up and take down. The Greatest Song Ever Sung (Poorly)

This week, The Greatest Song Ever Sung (Poorly) looks back at history through another music trivia challenge, and then dives headfirst into the history of karaoke, the thing that unites Adam and Ed in holy bromance-trimony despite all their obvious differences. They cover where it originated, who created it, how it came to the US, and some things that laid the groundwork for its popularity in the USA--and how does cartoonist Max Fleischer fit in to that? Then, they're joined by guest Christian Swain (host of the Rock N Roll Archaeology podcast) who brings some historical perspective on the longevity of certain songs at karaoke (and rock and roll in general), how karaoke changed people's minds about music and performance, and the worst band names of bands he's ever been in. He even sings an answer in the "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" quickfire game. You can dig deep into rock and roll history with Christian's podcast Rock N Roll Archaeology, and even deeper into all sorts of music podcasts in the Pantheon Podcast Network. And if you're lucky enough to be in the Northern California area, you should absolutely check out his band TinMan, or hire them to rock out your next big event. As always, you can find more info on the website (https://www.sungpoorly.com), and on social media–the show is @sungpoorly on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and now even TikTok. You can reach Adam and Ed via email by sending a message to sungpoorly@gmail.com. The discussion continues at The Greatest Song Ever Sung (Poorly) Podcast Facebook group. You know what it's like when you discover a band that was around a long time ago, and then you inevitably go down a rabbit hole and discover a whole lot more music in a “Kevin Bacon six degrees of separation” kind of way? That's happened to me over the last few months.Welcome to episode 151 of Love That Album.A few months back, Christian Swain at Pantheon Podcasts (who supports Love That Album, See Hear and a ton of other music shows) asked me if I knew of the 70s band from Montreal called Harmonium. At the time, I'd never heard of them, so I did some investigating…..I fell in love with what I heard. Their small but wonderful back catalogue started out as Laurel Canyon-esque like folk which evolved into progg-ish and art rock. It's not quite prog rock in the way that early Yes or Genesis were – there's not millions of time signature changes for one thing – but it does share some of the more classical song structures those bands started out with. Listening to their music led me to discover that Montreal was a major centre for prog bands, so I listened to some of those other bands as well. The band were hugely popular in Canada, but separated in 1978 at the top of their game. In 2020, their songwriter and lead singer Serge Fiori was approached to give his blessing for a re-arrangement of the entire Harmonium catalogue as a symphonic work. The result is Histoires Sans Paroles: Harmonium Symphonique. This is not the first time that a classically oriented interpretation of rock music has been attempted, but Harmonium's music seemed tailor made for such a reinvention. There's a wider sonic palette for the music to work under.I was offered the opportunity to speak with Serge for the show, and I was hugely keen to do so. He's a lovely guy who had a lot to say about the Quebec music scene of the 70s, as well as hearing his music translated into a medium different from its original conception. It's not easy to hand off your creative work to someone else to reinterpret, but to say Serge was delighted with the result would be an understatement. This album is all the more amazing considering it was recorded under pandemic conditions!!!!! A big feat for an orchestra.Serge is completely grateful for all that being a musician and composer has given to his life, and he is grateful to Simon LeClerc, arranger and conductor of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, for respecting the spirit of the music.Obviously, many thanks to Serge for his time, but additional thanks also go to Christian Swain for starting this off and and to Lisa Roy at Rock & Roy for making it happen. You can get Histoires Sans Paroles: Harmonium Symphonique in physical medium or download formats from https://www.harmoniumsymphonique.com/Download this episode of LTA from wherever you prefer getting your podcasts.Love That Album is proudly part of the Pantheon Podcast network. While the offers were tempting, we've always shied away. However, we recently were approached by the Pantheon Podcast Network and, after a productive conference call and the possibilities of growing the show and offering more to our listeners, we've accepted their invite. This week Pantheon Podcast Network founders Christian Swain and Peter Ferioli join us to talk about Decibel Geek joining the network. Additionally, you'll hear more about the network and the great collection of music podcasts that are a part of it including our friends at Rock and/or Roll, The Hustle, Should It Out Loudcast, and many more. We find out the real secret sauces that make DDIR what it is and what is the real mission!  