December 8, 1914. Crowds pour into the New Amsterdam Theater to see the opening night of a new show, “Watch Your Step.” It's the first full-length revue written by the popular young songwriter, Irving Berlin. His songs show off Berlin's signature wit and simplicity, but also his musical sophistication. As his fellow composer, Jerome Kern, would later put it: "Berlin has no place in American music—he is American music.” Who was Irving Berlin? And how did he utterly transform American songwriting? Thanks to our guests: James Kaplan, author of Irving Berlin: New York Genius; Laurence Maslon, arts professor at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and host of the radio show "Broadway to Main Street" on WLIW; and Katherine Barrett Swett, English teacher, poet, and granddaughter of Irving Berlin and Ellin Mackay. Real Conversations with Jacob Young

This week, Jacob sits down with fellow actor Adam Jacobs. Adam's big break came with the opportunity to play “Marius” in the national tour of Les Miserables.  This job led to him being cast in the Broadway revival and his subsequent Broadway debut.  Within the short 14 months that the show played the Broadhurst Theater, he had the benefit of working with many Broadway veterans including Lea Salonga, Judy Kuhn, Gary Beach, Daphne-Rubin Vega, Norm Lewis, Ann Harada, Aaron Lazar (seen in photo), among many others. Since Les Miserables, he has journeyed from the islands of Mamma Mia! to the African pridelands of The Lion King.  He's gone from the tropics of Once On This Island to the Arabian deserts of Aladdin. His mixed ethnicity has allowed him to play varied roles, and he thanks his parents for their whole-hearted encouragement to pursue a life in the arts. Adam, his wife Kelly, and their sons Jack and Alex now make their home in Chicago. After touring for two years with the first national tour of Disney's Mary Poppins as a dance captain and swing, Kelly happily joined the Broadway company and stayed with it until its closing in 2013. Adam's younger sister, Arielle Jacobs, is also a well-known actress who has had success in theater. After playing “Gabriella” in the national tour of Disney's High School Musical, she starred as “Nina” in the Broadway production and first national tour of In The Heights, played “Nessarose” in the Broadway company of Wicked, and is currently playing “Jasmine” in Aladdin at the New Amsterdam Theater. Mans caused a stir when a video of her performing her poem “Footnotes for Kanye” went viral on YouTube. Since then, she has continued to build a following through her live performances at venues like the Kennedy Center and Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theater and on stages across the country, Her new book "Black Girl, Call Home" is inspired and informed by her own life and offers an important perspective on the world we live in. Poems from the collection have been featured by Elle and O, The Oprah Magazine, part of the national dialogue about issues and events that deeply affect people of color.
