In February 2025, the world hit a new low for global sea ice extent. Arctic sea ice has been declining for several decades, but Antarctic sea ice had been holding steady, until recently. Now with four years straight of low summer sea ice extents, it appears that Earth's warming has kicked Antarctic sea ice into a new regime. The salty, white blanket-cover of sea ice is key for regulating Earth's climate. NIWA's Dr Natalie Robinson explains what will happen if there is less of it.
What's it like to live and work on the frozen ocean? A team of researchers is camping out on the sea ice to investigate the small critters that live on the bottom of the ice, and among the sloshy platelet ice layer just below it. From microalgae to krill, these tiny organisms hold up the big complex food web of Antarctica. Scientists are keen to understand these communities, and how they might shift as the sea ice cycle changes. In this week's instalment of Voice of the Sea Ice, Claire Concannon visits Dr Natalie Robinson's sea ice camp out on McMurdo Sound – the patch of ocean near Scott Base. A team of nine from different New Zealand universities and research institutes are here to study the life found within the sea ice. The researchers work hard when the weather is good, and this morning the team are out collecting samples while Dr Robinson juggles interviewing with Claire, and a spot of baking…

Welcome to episode 21 of Next of Kin Parents Podcast! I'm Emma, a British Expat, and Mum of 1, living in Dubai, UAE, and this podcast follows along my own journey raising my daughter and starting my first business.I am so pleased to be joined on this episode by Natalie Robinson, who has a number of photography-based businesses here in Dubai, including Wild Child which is where I met Natalie when she photographed my very first shoot for Next of Kin baby clothes!I asked Natalie to be on the show because she has an interesting background growing up between America, Belgium, Singapore and the UK so I wanted to find out how that influenced her as a parent to 3 children that she chose to raise in UAE. With a 10, 13 and 15 year old, she also gives me an insight into raising teenagers here and some good tips! As well as this, I was keen to understand her experience as a business owner, how she found her passion, and her reflections on 12 years in business.Natalie's Links:For family, pregnancy, newborn shoots: www.natalierobinson.me and www.instagram.com/natalierobinson_lifeincolourFor The Photo Club, photography classes for kids + teens: www.thephotoclub.me and www.instagram.com/thephotoclubuaeFor Wild Child, photography and videography for kids brands: www.instagram.com/wildchild.meFor Your Brand You, lifestyle business portraits for female entrepreneurs: www.instagram.com/yourbrandyouFor Camera Chameleons, creative photography retreats: www.camerachameleons.com and www.instagram.com/camerachameleonsOther Links Mentioned:Gulf Photo Plus: https://gulfphotoplus.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwqP2pBhDMARIsAJQ0Czr8D0nQLF4JLc7hrp6-aH26f7R6Ni4OwJycIxLqw-MnBhcISOs5-sgaAhpTEALw_wcBDubai Mums of Teens: https://www.facebook.com/groups/740892582650344/Use code PODCAST10 for 10% discount on Next of Kin baby clothes https://nextofkin.ae/Support the Show. Please subscribe and share the show to help us grow, and if you are enjoying the podcast and would like to support you can now 'buy me a tea': https://www.buymeacoffee.com/nextofkinpodcastWebsite: https://nextofkin.aeInstagram: @nextofkin.aeTiktok: @nextofkin.aeEmail: podcast@nextofkin.ae
Seven to ten New Zealands. That's the size of the area of sea ice that is missing from Antarctica this year. More than 40 Kiwi scientists - who gathered for an emergency summit in Wellington on Tuesday - called the record low ice levels "deeply alarming". They say it is driven by warming in the Southern Ocean and atmosphere and are calling for urgent cuts to climate emissions. NIWA marine physicist Dr Natalie Robinson spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

Am I a fun person? That was the question listener Natalie Robinson was asking herself. The answer was sobering. Natalie felt fun was being squeezed out of her busy life... but she found inspiration in the two episodes of The Happiness Lab dedicated to Dr Laurie Santos's own quest to regain the fun and playfulness of her youth. So here's another opportunity to listen to the concluding part of that story again. Natalie Robinson used to have fun - taking her kids to the zoo or the waterpark - but recently life started getting in the way of her being playful and goofy. Then she heard two episodes of The Happiness Lab in which Dr Laurie Santos wrestled with exactly the same dilemma. I'd like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People. Listeners have heard me talk about my personal leadership development as I discovered the power of leading with my heart, and my leadership evolution as I found a way to blend leading with my heart and mind. The thing is, as emerging leaders, we're often trying to figure out how we want to lead so that we can get the most out of ourselves and our team, in short, we are striving for maximum team engagement. And so, in this episode, you'll hear from Natalie Robinson Bruner, the founder and principal strategist for Glad ED Leadership Solutions, who will discuss how emerging leaders can get the most out of your team while trying to mold your own leadership style. We'll do this by discussing the leadership development principles that are near and dear to me, which are finding a blend between leading with your heart and mind. We'll offer some of our own employee engagement attempts and their epic failures and their wins. The Female Career. Trailblazing New Zealand women share their career journeys
Dr Natalie Robinson is a marine physicist with NIWA, New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research. Natalie holds a PhD in Marine Physics and specialises in polar oceanography with most of her work looking at Antarctica. Her work looks at broader issues like how does the polar ice vary from year-to-year to the ‘nitty-gritty' of what's happening when a specific ice shelf (a glacier that has grown into the sea) is melting . She is presently focussed on ‘supercooled' ocean water (water that is colder than its own freezing temperature, yet remains liquid, and so is the coldest naturally-occurring water on the planet) and the ice crystals in this unique flow. Her work has significantly contributed to understanding the oceanic connection between ice shelf and sea ice regimes, and has also furthered our understanding of climate change. Natalie is also passionate about making science accessible to everyone and has participated in numerous outreach and engagement opportunities. "The first time I went to Antarctica, I stepped off the plane to breathe in air that was colder than I'd ever breathed before”.
