Rosie Schaap grew up leading the archetypal New Yorker lifestyle. Her mother was impossibly glamorous and her father was a sportswriter who befriended a young boxer on the way to the Rome Olympics and stayed friends with him all his life. That boxer was Muhammad Ali. Among Rosie's most cherished possessions is a picture taken by the legendary photographer Carl Fischer with Ali in a safari suit tenderly looking down at her. The picture is now in her Antrim home. On Free State today Rosie Schaap tells the story of how a New York girl ended up in Glenarm following the death of her first husband from a rare form of cancer. Rosie was just 39. She talks about how she found in Ireland a way of talking about death she hadn't experienced in New York. She explains how a fascination with Roger Casement led her to Antrim and then to Glenarm where she made a new life and found love again. Rosie also provides some startling revelations about Joe's Harry Potter life at St Pat's Armagh.Free State with Joe Brolly and Dion Fanning is a Gold Hat Production in association with SwanMcG.For more on Free State: https://freestatepodcast.com/ Hosted on Acast. Most aspiring composers have narrow goals, seeing film (or video game) music or being a concert composer as the way to go, but if you can create music on paper, you actually have many options to contribute original music and add at least some income in the process. One of those ways is composing for publication that is marketed to schools and churches: music for school bands and orchestras, music for church choirs and handbells ensembles, and more. It's a tricky world that requires a flexible but creative composer who can still write very good music that is specifically tailored to various ages and levels. Bruce Tippette is a composer with dozens of published works through Alfred Music, Hal Leonard, C. Alan Publications, Carl Fischer, FJH, and more, many of which have been honored as J.W. Pepper's Editors Choice. Bruce talks with us about the skills needed to become this type of composer, how to navigate the sometimes intimidating grading system of school ensembles, strategies to getting published, and how all of this can lead to building relationships and getting commissioned work. You can explore Bruce's music and contact him through his website at https://www.brucewtippette.com/ If you have a question or feedback after listening to this episode you can leave a voice message at https://www.speakpipe.com/MusicianToolkit or you can send me a written message at https://www.davidlanemusic.com/contact You can find this episode and links to this show on all podcast apps from https://musiciantoolkit.podbean.com/ . Billy's return to touring in 2006 included a stop at one of the oldest arenas in the world. The concert was captured for posterity with a beautifully-shot, full-length video available for free online. On July 31, 2006, Billy and the band, minus a key member, played outdoors at the Coliseum in Rome. It was many fans' first glimpse at the lineup he'd keep for the next 17 years and running, more or less. And, what a place to see him: performing just steps away from the centuries-old landmark. While Crystal Taliefero wasn't at this show, longtime members Tommy Byrnes, Mark Rivera, David Rosenthal, and Andy Cichon were there. So were relative newcomers Carl Fischer on horns and Chuck Burgi, who was on his first tour as Billy's new drummer. The show is available on YouTube with a soundboard mix that highlights the band almost more than Billy himself. While it's a great document of the new band starting out, listeners can also key into the harmonies, background parts, and delicate orchestrated parts that make Billy's music shine. For the first in an end-of-year extravaganza of episodes, we're back to discuss the work of legendary Chilean documentary filmmaker Patricio Guzman. Active since the early '70s, Guzman started out as a chronicler of the Allende years, capturing the right-wing backlash and subsequent coup on camera before going into a decades-long exile in Europe. Since then, his films have dealt almost exclusively with the painful memory of the junta and its victims, the violent injustices of the Pinochet years and the condition of his homeland, turning away from the conventional third-cinema documentary form of his early work towards something increasingly poetic, metaphorical and personal. With Guzman's latest film, MY IMAGINARY COUNTRY, having its UK premiere at LFF 2022, and THE CORDILLERA OF DREAMS (the final part of a trilogy alongside NOSTALGIA FOR THE LIGHT and THE PEARL BUTTON) also going on