How do you get out of a spiral of shame and guilt and try to make the world a better place?Today we meet Max Yeshaye Brumberg-Kraus and we're talking about the queer book that saved their life: The Once and Future King by T.H. White.Max studied classics and theatre at Beloit College, received their MA in Theology and the Arts from United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College. They are the author of The(y)ology: Mythopoetics for Queer/Trans Liberation with Punctum Press and the collection of poems Visions of Divine Love with AC Books, which brings together Julian of Norwich with Divine the Drag Queen. Their work explores memory, historiography, gender/sexuality, and myth through embodied practices.Terence Hanbury "Tim" White was an English writer. He is best known for his Arthurian novels, which were published together in 1958 as The Once and Future King. One of his best known is the first of the series, The Sword in the Stone, which was published as a stand-alone book in 1938. Despite leading a single and very private life, Sylvia Townsend Warner argued in her definitive 1967 biography of white that he was gay.The Once and Future King retells the saga of King Arthur, a fantasy classic as legendary as Excalibur and Camelot, and a poignant story of adventure, romance, and magic that has enchanted readers for generations.Connect with Maxwebsite: maxyeshaye.comfacebook: facebook.com/max.brumbergkrausinstagram: @cicadalamourFor ticket info for Incident at Peckerpah Ridge on March 21 and 22 head to: squirrelhausarts.com/eventsOur BookshopVisit our Bookshop for new releases, current bestsellers, banned books, critically acclaimed LGBTQ books, or peruse the books featured on our podcasts: bookshop.org/shop/thisqueerbookBuy your own copy of The Once and Future King: https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9780441627400Buy The(y)ology: Mythopoetics for Queer/Trans Liberation: https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9781685710866Become an Associate Producer!Become an Associate Producer of our podcast through a $20/month sponsorship on Patreon! My guest today is Simon Yugler, a longtime friend who is a psychedelic therapist, educator, and the author of Psychedelics & the Soul—a mythic guide to deep healing, depth psychology, and cultural repair. With a background steeped in Jungian thought and apprenticed to earth-based wisdom traditions, Simon walks the liminal spaces where myth and medicine meet, where the personal journey of the soul intertwines with the great unfolding of culture. In our conversation, we explore the archetypal landscapes revealed through psychedelic experience—those luminous, perilous realms where the collective unconscious speaks in image and story. We trace the deep roots of mythopoetics and their role in personal and societal transformation, turning to tales such as the Inuit folktale Eagle's Gift to illuminate what it means to undergo initiation in a world that has largely forgotten its rites of passage. We also wade into the turbulent waters of modern politics, asking: What might a mythopoetic lens reveal about our current crises? How do we make sense of an era teetering between collapse and renewal? And what are the practical tools for integrating the peak experiences—psychedelic or otherwise—into the hard soil of daily life? This episode is an invitation to journey into the deep mythic currents shaping our time and the soul's quest to remember its place within them.Simon's Book Tour Dates* Denver, 3/17 w/ Jaz Cadoch (@_jaz.ie) at Greenspaces* Santa Fe, 3/22 w/ Michael Garfield (@michaelgarfield) at The Arc Bookstore* LA, 3/27 w/ Tony Moss (venue to be confirmed)* Bay Area (3/29, venue to be confirmed)* Nevada City, 3/31, at ElixartLINKS* Simon Yugler's Official Website* Book - Psychedelics & The Soul: A Mythic Guide to Psychedelic Healing, Depth Psychology, and Cultural RepairUPCOMING OFFERINGS: Heads up, the doors open for the next round of The Deep Masculine, my 3 month online offering for men (and now women) to repattern your relationship to sex, soul & purpose. John is an Initiatory Witch, Emergence Facilitator, Wilderness Guide and Transmedia Bard focused on the work of cultural redemption. Holding space for the great grief of our times, he designs and facilitates rituals and rites of transformation, in service to regulating the personal and collective nervous systems back to belonging with the Earth. In 2021, John co-founded The School of Mythopoetics dedicated to the Initiation of Soul. In 2024, his decade-long award-winning documentary, The Village of Lovers, about the Tamera Peace Village in Portugal premiered globally alongside A Cry From the Future Visionary Gathering he co-produced.  John speaks about his upbringing in rural Colorado, and as a teen, in the ‘culturally insulated' US during the punk movement, and experimenting with psychedelics, influencing both his anti-authoritarian view and his connection to earth. He shares the synchronicities that led him on a life-changing solo trip to Central America for 4 months of heart-led backpacking and, his current life path.   Giancarlo and John discuss mythology & eros, they speak about ways of opening up to spirit and cosmic guidance. They discuss relational repair and holding space for our pain, and its potency to open up space for spiritual guidance and the soul journey. They speak about rites of passage and the initiations humans experience in their lives, as well as understanding emotions from a mythical perspective not just a psychoanalytical one.

