Scott is the president of Haselkorn Inc. 1:25 Scott starts off his backstory by revealing that he had a learning disability when he was younger and shared about the first book he read that he thinks made a significant impact on him starting early in MSP. He also talks about how he started wanting to own a computer store as his first dream. 4:00 Scott describes how, at the age of 12, he ventured to buy computer processors by calling Intel in California and acquiring a credit card, tax ID, and applications aided by his parents. He also states that he started out fixing his parent's computers, friends' parents' computers, and even teachers' computers throughout high school. 6:58 He shares that he got his first job in a local place as a tech support and eventually moved to the commercial support department, transferred to Network Administration, and was laid off twice from the same company. 9:30 Scott speaks about he did a training class in dental offices on how to use dental software and got his first paying client through his dad. He then that time started to think about MSP and sort out what his goals were. 11:43 He shares his first encounter with IT Nation and how surprised he was to see many people who like computers the same as he does and make businesses out of them. He also shared the time he started his journey with ConnectWise and how it changed his life. 15:00 Scott then talks about his objectives and says he focuses on security-focused practice to make sure his clients can prevent or don't experience rainy days. He also points out that we should always keep evolving as threats keep changing every day. 17:44 Brian dives right into the conversation, agreeing with what Scott said and noting that one cool thing about the industry is it is ever-changing. He shares his thoughts that these days it is more on “keeping up with the bad guys” and focused on the security-first model. 20:50 Tim and Brian express their astonishment at how Scott was predestined to be working in MSP since he read that book in 4thgrade. Tim adds that it was the game-changer for Scott. 24:13 Scott closes the podcast by saying that all the MSPs all over the globe are peers and teammates. He hopes that as teammates, we can make the world a safer place for the good guys.

I attended Arabia Mountain High school where I was blessed to receive the opportunity of not only obtaining my High School diploma but also an Associates degree in Network Administration. Obtaining a specialized skill and degree at an early age helped me learn the importance of education. I continued my studies at the world renowned historically black college Texas Southern University where I majored in Political Science with a dual minor in Spanish and computer science. There I would learn about the building blocks of government and what it means to come together as a society to promote the greater good. Politics has always been a passion of mine as well as helping the community to be the best they can be. Words can not express how happy I am to potentially be in a situation where I can impact and help others that I would not have been able to reach before. If I were so fortunate to be elected as a Stonecrest City councilmen I swear to uphold the laws of our city charter and constitution. I want to promote new business moving inside the city to generate more revenue and stimulate growth inside our economy. I will support our local schools and hope to generate new youth programs to enrich our residences' lives.  I will work to ensure that our local government has positive effects on our quality of life and is transparent with the citizens of stonecrest. With your help I hope to make Stonecrest the greatest city in America! Sincerely, Ryan GallagherCONTACT:https://instagram.com/gallagher4stonecrest?utm_medium=copy_linkSubscribe to the Stonecrest Weekly Newsletter so you don't miss a thing!https://instagram.us10.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=32dcbcb351d2cf1f1e904fd20&id=ec295d5610Support the show

Many enterprises run IT systems that are necessarily complex. So complex, sometimes, that the number and variety of services, applications and connections comes as a shock, even to the IT Department.Finding the cause of an outage or slow-down, therefore, can be frustrating and time-consuming. Additionally, it can lead to all sorts of internal "politicking" (to put it nicely). But even once there's a coherent "map", correlating what the business wants with what the IT stack can provide is another headache, and one that's not easily achieved. Unless, of course, you happen to use AppDynamics. In this talk with Jim Cavanaugh from the company, we look at how organizations are joining up business aims and objectives with the technical nitty-gritty of networks, clouds, connections and all the whirring boxes in data centers. This podcast is produced in conjunction with AppDynamics, a Cisco company.

