One Symphony with Devin Patrick Hughes
Marina Arsenijevic, Pianist Preaching Unity Through Diversity

One Symphony with Devin Patrick Hughes

In this episode of One Symphony, conductor Devin Patrick Hughes interviews acclaimed pianist and composer Marina Arsenijevic to discuss her journey that led to her latest album, Chopin Obsessions. Arsenijevic shared insights into her upbringing in former Yugoslavia, the influences that shaped her musical style, and her unwavering commitment to promoting unity through diversity. Marina Arsenijevic is as an inspiration to artists and audiences alike. Her journey of unity through diversity reminds us of the transformative power of music and its ability to bring people together, even in the most challenging of times.  Growing up in a communist country, Arsenijevic was exposed to a wide range of musical genres, from Western pop to traditional Balkan music, which would later play a significant role in shaping her unique compositional style.  As the disintegration of Yugoslavia began in the early 1990s, Arsenijevic found solace in her music. She recognized the power of music to transcend borders and bring people together, even in the face of conflict and adversity. “I wanted to show our common humanity through history, culture, through music, so I started to blend diverse melodies and rhythms to unite us,” she explained. Arsenijevic's commitment to promoting unity through diversity led to the creation of her PBS special, Marina at West Point: Unity Through Diversity. The concert, which featured the West Point Chorus and Band, showcased a diverse range of musical styles and pieces from Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue to Freddie Mercury's "Bohemian Rhapsody" alongside Arsenijevic's own compositions. The special aimed to share Arsenijevic's message with a wider audience. During the interview, Arsenijevic also discussed her latest album, Chopin Obsessions. She discussed the influence of Chopin's relationships with aristocratic women on his compositions and the evolution of his musical style throughout his career. Arsenijevic also drew parallels between Chopin and other composers of the Romantic Era.  When asked about her advice for young composers and pianists, Arsenijevic emphasized the importance of using one's own cultural background and traditional music. She encouraged artists to explore the melodies and rhythms of their heritage and incorporate them into their compositions.    MARINA ARSENIJEVIC is an international award-winning pianist and composer, star of the Emmy-nominated Public Television program, “Marina at West Point: Unity through Diversity”which has been broadcast to more than 170 Million viewers on PBS Stations all across the country. Marina created the program and performed with the 120-member joint ensemble of the West Point Band and West Point Cadet Glee Club. The Concert was recorded live at West Point's historic Eisenhower Hall and as of 2020 become one of the longest running single concerts at PBS TV Network. Thank you for joining us on One Symphony. The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009

Light pollution has been impacting our view of the heavens for many years. Globe at Night is a citizen science campaign that invites people around the world to measure their night sky brightness and contribute data to the Globe at Night database. A recent paper based on Globe at Night data shows the night sky is brightening more than previously thought based on satellite measurements. In this podcast, Connie Walker and Christoper Kyba discuss this new research.    Bios:  Rob Sparks is in the Communications, Education and Engagement group at NSF's NOIRLab in Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Christopher Kyba is a physicist who has been studying light in the outdoor environment since 2009. He works with data from many different sources, ranging from satellite observations and aerial photos to all sky imagery and observations with the human eye. He has led the development of a number of citizen science projects and tools, including Radiance Light Trends, the Loss of the Night app, My Sky at Night, and most recently the Nachtlichter (Night Lights) app. Dr. Connie Walker is an astronomer at NSF's NOIRLab in Tucson, Arizona USA. She has been working to abate light pollution in different ways regionally, nationally and internationally over the last 20 years. She has been involved with revising local lighting laws to holding conferences nationally and internationally to being on the International Dark-Sky Association Board of Directors (twice) to holding leadership positions at the International Astronomical Union (and helping to form a resolution on people's right to starlight). The launching point was helping to create the international citizen-science program, Globe at Night, that asks citizen scientists to rate their night sky brightness which compares star charts with different numbers of stars to what they see in the night sky.    Links:  NOIRLab Press Release: https://noirlab.edu/public/news/noirlab2302/ Announcement by the International Dark-Sky Association: https://www.darksky.org/new-study-highlights-the-need-for-urgent-action-to-reverse-runaway-light-pollution/  Article from Science: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adf4952 Full paper from Science: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abq7781   NOIRLab social media channels can be found at: https://www.facebook.com/NOIRLabAstro https://twitter.com/NOIRLabAstro https://www.instagram.com/noirlabastro/ https://www.youtube.com/noirlabastro   We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs.  Just visit: https://www.patreon.com/365DaysOfAstronomy and donate as much as you can! Suena “The King of the Spain” de The Tallest Man On Earth, homenaje a nuestro Rey en fuga. Legacy!”.

