A week ago, on March 30th, Neptune moved into Aries for the first time in our lives. The planet of dreams, spirituality, Source and the unconscious last journeyed through the sign of the Ram from 1861-1875. A slow-moving planet changing signs is a very big deal! It's like entering a new era, a new chapter - both collectively and in our personal lives. This year we'll get a preview of Neptune in Aries until October 25th, and then Neptune will reverse back into Pisces. Neptune will return to Aries on January 26, 2026 and stay until 2039.As we're in this transitional phase of Neptune's sign change, I thought it would be useful to review the past 14 years of Neptune in Pisces. To that end, I'm sharing a talk I gave in 2011, when Neptune first entered Pisces. The talk was at New Renaissance Bookstore in Portland, Oregon. I re-listened and thought it was actually pretty great (except for the thousands of “um's” throughout the talk - geez, I hope I've improved on that front!). What is going ON on our planet? This question is only going to get bigger and more confusing as Neptune in Pisces reaches 27 degrees starting in May 2023 and begins an ongoing square to the Galactic Center at 27 degrees Sagittarius until January 2025. Neptune in Pisces is unraveling Sagittarian themes, and also dissolving density and attachments that are shifting and leaving. Asteroids are fascinating, but in truth I don't use them much in my own astrological practice. It's not because I don't “believe in them” or anything like that – their effects are quite demonstrably real. The reason is simply that the “big” planets keep me busy enough. In all professional astrological work, there is always a balance that needs to be struck between the number of points an astrologer will have time to discuss in a counseling session versus having mercy on the client's attention span and energy. It simply takes me so long to do justice to the message of the major planets that I've rarely had time to add asteroids to the menu. Then there's the minor problem of there being about a million of them! Last I heard, something like 14,000 of them even had names. To avoid being overwhelmed, many astrologers who use asteroids limit themselves to what are often (erroneously) called “the big four.” They're not actually the biggest, they're just the first four to be discovered – Vesta, Ceres, Juno, and Pallas. Hygiea is actually more massive than Juno by far and, if size matters, it should be in that quartet instead. Juno just happened to be the third one to be discovered, but it only squeaks into the Top Twenty as “heavyweights” go.   The more massive an asteroid is, the more powerful it is astrologically? That tempting notion makes a degree of intuitive sense, but I doubt it's true. That's because astrological experience teaches us otherwise. Pluto's mass, for example, is relatively tiny – only about one 400th the mass of Earth – and vastly less than Jupiter or Saturn. Yet woe betide the astrologer who ignores Pluto!

From the middle of October through nearly the end of November (and one more time in March 2023), Mars in Gemini will be squaring Neptune RX in Pisces and creating an additional slow down for Mars to move through, especially during his retrograde phase from October 30 until January 13. Mars is receiving blasts of energy that take him out of his normal operating procedures and reliance on the mind, body, and personal needs. This ongoing square is dissolving those tendencies to say, do, move, or express with clarity, as Mars is being required to be more receptive to his intuition, feelings, heart messages, and a higher perspective beyond the present moment. Communication issues are more likely, including misunderstandings, missed messages, and not hearing or knowing all the information.