Episode Summary In this episode of the Adventures in DevOps podcast, the panelists talk about getting started with DevOps and learning its principles and technologies. Lee and Scott mention that they share a similar journey, initially starting as system administrators and working their way into DevOps. Nell says that she was a Ruby and .NET developer before learning cloud technologies such as Heroku, Chef, and Docker. To someone with a programming background wanting to get into DevOps, Lee highly recommends three books - The Practice of System and Network Administration, The Practice of Cloud System Administration: DevOps and SRE Practices for Web Services - Volume 2, and Time Management for System Administrators. He mentions that they are technology-agnostic and help in understanding what is really going on in the system. Scott stresses on the importance of understanding basic networking, linux systems and commands, bash scripting and knowing the core fundamentals and interactions of the underlying systems. He suggests going for online resources, tutorials and boot camps which are plenty nowadays and easily accessible as well. Nell advises listeners to pick a cloud provider such as Digital Ocean and learn the basics by working with it, which can later be applied to any other cloud provider. She also recommends learning programming languages to get a good software development foundation. The panelists talk about working on specific projects and getting hands dirty rather than traditional learning, to enhance their DevOps skills. Nell explains how they implement the 'learning by doing' concept at work. She mentions that understanding how virtual machines and physical servers work is crucial before moving on to learning about containers. Lee suggests Vagrant - a tool for building and managing virtual machine environments, as a good resource for the same. They caution that while it is important to learn things during our time off, self-care and setting healthy boundaries is paramount. It is ok to take longer to learn something given that DevOps as a whole can be extremely complex, and working in a non-pressure environment can be very beneficial. They recommend Ops School for beginners which is a comprehensive program aimed at people who want to get into operations engineering. They then share their insights on monitoring and how to get started with it. Lee recommends the book Practical Monitoring, and Sensu - a monitoring event pipeline, as good starting points. DevOps can be considered as a technical as well as a cultural movement. To that effect, they discuss where should people start learning the associated cultural elements. Nell recommends reading the books - Effective DevOps, and The Phoenix Project and Crucial Conversations. Lee advocates going old school with the writings of Richard Stallman, and books of the 80s and 90s such as The Art of C Programming. They mention that conversational skills and dealing with people are critical skills in today's work environments. Scott recommends Google's Site Reliability Engineering books which have a lot of great stuff to build a solid foundation and are also free to read online. Finally, they talk about how to keep learning and expanding knowledge. Some effective suggestions discussed include extensive practicing, working professionally, solving business problems, building expertise in programming, and attending DevOps Days events and Linux Users groups. Fortunately for her, the DJ career became successful enough to leave her career in IT and pursue the dream of working full-time as a DJ/Producer, and DJ Neekola was born. DJ Neekola is not only one of Washington, DC’s favorite DJ’s, but has also been requested frequently overseas in Switzerland, Greece, France, Italy, and Spain. In collaboration with J Punch she owned a record label in 2011 called NomNom Records, bringing on producers such as Dr. Kucho to produce original tracks and remixes, in addition to other talented local producers in the metro Washington, DC area. Neekola also produced an album in collaboration with Rex Riot called “Playtime,” which sold out in the first month of production. Although DJ Neekola’s success paved a path for international fame, Nicole directed her energy to solve key industry problems through technology and created Pelonkey. This week, we have Nigel Williams here to bring us all sorts of info about Multipath TCP, what it is, how it works and the ongoing effort to bring it into FreeBSD. All that and of course the latest BSD news coming your way, right now! This episode was brought to you by Headlines Backing out changes doesn.t always pinpoint the problem (https://blog.crashed.org/dont-backout/) Peter Wemm brings us a fascinating look at debugging an issue which occurred on the FreeBSD build cluster recently. Bottom line? Backing out something isn.t necessarily the fix, rather it should be apart of the diagnostic process In this particular case, a change to some mmap() functionality ended up exposing a bug in the kernel.s page fault handler which existed since (wait for it.) 1997! As Peter mentions at the bottom of the Article, this bug had been