Inviting in ancient traditions and contemporary knowing, they are in a conversation to explore how ‘white' bodied kin can be taking openhearted responsibility for the slow, deeply generative and liberatory process of uncovering white supremacy and choosing to live with true accountability. Through artful sequences of ritual, poetic weavings and embodied interactions with matter, metaphor and mystery, Miche and Yolanda inhabit the deep trust work needed for nurturing conversations, kinships and cultivating communities of freedom between cultures. In this conversation, Carl speaks with John Wolfstone. John is third-generation settler, working on the Traditional and Unceded territory of the Southern Pomo and Coast Miwok Peoples. His blood and bones hold Hebraic, Norse and Celtic ancestry, and his spirit is from the Stars. As a wilderness rites-of-passage guide, ritualist, community consultant, relationship coach, and transmedia story-teller, John is on a mission to reclamate adulthood initiation rites-of-passage. Holding space for the great grief of our times, John designs and facilitates rituals of transformation, in service to regulating the personal and collective nervous systems back to belonging with the Earth. John apprenticed in numerous indigenous and ancestral ritual healing lineages during his decade long adulthood initiation quest, and bows in reverence to his many teachers, mentors, guides and elders. John tends thresholds of all kinds, and can often be found praying by a fire, whistling bird song, invoking his ancestors, and training his craft as a sacred huntsman. John is also one of the cofounders of the School of Mythopoetics. In our conversation, we explore initiation, and why it has been so central to the human experience. We also talk about what is lost, in terms of the presence of adults and elders in the world, when practices of initiation are absent in a culture. We talk about the markings of adulthood, exploring some of the indicators that someone has grown into an adult, or not. And we look at how to grow a literacy with initiatory process, and for the many of us who have not grown up in cultures with intact rituals and rites of passage, how to bring these practices and principles into our lives and our communities. John is facilitating a year-long adulthood initiation ritual apprenticeship through the School of Mythopoetics beginning November, 2022, and you can find more about that here. https://www.schoolofmythopoetics.com/ritual-apprenticeship You can find more about John and his work here: johnwolfstone.com www.schoolofmythopoetics.com

Which is why the alternate name for this episode is Community is a Pain in the Ass. It's not easy to be building community while dealing with ancestral grief and despair over living in a fragmented, partial society. And yet people make this effort, with goodwill and humor, and I doff my patchy hat to them.We get into communication, communion working through conflict, and we also get into nomadic community, which may well be the oldest form of community for humans, and is less about just roaming through the landscape and more about cyclically tending the land. We'll be hearing from Tyson Yunkaporta about this from the Apalach band in Australia, who is working in the indigenous knowledge lab in deacon university working on bringing in functional nomadic communities in the modern world. How dreams help us recreate our own stories is a kind of nighttime narrative therapy. Also the direction that the dreams are leading us is not always where we want to go! Our guest today Larry Sorkin reads several of his dream-inspired poems and shares some of his life-changing dreams. He also explains why he believes that amplifying dreams (such as creating poetry around them) is preferable to more reductionist ways of working with them. We take a call from previous guest Gilda Syverson who describes that much of the value in creating a poem comes during its revision and in noticing what is uncomfortable. You can find the show we did with Gilda January 10 at https://ksqd.org/ancestral-dream-poetry-with-gilda-syverson/. BIO: Larry Sorkin has taken a Jungian and depth psychological approach to dreams for over forty years, strongly influenced by the work of James Hillman and Stephen Aizenstat. While enjoying a dream group as one way to amplify dreams, his primary approach is through active imagination that comes from writing poetry. He doesn't so much work with dreams as the dreams work on him, profoundly changing his life. He often holes up on his ridgetop overlooking the North Carolina Piedmont, daydreaming into the fields and onto paper. His poetry book Uncomfortable Minds came out in 2021. You can contact him at his webpage LarrySorkin.com We play clips from the following two guest-selected songs: Ambient music created by Rick Kleffel new every week. Of all the myths and stories we find shared ubiquitously around the globe one of the most persistent and captivating is that of hairy, wild, human-like creatures living in the wilderness. How are they represented in different cultures? Are they merely myth or is there a physical reality to them? And if so, why the disparaging gap between the bountiful anecdotal evidence and meagre physical? In this talk we discuss the elusive creatures and the surrounding phenomena from a historical, Jungian, mythological, paleo-anthropological, and even modern forensic perspective  as to what may lie behind this cross cultural folklore and unrelenting sightings.SHOW NOTESThe Mythopoetics of Extra-sapiens Hominids: Youtube VideoBYRON JOEL'S WORK IN REGENERATIVE AGRICULTUREwww.oaktreedesigns.com.auBYRON'S MUSIC ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