general release this year, we (belatedly) take the opportunity to appraise his seminal filmography. This week's quiz: On 27 August, I asked you a question about an article written by RFI English correspondent Murali Krishnan: “India - Africa partnership gets a boost with investment conclave”. Murali reported on an investment meeting in New Delhi that brought together several African leaders to discuss boosting commercial ties between India and African countries. Krishnan quoted India's Foreign minister – Subrahmanyam Jaishankar – who said that India was among the leading countries that have invested on the African continent. As you are surely aware, China also invests heavily on the African continent. However, the investment policies are quite different – and that was your question: what exactly is the difference between China's investment policy on the continent, and India's? The answer is: As Murali wrote: “Unlike China which has concentrated on creating infrastructure and extracting natural resources, India through its investments, has focused on its core competencies of human resources development, information technology, maritime security, education and health care … A senior diplomat from Nigeria told RFI: ‘Indian project construction and financing in Africa is aimed at facilitating local participation and development. Indian companies rely more on African talent and do capacity building of the local population.'” In addition to the quiz question, there was the Bonus Question: What is your dream day off from school or work? The winners are: RFI Listeners Club member Kanwar Sandhu from British Columbia in Canada, who is also the winner of this week's Bonus Question; Golam Mahina, a member of the Shetu RFI Listeners Club in Naogaon, Bangladesh, and RFI English listeners Saruar Jahan Mohsin from Kishorganj, Bangladesh; Kalyani Basak, and Karuna Kanta Pal, both from West Bengal, India. Congratulations winners! Here's the music you heard on this week's program: “You've Changed” by Carl Fischer, arranged by Laurent de Wilde and performed by the Laurent de Wilde Quartet; “Let's Go Fly a Kite” from Mary Poppins by Richard and Robert Sherman, sung by David Tomlinson; “Raga Piloo” by Ravi Shankar, performed by the composer and Yehudi Menuhin; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “The Cakewalk” from Children's Corner by Claude Debussy, performed by the composer, and “Angelus Novus”, written and performed by Hatis Noit. Good morning, heartache.
In their efforts to help businesses and taxpayers cope with economic disruptions, Congress and the IRS have passed a veritable blizzard of new rules and deadline changes, many of them affecting retirement savings. Some of the new rules leave certain issues vague or unaddressed, deliberately so in some cases in order get these approved or legislation passed, with an understanding that these issues will be resolved later. But don't feel bad, even the pros are bewildered by some of this.More From Cama Plan & Carl FischerCamaPlan Website:https://www.camaplan.com/More From IRS Tax:IRS Website:https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus-tax-relief-and-economic-impact-payments

Carl was a former owner of Global Financial Resources, a mortgage broker company, and he is a third-generation real estate investor and president of Presidential Properties. What You Will Learn: Carl explains what an IRA (Individual Retirement Account) is and shares how the IRS allows you to take a tax break on funds you contribute to an IRA. He explains why he favors a Roth IRA over a traditional IRA and explains the difference between the types. Carl shares how a self-directed IRA works and why it offers more investment flexibility than an IRA where someone else makes planning decisions on your behalf. He shares how funds in a self-directed IRA can be used to buy tax liens and deeds. Carl shares how banks and brokerage houses often call an account “self-directed” even though they restrict your investments to their in-house offerings, and he explains how a truly self-directed account allows you to choose any investments you want. Carl explains the services his company, CamaPlan, offers. He explains the limited restrictions on what you can use your funds in your self-directed IRA to invest in, and he shares how his company differs from banks and brokerages. Carl discusses why tax lien and deed investors would want to use their IRAs for their investments, and he goes over the tax benefits of using a retirement account rather than a bank account for these types of investments. Carl shares how to get more