And then it is a short interview from the road with Marcus.A 23-year-old guitar phenom and innovative songwriter, Marcus King can simultaneously switch from swaggering rock to supersonic soul – with his vocal powers taking center stage on debut solo record El Dorado, out now. The album is a Dan Auerbach produced, genre-bending release from a world-class young talent, that will establish him as one of the most soulful voices of his generation.Marcus started learning guitar at age three or four. He has played professionally since he was 11 and always knew he wanted to make music his life. A fourth-generation musician, Marcus has followed in his family's footsteps. His grandfather was a country guitarist, and his father continues to perform live. The Marcus King Band founded in Greenville, South Carolina in 2013, is his tight knit group. Drummer Jack Ryan, bass player Stephen Campbell, trumpeter/trombonist Justin Johnson, sax/steel guitarist Dean Mitchell along with Marcus—bring an irreplaceable combination of commitment, craft and soul to their work and are one of the hardest working bands today. They have played 140 shows in the last year and sold out countless venues, including Brooklyn Bowl three nights in a row and Marcus' namesake festival, The Marcus King Band Family Reunion. This year, the festival featured acts such as Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, Yonder Mountain String Band, Josh Ritter, Amanda Shires, and many more. From the start, Marcus earned rave reviews for his kinetic musicianship with The Washington Post describing him as a “guitar phenom” at age 20. Carolina Confessions, helmed by GRAMMY-Award winning producer Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson), topped the Americana radio charts and received critical acclaim from the likes of VICE Noisey, NPR and Rolling Stone, who described him as an “electrifying rock performer.” Marcus also recently embarked on a string of dates with Chris Stapleton, who called him “one of his favorite artists” when he recently joined him onstage. Marcus King continues to re-write his fast moving and surprising story. The Rock N Roll Archaeologist, Christian Swain sits down with Steven Hyden, the author of the newly released 'Twilight of the Gods: A Journey to the End of Classic Rock', a thoughtful meditation on the history, current state and potential futures of “Classic Rock” (his assertion is 1967-1999) music. If you are a deep Digger, you will not want to miss this deep conversation. Hyden is also the author of the critically acclaimed 'Your Favorite Band is Killing Me' offers an eye-opening exploration of the state of classic rock, its past and future, the impact it has had, and what its loss would mean to an industry, a culture, and a way of life. Since the late 1960s, a legendary cadre of artists—including the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, Black Sabbath, and the Who—has revolutionized popular culture and the sounds of our lives. While their songs still get airtime and some of these bands continue to tour, its idols are leaving the stage permanently. Can classic rock remain relevant as these legends die off, or will this major musical subculture fade away as many have before, Steven Hyden asks. In this mix of personal memoir, criticism, and journalism, Hyden stands witness as classic rock reaches the precipice. Traveling to the eclectic places where geriatric rockers are still making music, he talks to the artists and fans who have aged with them, explores the ways that classic rock has changed the culture, investigates the rise and fall of classic rock radio, and turns to live bootlegs, tell-all rock biographies, and even the liner notes of rock’s greatest masterpieces to tell the story of what this music meant, and how it will be remembered, for fans like himself. Twilight of the Gods is also Hyden’s story. Celebrating his love of this incredible music that has taken him from adolescence to fatherhood, he ponders two essential questions: Is it time to give up on his childhood heroes, or can this music teach him about growing old with his hopes and dreams intact? And what can we all learn from rock gods and their music—are they ephemeral or eternal? In the middle, you’ve got static, electricity, a whirlwind, and then on the right, the same person filled with personal growth and development. It’s going to suck when you break through the comfort zone. Notice that I didn’t say, ‘when you try to break through’? I prefer WHEN YOU BREAK THROUGH. It’ll be challenging, but after you break on through the discomfort, you are a higher, more achievement, further enlightened version of your old self. Contact Alexander at http://podcasterscoach.com. Rock N Roll History Christian Swain brings you rock n roll history. What was once a germ of an idea, is now a 6 podcast network. The Rock N Roll Archaeology Project brings you two generations of history, 50 years, from 1945-1995. It was a cultural phenomena in those times, but Rock starts to wane in 1995, and stops being the way it was before. Rock N Roll was a part of the cultural change at the time. The Rock N Roll Archaeology Project is hosted by Christian and is a highly produced show. He looks at Rock in the eye as a historian. This is a merging of Christian's passions - Rock and Podcasts. It is something that he should have started a long time ago. Podcasters are Artists, Christian agrees. It's from the production and the 'theater of the mind'. Christian also provides some very good advice on starting a Podcast Network.

Learnchair Radio host Bob Dragone interviews Christian Swain in this interesting and entertaining foray into the history of Rock and Roll.  Chris explains how his interest in both Rock and Roll and history led him to founding the RocknRoll Archaeology Project, a series of programs and podcasts that delves deeply into the history of Rock music.  a labor of love, Chris and his fellow archaeologists explore the roots of Rock following World War II and and discuss the branches that evolved over the years up to the present.  To the question of whether Rock is dead, Chris affirms this and gives the causes from the rise of Windows 95 and Napster to  the gradual demise of the guitar in favor of computer generated music.  Now new genres dominate and Chris and Bob discuss the reasons why.  Chris relates several stories about his own experiences as a rock musician and what it is like to play such historic venues as the Whisky A Go Go.  To the question of what characteristics define a good leader, Chris first mentions vision and how this shapes the relationship of leader to followers and the importance to a leader of surrounding him or herself with good people.  If you have an interest in Rock and Roll this is a podcast you should certainly listen to.