In our pursuit of purpose, sometimes we get stuck in our own passion projects. It is especially during these times that it is important to look beyond ourselves and find ways to help others—especially those that are most vulnerable. Though it is possible to contribute to worthy causes around the world, how might you start locally? I share my story of working with the wonderful School on Wheels Organization (schoolonwheels.org) in California—as a volunteer tutor to homeless children—and how it had a profoundly positive impact on my life. How might you serve others in need for a small amount of time every week? What philanthropic need speaks to you most? I'd love to hear from you on this! :) This episode is dedicated to My Sky ;) Namasté. selenasage.com // Facebook + IG: Selena Sage - Author

Feliz Día de San Valentín!  Love and romance en España. Today is the el 14 de Febrero – the14th February and well rather predictably this episode takes a loving look at Valentine's Day here in Spain. I'm going to look at what loved-up Spaniards get up to on this special day for lovers – i'll be comparing the Spanish Valentine's Day with Valentine's Day back home in the UK and examining some of the romantic traditions that happen here. I'll also check out regional romantic celebrations, such as Catalonia's St. George’s Day or La Diada de Sant Jordi when couples rejoice their love on April 23 by exchanging books and roses. For people from Valencia, the most romantic day of the year is the 9th of October, when they celebrate both the Day of the Valencian Community as well as the Day of Saint Dionysius (Sant Dionís), locally known as the patron saint of lovers. I'll be asking the question – are the Spanish a romantic bunch? Are they better lovers than other nationalities, especially us Northern Europeans? I'll attempt to answer this question. To my surprise it's claimed that the bones of St. Valentine can be found in Madrid? Resting on plush red velvet within a golden reliquary, the supposed remains of this most romantic of saints are housed in the church of San Anton in Chueca neighbourhood. The skull along with various other bones were discovered in some Roman catacombs at the end of the 18th century. Having nowhere to put these remains, The Pope made gave them to the king of Spain as a present. Finally, for a bit of fun we'll look at some language of love... Some terms of endearment and expressions that are useful whether you're attached or not. Terms of Endearment: MY HALF AN ORANGE 'mi media naranja' MY FATTY 'gordi'. LITTLE PIGEON 'Pichoncito/a' MY LITTLE INSECT/BUG 'bicho' or 'bichito'. LA PARIENTA 'the missus' MY SOUL 'mi alma' MY LOVE/DARLING 'Mi amor' 'cariño' MY SKY 'mi cielo' CORAZÓN 'heart' **************************** FOLLOW WHEN IN SPAIN

J. Bernard Calloway and James Monroe Iglehart have both traveled a long journey with MEMPHIS, the new Broadway hit. They stop by to tell us about the journey, their Broadway debuts, and to share a couple songs from the just-released cast album with us! GLORY DAYS may have only lasted one day on Broadway, but how many Broadway shows are on *your* resume? The cast album was just released, and composer/lyricist Nick Blaemire is here to tell us about the release, and the show's history and journey to it's Glory Day. Michael Tester wanted you to know how teens really talk and feel, and his exploration led to the new musical, MOST LIKELY TO: THE SENIOR SUPERLATIVE MUSICAL. He stops by to talk about the show opening in January, and brings by three members of the cast; Melissa Rapelje, Katie Hoffman and Alexander Greif, to perform a number from the show, live in our studio! GREAT MUSIC! - You'll hear a new song, "My Sky" sung by Stephanie Block which is from the upcoming CD NO MORE REVIVALS, VOL. 1, "I've Got the World on a String" from Ashley Brown's new solo CD, SPEAK LOW, and Sierra Boggess singing "I've Got the World on a String" from the new NEW YORK CITY CHRISTMAS CD.