information about self-directed IRAs, and he discusses the transparency and availability of information that investors can take advantage of to better understand IRAs. It is an incredible honor to be the first to show case a new album on FM radio. In this episode of My Father's Place Radio, Richard Solomon interviews Bill Heller of the Rippingtons. The new album is entitled "Open Road." This is his official bio: Bill Heller, best known as the keyboard player for the legendary contemporary jazz group the Rippingtons, grew up in a very musical household on Long Island, NY. His Dad was a conductor (NYC Subway), and his Mom orchestrated all the activities around the house! From an early age, he and his two brothers were surrounded by family get-togethers filled with music. It wasn't long before he got into the act, playing accordion! Bill attended Fredonia State University, and received a degree in Music Education. Bill met Russ Freeman (leader of the Rippingtons) while recording at his studio in Colorado. Russ asked him to play on a few tracks that he was producing for his and Craig Chaquico's "Redwoods to the Rockies". His first Rippingtons recording was “Topaz”, back in 1998, and he began performing live with the band in March of 2001. Since then, Bill has co-produced all of Craig’s CDs, of which a few songs made it to the #1 position on the smooth jazz charts! Bill released his first effort as a solo artist Find the Way in 2014. The project contains 12 titles, all written and produced by Bill. This recording features performances by Jeff Kashiwa and Eric Marienthal, and three different rhythm sections. From the Rippingtons Dave Karasony-drums and Rico Belled-bass, Joel Rosenblatt-drums (Spyro Gyra, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bill Evans, Michel Camillo) and Dave Anderson-bass (Bill Evans, Art Garfunkel, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bob Baldwin), Frank Belluci-drums (Bucky Pizzarelli, Oz Noy, Rachel Z) and Jim Cammack-bass (Ahmad Jamal), also Carl Fischer-trumpet (Billy Joel, Maynard Ferguson), and Luis Bonilla-trombone (Diana Ross, Marc Anthony, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra). For the last ten years Bill has served as the Musical Director for the Long Island Hall of Fame awards shows. He provided arrangements and incidental music for these shows. The bands he assembled accompanied such acts as Daryl McDaniels of RUN-DMC, Kurtis Blow, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Gary US Bonds, Felix Cavaliere, The Lovin Spoonful, Charlie Daniels, Eddie Money, Steve Vai, Vince Giordano, and more. Some of the legends inducted at these shows have included Clive Davis, Ron Delsner, Lou Reed, Eddie Palmieri, Charles Koppelman, and Steven Van Zandt. Pearls of wisdom just drop out of Denise Eaton’s mouth with every sentence she speaks. In this episode, Denise and Ryan expand on some of the topics covered in her recent blog post (link in the notes below). There is practical advice here for every director, from first year to veteran. This episode WILL change how you direct or teach your choir! Listen [Subscribe on iTunes] [Subscribe on Android] Highlight to Tweet: “We determine the weather in rehearsal.” - Denise Eaton “You’re either getting better or you’re getting worse. Nothing stays the same.” -Denise Eaton Show Notes: Self-reflection and self-evaluation is essential to growth. Identify ineffective habits. Your choir should know the purpose and goals behind your methods. Know YOUR choir: the one that is really in front of you, not your choir from last year, and not the one you wish you had. This must inform your repertoire selection. Write a real lesson plan, that reflects your score study. Think through how you are going to teach each section, each part. View it through the lens of the learner. Score study is essential. You are less of a teacher without it. Record your warm ups, so you can check and see if you are getting the tone/vowel/pitch you want. All warm ups should have a purpose. Bio: Thirty-five year veteran music educator, author and editor Denise Eaton is known for her innovative and practical teaching style. She willingly shares her ideas with a unique, humble and engaging voice, capitalizing on her experiences in the high school and collegiate rehearsal. Denise has presented over fifty workshops in Oklahoma, Georgia, Louisiana, Iowa, Ohio, Florida, Alabama and Texas, including Southern ACDA as well as multiple appearances at Texas Choral Director’s and Texas Music Educator’s Association state conventions. The co-author of three sight- reading books: SMART (Sight Reading Made Accessible Readable and Teachable), SMART Minor, and InSight Singing. She is the editor of Choral Error Detection by Paul Hondorp and is currently writing her 4th book, STEPS: Strategies & Tools Encouraging Proficient Sightsinging. An undergraduate from the University of Texas at Austin, Eaton received the MM in Conducting from Sam Houston State University where she currently teaches Secondary Choral Methods, conducts the SHSU Women’s Choir, coordinates the annual summer Teaching High School and Teaching Middle School Choral workshops, Area Choir workshop and the annual summer All-State Choir Camp. Prior to her 2011 appointment at Sam Houston State University, Eaton had a highly respected career as a high school choir director for twenty-nine years where choirs under her direction performed for numerous state and regional conventions. We are featuring double bassist Gaelen McCormick on today’s episode. Gaelen is a member of the Rochester Philharmonic, teaches at Nazareth College and the Eastman Community Music School and is the author of Mastering the Bow, a two-part series for bass. Part one is based on the violin studies of Franz Wohlfahrt, and part two features off-the-strings strokes. We had a wonderful conversation about her early years in music, studying with Jeff Turner for graduate school (and you can listen to Jeff on the podcast—he was a guest back on episode 26), structuring practice time, the George Vance Progressive Repertoire series, and many other topics. Before and after the interview, we feature Gaelen and Ed Paulsen performing a couple of Dave Anderson’s wonderful duets, and you can check out our interview with Dave on episode 75 of the podcast. About Gaelen: Ms. McCormick has been a member of the Rochester Philharmonic’s bass section since 1995. Before joining the RPO, she held positions with regional orchestras such as the Erie (PA) Philharmonic, the Binghamton Philharmonic and the Albany Symphony. Ms. McCormick has performed regularly with other major orchestras, including the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Syracuse Symphony. She holds degrees in performance from the Eastman School and Carnegie Mellon University. Teaching the double bass to students of all ages has become a significant part of Gaelen’s life. She joined the faculty of Nazareth College in 2010, and has been the bass instructor for the Eastman Community Music School since 2001. She enjoys working with talented high school aged string players in the summer at Eastman’s Music Horizons program where she teaches chamber music and gives bass lessons. In 2003, she was invited to teach for the year at Duquesne University’s City Music Center, a program for talented, pre-college students. Gaelen has given masterclasses and recitals at Ithaca College, Williams College, the College of St. Rose, and Roberts Wesleyan College. In 2013, she gave classes on double bass technique at both the International Society of Bassists convention in Rochester and the NYSSMA Winter Conference. “Mastering the Bow”, the first of three books on double bass bow technique, was published by Carl Fischer in 2013, and the second will be published during the 2014 season. Playing chamber music has been a passion for Ms. McCormick. Before moving to Rochester, she often performed with the St. Cecilia Chamber Orchestra (Albany, NY) as their sole bassist. During her tenure in Pittsburgh, she became the founding bassist of the Pittsburgh Live Music Chamber Orchestra. She was the founding member of the innovative string quintet “Gibbs and Main”, and recorded a cd of tango standards with them, and commissioned a new work for the ensemble by Judd Greenstein. In recent summers, she has been performing with the Music in the Mountains chamber orchestra, a festival based in Durango, Colorado. She is frequently invited to play chamber music with musicians from around the country in festivals such as the Roycroft Chamber Music Festival and the Syracuse New Music Ensemble. This summer, Ms. McCormick will make her debut appearance at the Canandaigua Lake Chamber Music Festival. Gaelen has been involved in volunteering and arts advocacy, and is proud to be the representative for the RPO in the International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians. She is honored to be a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Kappa Lambda, groups recognizing and supporting excellence in the humanities and in music specifically. In her spare time, Gaelen enjoys kayaking, Argentine tango and West Coast swing dancing, and spending time with her toddler Clara.