showing up for years, but was sporadic and often written off as a networking hiccup. *** BSD Router Project benchmarks new routing changes to FreeBSD (https://github.com/ocochard/netbenchs/blob/master/Xeon_E5-2650-8Cores-Chelsio_T540-CR/nXxq10g/results/fbsd11-melifaro.r287531/README.md) A project branch of FreeBSD -CURRENT has been created with a number of optimizations to the routing code Alexander V. Chernikov (melifaro@).s routing branch (https://svnweb.freebsd.org/base/projects/routing/?view=log) The net result is an almost doubling of peak performance in packets per second Performance scales well with the number of NIC queues (2 queues is 88% faster than 1 queue, 3 is 270% faster). Unlike the previous code, when the number of queues hits 4, performance is down by only 10%, instead of being cut nearly in half Other Benchmark Results, and the tools to do your own tests (https://github.com/ocochard/netbenchs) *** When is SSL not SSL? (http://www.tedunangst.com/flak/post/the-peculiar-libretunnel-situation) Our buddy Ted has a good write-up on a weird situation related to licensing of stunnel and LibreSSL The problem exists due to stunnel being released with a different license, that is technically incompatible with the GPL, as well as linking against non-OpenSSL versions. The author has also decided to create specific named exceptions when the *SSL lib is part of the base operating system, but does not personally consider LibreSSL as a valid linking target on its own Ted points out that the LibreSSL team considers LibreSSL == OpenSSL, so this may be a moot concern *** Update on systembsd (http://darknedgy.net/files/systembsd.pdf) We.ve mentioned the GSoC project to create a SystemD shim in OpenBSD before. Now we have the slides from Ian Sutton talking about this project. As a refresher, this project is to take DBUS and create daemons emulating various systemd components, such as hostnamed, localed, timedated, and friends. Written from scratch in C, it was mainly created in the hopes of becoming a port, allowing Gnome and related tools to function on OpenBSD. This is a good read, especially for current or aspiring porters who want to bring over newer versions of applications which now depend upon SystemD. *** Interview - Nigel Williams - njwilliams@swin.edu.au (njwilliams@swin.edu.au) Multipath TCP News Roundup OpenBSD UEFI boot loader (http://marc.info/?l=openbsd-cvs&m=144115942223734&w=2) We.ve mentioned the ongoing work to bring UEFI booting to OpenBSD and it looks like this has now landed in the tree The .fdisk. utility has also been updated with a new -b flag, when used with .-i. will create the special EFI system partition on amd64/i386 . (http://marc.info/?l=openbsd-cvs&m=144139348416071&w=2) Some twitter benchmarks (https://twitter.com/mherrb/status/641004331035193344) *** FreeBSD Journal, July/August issue (https://www.freebsdfoundation.org/journal/vol2_no4/) The latest issue of the FreeBSD Journal has arrived As always, the Journal opens with a letter from the FreeBSD Foundation Feature Articles: Groupon's Deal on FreeBSD -- How to drive adoption of FreeBSD at your organization, and lessons learned in retraining Linux sysadmins FreeBSD: The Isilon Experience -- Mistakes not to make when basing a product on FreeBSD. TL;DR: track head Reflections on FreeBSD.org: Packages -- A status update on where we are with binary packages, what issues have been overcome, and which still remain Inside the Foundation -- An overview of some of the things you might not be aware that the FreeBSD Foundation is doing to support the project and attract the next generation of committers Includes a book review of .The Practise of System and Network Administration. As usual, various other reports are included: The Ports Report, SVN Update, A conference report, a report from the Essen hackathon, and the Event Calendar *** Building ARMv6 packages on FreeBSD, the easy way (http://blogs.freebsdish.org/brd/2015/08/25/building-arm-packages-with-poudriere-the-simple-way/) Previously we have discussed how to build ARMv6 packages on FreeBSD We also interviewed Sean Bruno about his work in this area Thankfully, over time this process has been simplified, and no longer requires a lot of manual configuration, or fussing with the .image activator. Now, you can just build packages for your Raspberry Pi or similar device, just as simply as you would build for x86, it just takes longer to build. *** New PC-BSD Release Schedule (http://blog.pcbsd.org/2015/09/new-release-schedule-for-pc-bsd/) The PC-BSD Team has announce an updated release schedule for beyond 10.2 This schedule follows more closely the FreeBSD schedules, with major releases only occurring when FreeBSD does the next point update, or major version bump. PC-BSD.s source tree has been split into master(current) and stable as well PRODUCTION / EDGE packages will be built from stable, with PRODUCTION updated monthly now. The -CURRENT monthly images will contain the master source builds. *** Feedback/Questions Joris writes in (http://slexy.org/view/s21cguSv7E) Anonymous (http://slexy.org/view/s217A5NNGg) Darin (http://slexy.org/view/s20HyiqJV0) ***
